TV Land August 2010 Has The Nanny Join; ION Television Sees Strong Ratings for 2nd Quarter
August 2010 sees an addition of a new sitcom on TV Land, as The Nanny joins the line-up. The series will be borrowed from sister network Nick at Nite. We will let you know if it will continue on Nick at Nite as well, as soon as we get their August schedule. Perhaps by fall The Nanny will be gone from Nick at Nite as My Wife & Kids joins the schedule? Stay tuned. Anyway, back to TV Land August, The Nanny joins the schedule on Monday, Aug. 2 with a week-long marathon! The flashy girl from Flushing comes to TV Land in a week long star-studded marathon featuring the biggest guest stars and best episodes from the series' run. Whoopi Goldberg, Joan Collins, Billy Ray Cyrus, Celine Dion and even Liz Taylor are just a few of the friends Nanny Fine has coming along for the fun all week-long. Don't miss the craziness of this marathon from Monday to Friday from 6pm-9pm & 11pm-2am and if that's not enough, get even more of The Nanny marathon on the weekend (Saturday 12pm-9pm and Sunday 1pm-10pm). And don't miss Nanny Fine when she settles into her regular 8pm & 1am hour timeslots weeknights beginning Monday, August 9, 2010!
So what else will change by Aug. 9? Due to The Nanny airing in the 8pm hour, The Cosby Show goes from 8-9pm to 7-8pm and Sanford & Son goes from 7-8pm to 6-7pm, replacing All in the Family. That means All in the Family will only be morning now from 9-10am. In the late night, The Nanny will air in the 1am hour, so The Cosby Show is shifted to 2-3am, Home Improvement is shifted to 3-4am, and Three's Company from 4-5am.
On the weekends, The Nanny gets various weekend blocks on different times, mainly Saturday afternoons. It also gets a late night hour on weekends airing from 2:30am-3am, shifting Home Improvement to 3:30am & 4am, and cutting Three's Company to 4:30am-6am. Everything else remains the same on weekends and the rest of the schedule as well.
TV Land will have the season finale of Hot in Cleveland on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 10pm. Episode titles for the month are "The Play's the Thing" on Aug. 4, "Good Luck Faking the Goiter" on Aug. 11, and "Tornado" on Aug. 18. Hot in Cleveland revolves around three fabulous L.A. women of a certain age who are best friends (Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick, and Betty White). Their lives are changed forever when their plane – headed for Paris – unexpectedly lands in Cleveland and they soon rediscover themselves in a new "promised land." Loving their new home, the women find themselves living under one roof and battling the sassy caretaker of the property they have rented, played by the inimitable Betty White.
The third season of TV Land's hit original series She's Got The Look premieres the following week on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 10pm and is back to discover the next supermodel over the age of 35, hosted by Brooke Burke (Dancing with the Stars). The contenders will live in a house together and participate in weekly challenges to see who has what it takes to have "The Look." The winner will receive $100,000, a contract with the world-famous Wilhelmina Modeling Agency and a spread in SELF magazine. Emmy Award-Winner Allison Grodner returns as executive producer and has teamed up with executive producer Rich Meehan in their first project together under their new banner, Fly On The Wall Entertainment.

ION Television achieved continued ratings growth in second quarter 2010, up every single night of the week in primetime (Monday through Sunday, 8:00-11:00 PM), versus last year this time. Year over year, ION Television's primetime household ratings were up 56%; up 58% among Household Impressions (809,000 vs. 512,000); and up 60% in total viewership, bringing in an average of 1,050,000 total viewers (vs. 657,000 total viewers in 2009). Second quarter 2010 also marked ION Television's most watched primetime night ever (Monday through Sunday, 8:00-11:00 PM) among households, delivering 1,520,000. In addition, ION Television's ratings for key demos were up 57% among Adults 25-54 and up 76% among Adults 18-49. Household impressions were up 56% among Adults 25-54 (448,000 vs. 287,000); and up 76% among Adults 18-49 (391,000 vs. 222,000).
Criminal Minds household rating doubled the time period year over year, and more than doubled the time period in key demos for Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49. Total viewers household impressions doubled year over year, jumping from 522,000 to 1,062,000.
The year over year household rating time period increase for NCIS was an impressive 150%. Ratings for Adults 25-54 were up 119%, while the rating for Adults 18-49 more than doubled; and total viewers were up 140%. The year over year household impressions for NCIS increased an impressive 151% year over year (1,096,000 vs. 437,000).
Ghost Whisperer also grew its time period year over year. The series was up 33% in ratings among households; up 29% for Adults 25-54; and up 53% for Adults 18-49; plus total viewers were up by 35%. The series showed 34% growth among household impressions (598,000 vs. 447,000).
Also, Without a Trace is off to a strong start for ION Television. The series premiered on ION last Monday (July 5). The Thursday, July 8 airing at 8pm did a 1.0/2 HH rating/share, giving ION a tie with The CW on Thursday night in primetime with a 0.9 HH rating average, as NCIS did a 0.8 and 1.0 from 9-11pm. Without a Trace airs weeknights at 7pm & 8pm, Wednesdays at 9pm, and Fridays from 9pm-12am.

Summer Week 6 Sitcom Ratings; Coming Week Preview
Summer is in session and it's repeats galore mainly for sitcoms. We will be back with our normal weekly report with the first four nights numbers and analysis in the fall, but we still will have our regular how the sitcoms did all summer long, along with a coming week preview! Here are our summer ratings:

Tonight you can catch an all-new Sons of Tucson at 7pm on Fox followed by encores of Fox's animated comedies from 7:30-10 tonight. On Tuesday, ABC will have a repeat of Wipeout, then an all-new episode of the high stakes game show Downfall and the addicting Primetime: Family Secrets at 10. NBC has a new Losing it with Jillian and a two-hour America's Got Talent from 9-11pm. Fox preempts Hell's Kitchen for coverage of the 2010 MLB All-Star Game from Anaheim. And once again CBS and The CW are in repeats. Cable is good on Tuesdays too with a new Pretty Little Liars at 8 on ABC Family and the series premiere of new spy drama Covert Affairs starring the sexy Piper Perabo on USA Network at 10pm.

NBC has a new showing of game show Minute to Win It at 8, then a new America's Got Talent at 9pm followed by a repeat of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. - The Simpsons (Fox) - A repeat did only 2.2 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating. Way down from previous week because of the 4th of July.
- The Cleveland Show (Fox) - Just 2.15 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating for a repeat, way down from previous week but it did build from the lead-in in 18-49 ever so slightly.
- Family Guy (Fox) - A repeat did only 2.77 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating...way down from previous week. A repeat at 9:30pm did a bit better with 2.96 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating
- American Dad! (Fox) 2 episodes - A repeat at 7:30pm did just 1.15 million and a 0.5 18-49 rating, down from previous week. The regular 9:30pm airing was preempted.

Digital Digest: Hunter - The Complete Series DVD Review (7/27)

We have quite a bit of news this week. Sony has announced a 2-disc set for Rules of Engagement - The Complete Third Season. The September 14th release will include all 13 episodes and run 277 minutes. Why does this show never get a full season? Packaging, cost and other specs are available here. Ally McBeal - The Complete Third Season was originally supposed to be released by 20th Century Fox this week (July 13), but that won't be happening and no new date has been announced. Amazon.com is now taking pre-orders for both Ally McBeal - The Complete Fourth Season and Ally McBeal - The Complete Fifth Season. Pricing and packaging art is available here.
20th Century Fox has a press release for The Simpsons - The Complete Thirteen Season. It arrives on in stores on DVD and Blu-ray on August 24 or at Comic-Con in San Diego in July. Shout! Factory has pushed back the release date for The Larry Sanders Show - The Complete Series from September 28th to November 2nd. Suit up for the hilarious How I Met Your Mother - The Complete Fifth Season on September 21st. The bonus features and packaging are quite nice. 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has a press release for The Mary Tyler Moore Show - The Complete Seventh Season. It will also include the 'Final Curtain Call'. You don't often see these cast's final curtain call on DVD releases, so it's great they are including it. Starz/Anchor Bay will release Party Down - Season 2 on September 28th. Loretta Devine and Steve Guttenburg are among the guest stars.
Shout! Factory is working on a release of Rhoda - Season 4 for sometime later this year. It will be sold via their online store as part of their Shout! Select program, but you can usually find them on eBay or from Amazon.com marketplace sellers. Lionsgate has provided details and box art for their releases of Saturday Night Live - The Best of Adam Sandler and Saturday Night Live - The Best of Eddie Murphy. Universal will release Saturday Night Live - Best of '09/'10 on September 21st. The Cleveland Show - The Complete First Season has a release date of September 28th. Rick Hunter is a detective who doesn't take crap from anybody, and he proves that once again in Hunter - The Complete Series. He didn't care how he got the job done, just as long as he got it done and appropriate justice was served in the end. Own all seven seasons for the first time on DVD, including never before released seasons (seasons 4-7), of what was at the time (and even still to this day) one of the grittier detective dramas on TV.

Hunter - The Complete Series (Mill Creek, $99.98) brings all 7 seasons of the 80s NBC series to DVD...including the never before released on DVD last four seasons! This special collection includes all 152 episodes of this 3-time Emmy® nominated series on 28 DVDs! Get ready to reload as L.A. homicide detective Rick Hunter (Fred Dryer) and his partner Dee Dee McCall (Stepfanie Kramer) are back on the job! This series aired on NBC from 1984-1991. Seasons 1-3 were previously released by Anchor Bay and Mill Creek Entertainment re-released seasons 1-2, but now they are releasing them all.
Since we get all 152 episodes on this set, it is hard to cover memorable episodes from each season. However, the first three seasons have already come out on DVD and we have reviews of that, but seasons four through seven never came out on DVD, so we'll focus a bit more on that. Some memorable episodes include the season three two-part episode, "Hot Pursuit," where McCall and an informant are shot after the informant gives her information regarding a prostitution ring being run along truck routes and then Hunter is accused of murder when he travels to Mexico to meet with the pimp. On a season four episode, "Night on Bald Mountain," Hunter and McCall are stuck in an old house in a remote location with the victim's relatives during a storm. In the three-part season four episode, "City of Passion," Hunter and McCall investigate a series of homicides that appear to be committed as part of a Satanic Cult rite. Another three-part episode was done in season five titled "City Under Siege," when a police task force is established to assist in crime control, McCall goes undercover as a teacher when one is murdered. In the emotional season six finale, "Street Wise," McCall leaves the police force after rekindling a romance with an old flame and Hunter investigates a thief who is terrorizing homeless veterans. This was the last episode for Stepfanie Kramer. In the two-part season seven premiere, "Deadly Encounters," two Romanian immigrants are murdered in a robbery and an international killer is after the family of robbers who committed the crime. Like the previous Mill Creek sets (Seasons 1 and 2), the menus are very basic, but also nicely done, with the theme song playing on the main menu and options of Play All and Episode Select. The main menu has video clips playing on the top, with the show logo and gun below, then the menu options. When you go to Episode Select, it takes you to a menu that lists all of the episode numbers and titles, where the theme song continues to play. There are no scene selection menus, but chapters are placed appropriately throughout each episode. However, we only get 3 chapter stops per episode once again. Not enough!
As for the packaging, it is still cheap like it was on the individual seasons one and two sets. We have an outer box that holds a double thick keep-case with 28 black paper sleeves inside. This is TERRIBLE and cheap once again! The cover art has a shot of Hunter in sunglasses holding his gun and you see some buildings in the background. The color scheme is blue. The back of the case has basic series information along with a background of Hunter's face. We also have four screenshots of guest stars on the bottom. The disc artwork is the same on each disc with a shot of Hunter and McCall (though season seven doesn't have McCall but has her replacement, Novak), but each season the wording is in different color. Season one's wording is in white, season two's wording is in blue, season three's wording is in purple, season four's wording is in orange, season five's wording is in red, season six's wording is in beige, and season seven's wording is in a shade of blue. Each disc has the episode titles contained on the disc printed on the disc in the seasons's coloring. But again, there are no other episode lists contained within the set.
The video and audio is good. There is nothing to complain about. It "works for me!" It is about as good as it gets for a series that aired from 1984-1991. Obviously, the later seasons look a bit better because they are newer. View the runtimes above and some tidbits on the multiple part episodes. Once again, the first six seasons on this set does have a 30 second preview of the episode, with clips from the episode. I guess season seven didn't have that originally?
One again, there are no special features on the set. Mill Creek could have licensed those bonus features from Anchor Bay's versions of seasons one and two. Original promos would be nice, but I guess the :30 preview of each episode makes up for that. Maybe new interviews or those episodes of the short-lived revival series from 2002? Or even that TV movie from 1995! Something would be nice, even if Mill Creek didn't have to produce it!
There are once again the same problems with this set as with the previous Mill Creek sets, but we finally have the complete series on DVD. We didn't even have to wait for seasons 4-7 to be individually released. For die-hard fans, even though I don't think this set works, you should get it because we get every single episode of this series on DVD. It is too bad the packaging is cheap and the episodes don't have original music (with some episodes for sure edited). I have always liked this show, and I am glad Mill Creek continued the series after Anchor Bay dropped it after three seasons. For that, I'll say this set "works for me" (insert the catchy Hunter theme, preferably from season 5, here)!

We have quite a bit of news this week. Sony has announced a 2-disc set for Rules of Engagement - The Complete Third Season. The September 14th release will include all 13 episodes and run 277 minutes. Why does this show never get a full season? Packaging, cost and other specs are available here. Ally McBeal - The Complete Third Season was originally supposed to be released by 20th Century Fox this week (July 13), but that won't be happening and no new date has been announced. Suit up for the hilarious How I Met Your Mother - The Complete Fifth Season on September 21st. The bonus features and packaging are quite nice. 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has a press release for The Mary Tyler Moore Show - The Complete Seventh Season. It will also include the 'Final Curtain Call'. You don't often see these cast's final curtain call on DVD releases, so it's great they are including it. Starz/Anchor Bay will release Party Down - Season 2 on September 28th. Loretta Devine and Steve Guttenburg are among the guest stars.
Shout! Factory is working on a release of Rhoda - Season 4 for sometime later this year. It will be sold via their online store as part of their Shout! Select program, but you can usually find them on eBay or from Amazon.com marketplace sellers. Lionsgate has provided details and box art for their releases of Saturday Night Live - The Best of Adam Sandler and Saturday Night Live - The Best of Eddie Murphy. Universal will release Saturday Night Live - Best of '09/'10 on September 21st. The Cleveland Show - The Complete First Season has a release date of September 28th. Rick Hunter is a detective who doesn't take crap from anybody, and he proves that once again in Hunter - The Complete Series. He didn't care how he got the job done, just as long as he got it done and appropriate justice was served in the end. Own all seven seasons for the first time on DVD, including never before released seasons (seasons 4-7), of what was at the time (and even still to this day) one of the grittier detective dramas on TV.

Hunter - The Complete Series (Mill Creek, $99.98) brings all 7 seasons of the 80s NBC series to DVD...including the never before released on DVD last four seasons! This special collection includes all 152 episodes of this 3-time Emmy® nominated series on 28 DVDs! Get ready to reload as L.A. homicide detective Rick Hunter (Fred Dryer) and his partner Dee Dee McCall (Stepfanie Kramer) are back on the job! This series aired on NBC from 1984-1991. Seasons 1-3 were previously released by Anchor Bay and Mill Creek Entertainment re-released seasons 1-2, but now they are releasing them all.
Since we get all 152 episodes on this set, it is hard to cover memorable episodes from each season. However, the first three seasons have already come out on DVD and we have reviews of that, but seasons four through seven never came out on DVD, so we'll focus a bit more on that. Some memorable episodes include the season three two-part episode, "Hot Pursuit," where McCall and an informant are shot after the informant gives her information regarding a prostitution ring being run along truck routes and then Hunter is accused of murder when he travels to Mexico to meet with the pimp. On a season four episode, "Night on Bald Mountain," Hunter and McCall are stuck in an old house in a remote location with the victim's relatives during a storm. In the three-part season four episode, "City of Passion," Hunter and McCall investigate a series of homicides that appear to be committed as part of a Satanic Cult rite. Another three-part episode was done in season five titled "City Under Siege," when a police task force is established to assist in crime control, McCall goes undercover as a teacher when one is murdered. In the emotional season six finale, "Street Wise," McCall leaves the police force after rekindling a romance with an old flame and Hunter investigates a thief who is terrorizing homeless veterans. This was the last episode for Stepfanie Kramer. In the two-part season seven premiere, "Deadly Encounters," two Romanian immigrants are murdered in a robbery and an international killer is after the family of robbers who committed the crime. Tr3s Rebrands, Adds George Lopez; ABC Fall 2010 Schedule Premiere Dates; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of July 12, 2010)
On Monday (July 12), "MTV Tr3s" will become "Tr3s" and the name "MTV Tr3s" will no longer be used. Tr3s will continue to celebrate the bi-lingual/bi-cultural reality that embraces the three aspects of Latino life in the US - Latin American, American and US Latino.

Premiere dates for Fall Friday drama series Body of Proof and Friday reality series Secret Millionaire will be announced at a later time. As previously announced, Saturday Night Football premieres Saturday, September 4 at 8:00 p.m. ET. ABC launches the 2010-2011 season on Monday, Sept. 20 during premiere week with the season premieres of Dancing with the Stars from 8-10pm and Castle at 10pm. On Tuesday, Sept. 21, a special two-hour performance show of Dancing with the Stars will air from 8-10pm leading into the series premiere of drama Detroit 1-8-7. On Wednesday, Sept. 22, ABC returns their comedies with "Laugh on Wednesday" with the season premiere and a new time for The Middle at 8pm, followed by the series premiere of Better with You (formerly titled Better Together) at 8:30pm, the season premiere of megahit Modern Family is at 9pm, and the season premiere of quirky Cougar Town is at 9:30pm. The network will start production of 20 new episodes in October 2010 with a launch tentatively scheduled for January 2011. Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Betty White will return as series regulars for all 20 episodes. The first season has an order of 10 episodes, so the second season will double that!
Currently, Hot in Cleveland airs on Wednesday nights at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT) and is the network's first foray into original scripted programming. The show debuted June 16 to critical acclaim and record-breaking ratings. The series premiere was the highest-rated and most-watched show in all of cable that day among Adults 18-49, Adults 25-54, Women 18-49, Women 25-54 and Total Viewers according to The Nielsen Company. To date, the series is averaging a 2.1 rating among Adults 25-54, a 2.7 among Women 25-54, a 1.7 among Adults 18-49 and a 2.1 among Women 18-49. The show is delivering 4.7 million total viewers.
Following the domestic success, Endemol has acquired Hot in Cleveland for global distribution. The show premiered in Canada on July 5, 2010 and quickly became the #1 ranked new import comedy of the year. The premiere telecast delivered a whopping 1.82 million total viewers, which is the U.S. delivery equivalent of 11.8 million viewers. Endemol will launch the series at MIPCOM 2010.

ABC Adds More New Wipeout on Thursday, Shark Tank Now July 29; Our Emmy Nominations Picks
The hilarious obstacle course series Wipeout (which regularly airs Tuesdays at 8pm) has gained more all-new Thursday airings! The original three week plan (June 24, July 1, and July 8) of originals of Wipeout on Thursdays has now been extended by two more weeks! ABC will add two more all-new episodes of the hilarious series on Thursdays, July 15 and 22, leading into solidly performing summer drama Rookie Blue. This means the all-new episode of Shark Tank scheduled for July 15 will now be delayed by two weeks and will air, as of now, on Thursday, July 29 at 8pm. Repeats of Shark Tank will air for a month or so starting Thursday, Aug. 5. Also, ABC has pulled the sixth and final episode of high stakes game show Downfall for Tuesday, July 27, as ABC will air a two-hour repeat of Wipeout: Blind Date from June 1. Downfall is still slated to air the next two weeks (July 13 and 20), as of now.
In other ABC scheduling news, they will air encores of Rookie Blue on Saturday, July 17 and 24 starting at 9pm. Still no word on if Eastwick's final two episodes will be rescheduled (after being pulled out of its July 10 airings) or if canceled stuff like Romantically Challenged, Hank, Better Off Ted will get a chance to burn-off their remaining episodes.

In other ABC scheduling news, they will air encores of Rookie Blue on Saturday, July 17 and 24 starting at 9pm. Still no word on if Eastwick's final two episodes will be rescheduled (after being pulled out of its July 10 airings) or if canceled stuff like Romantically Challenged, Hank, Better Off Ted will get a chance to burn-off their remaining episodes.

I Love Lucy Marathon on Hallmark on July 11; Bio TV July 2010 Has Married with Children Biography and Return of Celeb Ghost Stories
As we noted last month, The Hallmark Channel will add an extra hour of I Love Lucy in the mornings starting next week (Monday, July 12) at 10am (so Lucy will air now 10am-1pm), now they have added a marathon the day before. On Sunday, July 11, 2010, The Hallmark Channel will have an all-day marathon of the classic '50s sitcom from 6am-4am.
The Hallmark Channel has had a consistent schedule since Who's the Boss? joined the line-up on May 17 with really no changes besides minor ones like the one happening on July 12 and the addition of The Partridge Family on weekend mornings. We have the August 2010 schedule and, as of now, the schedule is also the same, so fans should be happy. We will certainly have the fall schedule by the end of the month in our annual cable fall schedules barrage. So stay with us for that!
This month (July 2010) on Biography Channel will see the premiere of Biography: Married... with Children on Tuesday, July 14. A look at the over-the-top and controversial sitcom about a dysfunctional Chicago family that lasted 11 seasons on TV. The crude antics of the family's disgruntled father Al Bundy (Ed O'Neill), his tacky wife Peg (Katey Sagal), his ditzy daughter Kelly (Christina Applegate), and girl-chasing son Bud (David Faustino) delighted some viewers and offended others. The show was a huge departure from the picture-perfect families viewers often saw on television, but even as it ruffled feathers, the show represented a more realistic picture of the everyday problems that Americans were dealing with in the late '80s and '90s. The Biography premieres on July 14 at 10pm and encores at 2am. Surrounding this premiere will be encores of Biography episodes on Woody Harrelson, Ed O'Neill, and Carroll O'Connor.
Also of note, Biography: Rosie O'Donnell premieres on Tuesday, July 21 at 10pm. This premiere will be surrounded by encores of Biography episodes of fellow comedians Robin Williams, Chevy Chase, and Kirstie Alley.
The season premiere of Celebrity Ghost Stories is on Saturday, July 17 at 9pm and will feature stories on Michael Imperioli, Joan Collins, Donna D'Errico, and Corey Feldman. Other episodes for the month will have Tracey Gold, Alice Cooper, Fred Dryer, and Katherine Erbe on Saturday, July 24 and Billy Baldwin, Tracy Nelson, Tempestt Bledsoe, and Eric Balfour on Saturday, July 31.

IFC Acquires Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared; Final 2 Episodes of happy town on ABC.com
It's still the holiday weekend for most people, so we hope you're enjoying this three-day long weekend! Hope you have watched a TV marathon or two. If not, there are plenty of options today!
Continuing to build on its strategy of showcasing "slightly off" comedies that appeal to its young male audience, IFC (Independent Film Channel) announced it has acquired the complete series of Judd Apatow's Emmy®-winning high school comedy Freaks and Geeks (18 episodes) and college spinoff Undeclared (17 episodes) from Paramount Pictures Corporation. These two cult TV short-lived series helped launch the careers of Jay Baruchel, Jenna Fischer, James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel, among other young stars. Freaks and Geeks airs on IFC on Fridays at 11:00pm, et/pt, and encore on Mondays (so tonight!) at 11:00pm and Sundays at 10:00pm. Undeclared will debut on IFC this fall. A previously unaired episode of Undeclared will make its U.S. television debut on IFC.
Freaks and Geeks is set in the 1980s at McKinley High where there are two different groups of teenagers: the Freaks with cool and charismatic Daniel Desario (James Franco) and tomboy Lindsay Weir (Linda Cardellini, ER), and the Geeks with Lindsay's shy younger brother Sam (John Francis Daley, Bones), gentle Bill Haverchuck (Martin Starr), and self-proclaimed ladies' man Neal Schweiber (Samm Levine). The series was executive produced by Judd Apatow; series writers include Paul Feig (The Office) and series directors include Jake Kasdan. It was produced by Apatow Productions in association with DreamWorks Television and aired for one season on NBC (1999-2000) and also starred Seth Rogen and Jason Segel in supporting roles.
Undeclared paired creator and executive producer Apatow with directors such as Kasdan together again along with stars Seth Rogen and Jason Segel. The series, which was also produced by Apatow Productions in association with DreamWorks Television, aired on Fox for one season (2001-2002). The comedy series follows an eclectic group of college freshmen as they experience their first year at the University of North Eastern California (UNEC). College life is seen through the eyes of the new and improved Steven Karp (Jay Baruchel), who goes from scrawny high school nerd to potentially handsome college guy over the course of one summer. The series also features Jenna Fischer (The Office), Carla Gallo and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy).

The series was pulled from the Wednesday schedule after its June 16 airing due to low ratings. The two episodes are "Dallas Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and "Blame It On Rio Bravo." These will not air on TV, so it will be your only shot of watching it. I suggest you watch it if you were watching the show, so you have an ending because there is an actual ending to the show. Summer Week 5 Sitcom Ratings; Coming Week Preview

We will be back with our normal weekly report with the first four nights numbers and analysis in the fall, but we still will have our regular how the sitcoms did all summer long, along with a coming week preview! Tonight you can catch an all-new Sons of Tucson at 7pm on Fox followed by encores of Fox's animated comedies from 7:30-10 tonight. ABC airs repeats of America's Funniest Home Videos and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Then it will be an encore of Jimmy Kimmel Live's Twilight Saga: Total Eclipse of the Heart at 9pm, as Scoundrels is preempted and The Gates is a repeat. NBC will have a two-hour Dateline followed by Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular at 9 and then the NBC premiere of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. CBS has a new 60 Minutes at 7pm followed by repeats of I Get That a Lot & Cold Case and then at 10pm Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular.
Coming Week Preview (July 5-10):
For Monday, on ABC, it's an all-new night with new episodes of The Bachelorette from 8-10pm and True Beauty at 10pm. NBC will have a new two-hour Last Comic Standing from 9-11pm, with a new episode of drama Persons Unknown at 8pm. On Fox, they have a repeat of Lie to Me at 8pm followed by an all-new The Good Guys at 9pm. CBS and The CW are in repeats with their regular line-ups, which includes sitcoms on CBS.
On Tuesday, ABC will have all-new episode of the hilarious Wipeout, then an all-new episode of the high stakes game show Downfall and the season premiere of Primetime: Family Secrets at 10. NBC has a new Losing it with Jillian and a two-hour America's Got Talent from 9-11pm. Fox has an all-new two-hour Hell's Kitchen starting at 8pm. And once again CBS and The CW are in repeats.
On Wednesday, Fox has a two-hour So You Think You Can Dance. NBC has the return of game show Minute to Win It at 8, then a new America's Got Talent at 9pm followed by a repeat of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. ABC has repeats of the comedies and Castle Wednesday at 10pm, its new summer home. CBS will have repeats of How I Met Your Mother and Rules of Engagement followed by regular repeats, same goes true for The CW. TV Land will have the fourth episode of Hot in Cleveland at 10pm guest starring Huey Lewis and Amy Yasbeck.

Coming Week Preview (July 5-10):

Digital Digest: Matlock - The Fifth Season DVD Review (7/20)
Welcome to another edition of Digital Digest! Our normal Digital Digest blogger (skees53) will be gone and missed for the next few months, if you didn't know yet. As always, we have the latest news, upcoming releases for Tuesday, and our DVD review this week is of CBS DVD's Matlock - The Fifth Season. It's a light news week it seems I guess because of the 4th of July weekend, so glad you can make it.
DIGITAL NEWS
Looks like the summer doldrums have come because it was an uber slow week in terms of digital news. Maybe the 4th of July holiday has something to with that? Warner Home Video has sent out the press release and cover art for The Big Bang Theory - The Complete Third Season streeting Sept. 14. Pre-order it on both DVD ($44.98 MSRP)and Blu-ray ($54.97 MSRP). Meanwhile, Warner Home Video has also sent out a press release and an updated cover art for The Middle - Season 1 streeting on Aug. 31. Pre-order today!
The only other story of note was a TVShowsonDVD.com story on where's Season 4 of Boy Meets World. Lionsgate is re-releasing the first three seasons that Buena Vista released, but still nothing on season four. It's such a slow week, that is all we have. No exclusives or anything. Hopefully it picks up next week. We'll be here still when it does, but to make up for that we have a cool review of Matlock today!

It's time for a DVD review of Grandpa Simpson's favorite show! Yes, Matlock: The Fifth Season! The format of the show was similar to that of Perry Mason, with Matlock identifying the murderer and then confronting him or her in a dramatic courtroom scene near the end. One difference, however, was that whereas Mason usually exculpated his clients at a pretrial hearing, Matlock usually secured an acquittal at trial, from the jury. DVD Review: Matlock - The Fifth Season

Matlock: The Fifth Season (CBS, $49.99) is back on the docket for another 21 great episodes of the great courtroom and crime drama Matlock. While the show is often stereotyped in popular culture as being a show designed mainly to appeal to the elderly, it does have quite a strong draw among the less aged. In some ways, particularly when Don Knotts shows up for one of his periodic episodes, it feels almost like a continuation of his Andy Taylor role two decades earlier. Sure he's called Ben Matlock, but deep down inside he's still playing some version of the same character, and that's appealing. The show also stars Nancy Stafford, Clarence Gilyard, and Julie Sommars.
Two episodes in the fifth season take place in an unusual setting - Los Angeles. Early in the season – the season's double-length second episode – Ben travels out west to the City of Angels to try a case. Proving that no good deed goes unpunished, Ben first gets charged with Contempt of Court, then later is accused of murder after the judge who charged him turns up dead. Michelle and Conrad then fly out to Los Angles to help out. The episode originally aired and promoted on NBC as A Matlock Movie Mystery (hence, the double-length running time) before going under its normal title of "Nowhere to Turn."
Ben apparently didn't let a negative experience dissuade him from returning to the city in the season's finale. In the final episode for the show's next to last season on NBC, Ben is tricked by Julie into flying out west...where he then gets to meet a one-time movie queen, a favorite of Ben's, who is now a cosmetics mogul...that's on trial for killing her blackmailing ex-lover. Speaking of celebrity, if you watch the episode "The Madam," you get to see half the principal cast for the later series Walker, Texas Ranger. Clarence Gilyard, who of course was a regular on Matlock at the time, would later go on to play Travette, while the episode features an appearance by actor Noble Willingham, who would go on to play CD on the series. Also appearing this season in a recurring role is Andy's old sidekick from The Andy Griffith Show, Mr. Don Knotts! Don was always great no matter the show, but there's something about the pairing of Andy and Don that's just television gold. Other guest appearances this season include Amy Yasbeck (Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Wings), Mike Farrell (M*A*S*H), and Diana Muldaur (L.A. Law, Star Trek: The Next Generation).
With regards to edits: "The Secret, Part 2" runs THIRTY SEVEN MINUTES. That's 37, with a 3. There's NO way on the face of this earth that's in the same zip code as a proper runtime. Seriously, that's TEN minutes shorter than ANY other episode. Especially given that the show did air as two parts originally, *something* has been lopped off drastically. TEN minutes. And you can't just attribute it to being a part 2. "The Trail, Part 2" later in the set runs 46:34. While I'm sure NBC would have appreciated the extra advert slots, it's just ridiculous to think it's intact. CBS DVD's having put its "Some episodes may be edited" disclaimer here is like putting a disclaimer on a porcupine warning that it may be sharp and pointy.

It's a CBS DVD release, so don't expect too much time spent on the packaging or design sections. Listen, I know that these clear hard plastic packages have become the standard for TV DVD. Yes, I know that the packaging is being used not only by CBS, but by Fox, ABC/Buena Vista, and at least one or two other studios are releasing their stuff almost entirely in this format now. I don't care. My experiences with this packaging are forever colored by my early experiences with it. When every DVD set you receive for over a year in the package type is broken on receipt, you tend to have a low opinion. Does the package do a great job of storing six DVDs in a remarkably slim container? Absolutely. Am I worried that one small bit of plastic breaking could lead to half a dozen discs floating around the box? You bet. Box art itself is well-designed, with all the colors, and logos, and cast photos being complimentary to one another. I'm never a fan of a cast photo that's been Photoshopped together from individual photos, as is the case here, but it's really not that big of a deal.
Getting to what's ON the DVD? First of all, I really do have to hand it to the graphic design team, the two menus that DO exist on the set (Main Menu and a "Set Up" menu that toggles subtitles) are extremely well designed...though some sort of background music might be nice.
The video looks to be a tad cleaned up compared to its WGN America airings, but you aren't going to be blown away by eye-popping visuals. Audio too is rather sedate. Does the stereo track do a serviceable job? Yes. Is it going to knock your socks off? No. Chapter stops occur at the end of each act.
No special features to redeem the set. When you take into account the fact that one episode appears to be short by ten minutes, there are serious, serious flaws in the set. 37-and-change minutes is just NOT right. I don't care if it is the second part or night, NO TV show in 1991 ran that short. Heck, the only show in 2010 that runs that short is The Price is Right, which clocks in at 38 minutes or so per episode. There are only two series I've ever seen that featured a worse edit. WKRP in Cincinnati was edited abysmally top to bottom, and in addition there was a DVD set of Tracey Takes On (I believe it was the third and fourth seasons) which featured episodes sometimes cut by up to half. Those two? Definitely worse. But few DVD sets can claim to have an episode with a full 25% missing, and this set can claim just that. If you care about edited episodes, you've probably already canceled your order and I'm sorry to hear that. The show is immensely enjoyable, but a 25% edit to an episode is just a tough pill to swallow. If you love the show, by all means buy it, but I can't in good conscience recommend a set with one episode cut so substantially. Especially since no episode like this was edited on the first four sets.

2010 4th of July Weekend TV Marathons; NBC Pulls Love Bites from Fall 2010; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of July 5, 2010)
We have now started the 4th of July weekend! And of course we are known for letting you know what marathons are airing on TV on holidays and we will do the same for this 4th of July weekend as well! Most of the marathons are on Sunday (July 4) and Monday (July 5), but the fun starts TODAY on some networks!
Among the marathons we have already mentioned include The A-Team on Centric on July 4, Syfy's The Greatest American Hero marathon on July 4, Hallmark's The Golden Girls marathon on July 5, ION's Without a Trace launch marathon on July 5, TV Land's Bewitched marathon from 8am-5pm on July 5, and Martin's marathon on TV One on July 5.

NBC and Donald Trump want to put America back to work -- and after a long wait, the boardroom will be open again for candidates who have lost their jobs as the network showcases an updated version of the popular original alternative series The Apprentice, with Trump returning to preside.
Love Bites, the hour-long romantic comedy anthology series that was previously scheduled for Thursdays at 10:00 p.m. ET beginning this Fall, will premiere later during the 2010-11 season. Why the delay? There are a lot of production issues going around and it wouldn't be ready for September.

Meanwhile, we have a change to NBC's fall 2010 schedule. NBC will debut the newly revised edition of its previously announced The Apprentice series on Thursdays at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT beginning this Fall instead of new series Love Bites starring Becki Newton.
NBC and Donald Trump want to put America back to work -- and after a long wait, the boardroom will be open again for candidates who have lost their jobs as the network showcases an updated version of the popular original alternative series The Apprentice, with Trump returning to preside.
Love Bites, the hour-long romantic comedy anthology series that was previously scheduled for Thursdays at 10:00 p.m. ET beginning this Fall, will premiere later during the 2010-11 season. Why the delay? There are a lot of production issues going around and it wouldn't be ready for September.

TV Land and Nick at Nite Doing Well in Ratings; Network Notes Includes CW Premiere Dates and CBS New Midseason Sitcom
Buoyed by hit acquisitions and the premiere of the hugely successful Hot in Cleveland, TV Land scored impressive, double-digit gains in primetime for second quarter 2010, according to The Nielsen Company (March 29-June 27). Additionally, TV Land scored significant increases for the month of June as the highest-rated and most-watched month in primetime since January 2008.
The month of June was very successful for TV Land in primetime as the network posted a 0.4 rating and 393,000 viewers among Adults 25-54, up 37% in 25-54 rating and 36% in viewers 25-54. The network attracted an average of 904,000 total viewers for the month. Among Women 25-54, TV Land scored a 0.4 rating and 232,000 viewers up 43% in W25-54 rating and 45% in viewers W25-54. The first two episodes of the fiery hit Hot in Cleveland propelled TV Land to its highest-rated and most-watched month in prime since January 2008 with a 2.3 rating and 2.4 million among A25-54 viewers. The sitcom is averaging over 5 million total viewers and is also a smash with Women 25-54, pacing at a 2.9 rating and 1.6 million viewers.
For the quarter in primetime, TV Land posted a 0.3 rating and 360,000 viewers among its target demo of Adults 25-54, up 21% in both 25-54 rating and viewers 25-54 over a year ago. Among Women 25-54, TV Land scored a 0.4 rating and 210,000 viewers, up double-digit gains of 34% in W25-54 rating and 35% in viewers W25-54 over last year. In addition to the huge premiere of Hot in Cleveland in June, regularly scheduled programming such as Everybody Loves Raymond and Roseanne remained strong performers among Adults 25-54 for the quarter with Raymond posting a 0.4 rating and 415,000 viewers and Roseanne scoring a 0.3 rating and 341,000 viewers for that demo. Additionally, the original series How'd You Get So Rich? starring Joan Rivers also performed well with a 0.3 rating and 341,000 viewers among A25-54.
Nickelodeon closes the quarter with its biggest second quarter performance ever with total viewers in the network's history and its 61st straight quarter as the top basic cable network with kids 2-11 and total viewers - the longest run of its kind. Nick also claims basic cable's top spot in total day with kids 2-11 and total viewers for 2Q10. According to Nielsen Media Research (3/29/10-6/27/10), Nickelodeon averaged 2.2 million total viewers; a 3.4 rating and 1.2 million K2-11; a 3.0 rating and 649,000 viewers K6-11; and 2.3 rating and 491,000 viewers T9-14 for the quarter.
Also, Nick at Nite, TeenNick, Nicktoons and Nick Jr. boast their most-watched second quarter performances ever. Nick at Nite drew its most-watched second quarter ever with total viewers (1.7 million total viewers) and finished 2Q10 as the top cable network among W18-49 (0.7 rating and 409,000 viewers).
The CW Network has set its fall premiere schedule, launching its fifth broadcast season with 10 hours of original programming of returning favorites and two new series. The season will launch all outside of premiere week, beginning on Sept. 8 with America's Next Top Model 15 and the series premiere of drama Hellcats. The next night (Sept. 9) will see the return of The Vampire Diaries and new drama Nikita. On Monday, Sept. 13, 90210 moves to its new night at 8pm, followed by the season premiere of Gossip Girl. If I were The CW, I would have had a special season premiere of 90210 on Thursday, Sept. 2 (get it? 9/02/10). Anyway, One Tree Hill launches its eighth season on a new night on Tuesday, Sept. 14, followed by the season premiere of Life UneXpected. And finally 10 days later, Friday dramas Smallville and Supernatural launch their new seasons on Friday, Sept. 24. The Friday dramas are the only CW series launching in the TV premiere week (Sept. 20-26), as the other CW series are launching between Sept. 8-14.
CBS has officially made the pick-up of sitcom Mad Love for mid-season. CBS has made some casting changes bringing on Sarah Chalke ([scrubs]) and Judy Greer (Miss Guided) to replace Minka Kelly and Lizzy Caplan respectively.
The comedy Mad Love, starring Jason Biggs, Sarah Chalke, Judy Greer and Tyler Labine, has been ordered by CBS for mid-season. Mad Love is about a quartet of single friends in New York City - two who are falling in love and two who despise each other... at least for now.
Matt Tarses and Jamie Tarses are the executive producers for Sony Pictures Entertainment in association with CBS Television Studios. Pamela Fryman directed the pilot.
Meanwhile, NBC is making some summer schedule changes...again. Rookie summer drama Persons Unknown will get one more Monday airing on July 5, then it will be moved to Saturdays at 8pm starting July 17. More repeats of America's Got Talent will be added, airing Mondays at 8pm and Sundays at 9pm. This is in addition to its regular Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9 slots. Saturday repeats will be removed after this week (July 3). Also, the Thursday comedy block has not been repeating well, so Thursdays will have Law & Order: SVU repeats now at 10pm (in addition to the regular Wednesday at 10pm repeats) starting July 15. 8-10pm will now be Community, 30 Rock, The Office and Parks & Recreation.
