Digital Digest: Mannix - The Sixth Season DVD Review
It just wouldn't be Saturday if there wasn't a Digital Digest, and this week is no exception... so welcome to Digital Digest! This week, we've got all of our regular weekly features, of course, and we have a review of CBS Home Entertainment's upcoming release of Mannix - The Sixth Season. Let's get going!
We all know that Mill Creek licensed several Carsey-Werner series not too long ago, and that they have started releasing many of these series. Among those series, we heard of That '70s Show - Season One (Blu-ray) debuting on Blu-ray, but there had been some delays along the way. Now, it seems that Mill Creek is ready to get this set rolling, with a scheduled release date of March 20 for the set. The four-disc set (yes, that is one more disc than the DVD release from Mill Creek contained, which is unusual given that Blu-ray Disc sets typically contain less discs) will contain the entire first season, along with the original special features, a new green screen feature, and even some episodes from the second season, in high-definition format. As a side note, this marks the very first time that a sitcom from the '90s will appear on Blu-ray. In fact, unless we are forgetting a series (speaking strictly of sitcoms; The Twilight Zone obviously is not a sitcom), this will also be the oldest sitcom to make it to the format so far.
This week, TVShowsOnDVD.com brought some new information to light about a DVD set that has been "in the works" for almost a year now that finally appears to be coming to light. Bob's Burgers - Season One is finally making it in to the "ready to be announced" phase of DVD production, rather than just being mentioned as a "Coming Soon" released in several Fox DVD releases. In other words, the studio finally officially announced it, and set a release date of April 17. UPCOMING WEEK PREVIEW
Tuesday (January 24) is a good day if you are a fan of crime dramas, with the release of another season of a classic crime drama and a collection of movies from another classic crime drama. From CBS Home Entertainment comes Mannix - The Sixth Season, a six-disc set containing every episode of the 1972-1973 season of the series. We have a review of this DVD set in today's Digital Digest. Additionally, Shout! Factory is releasing Kojak - The Complete Movie Collection, an excellent collection of eight (the original pilot and seven post-series) movies featuring the iconic detective. Blog DVD Review: Mannix - The Sixth Season (CBS DVD, $49.99)

One of America's classic private eyes from the '70s returns to DVD once again with Mannix - The Sixth Season. The six disc set contains all 24 episodes from the 1972-1973 of the action-packed, crime-solving series starring Mike Conners as Joe Mannix, and Gail Fisher as his secretary Peggy Fair, in a six-disc set.
The sixth season begins with "The Open Web," where Mannix leads the manhunt for a gang leader after he escapes from police custody. Mannix is out to investigate who killed an attorney's high-profile client in "The Crimson Halo." A pilot doesn't live to see the presentation of an experimental plane in "Portrait of a Hero." In "To Kill a Memory," an amnesiac soldier believed to be dead suddenly returns. A child's prize winning stamp collection could be motivation for murder in "The Upside Down Penny." In "One Step to Midnight," the granddaughter of an exiled mob boss is being stalked by one of her grandfather's dangerous friends. Crop dusters are missing in "Harvest of Death." Mannix investigates the death of a fellow private eye in "A Puzzle for One," and ends up taking on one of his cases in the meantime.
Mannix has to clear the name of the son of one of Peggy's friends after clues lead to him being the perpetrator of a fatal mugging in "See No Evil." In "A Game of Shadows," Mannix searches for a wanted killer with no identity. A hit-and-run leads to murder accusations for a man in "A Matter of Principle." Peggy goes undercover as a hooker to break up a drug ring in "Out of the Night." In "The Faces of Murder," Mannix must sift through a family of lies after a brother and sister confess to the same crime. A bum's patchwork coat makes him a murder target in "To Quote a Dead Man." The season concludes with "The Danford File," where political blackmail takes an eerie turn when all clues point to the blackmailer being dead.

The packaging for this set is just like the previous releases, employing the usual Viva-case. On the cover, we have a large photo of Joe Mannix, along with the set title, and like the previous sets, there are six "bullets" shown on the cover to indicate the sixth season. On the back, there are several episode snapshots, along with a very generic description of the series. Inside, you'll find the six discs, all of which have gray artwork with the series logo on them. Each disc contains exactly four episodes. Also, inside the case, you'll find a listing of all of the episodes, along with descriptions and original airdates.
As has been the case in the previous releases, the menus on this set are actually very nicely done. The main menu on each disc begins with a video sequence similar to the opening credits, while the theme song plays in the background. After a few seconds, you get to the menu, which lists the episodes, along with Play All and Subtitles, on the bottom of the screen, and plays video clips from the episodes on the top of the screen. Once you select an episode, it plays right away. Chapters are placed throughout each episode at all of the appropriate places.
The video and audio quality on this set is excellent. Like most other CBS DVD releases, considerable effort was taken to remaster the episodes to bring them up to current standards as best as possible. There really don't seem to be any major defects in the video or audio, and even grain and debris seems to be kept to a minimum. The black levels on the video seem to be a tiny bit off, but it isn't too bad. The audio is presented in mono, and is mostly loud and clear. Every episode on the set contains English subtitles.
There are no special features on this set at all. It would have been nice to have seen some original promos or something along those lines. Apparently, there is an on-going legal dispute between Mike Connors and CBS regarding royalties on these sets, so I wouldn't expect to see him taking part in any new special features on these sets.
Despite being a barebones set, this is still another great set for the series. I have a feeling that we will certainly see the final two seasons in the upcoming year or so, but they'll likely be barebones sets, just as this one and most of the previous ones have been. It is really too bad, considering that this series is a fan favorite. But it is really nice to see that this series has been coming along rather nicely on DVD. Fans of the series will definitely want to own this release, and if you've never seen the series, you may enjoy it if you are a fan of '70s crime drama. This series is definitely one of the "classics" and has rightfully earned that spot.

Retroality.tv (www.retroality.tv) - Like last week, we're going more into pop-culture territory again this week than we normally do for our Click of the Week, but it is for a good pop-culture television website. Retroality.tv will certainly appear at first glance to be another blog, just from the perspective of a different person. However, the "different person" who runs this particular blog is Chris Mann, a name that many of our blog readers know. And if you don't know who he is, we'll just tell you who he says he is, described in his own word: "A TV tell-all author and producer, Chris has covered celebrities, controversy, pop culture and health as a freelance writer for the LA Times, TV Guide, emmy, Radar and lifestyle magazines." In other words, he is no bedroom blogger, but he goes out to get the stories, interviews, and covers the celebrities--the good, the bad, and the ugly--as a career. Given that, it should be no surprise what this website is all about.
For the most part, you'll find most of Mann's recent articles from various publications on this website, and a lot of them are about the television stars that we all know and love. You'll also find some original pieces on this website, complete with Mann's ability to uncover parts of the story that we haven't heard before. And just this past October, one of the newest features of the website debuted, the "Retroality.TV Presents Reimagine That! with Chris Mann" podcast, which makes appearances with new episodes roughly once a month. You'll find many interviews and scoops here, and considering that it is still a relatively new feature, there are still a lot of possibilities for the feature as time goes on. Original Sitcoms Coming To Weekend Syndication In Fall 2012; Sitcom Stars On Talk Shows (Week of January 23, 2012)
Entertainment Studios, Inc., the largest independent producer and distributor of first-run syndicated television programming for broadcast television stations, and owner of seven 24-hour HD television networks, proudly announces the launch of two primetime first-run sitcoms for Fall 2012. Entertainment Studios has ordered a whopping 104 episodes of The First Family, a sitcom about an African-American family that resides in The White House. The company has also ordered 104 episodes of Mr. Box Office, a sitcom about the biggest movie star in the world who is sentenced to community service teaching English at the toughest high school in America. The sitcoms are currently being staffed by top network pedigree writers and producers. Production is set to begin this summer.
We will have more on this as we get closer to summer, but it is nice to have original sitcoms return to weekend broadcast stations. There have been many good first-run syndicated sitcoms in the past such as Small Wonder, Charles in Charge, Out of this World and Harry and the Hendersons. Perry Mason Returns To Hallmark Movie Channel; Leverage Heads To Syndication In Fall 2012
Hallmark Channel's movie network The Hallmark Movie Channel will bring back reruns of Perry Mason starting President's Day! The classic Raymond Burr series will start off with a 24-hour President's Day Marathon on Monday, Feb. 20, 2012 starting bright and early at 6am! Perry Mason will then start airing every weekday as well starting Tuesday, Feb. 21 and will air weekdays at 12 noon ET and 1pm ET, replacing Matlock. It seems Matlock will be off the schedule, but the two-hour movies will still pop-up on weekends from time to time. No word on when the regular Matlock airings will return, but you can still catch it on WGN America and in local syndication (if your market airs it). Perry Mason will be the lead-in to Murder, She Wrote, which remains weekdays at 2pm & 3pm ET. The Angela Lansbury drama will also still air at 12am & 1am, but Perry Mason will not get an encore. As you know, Murder, She Wrote also airs on TV Land, while Perry Mason can also be seen on MeTV Network and the two-hour movies pop-up from time to time on Encore Suspense.
No other series airs on The Hallmark Movie Channel and rightfully so, since it is a movie network. Stay with us for any further updates and we'll let you know if Matlock does indeed return at some point, but for now the verdict is in and Perry Mason is in!
Trifecta Entertainment & Media announced a two year deal to bring Leverage, the hit TNT television drama from Dean Devlin's Electric Entertainment, to the CBS-owned stations in 13 markets, beginning in Fall 2012. The fast-paced, light hearted caper series, recently picked up for its fifth season on TNT, will air on weekends on WCBS in New York, KCAL/KCBS in Los Angeles, WBBM in Chicago, KYW/WPSG in Philadelphia, KTVT/KTXA in Dallas, KPIX/KBCW in San Francisco, WBZ/WSBK in Boston, WUPA in Atlanta, WWJ/WKBD in Detroit, KSTW in Seattle, WCCO in Minneapolis, WPCW in Pittsburgh and WJZ in Baltimore.
Leverage follows a five-person team: a grifter, a hacker, a thief, a retrieval specialist, and their leader, former insurance investigator Nathan Ford (Hutton), who use their skills to right corporate and governmental injustices inflicted on ordinary citizens. In its fourth season, Leverage averaged more than 4.8 million viewers, up 10% over season three.

Cougar Town Returns On Valentine's Day On ABC; Sheen's New Sitcom Anger Management Premieres In June On FX
Yesterday we hinted that the Cougar Town season premiere date would be revealed and it was. We broke the news on Twitter that the series will return for its third season on Tuesday, Feb. 14 - Valentine's Day - at 8:30pm. The comedy will air Tuesdays at 8:30pm. It has a 15 episode order (down from the original 22 it was given last May) since it is launching in mid-season. The series will air repeat free from Feb. 14 to May 15. On the third season premiere episode "Ain't Love Strange," Jules (Courteney Cox) is miffed when Grayson (Josh Hopkins), who has an ulterior motive, calls her "predictable," while Ellie (Christa Miller) frets that little Stan is turning into a "devil child," or even worse, could grow up to be like Laurie (Busy Phillips) and Travis (Dan Byrd) likes his new off campus housing, until Bobby (Brian Van Holt) tries to convince him to take dog Travis in.
Cougar Town is essentially replacing Work It, which was pulled after just two episodes. Repeats of Last Man Standing are airing for the rest of January in this timeslot. It is unclear right now what is airing at 8:30pm on Feb. 7, but Cougar Town will launch the week after on Feb. 14. Show some love and watch Cougar Town on Valentine's Day! Penny can!
FX announced Sunday at the TCA Winter 2012 Press Tour that Charlie Sheen's sitcom adaptation of the Adam Sandler-Jack Nicholson big screen comedy Anger Management will premiere in June 2012. Previously it was announced just as "Summer 2012." He'll fill the Nicholson role of an anger management counselor. The series of course will mark Sheen's return to television following his firing from the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men last year following his erratic behavior. Sheen was on hand at the TCA winter press tour on Sunday.
FX also airs reruns of Two and a Half Men, so the new sitcom is a perfect fit for them. Ten episodes will air for sure of this new comedy and if ti does well, it will get a bulk order of about 90 episodes. There is plenty still to come on Anger Management, such as an actual premiere date and timeslot. So you'll want to stay with us, but we just had to mention that it was being introduced at the TCA winter press tour.

TCA Winter 2012 Press Tour: Cable, Includes 4th Season of Hot in Cleveland; ABC Removes Work It From Schedule
We were pretty busy yesterday with our scoop on Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers reuniting, so we couldn't bring you the TCA Winter 2012 Press Tour news for cable that was held this past weekend. The biggest news for us came from TV Land. TV Land has picked up its fifth original sitcom, Have Faith, starring Cedric "The Entertainer. This sitcom is not to be confused by the late '80s ABC short-lived sitcom that was produced by John Ritter. The network has ordered 12 episodes for the first season, which is tentatively set to premiere on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at 10:30pm following the second half of the third season of Hot in Cleveland. The sitcom, which was created by Cedric and Hot in Cleveland creator Suzanne Martin, revolves around Cedric's character, Reverend Boyce "The Voice" Ballentine, an R&B superstar-turned-minister who takes over as preacher of his father's church. Niecy Nash (Dancing with the Stars, Reno 911) also stars as the reverend's wife, Lolli. The pilot also features John Beasley as his father, Wesley Jonathan (What I Like About You) as his younger brother, and Jazz Raycole (My Wife and Kids) as his daughter. The character of Reverend Boyce originated on a second season episode of Hot in Cleveland in which Cedric guest-starred, making this a spin-off series.
Meanwhile, Hot in Cleveland, TV Land's first original sitcom starring Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Betty White, has also been greenlit by the network for a 24-episode fourth season. A syndication deal was recently reached for"Hot in Cleveland, giving CBS Television Distribution the domestic distribution rights for the series. This season pickup would bring "Hot in Cleveland" to 80 total episodes. The series, which is currently in its third season, averages 2.5 million total viewers per episode. The winter finale will be on Wednesday, Feb. 15, before the series returns for the second half of the season on June 6.
In other TV Land news, TV Land announced that the second season of the hit original sitcom Happily Divorced will begin production today (January 17, 2012) at CBS Radford Studios and will be filmed in front of a live studio audience. The twelve new episodes of Happily Divorced will now premiere on Wednesday, March 7 at 10:00 pm ET/PT. Previously it was set to return on June 6 at 10:30pm, but TV Land has changed their minds and will now test the waters by having this sitcom lead an hour. The sitcom, which stars Fran Drescher (The Nanny) is also inspired by her real-life story, and revolves around Fran, a Los Angeles florist, who finds out after 18-years of marriage that her husband is gay. Having to live under the same roof as her ex-husband and start over in the dating world is complicated but Fran jumps head first as only Fran can with laughter ensuing.
Last season, Drescher was reunited with her Nanny cast mates, Renee Taylor and Charles Shaughnessy. According to Nielsen, the first season of Happily Divorced averaged 2.2 million viewers and was a ratings success for TV Land. TV Land will air the second season of Retired at 35 as planned starting Wednesday, March 7 at 10:30pm for ten all-new episodes. TV Land has not given any updates yet on The Exes, which premiered on Nov. 30. If it gets another season we will let you know, but you can watch that show every Wednesday at 10:30pm through Feb. 1.
Elsewhere on cable, we will have even more Niecy Nash. TLC has ordered a docu-sitcom titled Leave it to Niecy. Blending together production and storytelling elements from both the traditional sitcom genre and the world of non-scripted reality shows, Leave it to Niecy offers a new balance of real-life humor through the lens of the beloved comedy format. The eight-episode half-hour series will premiere Wednesday, March 28 at 10/9c. The docu-sitcom takes viewers into Niecy and her husband Jay Tucker's home, which includes her three kids, and her opinionated mother. Together, they balance work, life, and love to create a modern blended family. Also, CMT is joining forces with Ryan Seacrest Productions on a new reality series. The eight-episode series, Melissa and Tye: A New Reality (working title), starring television personality Melissa Rycroft (Dancing With the Stars, The Bachelor) will premiere on CMT in April. Melissa, a SitcomsOnline favorite, the former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and America's favorite bachelorette definitely has gotten the last laugh after being dumped on national TV. She found the ultimate redemption by becoming a hugely popular contestant on Dancing with the Stars, which ignited a television hosting career on series and specials such as Good Morning America, Entertainment Tonight, Bachelor Pad, The Insider, and Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. But her greatest success came when she re-connected with the "real" man of her dreams, home town boyfriend, Tye Strickland. Now married with an eleven-month old daughter, Melissa is about to embark on her biggest journey yet - moving to Los Angeles from Texas to pursue her Hollywood dreams. The series will follow the couple as they navigate the trials and tribulations of being new parents, making a long-distance relationship work and making their dreams become a reality.
Finally, the world knows Shannen Doherty (Charmed, Beverly Hills 90210) as an icon, but she's also a devoted daughter and friend and now a newlywed. In the brand-new original series, Shannen Says, premiering Tuesday, April 3 at 9pm ET/PT, WE tv reveals a woman with substance and a sense of humor as she takes viewers on the hilariously bumpy ride of planning her wedding. Eight hour-long episodes of Shannen Says follow Shannen and her groom-to-be, famed photographer Kurt Iswarienko - two busy career-focused individuals with strong and often conflicting viewpoints - as they plan for their special day. Wedding preparations are sure to be stressful enough, but they've added to the pressure by allotting only seven weeks to get it all done! Pre-wedding jitters, a career-distracted groom, family turmoil and wardrobe malfunctions should be enough to make them pull the plug - but maybe love will conquer all in Shannen Says. After being engaged for over a year, Shannen and Kurt finally set a wedding date and did we already mention it's only seven weeks away? Shannen and Kurt are new to actual wedding planning and being from very different backgrounds with loyal sets of opinionated friends and family, they have quite an undertaking ahead of them. Among the highlights on this series, Shannen's Dancing with the Stars partner Louis Van Amstel is set to help the couple with their first dance.
We broke the news on the internet on late Friday that ABC has pulled new sitcom Work It off the schedule after just two episodes. The series premiered to a 2.0 18-49 rating, which was weak but doable. However, by the second episode the series dropped to a 1.5 18-49 rating and ABC has since then pulled the series. Repeats of Last Man Standing will air at 8:30pm starting tonight for at least the next three weeks. The Tim Allen comedy will also air in its normal 8:00pm slot.
ABC has not yet announced what will air Tuesdays at 8:30pm starting Feb. 7. One option of course is to air the unscheduled third season of Cougar Town. Or not air them at all ever. We'll let you know if they do end up airing them somewhere whether it be on TV or online.
Meanwhile, Hot in Cleveland, TV Land's first original sitcom starring Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Betty White, has also been greenlit by the network for a 24-episode fourth season. A syndication deal was recently reached for"Hot in Cleveland, giving CBS Television Distribution the domestic distribution rights for the series. This season pickup would bring "Hot in Cleveland" to 80 total episodes. The series, which is currently in its third season, averages 2.5 million total viewers per episode. The winter finale will be on Wednesday, Feb. 15, before the series returns for the second half of the season on June 6.
In other TV Land news, TV Land announced that the second season of the hit original sitcom Happily Divorced will begin production today (January 17, 2012) at CBS Radford Studios and will be filmed in front of a live studio audience. The twelve new episodes of Happily Divorced will now premiere on Wednesday, March 7 at 10:00 pm ET/PT. Previously it was set to return on June 6 at 10:30pm, but TV Land has changed their minds and will now test the waters by having this sitcom lead an hour. The sitcom, which stars Fran Drescher (The Nanny) is also inspired by her real-life story, and revolves around Fran, a Los Angeles florist, who finds out after 18-years of marriage that her husband is gay. Having to live under the same roof as her ex-husband and start over in the dating world is complicated but Fran jumps head first as only Fran can with laughter ensuing.
Last season, Drescher was reunited with her Nanny cast mates, Renee Taylor and Charles Shaughnessy. According to Nielsen, the first season of Happily Divorced averaged 2.2 million viewers and was a ratings success for TV Land. TV Land will air the second season of Retired at 35 as planned starting Wednesday, March 7 at 10:30pm for ten all-new episodes. TV Land has not given any updates yet on The Exes, which premiered on Nov. 30. If it gets another season we will let you know, but you can watch that show every Wednesday at 10:30pm through Feb. 1.
Elsewhere on cable, we will have even more Niecy Nash. TLC has ordered a docu-sitcom titled Leave it to Niecy. Blending together production and storytelling elements from both the traditional sitcom genre and the world of non-scripted reality shows, Leave it to Niecy offers a new balance of real-life humor through the lens of the beloved comedy format. The eight-episode half-hour series will premiere Wednesday, March 28 at 10/9c. The docu-sitcom takes viewers into Niecy and her husband Jay Tucker's home, which includes her three kids, and her opinionated mother. Together, they balance work, life, and love to create a modern blended family. Also, CMT is joining forces with Ryan Seacrest Productions on a new reality series. The eight-episode series, Melissa and Tye: A New Reality (working title), starring television personality Melissa Rycroft (Dancing With the Stars, The Bachelor) will premiere on CMT in April. Melissa, a SitcomsOnline favorite, the former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and America's favorite bachelorette definitely has gotten the last laugh after being dumped on national TV. She found the ultimate redemption by becoming a hugely popular contestant on Dancing with the Stars, which ignited a television hosting career on series and specials such as Good Morning America, Entertainment Tonight, Bachelor Pad, The Insider, and Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. But her greatest success came when she re-connected with the "real" man of her dreams, home town boyfriend, Tye Strickland. Now married with an eleven-month old daughter, Melissa is about to embark on her biggest journey yet - moving to Los Angeles from Texas to pursue her Hollywood dreams. The series will follow the couple as they navigate the trials and tribulations of being new parents, making a long-distance relationship work and making their dreams become a reality.
Finally, the world knows Shannen Doherty (Charmed, Beverly Hills 90210) as an icon, but she's also a devoted daughter and friend and now a newlywed. In the brand-new original series, Shannen Says, premiering Tuesday, April 3 at 9pm ET/PT, WE tv reveals a woman with substance and a sense of humor as she takes viewers on the hilariously bumpy ride of planning her wedding. Eight hour-long episodes of Shannen Says follow Shannen and her groom-to-be, famed photographer Kurt Iswarienko - two busy career-focused individuals with strong and often conflicting viewpoints - as they plan for their special day. Wedding preparations are sure to be stressful enough, but they've added to the pressure by allotting only seven weeks to get it all done! Pre-wedding jitters, a career-distracted groom, family turmoil and wardrobe malfunctions should be enough to make them pull the plug - but maybe love will conquer all in Shannen Says. After being engaged for over a year, Shannen and Kurt finally set a wedding date and did we already mention it's only seven weeks away? Shannen and Kurt are new to actual wedding planning and being from very different backgrounds with loyal sets of opinionated friends and family, they have quite an undertaking ahead of them. Among the highlights on this series, Shannen's Dancing with the Stars partner Louis Van Amstel is set to help the couple with their first dance.
We broke the news on the internet on late Friday that ABC has pulled new sitcom Work It off the schedule after just two episodes. The series premiered to a 2.0 18-49 rating, which was weak but doable. However, by the second episode the series dropped to a 1.5 18-49 rating and ABC has since then pulled the series. Repeats of Last Man Standing will air at 8:30pm starting tonight for at least the next three weeks. The Tim Allen comedy will also air in its normal 8:00pm slot.

Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers Reunite After Over 30 Years! To Air Feb. 2 On The Web; 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards Winners
After over 30 years, Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers have reunited! Yes, the Three's Company co-stars who have not spoken to each other since the whole Suzanne Somers contract dispute started during season five of Three's Company, which was in 1980-81, have now finally reunited. We have all seen the E! True Hollywood Story and all of the reports on this feud on various programs like Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition, TV Guide's Truth Behind the Sitcom Scandals, and others over the years, but I don't think anyone really thought that Joyce and Suzanne would ever reunite, but they now have! Sources tell SitcomsOnline, which includes Chris Mann - author of Come and Knock On Our: A Hers and Hers and His Guide to Three's Company - and also Joyce DeWitt's camp, that the reunion happened in early December 2011 (last month) as Suzanne's representatives asked Joyce's representatives about a possible on-camera reunion. After some back and forth, both sides agreed and Joyce agreed to appear with Suzanne on-camera on Suzanne's new web series Breaking Through from CafeMom, which premiered on Jan. 5. The web series airs every Thursday on CafeMom.com and on YouTube. Word first got out of this reunion last Thursday when on episode two, which featured guests Kathie Lee Gifford & Hoda Kotb (Today 4), that the two will finally reunite. Watch episode two at around the 2:08 mark and you'll see Suzanne bring it up to Kathie Lee and Hoda. What is Breaking Through about? It's Suzanne Somers new web series that talks about becoming an empowered patient, staying healthy and sexy, and she also has a bunch of special guests to join the fun and it is new every Thursday! I suggest you watch episode one as well, as it seems that "break through" from that episode really got Suzanne thinking about life and perhaps that is one of the reasons she finally decided to reunite with Joyce DeWitt?
So when is this actually going to air? Joyce DeWitt's camp tells us that the reunion will hit the internet on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012 as part of the fifth episode of Breaking Through. This is certainly a break though (pun intended)! Suzanne Somers has turned down so many reunions in the past, like appearing on John Ritter's 8 Simple Rules sitcom in 2002 and an actual Three's Company reunion that Fox was developing back in 2002. But since the passing of John Ritter in 2003, all reunion talk was never spoken about again and rightfully so, since you can't have an actual reunion without John. Our friend Chris Mann will do a better job in detailing all of the reunions that were planned in the past on his Reimagine That podcast on Retroality very soon! So you won't want to miss hearing that! It will air in late January just in time for the Joyce & Suzanne reunion air date of Feb. 2. Chris will also welcome guest star Lydia Cornell (Too Close for Comfort) so there is another reason to listen. And as we mentioned before, Chris is working on a 35th anniversary update of his book Come and Knock On Our: A Hers and Hers and His Guide to Three's Company, which is planned for release in fall 2012.
So as we near the 35th anniversary of Three's Company this March, we get this wonderful news that Joyce and Suzanne have reunited and made up. This is a historic feat and I'm so glad it has finally happened. Perhaps now we will finally get an actual retrospective reunion with the remaining members of the cast, which besides Joyce & Suzanne include Richard Kline (Larry), Priscilla Barnes (Terri), Jenilee Harrison (Cindy) and Anne Wedgeworth (Lana). I think ABC or another network could really come up with something like this and I'm sure it will be a big ratings hit. The Breaking Though reunion is a good start and I think it has opened the doors now for an actual TV reunion retrospective. If that doesn't happen, another option is a cast reunion on stage at the annual TV Land Awards. Wouldn't it be cool seeing all of the female roommates (Janet, Chrissy, Terri, & Cindy) that have lived with Jack Tripper all in one place? Let's not get that ahead of ourselves yet though, first we are very grateful that Joyce and Suzanne have reunited and you'll see it on CafeMom.com and on YouTube on Thursday, Feb. 2. We will have more on this in the coming weeks, but this story has now broke and I hope it will get the national media attention it deserves as a negative has turned into a positive! Suzanne is appearing on the CBS daytime talk show The Talk tomorrow, so perhaps she will mention that there and it will be all over the media like it should be. The door has opened, so come and knock on their door again!

Week 17 TV Ratings and Analysis; How the Sitcoms Did
2011-12 Week 17 TV Ratings (first four nights, Mon-Thu):

Week 17 (Jan. 9-15) Analysis: Week 17 had more new episode returns but still some repeats are airing, especially on Fox. The first four night network averages has CBS on top in all categories once again. ABC follows in a comfortable second. And then NBC and Fox are neck-and-neck for third in all categories, with NBC with the edge and a bigger edge than previous week. When the week is over with, CBS will win the week as they had a NFL Divisional Playoff game in primetime last night. Fox could make a run if the Giants/Packers game bleeds into primetime by a lot tonight, but NBC has no NFL this week so they could be fourth for the week even with the Golden Globes tonight. More on the prediction of week 17 below. As for last week, week 16, CBS won the week in all key categories thanks to the huge NFL Wild Card overrun on Sunday. NBC was so bad they only were in second despite an actual NFL Wild Card game in primetime on Saturday that boosted them big time. ABC was third in all categories, while Fox was fourth across the board again.
On Monday, it was a ABC victory with CBS in repeats. On ABC, The Bachelor started it off from 8-10pm with 7.31 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, down some from previous week's premiere, for its lowest rating ever but look for it to build as the weeks go on as there was the BCS Championship Game on ESPN. At 10pm, Castle returned with a new episode and did a solid 9.76 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, up a tad from its last new episode in December. For CBS, How I Met Your Mother was a repeat doing 6.47 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is decent for a repeat. Then a repeat of 2 Broke Girls followed doing a better 7.25 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, with nice builds from the lead-in like usual. At 9pm, a repeat pf Two and a Half Men did 8.35 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, which is good but it didn't built from its lead-in's 18-49 rating like it usually would. A repeat of Mike & Molly followed and did 7.72 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, holding on to its lead-in's ratings completely. A repeat of Hawaii Five-0 was next doing 6.19 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating. Fox aired two repeats of House and did just 3.3 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating at 8pm, down some from previous week. The the 9pm House repeat did 3.29 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, basically on par with previous week. New episodes return next Monday, as the two-hour premiere of Alcatraz is tomorrow night. NBC started the night with new game show Who's Still Standing? and did 6.19 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week. Then at 9pm a new Fear Factor did 5.53 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, down a tenth week-to-week. I really think this show should air at 8pm to jump start a night for NBC, bur yet another weird move by NBC. At 10pm, NBC aired a new episode of Rock Center with Brian Williams and it did an embarrassing 3.04 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, down big from previous week and tying its series low. The CW was in repeats, as the 8pm repeat of Gossip Girl did 680,000 viewers and a 0.2 18-49 rating. At 9pm a Hart of Dixie repeat did 870,000 viewers and a 0.3 18-49 rating.
On Tuesday, it was CBS with the win this time. CBS had a new NCIS do 21.03 million and a 4.1 18-49 rating, on par with previous week but total viewers was up solidly from previous week. It seems this show gets 20-22 million every January. Then NCIS: Los Angeles did 16.6 million and a 3.3 18-49 rating, down some from previous week despite a higher lead-in. And at 10pm, a new Unforgettable did 11.2 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, down a half a point from previous week. Weird how this show goes up and down like that. ABC started with new comedy Last Man Standing with Tim Allen leading the night off doing 7.57 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating for a new showing, which was down from previous week and a series low. The New Hampshire primary results were before it for a few minutes (some market preemptions also), so that might have threw it off. At 8:30pm week two of Work It followed doing 4.9 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, down a half a point from previous week, and thus ABC has pulled the series after just two episodes. I didn't think it was all that bad in quality, but the hate has been overwhelming. Repeats of Last Man will air starting this week for the next three weeks. Then at 9pm, ABC aired a new Celebrity Wife Swap and did 5.21 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, on par with previous week and solid. This is reality filler until the new drama The River launches on Feb. 7. Body of Proof was next at 10pm and was also new doing 6.9 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, which was up a tenth from previous week. If ABC wants to create programming for Fridays next season, perhaps this show is an option--I think it should be back one way or another as it does OK when Dancing airs. Fox aired a repeat of Glee and did only 3.1 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, up some from previous week's repeat. Then the comedies took the 9pm hour with a repeat of New Girl doing 3.34 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, on par with previous week. Then at 9:30pm a Raising Hope repeat did 2.83 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week. NBC was next with The Biggest Loser from 8-10pm doing 6.65 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, which is on par with its premiere the previous week. At 10pm, NBC aired a new Parenthood and did just 4.7 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which is below normal again but on par with previous week. The CW preempted 90210 and Ringer for the movie Table for Three and did only 590,000 viewers and a 0.2 18-49 rating.
Wednesday it was ABC with the win. First, CBS started the night off with a repeat of Criminal Minds at a special time doing 8.54 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, which is decent. Then from 9-11pm, Criminal Minds and CSI were preempted for the People's Choice Awards that did 8.88 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, down from last year and its lowest telecast ever. ABC was all-new for its Laugh On comedy block with The Middle doing 9.45 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, which is solid and down a tenth week-to-week. Suburgatory followed at 8:30pm with 8.75 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, identical to previous week. Solid. The mega hit Modern Family was next at 9pm and it did 12.12 million and 5.1 18-49 rating for a new episode, down from previous week as I guess the awards was a factor. At 9:30pm, Happy Endings was new and did 6.68 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, solid and consistent but down a few tenths from previous week. At 10pm a new episode of the addicting Revenge did 7.58 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, down a tenth from previous week. This week's episode looks like a thriller! Fox aired a repeat of Mobbed doing 2.76 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating at 8pm. Then at 9pm a new Mobbed special did just 3.42 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, but up a tenth from previous week. NBC opened the night with the new night and time premiere of Whitney doing 5.79 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, not great but not terrible. I just don't think it will stay at this level. The series premiere of Are You There, Chelsea followed with 6.18 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, building from its lead-in. Will this be enough for NBC or will it go down a lot this week when Idol premieres? At 9pm, Harry's Law was all-new doing 8.39 million and only a 1.2 18-49 rating. It is so old skewing. And at 10pm, Law & Order: SVU was new too and did 8.4 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, building sharply from its lead-in and good for second place in the time period. The CW had the season premiere of One Tree Hill at 8pm doing 1.72 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating. Then at 9pm an immediate repeat did 740,000 viewers and a 0.3 18-49 rating. Interesting that they aired an immediate repeat.
Thursday it was CBS over ABC. Either CBS or ABC keeps winning nights the past two weeks from Mon-Thurs. ABC opened the night with a new Winter Wipeout doing a solid 7.12 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, but down from previous week's premiere. At 9pm, a new Grey's Anatomy aired doing 10.71 million and a 3.8 18-49 rating, great but down from its season high the previous week. At 10pm, Private Practice was next and did a solid 6.55 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, which was down some from previous week. CBS opened with a new The Big Bang Theory at 16.13 million and a 5.3 18-49 rating, great for likely the #1 TV show airing of the week. Then the series premiere of Rob was next doing 13.47 million and a 4.1 18-49 rating, up from any airing of Rules of Engagement this season. Keep in mind, the canceled $#*! My Dad Says opened similarly, so let's not call Rob a big hit just yet. It's a good start with Idol coming this week. A new Person of Interest benefited from the stronger lead-in and did 14.86 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, its best numbers in a while. A new The Mentalist followed and did 13.65 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, its usual performance. Fox aired a new Bones at 8pm doing 8.64 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, solid. But the series premiere of the spin-off series The Finder at 9pm did just 5.5 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, not good. Will an Idol lead-in help? We shall see this week. NBC was all-new with the season premiere of 30 Rock up first doing just 4.47 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, its lowest premiere ever. A bit better than Community maybe. Then Parks and Recreation was next doing 4.09 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating. The Office was next at 9pm doing 5.9 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating. At 9:30pm Up All Night moved to its new night and time and did 4.24 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, on par with Whitney. Face it, NBC doesn't have any scripted hits. At 10pm, it was the timeslot premiere of new drama The Firm and it did only 4.23 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating. Prime Suspect style. Total mismatch out of these comedies. The CW's big gun Vampire Diaries was all-new and did 2.86 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, down from previous week. At 9pm, new drama The Secret Circle was new and did 1.93 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating, on par with previous week despite the lead-in going down.
Now, final numbers for Friday and Saturday are not available, but CBS and ABC did decent on Friday night and won the night. ABC aired the two-hour finale of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition which did season best numbers and won the 9pm hour. CBS aired new episodes of its dramas lead by Blue Bloods at 10. NBC's Chuck was new but of course low at 8pm, while Grimm returned below normal and third place.
Saturday numbers have CBS of course winning the night by a huge margin with the NFL Divisional Playoff Game. It could have been higher even if the game was closer, but still huge. Fox had a little overrun that helped them for second, otherwise ABC's Miss America was solid and second place .
Tonight ABC's regular Sunday of AFV, Once Upon a Time, Desperate Housewives and Pan Am is all-new! Last Sunday Once Upon a Time did big even opposite the end of the Tebow game in the east/central. NBC has no NFL anymore on Sundays until next fall, but they have The Golden Globes tonight from 8-11pm, which could be second for the night. CBS has an all-new 60 Minutes at 7pm followed by the season premiere of Undercover Boss, then new episodes of The Good Wife and CSI: Miami. CBS will likely be fourth place with no NFL tonight. Fox has new episodes of the animated comedies from 8-10pm following the NFL Divisional Playoff overrun that could seal them first place for the night despite their actual line-up will probably be second or third from 8-10pm.
As for the week (week 17), it should be CBS with the win after the game last night. ABC will be second in HH/viewers, but Fox could come all the way back to second cause of NFL overrun tonight. If not, maybe third. NBC will not go down without a fight form tonight's awards, but will likely be fourth for the week. As for the coming week (week 18), it is the return of American Idol. Also we have new series Alcatraz premiering tomorrow night on Fox. Friday has the season premieres of Shark Tank and What Would You Do on ABC.

- The Simpsons (Fox) - A new episode did only 5.07 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating as it got hurt in the east and central zones by NFL Wild Card playoff overrun on CBS.
- The Cleveland Show (Fox) - A new episode at a special time of 8:30pm did 4.48 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, not too good but held nearly all of its lead-in's ratings. A repeat earlier at 7:30pm did just 2.36 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating.
- Bob's Burgers (Fox) - A repeat at 7pm did just 1.84 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating.
- Family Guy (Fox) - A new showing did 6.23 million and a 3.1 18-49 rating, the best of the Fox block again but it hasn't been doing great this season.
- American Dad! (Fox) - A new episode at 9:30pm did 4.79 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating. Not that good.
Monday Sitcoms
- How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - A repeat did 6.47 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is a bit below normal for this show in a repeat--but solid.
- 2 Broke Girls (CBS) - A repeat did 7.25 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, which is good for a repeat and built again from its lead-in.
- Two and a Half Men (CBS) - 8.35 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating for a repeat is solid but for the second time in a row in repeat mode, it lost a tenth from its lead-in's 18-49 rating.
- Mike & Molly (CBS) - A repeat did 7.72 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, solid and held 100% of its lead-in's ratings.
Tuesday Sitcoms
- Last Man Standing (ABC) - A new episode in its 8pm half-hour did 7.57 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, which is a series low. Could be better and will be better in coming weeks, as there was some preemptions for New Hampshire primary and all markets started it a few minutes late.
- Work It (ABC) - Week two did 4.9 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, which is not good. If it did its premiere numbers then ABC would have taken it, but this is not good and ABC has pulled it now. If it ever airs again, it will be to burn-off episodes.
- New Girl (Fox) - A repeat did 3.34 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, which is on par week-to-week.
- Raising Hope (Fox) - A repeat did 2.83 million and only a 1.0 18-49 rating, which is up a tenth from the previous week.
- The Middle (ABC) - A new showing did 9.45 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, another solid showing but down a tenth from previous week.
- Suburgatory (ABC) - A new episode did 8.75 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, exactly the same from previous week. Consistent.
- Whitney (NBC) - A new episode on its new night and time started off with 5.79 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, which is actually an OK launch but can it stay here with hurricane Idol coming? Probably not.
- Are You There, Chelsea? (NBC) - The series premiere did 6.18 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, building from its lead-in and doing OK. Like with the lead-in, it probably won't hold up. At least it will be better than Free Agents. Hopefully.
- Modern Family (ABC) - A new episode did 12.12 million and a 5.1 18-49 rating, but that was down from previous week with the People's Choice Awards airing on CBS. Still #1 for the night and probably #2 for the week in TV shows.
- Happy Endings (ABC) - A new episode did 6.68 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, solid and only down a few from previous week. See retention doesn't matter for this show as its lead-in was down more and it didn't go as down as much.
Thursday Sitcoms
- The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A new episode did 16.13 million and a 5.3 18-49 rating, great return with new episodes. Nothing much more to say.
- Rob (CBS) - The series premiere did 13.47 million and a 4.1 18-49 rating, which is very good. It will be interesting how much it drops this week. I guess quality sometimes doesn't count as this pilot wasn't very good.
- 30 Rock (NBC) - The season premiere did just 4.47 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating. This could be the last season maybe?
- Parks and Recreation (NBC) - A new episode followed with only 4.09 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, but it did build a bit from its lead-in.
- The Office (NBC) - A new airing at 9pm did 5.9 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, by far the best of the block for NBC.
- Up All Night (NBC) - A new airing on its new night and time did 4.24 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating. That's Whitney style.
Friday Sitcoms
- None.
Saturday Sitcoms
- None.
Airing tonight (Sunday) are new episodes of Fox's animated comedies from 8-10pm following NFL action, with the series premiere of Napoleon Dynamite at 8:30pm and another new episode at 9:30pm.
Summing it up. The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Rob, Suburgatory, The Middle, The Office, Happy Endings, 2 Broke Girls, Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as Are You There Chelsea, Whitney) or just plain old terrible (such as Work It, 30 Rock).

Digital Digest: April Showers of DVD Releases; Kojak - The Complete Movie Collection DVD Review
Happy Saturday and welcome to Digital Digest! We are very happy to say that we have a very busy news week this week, perhaps one of our biggest ones in months. And of course, we have our preview of Tuesday's releases and a review of Shout! Factory's upcoming release of Kojak - The Complete Movie Collection. Let's get going!
April is going to be a very busy month for DVD releases, but what will perhaps be the most anticipated release is a series that Warner Home Video is releasing on DVD in season format for the first time ever: Eight is Enough! Finally, the Bradford family is coming to DVD with the April 17 release of Eight is Enough - The Complete First Season. The classic '70s comedy-drama ran for five seasons, and the first season only included nine episodes. But in any case, I'm sure that fans will be happy to see this series make it to DVD.
We mentioned just two weeks ago in our 2012 DVD Preview that there were rumors of Car 54, Where Are You? - The Complete Second Season would be coming to DVD in February, but at that time, it was just that--a rumor. But now, there is confirmation that the second (and final) season of the classic series is coming to DVD, just not in February. Look for Car 54, Where Are You? - The Complete Second Season to arrive on DVD on April 10.
Laverne & Shirley appeared to be an abandoned series with no new releases for almost four years, but that is all about to change on April 10. This week, CBS Home Entertainment announced their upcoming release of Laverne & Shirley - The Fifth Season. There is no word on whether the series related to it (Happy Days and Mork & Mindy) will also have follow-up releases anytime in the near future, but hopefully they will later this year. We'll let you know when and if we know!
The really surprising announcement from CBS Home Entertainment, though, is the announcement of the complete series of a short-lived series from the early '90s starring Bob Newhart. On April 3 (yes, another date in April!), look for Bob - The Complete Series on DVD. The DVD set will contain all 33 episodes of the short-lived series. Speaking of Bob Newhart, there is still no word as to what is going on with his first series, The Bob Newhart Show. The final two seasons have been available to pre-order on amazon.com for months, but they don't appear to be on the way anytime soon.
Yet another April release on the horizon is Designing Women - The Complete Sixth Season. On April 3, Shout! Factory will bring the next-to-last season of this series on DVD, bringing it one step closer to completion. Hopefully, we will see the series completed by the end of the year.
A series that Shout! Factory will complete by the end of the year, though, is Adam-12. While Adam-12 - Season Six isn't even out yet (it will be on Tuesday), Adam-12 - The Final Season (the official title for the seventh and final season) will be out on yet another day in April, on April 10. The series appeared to be abandoned at one point in time, so it is great to see it get all the way to the seventh season finally.
After all of those April releases, we end with one release that is actually coming a bit earlier than April, in fact, in March. On March 27, just ahead of the premiere of the sixteenth season, South Park - The Complete Fifteenth Season heads to DVD and Blu-ray! The three disc DVD set (and two disc Blu-ray) set will contain plenty of special features.
UPCOMING WEEK PREVIEW
Tuesday (January 17) has two releases from Shout! Factory, one which will only be sold as a Shout! Select title and the other that will have a regular retail release. The Shout! Select title that is being released on Tuesday is Webster - Season Four, and the regular retail release is Adam-12 - Season Six. So far, we have not received review copies of either of these.

Blog DVD Review: Kojak - The Complete Movie Collection (Shout! Factory, $29.98)

Ever wonder "who loves ya, baby?" Apparently, it is Shout! Factory, as they have recently licensed the classic detective series Kojak for release on DVD. Their next release in the classic series, though, is not one of the five seasons of the series, but rather a collection of all eight of the movies related to the series starring Telly Savalas, beginning with the 1973 pilot movie, movies from 1985 and 1987, and all five of the movies that aired as part of the ABC Mystery Movie series (in rotation with other franchises) in the 1989-1990 TV season.
The first movie included in this set is 1973's "The Marcus-Nelson Murders" (2:18:46), which actually served as the pilot movie for the series and was not included in Universal's original release of the first season. In this movie, Kojak suspects that a black youth who confessed to a murder of two white women is innocent of the crime, and was in fact coerced by the police into a confession by unethical means. Look for appearances by Lawrence Pressman and Ned Beatty in this movie.
Next up is 1985's "The Belarus File" (1:34:32), where Kojak investigates the death of several elderly Russian men. But it becomes disturbing is when Kojak finds who is behind the murders, and how their existence in the United States is with the full knowledge and approval of the US government. In 1987's "The Price of Justice" (1:35:24), the bodies of two young boys are found in the Harlem River, and all evidence seems to point to their mother being the obvious suspect. But Kojak is a smart guy and he is pretty sure that is wrong. So is she innocent, and if so, can he prove it?
The remaining five movies are all from the 1989-1990 season, as part of ABC's Mystery Movie rotation. These begin with "Ariana" (1:36:01), where an enemy of Kojak's and a drug lord use a pretty Greek woman to bait a trap for Kojak. In the next movie, "Fatal Flaw" (1:34:28), Kojak investigates the murder of a writer responsible for a mob exposé, but in the process, discovers that the dead man's wife is an old flame (played by Angie Dickinson). Also look for Don King and Sally Jessy Raphaël in this one. In "Flowers for Matty" (1:35:29), Kojak puts himself into "high society" to investigate some arts thefts that may be tied in with some major crime. In "It's Always Something" (1:35:59), Kojak's latest investigation leads him to being framed as a suspect in the murder of a call girl. The final movie, "None So Blind" (1:36:04), has Kojak becoming suspicious of a wealthy department store owner and his family after the death of an accountant. Jerry Orbach and Rip Torn both appear in this movie
The packaging for the set is very basic, with the set being in a standard Viva case. On the cover, we have a large photo of Kojak sucking a lollipop and standing in front of the New York City skyline. There are several snapshots from the movies, as well as another large photo of Kojak on the back of the case. Inside, you'll find the four discs, all of which have the same artwork as the cover art. There is also a listing of all of the movies, along with descriptions for each one, printed inside the case. The set contains eight movies, and each disc contains two of those movies.
The menus on the set are basic, but very nicely done. They are fairly identical on each disc, with a large photo of Kojak on the main menu, with options of Play All and a listing of the episodes. In the background of all discs, we have the Mike Post ABC Mystery Movie theme from 1989-1990 playing, which is actually really nice to hear on the set, even if it doesn't exactly fit in on the first disc. Chapters are placed throughout each movie.
All of these movies look and sound great. Of course, the 1973 pilot looks worse than the rest of the set, but that is understandable, as it is the oldest movie on here. The audio sounds great all throughout the set. But one thing that I did find interesting about the video is the aspect ratio. The first three movies are presented in full-screen, as one would expect, but the five ABC Mystery Movie ones are presented in anamorphic widescreen. This is an interesting choice, and I'm honestly not sure how it affects this set. For me, I think it made the movies look even better, but some fans may disagree with that assessment. Unfortunately, there are no subtitles or closed-captioning on any of the movies.
Surprisingly, the set does have one special feature, and it is even a special feature that was produced exclusively for this set. On Disc 4, we have the "Who Loves Ya Baby" featurette (31:46), where we have a very nice documentary covering Kojak. This featurette isn't exactly about just the movies, but most of the footage used here is from the movies. Most of the interviews here consist of members of Telly Savalas' family (members of his family often appeared in Kojak), but we also see a few other people, including Angie Dickinson, who starred in the "Fatal Flaw" movie.
Watching this set was actually the first time I've ever truly watched Kojak. I have seen bits and pieces of a few episodes here and there over the years, but I have never actually sat down and watched the series at length, much less full-length movies. But I really enjoyed this set, and wish that there were more of these movies. I really like the detective series where the detectives don't see everything in the world in black or white, and actually have some depth perception and are capable of getting it right without resulting to corruption. And Theo Kojak manages to do that. Honestly, I have to admit that most of the movies on here (aside from the pilot, of course) reminded me of some of the prominent detective series of the 80s, such as Hunter or Miami Vice, but I don't really see that as a bad thing. After all, those were also great series. And I think that fans of series such as those, and naturally fans of Kojak, are guaranteed to love this set.

Just My Show (www.justmyshow.com) - This week, our Click of the Week is a more general pop culture website rather than a website just about television, but don't worry. We aren't becoming the VH-1 of websites, but instead we bring you this website because in the midst of the content that can be found on it, a great chunk of it (really, a majority) is TV related content on it. So with that long-winded introduction, what exactly is Just My Show? Well, we've actually mentioned it on our blog (though not in Digital Digest) several times in recent years. It is a website that has some very nice interviews with pop-culture icons, particularly classic TV stars, in a convenient podcast form.
There are many different ways to get started with the website, but I suggest going with the alphabetic list that is presented. This seems to make the navigation and finding a celebrity that you may be looking for rather simple, though some may prefer other means of navigating. From there, you can find links to all of the shows, featuring guest stars such as Harry Anderson, Chris Burke, Gary David Goldberg, Dave Madden, Marion Ross, Alan Young, and many others. Many of these are not isolated interviews, but many of the podcasts feature multiple guests, and run anywhere from 10 minutes up to an hour (with most near the 30 minute mark). And the website is on top of the technology curve as well; although you can certainly sit at your computer and listen to these interviews, they are also available to download from iTunes to your iPod, iPhone, or any other of the numerous portable devices. There is a lot to listen to here, and it is definitely worth checking out.

Fox Mid-Season Pilot Review: Napoleon Dynamite - Premieres January 15; Sitcom Stars On Talk Shows (Week of January 16, 2012)

From the big screen to the small screen, and from live-action to animation, Napoleon Dynamite is back! The 2004 film starring Jon Heder as the title character is back, eight years later, as Fox's newest animated series. Once again, you can follow the lives of Napoleon, Kip, Grandma, and of course, Pedro, as he struggles to deal with the trauma (well, mostly the hilarity) of being a very socially awkward teenager in the heart of Idaho. The new series brings back all of the same characters and even the same actors from the original movie, but this time they're all "drawn out" instead of acting in the series.

Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) plays the socially awkward teenager and the star of the series. Heder has had roles in the movies The Benchwarmers, Mama's Boy, and Blades of Glory, but clearly, he is best known for playing the movie role of the character that he plays in this series.
Aaron Ruell (Kip Dynamite) plays the role of Napoleon's 32-year-old brother who still lives with Grandma Dynamite. Besides Ruell's role in the movie, he is an accomplished director and photographer for television commercials.
Efren Ramirez (Pedro) reprises his classic role of Pedro, Napoleon's shy friend from Mexico, in the series. Ramirez has starred in movies such as Employee of the Month and made cameo appearances in movies such as Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Nacho Libre. He has appeared in TV series such as Boston Public, George Lopez, and Scrubs.
Tina Majorino (Deb) plays the role of the door-to-door sales woman who may have a crush on Napoleon. She has had regular roles in Camp Wilder, Big Love, and Veronica Mars, and also has appeared in roles in popular music videos.
Sandy Martin (Grandma Dynamite) plays the role of Napoleon and Kip's grandmother, who has the job of raising the two. Martin has appeared in movies such as 48 Hrs. and Speed, and also had a recurring role in Big Love.
Jon Gries (Uncle Rico) plays the role of the uncle who lives in a trailer, but often pops by. Gries has had roles in series such as The Pretender, Lost, Martin, and 24.
Diedrich Bader (Rex) plays the role of the local martial arts instructor. Bader has appeared in The Drew Carey Show, Office Space, and most recently, on the series Outsourced.

Pilot Plot:
For this review, we received a copy of the first two episodes of the series.
"Thundercone" (airs January 15 at 8:30PM ET/PT)
Napoleon has a serious acne problem that must be taken care of by any means necessary, and a trip to the drug store leads him to the last tube of a powerful (but recently banned) cream. Using the cream has serious consequences, but the best one for Napoleon is his ability to resist any pain. This allows him to join a local fight club, and while training for a big fight in the "Thundercone," Napoleon is noticed and admired by Kip's girlfriend (special guest star Amy Poehler). How will Kip get his girl back, and get even with his brother?
"Scantronica Love" (airs January 15 at 9:30PM ET/PT)
Professor Koontz (guest star Jermaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords) decides to use a Scantron machine to match students up romantically, but not all goes well when Napoleon is paired with a Japanese exchange student (Lauren Tom) instead of Deb. The matching, along with others, ends with problems for everybody.
Analysis:
The very first thing that I thought about this series before I even watched it was probably what many others are thinking. The movie was made in 2004 and it is now eight years later. Isn't it too late for a TV version of Napoleon Dynamite? Not necessarily. In fact, in my opinion, if the movie had that much of an impact to even be remembered eight years later, perhaps it does deserve to be a TV series, as opposed to the practice of making a TV series out of a movie just weeks or months after the movie hits theaters.
As for the quality of the series, I somewhat enjoyed the first two episodes of the series. Fox has planted some major bombs with some of their Sunday night animated series in recent years, and a lot of series that are just plain awful have made it to that lineup, almost all of which are quickly cancelled. However, when watching the first two episodes of this series, I really felt that there was a serious effort to make a realistic (to a certain limit) series that is meant to be enjoyed without any cheap shots or crass humor.
One potential bump that I can see for the series, though, is how well it'll actually fit into the Sunday night lineup. Admittedly, cheap shots and crass humor are what make up the core of Fox's animated sitcom lineup. And for all of the Seth MacFarlane series (and to a lesser extent for The Simpsons), this is what makes those series enjoyable and humorous. But as many fans of Napoleon Dynamite may know, the movie was known as being family-friendly fare without violence, sex, and inappropriate language, and other things along those lines. From the two episodes that I viewed, it appears that the series will be the same way, which is great for family viewing, but the question is whether or not that formula will work in a lineup where it is followed by Family Guy.
I should definitely give a disclaimer before I conclude my analysis. I have never actually seen the movie Napoleon Dynamite from beginning to end. So I really can't fully say how this series compares to the movie. However, from what I have seen of the movie, this series does seem to hold true to the core ideas of the movie.
Conclusion:
Honestly, I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed watching this series. It is something a little bit different from the ordinary, and had some great moments. Assuming that fans of the movie are interested in more, I think that those same fans will enjoy this series. Of course, the series may face challenges in recapturing that audience, and it may also suffer since it almost doesn't completely fit in with the other Sunday night series (even if it is an enjoyable series). In the days before federally mandated E/I programming, this series likely would have been made into a Saturday morning cartoon, where it would have been certain to succeed. Still, I'm anxious to see how this series develops and where it'll go, and unlike many pilots that I have seen in recent years, this is one that I would sincerely like to see succeed. So don't be a "frickin' idiot." Check out Napoleon Dynamite!

Assuming that fans of the movie are interested in more, I think that those same fans will enjoy this series. Of course, the series may face challenges in recapturing that audience, and it may also suffer since it almost doesn't completely fit in with the other Sunday night series (even if it is an enjoyable series).
