Cable Sitcoms Hot in Cleveland and Melissa & Joey Ratings; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of August 30, 2010)

Original sitcoms this summer have done well on cable. Sitcoms like Are We There Yet for TBS, Hot in Cleveland for TV Land and now Melissa & Joey for ABC Family. TV Land's Hot in Cleveland had its season finale last Wednesday (Aug. 18) and it did a solid 3.4 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating. That was its best total viewers since the series premiere which did 4.75 million. In live+3 day DVR ratings, the season finale averaged over 4 million viewers and a rating of 2.1 in Adults 25-54 and 2.8 in Women 25-54 which is more than a 20% increase over the previous week's episode. The sitcom will begin production on 20 episodes in October with it returning to the air in January 2011 with new original sitcom Retired at 35.
Meanwhile, ABC Family launched new sitcom Melissa & Joey last Tuesday (Aug. 17) to its best original series premiere ratings among 18-49 ever! The premiere episode did 2.15 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating. The second episode immediately followed and built on the premiere in viewers with 2.18 million and held much of the 18-49 rating with a 0.9 rating. Week two had episode three air this past Tuesday (Aug. 24) and the series had great retention doing 1.92 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating. ABC Family is smartly airing encores after the morning Sabrina, the Teenage Witch airings and afternoon Sabrina airings once a week each, which also starred Melissa Joan Hart. I think cable series benefit from repeats/encores during the week, that is why some grow during the original airings.

It's Friday, so it is time for "Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows" for the coming week. This is where we list what sitcom stars are appearing on talk shows for the coming week, the stars are both current and past sitcom stars (but we won't cover movie stars like Tom Hanks or John Travolta, since they won't be talking about their past sitcoms likely), so this is for all sitcom fans of all eras!
