Netflix Announces God's Favorite Idiot Release Date; TV Stars Join Freeform's Cruel Summer Season 2

God's Favorite Idiot - Ben Falcone and Melissa McCarthy

God's Favorite Idiot, a new Netflix comedy series, from creator Ben Falcone now has a premiere date! The 8 episode series premieres Wednesday, June 15, 2022. Clark Thompson (Ben Falcone) is a mid-level tech support employee, who takes saunas with his dad, Gene (Kevin Dunn), pines after his co-worker Amily (Melissa McCarthy), and loves his cats. When he starts to glow, he begins to realize this isn't an average day at the office and God has bigger plans for him. Clark can't save mankind by himself, he must gather his flock of mismatched co-workers, his longtime crush Amily and angelic allies to outwit Satan herself (Leslie Bibb). Together, they're just a bunch of average humans coming together for the greater good because, after all, you can't save the world alone. The series stars Ben Falcone, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Bibb, Kevin Dunn, Usman Ally, Steve Mallory, Chris Sandiford, Ana Scotney, and Yanic Truesdale.

Cruel Summer

Freeform's Cruel Summer returns as an anthology with a fresh mystery and cast (including three stars from Private Practice and a Goldbergs star) when its highly anticipated second season premieres later this year. Executive produced by Emmy(R) Award nominee Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple (The Sinner, Candy) through Iron Ocean Productions and from studio eOne, the first season of Cruel Summer, starring Oliva Holt and Chiara Aurelia, was a critical and ratings smash, making it Freeform's most-watched series in network history. Set in an idyllic waterfront town in the Pacific Northwest, the next chapter of Cruel Summer follows the rise and fall of an intense teenage friendship. Approaching the story from three different timelines surrounding Y2K, the season twists and turns as it tracks the early friendship between Megan, Isabella and Megan's best friend Luke, the love triangle that blossomed, and the mystery that would impact all of their lives going forward.

Sadie Stanley (The Goldbergs) will star as Megan Landry, a computer coder and honor student from a blue-collar family. Once Megan meets Isabella, she begins to live in the moment and embrace her true self. When events take a tragic turn, her long-held dreams are dashed, and she is left wondering who she can trust. Eloise Payet portrays the alluring and enigmatic Isabella, the daughter of foreign diplomats, who is spending a year as an exchange student with the Landry family. She quickly shakes up life in this small town, but her charm can't hide the truth about her past or the real reason she came to live with the Landrys forever.

Griffin Gluck (Locke & Key, Private Practice) plays Luke Chambers, Megan's lifelong best friend from a prominent family. Over time, Luke finds himself at a crossroads as he tries to establish his own place in the world, separate from the expectations of his powerful father. KaDee Strickland (Private Practice) stars as Debbie, Megan's hardworking single mom who thinks hosting Isabella will open Megan's eyes to a bigger world than their small town. Lisa Yamada (Little Fires Everywhere) is Parker, a popular musician who becomes more cynical as the world takes a dark turn around her. Sean Blakemore (Greenleaf) will play Sheriff Myer, an old-fashioned law-and-order type, under pressure to solve the first major crime in Chatham. Paul Adelstein (True Story) will recur as Steve Chambers, Luke's high-profile dad, whose influence in town is far-reaching.

Digital Digest: Cagney & Lacey Release Date; Long-Term Night Court Plans; Castle - The Complete Fourth Season DVD Review; Private Practice - The Complete Fifth Season DVD Review

Welcome to Digital Digest! We're all getting ready for the fall season, which goes into full gear in the upcoming weeks, but the "season" never ends or begins on DVDs and streaming video. This week, we've got reviews of Castle - The Complete Fourth Season and Private Practice - The Complete Fifth Season. Let's get going!

DIGITAL NEWS

VEI has been very clear for the past year that Cagney & Lacey would not only be completed on DVD, but we'll even see the entire series, in one collection. The nagging question has been exactly when that will happen, but if this preorder listing for Cagney & Lacey - The Complete Series on amazon.ca is correct, it will be coming on November 13... just a little over two months from now! It is important to note that this set appears to be the general release, not the special edition which will contain the special features (including the much different first season, which often isn't even considered part of the true series). We hope to have a review of this set (if we do, it will most likely be the general release) when the time comes.

Last week, a Night Court fan on Facebook asked Warner Archive about whether or not they planned to release the next season of the series (which would be season seven) on DVD. The short answer to this question was yes, but the longer and more detailed answer is certain to please fans of the series. In their own words, "Yep, already working on it. Hoping to have the whole series out within the next year or so." So not only is the next season of Night Court in the works, but it sounds as if the long term plan is to get the remainder of the series out within a year! That isn't too bad for a series which once seemed to be stalled at the first season. We'll keep you updated when we have dates to fill in for these releases. I'm hoping for at least one by the end of this year, but we'll take them when we can get them!

The TV Land series Hot in Cleveland is moving ahead on DVD on November 27 with Hot in Cleveland - Season Three. The three-disc set comes at a $29.98 MSRP. And, by the way, it is worth noting that for fans north of the border, a Canadian version of this set will likely come out later by eOne, the studio handling Canadian releases for the series.

November 27 will also bring some legal drama to DVD, with the release of Perry Mason - Season 8, Volume 1. This release will push the series yet another step closer to completion, with only three more volumes to go after this. By the way, we're about 100% positive that the studio listed on the amazon.com listing is incorrect... it will not be released by Comedy Central DVD.

One week later, on December 4, Comedy Central... err, CBS... will be releasing Mannix - The Eighth and Final Season. As the title suggest, this will break the classic drama to a close on DVD. It isn't available to pre-order just yet.

Finally, Shout! Factory provided a little surprise this week as a pre-order of Quincy, M.E. - Season 4. The six-disc set will be released on December 18, just in time for Christmas.

UPCOMING WEEK PREVIEW

Tuesday (September 11) brings the 2011-2012 seasons of many popular series to DVD, including The Big Bang Theory - The Complete Fifth Season (DVD, DVD/Blu-ray/Ultraviolet), 30 Rock - Season Six, and Up All Night - Season One. For those who like a little drama, ABC has Private Practice - The Complete Fifth Season and Castle - The Complete Fourth Season (both reviews today in Digital Digest). Meanwhile, Shout! finishes up a hit detective series from the past with Kojak - Season Five (review).

BLOG FEATURE REVIEW

Blog Feature Review: Castle - The Complete Fourth Season (ABC, $45.99)
by Pavan

Television's most unlikely crime-fighting team is back and their relationship is stronger than ever! Prepare for a season full of suspense where lines are drawn, sides are chosen and careers are put on the line as Castle tries to protect Beckett following her near death encounter. Castle's relationship with Beckett radically changes during the season, leading to a final confrontation with a mysterious man who holds all the answers that Beckett has been searching for since the night her mother was murdered. Relive all 23 episodes from the 4th season on this 5-disc set packed with bonus features!
The series will return to its Mondays at 10PM timeslot on ABC this coming season following Dancing with the Stars once again. The series stars Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle, Stana Katic as Detective Kate Beckett, Jon Huertas as Detective Javier Esposito, Seamus Dever as Detective Kevin Ryan, Tamala Jones as Medical Examiner Dr. Lanie Parish, Penny Johnson Jerald as Captain Victoria Gates, Molly Quinn as Alexis Castle, and Susan Sullivan as Martha Rodgers. Among the recurring stars are Arye Gross as Medical Examiner Dr. Sidney Perlmutter, Scott Paulin as Jim Becket, Juliana Dever as Jenny, Geoff Pierson as Mr. Smith and Victor Webster as Dr. Josh Davidson. Among the guests this year are Adam Baldwin, François Chau, Fredric Lehne, Richard Burgi, Deborah Van Valkenburgh, Jaime Ray Newman, Derek Webster, Rebecca Field, Mark Pellegrino, Jennifer Beals, Sarah Jane Morris, Bruce Gray, Christine Woods, Brett Tucker, Charles Shaughnessy, and Tahmoh Penikett.

This fourth season was great and the relationship between Castle and Beckett is up and down but is rewarding. As I keep saying, I don't like most crime shows of today, but this one is a throwback to the ones of the past and focuses on characters than more about the case. I like that! And the back and forth banter between Castle and Beckett is STILL sexy and is heating up! As far as memorable episodes, we have the season premiere "Rise," where after undergoing extensive surgery, Beckett takes three months to recuperate before returning to the NYPD, with Castle in tow she begins searching for her would-be assassin and the late Captain Montgomery is replaced by Captain Victoria "Iron" Gates, who does not approve of Castle's presence. In "Kick the Ballistics," Castle and Beckett investigate the murder of a young woman which was committed using Det. Ryan's old service weapon – the one that was stolen by the serial killer, 3XK. In "Cops & Robbers," Martha and Castle are held hostage by bank robbers dressed in hospital scrubs who are named after classic TV characters, while Beckett's rescue efforts are hindered by a strict hostage negotiator and Alexis faces problems in her relationship with Ashley. In "Kill Shot," the team searches for a sniper who is terrorizing New York, while Beckett tries to hide her worsening PTSD from Castle and the detectives.

In "Till Death Do Us Part," when Castle and Beckett investigate the death of a ladies' man, dark secrets are revealed about Ryan's bride. In the classic episode "The Blue Butterfly," Castle attempts to solve a crime using a diary written in the 1940s and every time he reads it he flashes back to the 1940s, with the principal characters being imagined as people described in the diary. In the first of 2-part episode, "Pandora," Castle and Beckett find out that the killer they are pursuing is part of an international conspiracy, while Alexis starts a new internship assisting Lanie in the Medical Examiner's Office. In the conclusion, "Linchpin," Castle and Beckett realize what the linchpin is and in their attempts to prevent a war from breaking out, they are betrayed by someone they thought they could trust, also over the course of the investigation, Castle begins to learn more about his father. In "A Dance with Death," Castle and Beckett take the case of a troubled celebrity who was murdered moments before she was due to appear as a contestant on a popular dancing competition. In "Headhunters," feeling that he is no longer able to work with Beckett, Castle finds a new partner in Detective Ethan Slaughter (Adam Baldwin), as the two attempt to prevent a gang war from taking over New York, Slaughter's questionable and often violent methods place Castle's life in danger. In the must-see season finale, "Always," when Castle and Beckett attend the murder of a reformed gang member, they find evidence that links him to Beckett's shooting and the theft of documents from Roy Montomgery's home and the episode concludes with the mystery man protecting Kate, identified as Mr. Smith, being threatened by Maddox to give up the information he is using to blackmail them.

Packaging has a thin outer box that you can remove from the top or bottom to get to the case inside, just like the previous sets. Both the thin outer box and case have the same artwork for both the front and back. The cover has a nice (and sexy) shot of Castle and Beckett as her hand is over his lips (the "shhh" sign). The show logo is present in white lettering towards the bottom. The tagline "Partners. In crime" appears above the logo. The back has a tan background with information on the set, four episodic screen shots from episodes and also a SEXY photo of Castle & Beckett with handcuffs (Beckett in a gold dress! wow!). There is also a box detailing the bonus features with technical specifications also.
Opening the case, on the left side we see some inserts which includes a booklet for other ABC DVDs and also a page on the upcoming Castle book Frozen Heat. We also have an insert on the upcoming graphic novel Storm Season and also $2.00 off of on Castle coffee blends! Morning is murder! Back to the case, on both the left and right panels we have a nice cast photo (Beckett in a nice tanish tank top!) with a disc-by-disc breakdown of episode titles. The discs are on plastic holders, like the previous set, that you can flip a page in a book. The first plastic holder holds disc one on the front side and disc two on the back side. The second plastic holds disc three on the front side and disc four on the back side. Disc five is on the right panel itself. Disc artwork is very nice and has that nice tan background, matching the set's color scheme. Disc one has episodes 1-5 with artwork of Richard Castle. Disc two has episodes 6-10 and has artwork of Kate Beckett (in black leather, Jesus!). Disc three has episodes 11-15 and has artwork of Ryan & Esposito. Disc four has episodes 16-20 and has artwork of Captain Gates & Lanie. And disc five has episodes 21-23 plus the bulk of the bonus features and has artwork of Martha & Alexis. This style is similar to the previous set.

The menu screen starts in the style of the opening title from the series with the theme music in the background, then we get to the main menu where we see moving video images with the closing theme playing in the background, similar to the previous sets. The options on the main menu are Play All, Episode Selection, Set Up, Bonus Features, and Sneak Peeks. But before the main menu screen comes on disc one, we get some auto sneak peeks: ABC TV on DVD summer, ABC TV on DVD fall, and Frankenweenie. Sneak Peeks option is only found on disc five on the main menu and has a preview of Roger Rabbit 25th anniversary DVD. This also auto plays before the main menu on disc five. Set Up section has the option of subtitles in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese and how you can register your DVD. The Episodes option gives us the episode number, title and a screenshot. Bonus Features option has all the extras listed and this is on every disc once again, rather than just disc five. All of the sub-menus have different background music from the show. Catchy!

The video is digitally mastered and is in widescreen and looks very good! The audio is great and sounds very good, as it is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Both the audio and video are similar to the previous sets. This is from 2011-2012, so it had better be good. There is nothing to complain at all here...it is perfect! Perfection here. There are about 7 chapter stops per episode. We get to hear the closing theme as well, whistles and all! All of the "previously on Castle" teasers that were used in a few episodes are intact. Not much to report here, but that is a good thing since this part of the DVDs are always perfect. I wish we had a Blu-ray version of this show and that would be beyond perfection! Imagine watching Stana Katic in Blu-ray (or Nathan Fillion for you females out there)!

Moving on the bonus features. We get audio commentaries again, for the second straight set. We also have audio commentary for the season premiere "Rise" from executive producer Rob Bowman, and stars Jon Huertas, Seamus Dever & Tamala Jones. This is very informative and fun as these are a fun group of people. On to disc two, we have an audio commentary on the fun episode "Handcuffed" from showrunner Andrew Marlowe, writer Terri Miller, and stars Nathan Fillion & Stana Katic! These guys are just as fun as the guys from the other audio commentary! For disc three, we have a deleted scene from the episode "Dial M for Mayor" (1:05). We also have audio commentary on the classic episode "The Blue Butterfly." This was the 1940s style episode and commenting are writer Terence Paul Winker, costume designer Luke Reichle, and stars Susan Sullivan, Tamala Jones & Molly C. Quinn. It's great to see them getting nearly every main series star on these commentaries! Disc four has two more deleted scenes: "Linchpin" (2:00) and "A Dance with Death" (0:42).

On to disc five, where the bulk of the extras are! We have deleted scenes for two episodes: "Headhunters" (0:17) and "Always" (1:02, 0:31, 0:25, 0:43). Nice to see four different deleted scenes from the season finale! Onto the main features, we have a cool radio series featurette titled "Nathan & Friends: Castle Goes Radio." We have Nathan and his friends performing the show Thrilling Adventure Hour before a live audience in a show broadcast in the style of an old-time radio drama. Very cool! First up for this we have "Making the Show" (11:42). Molly C. Quinn hosts and narrates this special on the radio show. We have interviews with Nathan Fillion, Ben Blacker, Ben Acker, Rick Sickler (Castle AD), Ruby Stillwater (Castle 2nd AD), Marc Evan Jackson and Jenny Wade. We also see Busy Philipps and David Anders on stage! There are two episodes in full for you to watch! "Sparks Nevada: Marshal on Mars" (21:15) and Cactoid Jim: King of the Martian Frontier (21:41). And if you click on the coffee cup, we get A Word From WorkJuice Coffee (4:30).

Next we have "Submerged: An In-Depth Look At Stunts" (17:32). We are taken to the heart-stopping car stunt from this season's two-part episode! Interviewed are Andrew Marlowe, Nathan Fillion, Rob Bowman, Dennis Madalone (stunt coordinator), Rich Sickler (first AD), Stana Katic, Bob Calvert (special effects coordinator), Barry K. Thomas (first AD), Bryan Spicer (director), Seamus Dever, Jon Huertas, Marc Khan (producer), Jon Howard (visual effects producer), and Robert Duncan (composer). Up next we have "Bowman, Bowman & Castle" (10:24). On this featurette, we are taken a behind the scenes look from the episode "The Blue Butterfly" where Rob Bowman called on his father Chuck Bowman to direct! Interviewed are Andrew Marlowe, Nathan Fillion, Rob Bowman, Mr. Chuck Bowman, Seamus Dever, Stana Katic, Jon Huertas, and Stephen Bowman (post production coordinator). Bowman's are wild like deuces! Finally, we have some "Bloopers" (4:22)...yes all the hilarious flubs and outtakes! See all the goofs and play on the set, as we get a bit more bloopers this time!

Another wonderful season and set! Season 4 is a pivotal season in the relationship between Castle and Beckett. I recommend this series and set once again...it is an ABC Studios DVD, so it is good and filled with special features. This series is really cooking, from start to finish. Season two was when it started to break out, and it continues and gets better in seasons three and four! This DVD is awesome as we get of course all 23 great episodes from the fourth season, great packaging, and great extras. The DVD is coming out on Sept. 11, just in time for the fifth season premiere on Sept. 24 on ABC. ABC has been re-airing the show this summer on Saturdays before moving back to Mondays in late August. So I hope you saw them all, if not, for sure get this DVD. And if you've never watched an episode, the series is coming to syndication this Fall! On TNT Wednesdays beginning Sept. 26 and in weekend syndication in broadcast syndication beginning the weekend of Sept. 29-30, so check your local listings for time and station! Everyone needs to be watching this show and I think it will get even better this season as we leave off on the happy moment from the fourth season finale. That was one of the the best season finales on TV last season, as this show always delivers. The electrifying chemistry between Fillion and Katic continues, and you all need to buy the set by clicking below to see it for yourself! Buy the DVD or Ryan and Esposito will arrest you for not doing so!

BLOG FEATURE REVIEW

Blog Feature Review: Private Practice - The Complete Fifth Season (ABC, $39.99)
by Pavan

From the creators of Grey's Anatomy comes the fifth season of ABC's sexy, medical drama, Private Practice. This season, Addison and her friends at the practice are faced with new challenges as unexpected people enter and complicate their lives. From a sexy new doctor to an illegitimate son, the lives and loves of these doctors are put to the test. Relive all the excitement, tragedies, and triumphs in this 5-disc collection featuring all 22 episodes!

The series will return to its new Tuesday at 10PM timeslot on ABC this coming season, starting Sept. 25. It moved onto that night late last season and did well so ABC will stick with it there. The series stars Kate Walsh as Dr. Addison Forbes Montgomery (Neonatal Surgery/Obstetrics & Gynecology), Tim Daly as Dr. Pete Wilder (Alternative Medicine), Paul Adelstein as Dr. Cooper Freedman (Pediatrics), KaDee Strickland as Dr. Charlotte King (Urology & Sexology, Chief of Staff at the nearby hospital), Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd (Neurosurgery), Brian Benben as Dr. Sheldon Wallace (Psychiatry), Taye Diggs as Dr. Sam Bennett (Internal Medicine/Cardiothoracic Surgery), with Amy Brenneman as Dr. Violet Turner (Psychiatry) and Benjamin Bratt as Dr. Jake Reilly (Obstetrics and Gynecology/Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
Among the recurring stars are AJ Langer as Erica Warner, Griffin Gluck as Mason Warner, Anika Noni Rose as Corinne, Wes Brown as Ryan, Stephen Amell as Scott, and Mary Chris Wall as Ellen Weston. Among the special guests this year are Patrick Dempsey, Chyler Leigh, Patrick Fabian, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Cynthia Stevenson, and Rachel G. Fox.

This fifth season was once again excellent and filled with lots of drama. Perhaps the best episode of the series is in this season with "Who We Are" as I think it is as good as season four's "Did You Hear What Happened To Charlotte King." The season was very well written once again, but that episode and story arc stands out. The sixth season premieres on Sept. 25 and we cannot wait for that. Anyway, as for season five, some memorable episodes include the season premiere, "God Laughs," where Sam, Cooper, Charlotte and Amelia team up to save the life of their friend Pete after he suffers a heart attack, while Violet, who was in the middle of leaving Pete and Los Angeles, is nowhere to be found, also Addison's desire to have a baby leads her to see Jake Reilly, her recent mystery man, in a most surprising place and Sheldon tries to help Amelia in her battle with alcohol. In "Deal With It," Jake enlists Addison to help a 20-year old, without a uterus, have a baby of her own and just as Cooper and Charlotte make amends, an old fling of Cooper's shows up at the practice with her 8-year old son, Mason. In "Remember Me," Cooper receives the surprise of his life when Erica, a woman from his past, informs him that her 8-year old son is his, but Charlotte insists on a paternity test, over Erica's protests. In the classic episode "Who We Are," the doctors at Seaside Wellness decide that Amelia is spiraling downhill, and they want to save her, so they host an intervention so they can help, but things don't go as planned when Amelia's boyfriend walks in and she storms out, high on Oxi, that Addison gave her so she would stay for the intervention and at the end of the episode, Amelia and her boyfriend, Ryan, decide to go to rehab together, get clean, and then get married...but they want to first finish off the drugs she has left. In "Too Much," Sam finds his estranged sister, Corinne, in jail, heavily medicated and near-catatonic, and brings her to Sheldon for help, while Erica begins secret treatments for her cancer and refuses to let Cooper and Charlotte tell Mason, while Cooper, Pete and Addison treat the baby of a drug addict and things between Violet and Scott continue to heat up in the bedroom.

In a crossover episode with Grey's Anatomy, "You Break My Heart," Cooper and Charlotte take Erica to Seattle Grace to meet with Derek (Special Guest Star Patrick Dempsey), Lexie (Special Guest Star Chyler Leigh) and Amelia regarding a very risky surgery. In "The Letting Go," Erica's cancer has spread, and she must face the prospect of finally saying good-bye to Mason, while Amelia decides to tell Addison the news about her pregnancy, while Sheldon promises to "be there" for her. In "It Was Inevitable," Charlotte and Cooper try to help Mason come to terms with Erica's rapidly deteriorating condition, while Pete and Violet discover they still have feelings for each other and Addison tries to help Amelia embrace motherhood, while a patient chooses Addison to be the adoptive mother of her son. In "Drifting Back," when a patient's father and partner can't agree on his health care, Pete makes a decision, while Jake suspects Amelia is being tempted to substance abuse, and Addison and Sam have difficulty defining their relationship. On the season finale, "Gone, Baby, Gone," the Seaside doctors go to Amelia's side as she begins labor, while Pete and Violet realize how they feel about each other and Addison must make a decision.

The episodes run usually close to 43 minutes, unedited of course with all the great music intact. There are about 7 chapter stops per episode. View the episode runtimes:

Like the last few seasons, packaging has an outer box that you can remove from the top or bottom then you'll see the keep case inside. For seasons one and two, we had a digipak, but ABC Studios changed it to a keep case starting with season three. Both the outer box and keep case have the same cover, a cast photo of them standing (some are sitting) in front of a beach sign. The show logo is on the top in white wording in a orange background. The back of the box and keep case has that orange background with information on the set and has head shots that feature all nine of our stars. There is also a section detailing the bonus features box with technical specifications also. Opening the case, on the left panel there is an insert and on the left and right panels itself we have a disc-by-disc breakdown with episode titles and bonus features and nice episodic photos. As for that insert, they are for other ABC Studios products coming on DVD. We have two little plastic holders, that we can flip like a page on a book. The first holder holds disc one in the front, and disc two in the back. The second holder holds disc three in the front, and disc four in the back. Disc five is on the right panel itself. Each disc matches the set's color scheme, that orange background with a yellow background that has nice character artwork. Disc one has episodes 1-5 with artwork of Addison & Sam. Disc two has episodes 6-10 and has artwork of Charlotte & Cooper. Disc three has episodes 11-14 and has artwork of Violet & Pete. Disc four has episodes 15-18 and has artwork of Sheldon & Amelia. Disc five has episodes 19-22 plus bonus features and has artwork of Jake.

The menu screen has clips in the background with the closing music from the series playing in the background audio wise, similar to previous sets. The options on the main menu are Play All, Episode Selection, Set Up, Bonus Features (disc five), and Sneak Peeks (disc five). But before the main menu screen comes on disc one, we get some auto sneak peeks: ABC on DVD,Castle Season 4 and Frankenweenie. Sneak Peeks option is only found on disc five on the main menu and has previews of more ABC TV on DVD, and Roger Rabbit 25th anniversary DVD. Set Up section has the option of subtitles in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese or Thai and how you can register your DVD. The Episodes option gives us the episode number, title and a screenshot. Bonus Features option is only on disc five and it has all the extras listed. All of the sub-menus have different background music once again. Consistent with other releases, but that is good!

The video is digitally mastered and is in widescreen and looks very good! The audio is great and sounds very good, as it is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. This is from the 2011-12 season, so it had better be good and it is. Crystal clear. Caterina Scorsone did a crossover episode on Grey's Anatomy but you'll have to get that DVD to see that episode ("Have You Seen Me Lately?").

Moving on the bonus features. All of the extras are on disc five again! We have a featurette titled "Practice of Parenthood" (12:37). This is a very good extra that gives an in-depth look at the addition of children to the series this season, the different kinds of family the show explores, and now being a parent affects the cast both as actors and in their personal lives. Interviewed are Shonda Rhimes & Betsy Beeers (showrunners), KaDee Strickland, Benjamin Bratt, Paul Adelstein, Caterina Scorsone, Kate Walsh and Amy Brenneman.
Then we have "Deleted Scenes" listed with episode titles so you know where they are from! Once again, we do NOT have optional audio commentary on these deleted scenes from Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers like we did on season two. Too bad. If my counting skills are correct, we have about 12 deleted scenes, down one from the previous DVD. "Breaking the Rules" (0:58), "Step One" (1:19 and 1:33), "Who We Are" (1:10), "The Breaking Point" (0:53), "The Time Has Come" (0:37), "Andromeda" (1:11), "It Was Inevitable" (0:34), "And Then There Was One" (1:16), "Drifting Back" (0:46) and "Gone, Baby, Gone" (0:56 and 1:58). Finally, we have some "Bloopers" (3:46)...yes, always great to see bloopers! See all the goofs and play on the set! The timing is up just two minutes from the last set, so that is cool! Wish we had more extra, but this is still good.

Once again, I recommend this series and set...it is an ABC Studios DVD, so it is good and filled with special features. We have the same amount of extras as last time, I think. Not as much as like the season two set, but still good. The packaging is good and the overlapping discs are not present once again. This season was great and it had one of the series' best episode to date I think. If you haven't see that episode, you really should. It is a nice arc that started before this episode and continues, so you'll want to know what happens to Amelia next. Also the Mason and Erica story is great. And tune in for sure on Sept. 25 for the sixth season premiere, but you need to refresh yourself, catch up with these 22 season five episodes first! Mason probably lost her mother, but that boy is very wise...and you should be wise too and buy this set!

Who to Follow: Mindy Kaling (Twitter), star of Fox's The Mindy Project (premieres September 25)
Claim to Fame: Co-executive producer, writer, and actress in the role Kelly Kapoor in the NBC series The Office
Tweets/Status Topics: Right now, Kaling has been talking about a lot of the behind-the-scenes happenings on her new series (which is expected), but in the past, Kaling's Twitter feed has been a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes happenings on The Office. She also gives glimpses into her personal life and plenty of opinions on the happenings in pop-culture, and her Twitter feed seems to show a side of her which is much like the character she played on The Office (and from what I've seen in the pilot episode even The Mindy Project, which you can watch right now for free if you subscribe to Amazon Prime). And if you read deep into her Tweets, you'd really think that Whole Foods might want to recruit her as a spokeswoman for an ad campaign, because she has this unnatural obsession with the natural food store.

Nickelodeon, in partnership with Televisa, has ordered 80 episodes of a groundbreaking, original one-hour U.S. adaptation of the popular Mexican telenovela, Reach for a Star (Alcanzar una Estrella) for Nick at Nite. The first telenovela ever adapted for the U.S. audience, Reach for a Star is a single-camera, daily series following a teenage girl whose life changes completely when she becomes a star and wins the love of her teen idol. Reach for a Star will be produced in association with Sony Pictures Television and is set to premiere later this year on Nickelodeon's nighttime block for families--Nick at Nite. Production begins in March in Los Angeles, CA.
Reach for a Star follows Nickelodeon's success with its live-action serialized series, House of Anubis and Degrassi. Nickelodeon has also experienced tremendous success with the format in Europe and Latin America. The Reach for a Star series is an adaptation of the hit Mexican telenovela, Alcanzar una Estrella, first broadcast on Canal de las Estrellas and Univision in 1990. The success of the series led to a film and sequel telenovela starring Latin American pop sensations, Ricky Martin and Sasha Sokol. Reach for a Star is about a smart, shy and independent high school senior, Loren, who has ambitions of being a songwriter and secretly sends her song lyrics to her celebrity crush, rock superstar Eddie Wild. Loren's wildest dreams come true when she not only wins a songwriting competition sponsored by Eddie, but strikes up a friendship with her idol. Eddie sees beyond Loren's potential as a songwriter and gives her a first break as a singer, and when the truth about his less-than-faithful girlfriend Chloe is revealed, Eddie and Loren's friendship blossoms. The series will be co-executive produced by six-time Emmy Award-winner Jill Farren Phelps (General Hospital, One Life to Live) and Hisham Abed (The Hills and The City). Josh Griffith (Young and the Restless, As the World Turns) will serve as head writer.
The original series is likely going to be paired with Nick at Nite staple George Lopez, which airs every night at 9:00pm & 9:30pm. Stay with us for a premiere date for Reach for a Star and timeslot details. Remember Nick at Nite also has a pilot order for a sitcom starring Scott Baio, should that go to series. So Nick at Nite is ramping it up in originals now!

TCA Winter 2011 Press Tour: ABC; First Ever Comedy Awards on Comedy Central

Today at the TCA Winter 2011 Press Tour the broadcast networks begin. Up today will be ABC. The schedule started after breakfast with an executive session with Ben Sherwood of ABC News, followed by an executive sessions with Paul Lee of ABC Entertainment. ABC News will produce more documentaries year-round for primetime, similar to series like Boston Med. On the entertainment side, we learned that ABC has given early pick-ups for the 2011-12 season for Castle, Cougar Town, Grey's Anatomy, The Middle, Modern Family and Private Practice. All of those are no-doubters for us. Desperate Housewives is not on this list yet due to contract negotiations going on for the cast, but it will come back we think, as it is one of the top shows still in 18-49. Brothers & Sisters is also likely for some sort of pick-up, but it depends on the rest of 2011 performance. Lee has "ambitions" on picking it up Decisions on freshman shows, like Detroit 1-8-7, won't be announced for another 2-3 months or at upfront. V only has 10 episodes this season because of "quality control" and it has paid off. Lee would also like to have two nights of comedy next season. He didn't specify if the second night would be an hour or a two-hour block. Pilot pick-ups so far are an untitled Shonda Rhimes crisis management project and comedies Man Up and Smothered. Casting and more still to come on these pilots. ABC is also working on an Incredible Hulk revival from Marvel in the next year or so.
After the executive session, there was a cocoa klatch with Winter Wipeout. Host John Henson, co-host Jill Wagner, showrunner Matt Kunitz and even Ballsy were on hand for casual conversation and a tasty, hot beverage. Winter Wipeout airs Thursdays at 8pm on ABC and is off to a fantastic start in the ratings. After that, there was an executive session with new ABC Family President Michael Riley. We learned that ABC Family has given new season orders to two of the network's hit series, The Secret Life of the American Teenager" which has been renewed for a fourth season, and Pretty Little Liars, which was picked-up for a second season. Both new seasons are slated to start airing sometime in summer 2011. Both series still have to finish their second halves of the current season, with Liars airing Mondays through March 21, then Secret Life returns March 28 for its last batch of episodes this season.
Following that, there were panels for ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars (airs Mondays at 8pm) and ABC's new tropical medical drama Off the Map, which premieres Wednesday at 10pm. Then it was off to lunch with Disney Junior with Gary Marsh (President, Disney Channels Worldwide) and Nancy Kanter (SVP, Disney Junior Worldwide) for casual conversation and a special performance by The Never Land Pirate Band.
Following the lunch break, there was an actual session with Gary Marsh of Disney Channels Worldwide. The new network Disney Junior launches on Monday, Feb. 14. That was followed by a panel with the cast and producers of the upcoming Disney Channel original movie Lemonade Mouth starring Bridgit Mendler, Adam Hicks, Hayley Kiyoko, Naomi Scott, Blake Michael, Nick Roux and Tisha
Campbell-Martin. The event concludes tonight with an Off the Map Mid-season Mixer where we are joined by the stars and showrunners of many of ABC's mid-season series for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres themed to Off the Map. The reason why there weren't any panels for upcoming sitcoms Mr. Sunshine and Happy Endings, drama Body of Proof, and reality series Secret Millionaire, was because they all had panels already at the TCA Summer 2010 press tour. Stay tuned tomorrow for an update from the Fox's day at the TCA press tour.

Comedy Central and MTV Networks, both divisions of Viacom, have tapped New York City to host The Comedy Awards, the first-ever multi-network, multi-platform, annual event dedicated to honoring and celebrating the world of comedy. A night for comedy of all kinds, The Comedy Awards will be taped at New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom on Saturday, March 26 and will premiere on Sunday, April 10, 2011, simultaneously across MTV Networks' Comedy Central, Spike TV, TV Land, VH1 and Nick at Nite. All of these networks feature some sort of comedy.
Comedy elite including James Burrows, Billy Crystal, Will Ferrell, Whoopi Goldberg, Brad Grey, Seth MacFarlane, Adam McKay, Jimmy Miller, Jay Roach, Ray Romano, Rory Rosegarten, Phil Rosenthal and many more are among the first to join "The Comedy Awards" Board of Directors which will be responsible for selecting the nominees. The winners will be chosen by an invitation-only voting body comprised of 500-1000 members from the comedy community -- including writers, producers, performers and directors. BLOG FEATURE REVIEW

Private Practice - The Complete Third Season

DVD Review: Private Practice - The Complete Third Season
by Pavan

Private Practice - The Complete Third Season (ABC Studios, $45.99) brings the third season of the Grey's Anatomy spin-off starring Kate Walsh on DVD with all 23 episodes! Relive every moment of the medical drama and the challenges that Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) and her co-workers at Oceanside Wellness Group face every day have bonded them into a tight-knit family, but big changes may be just around the the corner.
The series will once again return to its Thursdays at 10PM timeslot on ABC this coming season following Grey's Anatomy. The series stars Kate Walsh as Dr. Addison Forbes Montgomery (Obstetrics & Gynecology, Genetic Counseling), Tim Daly as Dr. Pete Wilder (Complementary Medicine), Audra McDonald as Dr. Naomi Bennett (Endocrinology & Fertility), Paul Adelstein as Dr. Cooper Freedman (Pediatrics), KaDee Strickland as Dr. Charolotte King (Chief of Staff at the nearby hospital), Chris Lowell as Dell Parker (Receptionist/Nurse), with Taye Diggs as Dr. Sam Bennett (Internal Medicine), and Amy Brenneman as Dr. Violet Turner (Psychiatry). Among the recurring stars are Brian Benben, Geffri Maya, Hailey Sole, Michael Patrick Thornton, Agnes Bruckner, Caterina Scorsone, Christina Chang, Stephen Lunsford and James Morrison. Among the special guests this year are Amanda Detmer, JoBeth Williams, Stephen Collins, Amanda Foreman, and from Grey's Anatomy cross-overs Chandra Wilson & Eric Dane.

This third season was excellent and filled with lots of drama. I think it was probably their best season both with the medical cases and the personal stories. The season was very well written. The fourth season premieres on Sept. 23 and we cannot wait for that. Anyway, as for season three, some memorable episodes include the season premiere, "A Death in the Family," where after Pete discovers Violet dying on the floor of her home, having barely survived a violent attack from her patient, Katie, he rushes her to the hospital where Addison and Naomi fight to save her life, while the whereabouts and condition of Violet's stolen baby are unknown. In "Right Here, Right Now," Miranda Bailey (Grey's Anatomy's Chandra Wilson) brings a kidney transplant patient to Los Angeles, and Addison isn't the only Oceanside Wellness doctor pleased to see her. In "Strange Bedfellows," Katie Kent is apprehended and on trial and Violet is asked to testify against her attacker, but she struggles with whether or not she can face her attacker in court. In the classic episode, "The Hard Part," Addison and Sam go for a hike in Malibu, and must perform urgent field care when they stumble upon an expecting couple, trapped in their car after an accident. In the two-part episode "The Parent Trap/Blowups," Addison performs a complex in utero surgery, proving not only her talents to her father but also finally giving them some common ground and later a terrible explosion at Dell's house lands Betsey and Heather in the hospital, and everyone is pushed to the limit trying to save their lives. In "Another Second Chance," Desperate to help his pregnant daughter, Mark (Eric Dane) follows Addison back to Oceanside Wellness, Dell and Naomi struggle to raise their children under the same roof, and Violet and Cooper heatedly disagree on how to treat a patient. In "Til Death Do Us Part," as Violet continues to help Sam with Maya's wedding, Naomi refuses to take part as she works with Addison and Pete to save the life of a 25-week-old premature baby. In "Second Choices," after her open-ended escape to Costa Rica, Violet has finally returned home and to the practice and everyone treads a little lightly around her, especially Pete and Addison who have mixed feelings about Violet's desire to reconnect with Lucas. And in the thrilling season finale, "The End of a Beautiful Friendship," Maya and her unborn baby are fighting for their lives on the operating table, and Addison, Amelia and Fife try everything humanly possible to save them, while Sam operates on an incoming crash victim and later makes a grim discovery and then later an unexpected death occurs.

The episodes run usually close to 43 minutes, unedited of course with all the great music intact. There are about 7 chapter stops per episode. View the episode runtimes:

Packaging has an outer box that you can remove from the top or bottom then you'll see the keep case inside. We previously had a digipak, but now ABC Studios has changed it to a keep case. Both the outer box and keep case have the same cover, a cast photo of them on the beach with medical tools. The show logo is on the top in white wording in a purple background. The back of the box and keep case has that purple background with information on the set and has some episodic screen shots from episodes that feature all eight of our stars. There is also a section detailing the bonus features box with technical specifications also. Opening the case, on the left side we see a pocket that holds inserts and on the pocket itself we have a disc-by-disc breakdown with episode titles and bonus features and nice promotional photos, as last time. There are two inserts in the left side pocket. We don't get an episode booklet again. There are inserts for other ABC Studios products and an insert for Blu-ray. We have two little plastic holders, that we can flip like a page on a book. The first holder holds disc one in the front, and disc two in the back. The second holder holds disc three in the front, and disc four in the back. Disc five is on the right panel itself. Each disc matches the set's color scheme, that purple background and has nice character artwork. Disc one has episodes 1-4 with artwork of Addison. Disc two has episodes 5-9 and has artwork of Cooper & Charlotte. Disc three has episodes 10-14 and has artwork of Violet & Pete. Disc four has episodes 15-19 and has artwork of Naomi & Sam. Disc five has episodes 20-23 plus bonus features and has artwork of Dell. When you remove the discs, the panels have nice artwork of different characters, as mentioned.

The menu screen has clips in the background with background music from the series playing in the background audio wise, similar to last time. The options on the main menu are Play All, Episode Selection, Set Up, Bonus Features (disc five), and Sneak Peeks (disc one). But before the main menu screen comes on disc one, we get some auto sneak peeks of other DVDs: ABC on DVD, Grey's Anatomy Season 6, Desperate Housewives Season 6, and Castle Season 2. Sneak Peeks option is only found on disc five on the main menu and has previews of many titles like Cougar Town, Prince of Persia, A Christmas Carol, Blu-ray titles, and ABC: Great Stories. Set Up section has the option of subtitles in English, French or Spanish and how you can register your DVD. The Episodes option gives us the episode number, title and a screenshot. Bonus Features option is only on disc five and it has all the extras listed. All of the sub-menus have different background music once again.

The video is digitally mastered and is in widescreen and looks very good! The audio is great and sounds very good, as it is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. This is from the 2009-10 season, so it had better be good. Now as I discussed in the Grey's Anatomy Season 6 DVD Review, only the crossover episodes that aired as its own episode are here. So on the Grey's DVD, if it was under a Grey's episode, it is on that DVD only and not on the Private Practice DVD. So we don't get the Grey's Anatomy episodes "Invasion" (in which we see Dr. Bailey at the end of the episode saying she is going to California), and "Blink" (with Addison in Seattle helping Mark). It would have been nice if we had those episodes as extras at least! Buy the Grey's Season 6 DVD, I guess.

Moving on the bonus features. Technically this isn't a bonus, but on disc one we have an ABC Starter Kit (4:44) that recaps what has happened so far. A nice little fresher! All of the other extras are on disc five! We have a featurette titled "Kate's Top 8" (12:15). This is a very good extra that has Kate Walsh giving the eight best things about season three. Interviewed are Kate Walsh, Brian Haynes (location manager), Audra McDonald, Taye Diggs, KaDee Strickland, Chris Lowell, Shonda Rhimes & Betsy Beers, Amy Brenneman, Paul Adelstein, Cynthia Bergstrom (costume designer) and Tim Daly.
Then we have "Deleted Scenes" listed with episode titles so you know where they are from! We do NOT have optional audio commentary on these deleted scenes from Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers like last time, though. Too bad. If my counting skills are correct, we have about 13 deleted scenes, down from the 23 the previous season. "The Way We Were" (1:49), "Pushing the Limits" (0:57), "Slip Slidin' Away" (0:58), "The Hard Part" (1:35), "Another Second Chance" (1:09), "Best Laid Plans" ((0:29, 1:19), "Shotgun" (1:17), "Triangles" (0:45), "Pulling the Plug" (0:42), "Eyes Wide Open" (1:11), "Second Chances" (1:23), and "War" (1:01). Finally, we have some "Bloopers" (4:25)...yes, bloopers! See all the goofs and play on the set! The timing is up a lick from the last set, too, but really on par.

I recommend this series and set...it is an ABC Studios DVD, so it is good and filled with special features. I think we don't get as many special features as last time, though, which is strange. The packaging changed from digipak to a keep case. Not sure if that is good, but at least overlapping discs are gone. This season was great and perhaps my favorite so far. You'll want to tune in for sure on Sept. 23 for the fourth season premiere, but you need to refresh yourself, catch up with these 23 season three episodes first! Lots of changes happened this season. Mostly sad stuff, but there are light moments that will have you smile. Check into Oceanside Wellness and you'll be treated well!

Nick at Nite Ends Chris Marathon Early; ABC 2010 Season Finale Dates; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of April 12, 2010)

Nick at Nite has been airing a week-long Everybody Hates Chris marathon from 10pm-6am all week since Monday (April 5), but they have pulled the event for tonight (Friday, April 9). Maybe the ratings weren't as good as their normal schedule? Anyway, airing tonight now will be the normal Friday line-up, but 2-5am will be an expanded block of Family Matters and not Everybody Hates Chris from 2-4am as usual on Friday nights. However, Everybody Hates Chris will still air tonight in the 9pm hour.
There are some additional one-time changes for the rest of the weekend, too. On Saturday (April 10), Everybody Hates Chris will air in the 9pm hour instead of Nickelodeon programming. The Nanny will be expanded to 10pm-1am, replacing an hour of George Lopez from 10-11pm. The 3am hour of Everybody Hates Chris will be replaced Family Matters, which will air 3-5am on the night. Chris will remain the 2am hour, though. And then on Sunday (April 11), George Lopez is expanded to 9-11pm, replacing the 9pm hour of Everybody Hates Chris. Airing from 11pm-2am will be The Nanny, as it is expanded and replacing an hour of Malcolm in the Middle from 1-2am on this night. Finally, 2-5am will be another expanded Family Matters, as Everybody Hates Chris is preempted in the 2am hour.
Strange schedule changes, but as of now they are for this weekend only. View these changes in a list form.

ABC has announced most of their season finale dates for the 2009-2010 season. The first finale is the series finale of Ugly Betty next Wednesday (April 14) at 10pm. Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution will have its season finale on Friday, April 23 at 9pm. Then the rest of the finales will be during May sweep. First up is Private Practice on Thursday, May 13 at 10pm. The ABC Sunday night line-up of America's Funniest Home Videos, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters will have their finales on Sunday, May 16 from 7-11pm! The very next night (Monday, May 17) the season finale of surging hit Castle will air at 10pm. On Tuesday, May 18 we see the season finale of V at 10pm following part one of the LOST series finale at 9pm. On Wednesday, May 19, ABC Comedy Wednesday will have their season finales from 8:30-10p featuring The Middle, Modern Family, and Cougar Town. On the last Thursday of the season, on Thursday, May 20, ABC presents a two-hour season finale of Grey's Anatomy from 9-11pm! Then on Sunday, May 23, ABC devotes the entire night to LOST, as it concludes its run. From 7-9pm will be a recap/clip show followed by the two-hour series finale from 9-11pm. Dancing with the Stars wraps up season ten on Monday, May 24 at 8pm and the two-hour grand finale on Tuesday, May 25 from 9-11pm! And finally ABC ends FLASHFORWARD with a thrilling season finale on Thursday, May 27 at 8pm.
Season finale dates for Romantically Challenged, Happy Town, and Wife Swap were not announced yet. And 20/20 is new all-year.

It's Friday, so it is time for "Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows" for the coming week. Summer Week 16 Sitcom Ratings; Blog DVD Review: Private Practice - The Complete Second Season (9/15)

Summer is winding down with just 8 days left until the start of the 2009-2010 season on Sept. 21. We will be back with our normal weekly report two weeks from today with the first four nights numbers and analysis...but today we still have our regular how the sitcoms did for the remainder of the summer! Here are our summer sitcom ratings for this past week:

Last Sunday Sitcoms (counts for week of August 30-Sept. 6)

  • Til Death (Fox) - A repeat at 7pm did only 1.17 million...but it was Labor Day weekend.
  • The Simpsons (Fox) - preempted for a movie.
  • King of the Hill (Fox) - preempted for a movie...one-hour series finale airs tonight.
  • Family Guy (Fox) - preempted for a movie.
  • American Dad! (Fox) - preempted for a movie.

Summer Week 16 (September 7-13)

Monday Sitcoms
  • How I Met Your Mother (CBS) 2 episodes - 4.46 million for a repeat airing in its normal 8pm slot. A repeat at 8:30pm did 4.95 million...both were down from recent weeks, Labor Day I guess.
  • Two and a Half Men (CBS) - 9.02 million for a repeat on Labor Day, yet up from previous week I believe.
  • The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - 8.09 million for a repeat. 2.8 18-49 rating is excellent for repeats, and the best of the CBS sitcom block for this night.
Tuesday Sitcoms

Wednesday Sitcoms

  • Old Christine (CBS) - preempted for Obama Address to Congress.
  • Gary Unmarried (CBS) - preempted for Obama Address to Congress.
Thursday Sitcoms

  • The Office (NBC) 2 episodes - preempted for NFL Opening Night game.

Elsewhere ABC has a new Shark Tank at 9pm and the season finale of drama Defying Gravity at 10pm. It is time for a special Sunday edition of the "Blog DVD Review." This week we take a look at ABC Studios' Private Practice: The Complete Second Season. Private Practice is the hit spin-off series of Grey's Anatomy that has Addison (Kate Walsh) in Los Angeles to work at her best friend's 'private practice' instead of the big hospital surgeries. See my Blog DVD review of Private Practice: The Complete Second Season:

Private Practice: The Complete Second Season (ABC Studios, $39.99) brings the second season of the Grey's Anatomy spin-off starring Kate Walsh on DVD with all 22 episodes! This season we experience all the challenges, changes, and second chanced found in this sizzling hit. This year Oceanside Wellness will have a competitor, as neo-netal surgeon Dr. Addison Montgomery will face the challenge of bringing the practice back on its feet after a rough patch.
The series will return to its Thursdays at 10PM timeslot on ABC this coming season following Grey's Anatomy. The series stars Kate Walsh as Dr. Addison Forbes Montgomery (Obstetrics & Gynecology, Genetic Counseling), Tim Daly as Dr. Pete Wilder (Complementary Medicine), Audra McDonald as Dr. Naomi Bennett (Endocrinology & Fertility), Paul Adelstein as Dr. Cooper Freedman (Pediatrics), KaDee Strickland as Dr. Charolotte King (Chief of Staff at the nearby hospital), Chris Lowell as Dell Parker (Receptionist/Nurse), with Taye Diggs as Dr. Sam Bennett (Internal Medicine), and Amy Brenneman as Dr. Violet Turner (Psychiatry). Among the recurring stars are David Sutcliffe, Brian Benben, Grant Show, Jayne Brook, Josh Hopkins, and Jay Harrington. Among the special guests this year are Amy Acker, Ernie Hudson, Bill Dee Williams, Liz Torres, Patty McCormack, Amanda Detmer, Idina Menzel and the cast of Grey's Anatomy in a cross-over.

This second season was I believe a lot better than the first season when it was shortened by the strike and was trying to find itself. The series moved to Thursdays at 10pm in January after airing Wednesdays at 9pm prior to that. The third season premieres on October and I have seen the season premiere already and it leaves off where the second season leaves off. It is a great premiere you won't want to miss, for sure! Anyway, as for season two, some memorable episodes include the season premiere, "A Family Thing," where friendships are tested and secrets are revealed when Addison discovers that Naomi is concealing the practice's financial problems. In "Nothing to Talk About," Charlotte tries to woo Addison to St. Ambrose Hospital with promises of surgeries, as Addison and Kevin's relationship heats up. In "Tempting Faith," Addison receives a surprise visit from her brother and fellow surgeon, Archer (Grant Show), and his presence not only causes trouble for her, but for Naomi and Sam as well. In "Know When to Fold," Charlotte's rival practice, Pacific Wellcare, opens its doors and the competition with Oceanside Wellness begins, as Sam and Pete steal one of their clients, a favorite patient of Addison's goes to a Pacific Wellcare doctor for a second opinion. In "Homeward Bound," as Addison and Kevin struggle in their relationship, she finds herself attracted to Wyatt, the cocky doctor from rival Pacific Wellcare, while Violet seeks a way to carry on relationships with both Pete and Sheldon (Brian Benben), and Cooper grows closer to Charlotte when she experiences a family emergency. In "Acceptance," when Archer suffers a seizure, Addison and Naomi search for a cause and a cure and later call Derek for help. In "Ex-Life," Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Naomi try to discover why Sam has a sudden asthma attack while Addison helps Derek (Patrick Dempsey) save the life of his pregnant patient, in a cross-over episode with Grey's Anatomy. In "Finishing," Addison is attracted to a colleague at St. Ambrose Hospital who turns out to be more than she bargained for, while Pete and Sheldon team up to persuade Violet to take a paternity test, but she firmly resists their effort. In the outstanding season finale "Yours, Mine, and Ours," as Violet chooses between Pete and Sheldon, Addison faces her feelings for Noah as Morgan goes into labor, while Dell has concerns for his daughter when a drugged-out Heather returns to town and Naomi must decide if it's in her best interest to stay with Oceanside Wellness or start anew at Pacific Wellcare. And in the cliff-hanger, a grief-stricken patient poses a danger to Violet.

The episodes run usually close to 43 minutes (unless it is an extended episode, which I will discuss a bit later)...unedited of course with all the great music intact. There are about 7 chapter stops per episode. The video is digitally mastered and is in widescreen and looks very good! The audio is great and sounds very good, as it is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. This is from the 2008-09 season, so it had better be good. Now as I discussed in the Grey's Anatomy Season 5 DVD Review, only the crossover episodes that aired as its own episode are here. So on the Grey's DVD, if it was under a Grey's episode, it is on that DVD only and not on the Private Practice DVD. So we don't get the Grey's Anatomy episodes "Beat Your Heart Out" (in which we see Derek at the end of the episode receiving the phone call from Addison), "Before and After" (the first actual cross-over with the gang going to Seattle) and "An Honest Mistake" (as Addison hangs around in Seattle to help on a case). It would have been nice if we had those episodes as extras at least! "Before and After" at least should be here as that episode is really needed, as the Private episode "Ex-Life" needs that episode to make sense. Buy the Grey's Season 5 DVD, I guess.

Packaging has an outer box that you can remove from the right then you'll see the digipak case inside, as last time. The outer box's cover has a nice big photo of Addison's face (with long hair) in the middle, with the seven remaining stars below that. The show logo is on the top in white wording and blue background. The back of the box has that blue background with information on the set and has some episodic screen shots from episodes that feature all eight of our stars. There is also a section detailing the bonus features box with technical specifications also. On the case itself, we have a nice cast photo at the beach on the front with the show logo and a nice blue background. The back of the case has the same style, with a episodic photos of Charlotte & Violet and one of Cooper. Opening the case, on the left side we see a pocket that holds inserts and on the pocket itself we have a disc-by-disc breakdown with episode titles and bonus features. There are two inserts in the left side pocket. We don't get an episode booklet this time, which is strange...but seems to be the case for all ABC DVDs this fall. Then there is an insert for other ABC Studios products and an insert for Blu-ray. On the right side of the case, we see an episodic photo of Sam and Naomi. Then we open the case again, in the middle we see discs one & two (overlapping, ugh) and the right side we see an episodic photo of Addison and Pete with Dell & Violet in the background. Opening the case on final time, we have a panel for discs three & four and on the far right we have a panel for discs five & six. Each disc matches the set's color scheme, that blue background and has nice character artwork. Disc one has episodes 1-4 with artwork of Addison & Pete. Disc two has episodes 5-8 and has artwork of Sam & Naomi. Disc three has episodes 9-12 and has artwork of Cooper & Violet. Disc four has episodes 13-16 and has artwork of Dell & Charlotte. Disc five has episodes 17-20 and has artwork of the entire cast. And finally disc six has episodes 21-22 and the bonus features with artwork of palm trees. When you remove the discs, the panels have nice artwork of different characters.

The menu screen has clips in the background with background music from the series playing in the background audio wise. The options on the main menu are Play All, Episode Selection, Set Up, Bonus Features (disc six), and Sneak Peeks (disc six). But before the main menu screen comes on disc one, we get some auto sneak peeks of other DVDs: ABC on DVD, Grey's Anatomy Season 5, Desperate Housewives, The Proposal, and Blu-ray DVD. Sneak Peeks option is only found on disc six on the main menu and has previews of many titles like Ugly Betty, Life on Mars, Castle DVDs, and an ABC promo for Grey's Anatomy. Set Up section has the option of subtitles in English, French or Spanish and how you can register your DVD. The Episodes option gives us the episode number, title and a screenshot. Bonus Features option is only on disc six and it has all the extras listed. All of the sub-menus have different background music.

Moving on the bonus features. We get two extended episodes with never before scenes! The extended episodes are "Crime and Punishment" (53:17) and "Nothing to Fear" (60:04). Wow, those are song long episodes! We also have an ABC Starter Kit (4:41) that recaps what has happened so far. A nice little fresher! This is listed in the episodes section on disc one.
All of the other extras are on disc six! We have an interview featurette titled "Patient Confidentiality: Examining Season 2" (12:50). This is a very good detailed extra that gives us the inside scoop on season two. Interviewed are Shonda Rhimes & Betsy Beers, Amy Brenneman, Paul Adelstein, and Tim Daly. We have one more featurette titled "Life Through the Lens: The Pictures of Chris Lowell" (8:08). This shows us Chris' talent of photography and we also see some cool shots from his collection. He travels a lot as well. Interviewed are Chris Lowell, Tim Daly, KaDee Strickland, Paul Adelstein, Kate Walsh, and Taye Diggs.
Then we have "Deleted Scenes" that are better organized and handled on this set. They are listed with episode titles so you know where they are from! We also have optional audio commentary on these deleted scenes from Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers! So you'll know why they were removed from the actual airing. If my counting skills are correct, we have about 23 deleted scenes! They are from episodes "A Family Thing," "Equal & Opposite," "Nothing to Talk About," "Past Tense," "Let It Go," "Know When to Fold," World's Apart," "Contamination", "Homeward Bound," "Second Chances," "Wait and See," "Finishing," "What Women Want," and "What You Do for Love." Finally, we have some "Bloopers" (4:16)...yes, bloopers! See all the goofs and play on the set!

I recommend this series and set...it is an ABC Studios DVD, so it is good and filled with special features. I think this series broke out after the crossover episodes and now it will have a full season behind Grey's Anatomy on Thursday nights. This season is miles better than the shortened first season and the characters have personalities and great stories and you won't want to miss this. As I mentioned, I saw the third season premiere in advance already and it is a very well written episode and leaves off where we last left off. It focuses on the hospital, but it is intense. You'll want to tune in for sure on Oct. 1, but you need to refresh yourself, catch up with these 22 season two episodes first! You won't need to have an illness or injury to watch this season on DVD, so no excuses to click on the link below to order today!
