SitcomsOnline Digest: Amazon Cancels Previously Announced New Seasons of Two Series; New Season Premiere Date for The Masked Singer
Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! It's not a huge news week, but we're hearing about some of the first real consequences of the ongoing strikes, a new reality series that will somehow (it's not really clear how) feature two former reality stars who are in prison, and more. Let's get going!

- We are beginning to see some permanent effects of the ongoing entertainment strikes, as Amazon has announced the cancellation of two series that had previously been given renewals. (Deadline)
- The Masked Singer, which may be (for now) the most we'll get to see in new episodes, now has an earlier season 10 premiere date than planned. (Deadline)
- The ratings for the season six premiere of The Chi demonstrated that the show is still going strong after six seasons. (Deadline)
- Because networks will grasp for any straw to keep a reality franchise going, it seems the Chrisley family is set to return with a series that will somehow involve Todd and Julie Chrisley, despite the fact that they are in prison and no prison would ever allow inmates to participate in a reality show. - Paramount has decided to not sell BET (which also includes VH-1) after all. (AP News)

Chucky Season 3 Starts October 4; Hulu's Shoresy Returns October 27
Washington, D.C. is gonna get Chucked up! The half-hour comedy/horror series Chucky Season 3 begins its term on SYFY and USA Network on Wednesday, October 4 at 9pm, next day on Peacock. Ready for a Sudbury Saturday Night? Season 2 of Shoresy will premiere exclusively on Hulu Friday, October 27! Season 1 is available to stream on Hulu. Created by and starring Jared Keeso, directed by Jacob Tierney and produced by New Metric Media in association with Play Fun Games, the half hour comedy sees the foul-mouthed, chirp-serving, mother-loving, fan favourite character, Shoresy (Keeso), and the Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs of the Northern Ontario Senior Hockey Organization (The NOSHO), continue their quest to never lose again. Hulu Releases Details for The Other Black Girl; American Horror Story Spin-off New Season This Fall
Hulu has debuted the trailer and key art for the upcoming original series The Other Black Girl, from Onyx Collective, based on Zakiya Dalila Harris' best selling novel. The series will premiere all 10 episodes on September 13, only on Hulu. Nella, an editorial assistant, is tired of being the only Black girl at her company, so she's excited when Hazel is hired. But as Hazel’s star begins to rise, Nella spirals out and discovers something sinister is going on at the company.
CAST: Sinclair Daniel, Ashleigh Murray, Brittany Adebumola, Hunter Parrish, Bellamy Young, Eric McCormack, and Garcelle Beauvais. Based on Zakiya Dalila Harris' best-selling novel, The Other Black Girl is executive produced by Rashida Jones, Adam Fishbach, Zakiya Dalila Harris, Jordan Reddout, Gus Hickey, Tara Duncan, and Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey. Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey also serve as co-showrunners. The Other Black Girl is a Hulu original from Onyx Collective.
American Horror Stories premieres Thursday, October 26 exclusively on Hulu. American Horror Stories is a spin-off of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's award-winning hit anthology series American Horror Story. American Horror Stories is an anthology series that will feature a different horror story each episode. Since 2011, the creators of AHS have redefined the horror genre with various installments featuring a creepy asylum, a coven of witches, a traveling freak show, a haunted hotel and the apocalypse itself. The television series sprouted a legion of dedicated fans who anticipate what terrors the next chapter will hold. The series is executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Alexis Martin Woodall, Max Winkler, Manny Coto and Jon Robin Baitz. The franchise is produced by 20th Television.

Starz Comedy Shining Vale Returns in October; Celebrity Name That Tune Celebrities for Season 3
STARZ announced that the horror comedy series Shining Vale, starring Emmy Award® nominee Courteney Cox (Friends, Cougar Town), Academy Award® nominee and Emmy Award® winner Greg Kinnear (As Good as It Gets, The Kennedys) and Academy Award® winner Mira Sorvino (Hollywood, The Expecting), will return for season two on Friday, October 13, 2023. New first-look photos tease the return to Shining Vale where Pat (Cox) and Terry (Kinnear) Phelps struggle with reconnecting their broken family, mental illness, menopause, and trauma, as their Connecticut home continues to reveal more of its haunted past. The Masked Singer Gets Kickoff Episode for Season 10; 48 Hours Heading to Broadcast Syndication
The Masked Singer is celebrating its milestone tenth season and will now have a special kickoff premiere episode immediately following the NFL Double Header on Sunday, Sept. 10 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/5:00-6:00 PM PT live to all time zones) on Fox. The premiere will deliver a special celebrity performance and reveal - one of the biggest, can't-miss unmaskings in the show's history! The episode will also feature the return of The Masked Singer celebrity alumni from previous seasons. The alumni (Michelle Williams and Rumer Willis, Joey Fatone and Bow Wow, Victor Oladipo and Barry Zito) pair up for all-new duet performances - unmasked!
Then, the season ten competition will officially begin in the time period premiere airing Wednesday, Sept. 27 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). The legacy continues with an all-new format with three incredible groups and special Battle Royale semi-final episodes. 6P | 5C: The Andy Griffith Show: "The Education of Ernest T. Bass" — Ernest T. is back in Mayberry to get his diploma. He is so determined that Andy convinces Helen to allow him to attend class, but Ernest T. isn't exactly classroom material.
Voice actor, comedian, writer and producer Johnny Hardwick, who was best known as the voice of Dale Gribble on King of the Hill, has died. He was found dead at his home Austin, Texas, on August 8. Mr. Hardwick was 64.
Hardwick provided the voice of Dale Gribble on the Fox animated sitcom King of the Hill. The 1997-2010 series centers on the Hills, an American family in the fictional city of Arlen, Texas, as well as their neighbors, co-workers, relatives, classmates, friends, and acquaintances. Dale Gribble is the Hills' chain-smoking, balding, conspiracy-theorist next-door neighbor and Hank's (Mike Judge) best friend. As a result of his paranoia, Dale does not trust the government or "the system". He owns his own pest control business, Dale's Dead Bug, and is also a licensed bounty hunter and President of the Arlen Gun Club. Dale is married to Nancy Hicks-Gribble (Ashley Gardner), a weather reporter and later an anchorwoman for the Channel 84 news. The cast also included Kathy Najimy, Pamela Adlon, Brittany Murphy (1997-2009), Stephen Root, Toby Huss, Jonathan Joss, Lauren Tom, Breckin Meyer, and Tom Petty.
At the time of his death, he was set to reprise the role again in the upcoming revival. It was later revealed that he had recorded "a couple" of new episodes for the revival prior to his death.
He was also its staff writer, story editor and producer from 1997 to 2002. He had three Prime Time Emmy Award nominations, and in 1999 he won an Emmy for producing King of the Hill.
Mr. Hardwick did a great job performing the memorable role of Dale Gribble. We thank him for his work on King of the Hill. He will be greatly missed.
Fashion model and actress Shelley Smith, who starred as Sara James on The Associates, has died. She suffered a cardiac arrest on August 5. She died at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital in Los Angeles, California, on August 8. Ms. Smith was 70.
Smith starred as Sara James on the 1979-1980 ABC sitcom The Associates. The series, which was based on the novel of the same name by John Jay Osborn Jr., was the first bonafide starring vehicle for Martin Short and centered on a small group of young novice lawyers who worked at a Wall Street law firm. It was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and two Primetime Emmy Awards. The cast included Wilfrid Hyde-White, Joe Regalbuto, Alley Mills, and Tim Thomerson.
Some of her sitcom guest appearances included The Stockard Channing Show, Angie, The Love Boat (2 episodes), Diff'rent Strokes, and Webster.
She starred as Capt. Carolyn Engel on the 1983-1984 NBC military drama For Love and Honor. Some of her other television guest appearances included Tenspeed and Brown Shoe, The Phoenix, Hart to Hart (2 episodes), Fantasy Island, Hotel, Lady Blue, The New Mike Hammer, Hunter, Magnum, P.I. (2 episodes), Simon & Simon (4 episodes), Dragnet (1989), and Murder, She Wrote (2 episodes).
Ms. Smith was a talented and lovely actress. The Associates had a great cast and was critically acclaimed, but it never found a big audience airing against One Day at a Time. It's too bad ABC didn't give it more of a chance in another time slot. We thank her for work on television. She will be deeply missed.
We also remember actor Nicolas Coster. He had a recurring role as David Warner, the father of Blair Warner, on The Facts of Life. He died on June 26 at a hospital in Florida. Mr. Coster was 89.
Coster had a recurring role as David Warner, Blair Warner's (Lisa Whelchel) father, in five episodes of The Facts of Life from 1982 to 1988. His ex-wife, Monica Warner, was played by Marj Dusay in eight episodes from 1981 to 1987.
Some of his other sitcom guest appearances included No Time for Sergeants, Wendy and Me, Occasional Wife, On Our Own (1978), Husbands, Wives & Lovers (1978), Grandpa Goes to Washington, One Day at a Time, When the Whistle Blows, Police Squad!, Teachers Only (2 episodes), 9 to 5 (3 episodes), Hooperman, Who's the Boss?, Nurses, Coach, 3rd Rock from the Sun (2 episodes), and Crumbs.
Coster starred as Robert Delaney on Another World from 1970 to 1980. He played Anthony Makana in five episodes of One Life to Live. He starred as Lionel Lockridge on Santa Barbara from 1984 to 1993. The role earned him four Daytime Emmy nominations. He starred as Mayor Jack Madison on the digital soap The Bay from 2010 to 2019. The role won him his first Daytime Emmy in 2017. He also worked as a producer from 2010 to 2014.
He played John Eldridge in the 1965 CBS primetime serialized drama Our Private World. He starred as Chief J.E. Carson on The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo (also known as Lobo). In 1983, he starred as Dr. Morris Whitford on the short-lived ABC medical drama Ryan's Four.
Some of his other television guest appearances included The Defenders, The Green Hornet, Charlie's Angels, Little House on the Prairie, Baretta, Family, The Rockford Files, Wonder Woman, The Incredible Hulk, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Dallas (3 episodes), Hart to Hart, Quincy, M.E. (1982), Simon & Simon (3 episodes), Magnum, P.I. (1983), Hardcastle and McCormick, T.J. Hooker, Knight Rider (1983), L.A. Law, thirtysomething (1989), Murder, She Wrote (1989), Life Goes On, Star Trek: The Next Generation, MacGyver, Matlock, Law & Order (2 episodes), and Cold Case.
Mr. Coster was a fine character actor. He was a familiar face on many television shows during his long career. We thank him for the laughs and entertainment that he brought us on television. He will be sorely missed.

FETV Acquires Quincy, M.E.; Apple TV+ Announces Still Up Date
FETV (Family Entertainment Television), home to beloved and timeless television series and movies carried across cable, satellite, and virtual platforms, announced that Quincy, M.E. will join the network's programming lineup beginning Monday, August 28. The show will debut in its regular time slot every night at 7pm ET, leading into Perry Mason at 8pm ET. Quincy, M.E. stars Jack Klugman as Dr. Quincy, a brilliant and passionate medical examiner within the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office. Quincy, M.E. was the first drama series to regularly feature detailed forensic investigations. The television series ran on NBC for eight seasons from 1976 to 1983.
FETV's current lineup features popular television series such as Emergency!, Leave It to Beaver, Perry Mason, and Adam-12. According to Nielsen, FETV's total audience in primetime (7pm-12am ET) ranks among the top 40 ad-supported cable networks, driven by the success of Emergency!, Perry Mason, and Adam-12. Apple TV+ unveiled a first-look at its upcoming comedy Still Up, and shared that the new eight-episode series will premiere globally on Friday, September 22. Starring Antonia Thomas (The Good Doctor, Small Axe, Lovesick) and Craig Roberts (Red Oaks, Submarine), Still Up will debut with the first three episodes, followed weekly by one episode every Friday through October 27. Still Up is an almost romantic comedy set in the after-hours world of insomniacs Danny (Roberts) and Lisa (Thomas) who have no secrets except their feelings for each other. Also starring in the ensemble cast are Blake Harrison, Lois Chimimba, Luke Fetherston and Rich Fulcher.
Still Up is co-created & written by Steve Burge (Seekers) and Natalie Walter. Bryce Hart (Ten Percent) also writes on the series. It is directed by BAFTA Award nominee John Addis (Lucky Break). Antenna TV's Three-Day Weekend Marathon of Three's Company; HBO Orders The Franchise to Series
This Labor Day weekend, Antenna TV comes knocking on your door with three days of Three's Company. Spend a groovy long weekend with your three favorite roomies and trip into fall with the sitcom's most hilarious episodes. Antenna TV's "Three's Company Three-Day Weekend Marathon" starts Saturday, September 2 at 10am Eastern and ends Monday, September 4 at 10pm Eastern. Three's Company starred John Ritter, Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Summers as Jack, Janet, and Chrissy who were three single roommates living together in a California apartment. Archer Final Season Trailer; Great American Family Fastest-Growing Network

Killing It Gets Play on YouTube, TikTok and USA Network; Stand Up to Cancer Special Returns
Peacock's critically acclaimed comedy series Killing It, starring Craig Robinson, drops the first three episodes of Season 1 on YouTube and Episode 1 on TikTok, available to stream now. Additionally, the first two episodes from Season 1 will air tonight, Aug. 7 at 8 pm PT / 11 pm ET, on USA Network following WWE Monday Night Raw, and viewers can watch the first episode of Killing It Season 1 and other select Peacock Original episodes for free on Peacocktv.com without a subscription.
Season 2 of Killing It premieres on Thursday, Aug. 17 (all episodes). Killing It is a comedy about class, capitalism and one man's quest to achieve the American dream. Killing It comes from executive producers Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), and stars Craig Robinson, Claudia O'Doherty and Rell Battle. The series is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group. In the first season, Craig Foster (Craig Robinson) teams up with his Uber driver, Jillian (Claudia O'Doherty), to enter a state-sponsored snake-hunting contest in hopes of achieving the American dream and becoming a successful entrepreneur.
The second season (premiering Aug. 17) picks up a year later, as Craig (Craig Robinson) and Jillian (Claudia O'Doherty) take the money they won from the Florida Python Challenge and use it to buy a saw palmetto berry farm. Craig is so close to realizing his dream of shrinking men's prostates, making his family proud, and - most importantly - getting filthy rich. Just as they're about to start making money, however, a series of unexpected visitors (some human, some not) threaten to destroy everything they've built.
On Saturday, August 19, the entertainment community will come together for Stand Up to Cancer(R) (SU2C) and its eighth roadblock fundraising special, supporting urgently needed research and new treatments for cancer. Debuting in a refreshing new format, the televised celebration entitled "How It Started, How It's Going" will recognize SU2C's impact and progress over the last 15 years.
This year's show will air on Saturday, August 19 at 8 p.m. ET and PT / 7 p.m. CT. Over the course of one hour, the show will celebrate 15 years of cutting-edge cancer research and highlight special moments with stars from film, television, sports and journalism who have supported the SU2C movement. The show will also feature renowned SU2C-funded cancer scientists, who will discuss the progress being made in the fight against cancer and the critical need to continue to fund life-saving research. There will also be touching stories from cancer survivors who have received breakthrough treatments supported by SU2C.
Celebrities making a special appearance during the show include Elizabeth Banks, Jessica Biel, Don Cheadle, Katie Couric, Danai Gurira, Tony Hale, Ken Jeong, Maria Menounos, Julianne Moore, Tig Notaro, Jimmy Smits, Eric Stonestreet and Justin Timberlake; a special montage of comedic skits from past shows will feature Jack Black, Ben Falcone, Zach Galifianakis, Brad Garrett, Bill Hader, Jon Hamm, Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Melissa McCarthy, and Matthew McConaughey. The televised special will also feature past musical performances from the likes of Brittany Howard, Simone Ledward Boseman, and The Who. Prime Video Orders Season 3 of Hit Series; I Am Groot Returns to Disney+
Prime Video announced that it has greenlit a 10-episode third season of the global hit series, The Summer I Turned Pretty. Based on the best-selling book trilogy from Jenny Han, the Prime Video drama has been a breakout success, performing particularly well with young women viewers. Season Two of The Summer I Turned Pretty is one of the 10 most watched seasons of any series ever on the service. The second season premiered July 14 and more than doubled Season One's viewership within three days of launch. Season Three of the Amazon Original series will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories around the world.
Season Three was officially greenlit ahead of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Production on Season Three will not begin until after labor negotiations with those unions have been resolved. Season Three of The Summer I Turned Pretty is led by showrunners Jenny Han and Sarah Kucserka. Han, Kucserka, and Karen Rosenfelt serve as executive producers, along with Hope Hartman, Mads Hansen, and Paul Lee for wiip. The series is a co-production of Amazon Studios and wiip. The Summer I Turned Pretty is a multigenerational drama that hinges on a love triangle between one girl and two brothers, the ever-evolving relationship between mothers and their children, and the enduring power of strong female friendship. It is a coming-of-age story about first love, first heartbreak, and the magic of that one perfect summer. The second season of The Summer I Turned Pretty is now streaming on Prime Video, with new episodes weekly until the season finale on Friday, August 18, 2023.
