Comedian, host and reality star Theo Von (Primetime in No Time, Last Comic Standing) is set to host TBS's upcoming new series Deal With It, from executive producer Howie Mandel. The hidden-camera show with a twist based on a successful format created by Keshet Broadcasting and United Studios is slated to premiere Tuesday, July 16, at 10pm (ET/PT). In TBS's Deal With It, unsuspecting members of the public will be secretly dared to pull a prank on their unwitting companions with absolutely no time to prepare. If they agree to participate, they must obey all instructions given through an earpiece from a secret control room nearby. With the opportunity to prank their way to cash and prizes, these everyday people will be shown no mercy as they are tasked with pulling off some of the most ridiculous behavior ever caught on hidden camera. Host Theo Von is the host of Yahoo!'s popular daily recap show, Primetime in No Time, the most successful video series online. As a comedian, he headlines comedy clubs across the country and was featured in one of the highest rated half-hour specials on Comedy Central last year. He also appeared on the hit series Last Comic Standing. Theo first came to the public's attention when he starred on MTV's popular reality series Road Rules. In addition to his on-screen appearances, Theo created CrankTexts.com, a website where he texts random cellphone numbers and gets into conversations with total strangers. Six episodes have been ordered.

TBS also has another upcoming series Trust Me, I'm a Game Show Host still not scheduled. 10 episodes have been ordered for this series from Mark Burnett (The Bible, Shark Tank). This is a comedic game show in which two hosts each present the single contestant with a different answer to the same question. One host gives the correct answer, while the other lies and gives an incorrect answer. The contestant must then choose the right answer to move on in the game. This is the first game show where two hosts duel to deceive contestants. The players who prove themselves to be super-human lie detectors will go home with a pocketful of cash. Stay with us for a premiere date on that as soon as it is announced.

We just mentioned a few Leave it to Beaver news items recently, including about the sitcom leaving Antenna TV and moving to MeTV and also the passing of Frank Bank (Lumpy Rutherford). Now, we have news on a "farewell" marathon on Antenna TV, since the sitcom is leaving the network. Transform your Sunday into "Sonday" and spend Sunday, April 28 with America's favorite sons, Wally and the Beaver Cleaver. Antenna TV, which airs on 74 affiliates across the U.S., reaching 63% of TV households, will air a 40 episode/20 hour Leave it to Beaver marathon on Sunday, April 28 beginning at 9am ET and lasting through 5am ET. ABC's Comedy Wednesday sitcom starring Jane Levy and Jeremy Sisto, airs Wednesday nights at 8:30pm and we have just watched the two-episode season finale that airs tonight (April 17), starting at a special time of 8pm ET. In the first episode airing tonight, "Apocalypse Meow," Dallas (Cheryl Hines) offers to help George (Jeremy Sisto) tell Tessa (Jane Levy) that he's sold their house and that they're combining residences, but it doesn't go as planned. The rift between Dalia (Carly Chaikin) and Tessa widens as Dalia goes out of her way to make Tessa miserable and Tessa seeks break-up revenge. Meanwhile, Noah (Alan Tudyk) obsesses over Carmen (guest star Bunnie Rivera) even though she's dating his therapist (guest star Todd Louiso). On the season finale, "Stray Dogs," Sheila (Ana Gasteyer) launches a chastity campaign in Chatswin and convinces Mr. Wolfe (Rex Lee) to throw a Chastity Ball at the high school, assuming that Lisa (Allie Grant) will be crowned queen of the ball. Meanwhile George (Jeremy Sisto) buys a house for Dallas (Cheryl Hines) and receives a visit from her ex-husband (guest star Jay Mohr), and Tessa (Jane Levy) sets up residence in her bathroom stall at school.

The 2-episode season finale continues where we left off last week. Things are getting interesting and soapy between Dalia and Tessa after Tessa finds out that Dalia was the reason why she and Ryan broke up. The first half-hour sets-up the finale with George selling the house but he still hasn't told Tessa. Dallas offers to help tell her, but will she actually do it and Tessa finds out another way? There's also a nice scene between Dalia and "Daddy" Altman (aka George), while Tessa and Dallas indulge in pasta before Tessa tells how she really feels about Dalia. I'm still not 100% sure why Dalia is trying to mess everything up for Tessa, but we have an all-out cat fight in the episode and it is pretty physical. Not quite campy like Dynasty or Desperate Housewives, but maybe a bit more realistic. In other plotlines, Lisa has a hilarious one about "meow mixes." It's hilarious. The plotline about Noah trying to get revenge on Dr. Bob over the Carmen thing is getting old and needs to end, I think. Either put them together or just stop it. The first half-hour ends with Tessa saying she's "outta here"...you'll have to see why.



In the second half-hour, Tessa is looking for places to stay. She can't find anyone to stay with, so she ends up staying temporarily in the school bathroom. The other plotlines for this episode are the Chastity Ball hosted by Sheila (but her expectations are not met) and of course Dallas and George preparing to move into their new house. There is so much that happens during the rest of the finale that it is best I not say. The finale is well-written and has so many "oh my god" moments. We have a lot of cliffhangers, surprise returns (I'll tell you one person who returns: Dallas' ex-husband and he tries to start a cat fight of his own) and a stray dog. I can't really say what a stray dog has to do with all this, but it will make sense when you watch the finale tonight. Does Dalia want her father back or does she want Daddy Altman instead? And why is she trying to make Tessa's life a living hell? Is it because she wants George all to herself? I don't know, but that Dalia is one interesting and complex character. We have a nice moment between Tessa and Ryan as well, but will it last? It's a great finale for a great show. I can't wait for next season, which I'm about 95% sure will happen. Tune in tonight for great storylines and writing. First episode: B+, Second episode: A-




On the next...How to Live with Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life):

ABC's Comedy Wednesday sitcom starring Sarah Chalke, Elizabeth Perkins and Brad Garrett and airs Wednesday nights at 9:30pm and we have just watched the next episode that airs tonight (April 17). In the episode airing tonight, "How To Live With The Academy Awards Party," the family celebrate their favorite holiday - the Oscars. Polly (Sarah Chalke) invites an old classmate over for the event and tries to impress him (guest star Reid Scott). Meanwhile, Max (Brad Garrett) thinks that Elaine (Elizabeth Perkins) has too close a relationship with her brother (guest star)Joe Wengert, and tensions explode at the party.

In this episode we get to enjoy a very special holiday episode... or at least something that Max and Elaine consider to be a holiday, the Oscars. With the big Oscar party coming up, Polly decides to reinvent her life, quite literally, when she has the opportunity to be with an old classmate whom she only remembers through a rear-view mirror. Only now, he seems to have found great success in life. It seems that we have yet another dating episode of the series (and perhaps a series of mishaps), and honestly, I often find such episodes to be a bit too predictable. But I actually didn't mind this one, and thought that it was a rather enjoyable episode. Essentially, for Polly to get what she wants, she decides to pretend to be somebody that she isn't, and the family is rather supportive of that. But there was a bit of suspense in the episode, wondering if/when she'll be caught and what the outcome of being caught would be. As much as I enjoyed that element of suspense, I actually found the end result to be predictable, but it was still an enjoyable plot nonetheless.



While I enjoyed the main plot of the episode, I do feel that the B-plots were rather weak. The first one involves the relationship between Max and Elaine's brother, where there is clearly some animosity, but the story doesn't really seem to be fully developed. We're told that it is about taking sides, but it didn't seem to be much to explain why anybody was taking sides. We tend to expect a bit more of an explanation in modern sitcoms. Meanwhile, over at Julian's place, Natalie is having a pretty miserable time (something that seems to be a regular thing no matter what Natalie is doing), but once again, this doesn't all quite make sense either, as this isn't fully explained either. Regardless, I found this to be another decent episode of a series that I'm hoping we'll see quite a bit more of. A-

NBC has announced premiere dates for the new high stakes adventure competition series Get Out Alive With Bear Grylls, and the highly anticipated summer dramedy Camp, while also setting debuts for new comedy Save Me and returning reality American Ninja Warrior. As previously announced, America's Got Talent premieres its eighth season on Tuesday, June 4 from 9-11pm ET and will air weekly in that block. America's Got Talent begins its Wednesday run on July 10 from 9-10 pm ET. Back to the new announcements, Anne Heche stars in the comedy Save Me, which is set to debut Thursday, May 23 at 8 and 8:30 pm ET with two back-to-back episodes. Heche portrays a Midwestern mom and wife who undergoes a spiritual awakening after suffering a near-death experience. The series will air for four weeks, as of now, through June 13. This looks like a burn-off. Next, on Monday, July 1 from 8-10 pm ET, the summer favorite American Ninja Warrior returns to the NBC lineup with a two-hour special. The series, with hosts Matt Iseman and former NFL player Akbar Gbaja Biamila, will return to its regularly scheduled one-hour timeslot Monday, July 8 from 8-9 pm ET. American Ninja Warrior also airs on NBCUniversal-owned Esquire Network. The series will lead into new reality Get Out Alive With Bear Grylls, which will make its debut Monday, July 8 at 9pm ET. It is a larger-than-life adventure reality competition series. Grylls, a world-renowned survivalist, leads a non-stop extreme-survival journey that tests 10 teams of two beyond their wildest imaginations as they venture into the unforgiving and dramatic landscape of New Zealand's South Island.

Following the Wednesday premiere of America's Got Talent on July 10, new drama Camp, which stars Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters) as a divorced camp director looking for a fresh start. It will launch Wednesday, July 10 at 10pm ET. The series explores the campers and counselors at Little Otter Family Camp, where summer memories are made. In other minor updates, reruns of The Office and Parks & Recreation will follow Save Me from 9-10pm from May 23 to June 13. Then starting June 20, Parks & Recreation reruns will replace Save Me from 8-9pm, while The Office repeats air for a full hour from 9-10pm. The rest of the summer schedule will be repeats, with Grimm reruns on Fridays from 8-10pm into Rock Center. It's still unclear what will air on Tuesdays at 8pm starting June 25 following the conclusion of The Voice. And one final note, the season finale of Chicago Fire will now be on May 22 at 10pm, rather than May 15. Actor and comedian Jonathan Winters, who appeared in Mork & Mindy and won an Emmy Award for his role in Davis Rules, has died. He died on April 11 in Montecito, California, of natural causes. Mr. Winters was 87.

Winters first appeared on television in 1954 on the game show Chance of a Lifetime. Some of his early television appearances included Omnibus, Pass the Line, The Blue Angel, And Here's the Show and The Colgate Comedy Hour. Winters appeared in 17 episodes of The NBC Comedy Hour Show in 1956. In 1956-1957, he starred in The Jonathan Winters Show, which was a 15-minute comedy/variety series. He appeared as James Howard "Fats" Brown in a 1961 episode of Twilight Zone. Winters starred in his own one-hour variety show for two seasons from 1967-1969 on CBS. He later starred in the syndicated comedy variety series The Wacky World of Jonathan Winters from 1972-1974.

Winters joined the cast of Mork & Mindy for its fourth and final season in 1981-1982. He played Mork & Mindy's child, Mearth. Winters was the idol of Robin Williams. Despite some funny improvised moments, the show struggled in the ratings and was canceled. Winters later became a regular in Hee Haw in the 1983-1984 season. He went on to voice Grandpa Smurf in The Smurfs from 1986-89. He voiced Papa Smurf in the 2011 film The Smurfs and the upcoming The Smurfs 2. In 1992, he voiced Mayor Cod in Fish Police, a 1992 CBS series featuring many stars like John Ritter, Ed Asner, Tim Curry and Robert Guillaume. His many other voice credits included The Pound Puppies, The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley, Gravedale High, Garfield and Friends, Tiny Toon Adventures, Frosty Returns, Animaniacs and Yogi the Easter Bear.

In 1991-1992, he starred in the ABC and later CBS sitcom Davis Rules. Winters played Gunny Davis, the eccentric father of Dwight Davis (Randy Quaid) who gave outlandish advice. He won an Emmy Award for his supporting role in 1991. In 2002, he received an Emmy nomination for his guest appearance in Life with Bonnie. Robin Williams presented Winters the Pioneer TV Land Award in 2008.

The Archive of American Television conducted an extensive interview with him on October 11, 2002. Survivors include his two children Jay and Lucinda Winters and five grandchildren. His wife of more than 60 years, Eileen Schauder, died in 2009. Mr. Winters was a true comedic genius and legend. He was an idol and inspiration for many comedians. Hopefully they will release the final season of Mork & Mindy on DVD at some point. We thank him for bringing us many laughs over the years. Mr. Winters will be deeply missed.

Actor Frank Bank, best known as Clarence "Lumpy" Rutherford in Leave it to Beaver, has died. Bank died on April 13 in Los Angeles from undisclosed causes. Mr. Bank had just celebrated his 71st birthday the day before on April 12.

Bank first appeared in Leave it to Beaver in the first season episode "Lumpy Rutherford" on January 24, 1958. Lumpy was one of Wally's friends and the son of Fred Rutherford, who worked with Ward. Bank appeared in 50 episodes of the series during the six season run. He reprised his role in the sequel series, Still the Beaver/The New Leave it to Beaver, on The Disney Channel from 1985-1986 and WTBS from 1986-1989. In 1997, he had a cameo as Frank in the Leave it to Beaver film.

His other television guest appearances included The Ford Television Theatre, Father Knows Best, Cimarron City, Westinghouse Playhouse, 87th Precinct and Bachelor Father. He was also cast as Archie Andrews in the 1962 unsold pilot, Archie. In 1983, he appeared on Family Feud and Hollywood Squares. His film credits included The Story of Will Rogers as a young Will Rogers in 1952 and the 1983 TV movie High School U.S.A.. After his acting career ended, he became a stock-and-bond broker in Los Angeles. His autobiography, Call Me Lumpy: My Leave it to Beaver Days and Other Wild Hollywood Life, was released in 1997.

Bank is survived by his wife, Rebecca; daughters Julie Bank, Kelly Lightner, Michelle Randall and Joanne Littman; and five grandchildren. Lumpy was a very funny and memorable character. He was a bit of a bully in his early appearances, but he eventually became more friendly in later episodes. It was always hilarious how he called his father his "Daddy". He was a lovable big oaf. Mr. Bank will be greatly missed.

As we mentioned last week, Leave it to Beaver is moving to MeTV beginning Monday, May 6. It will air weekdays at 9:00am & 9:30am ET. Antenna TV currently airs the series. We have the Esquire Network launch schedule for you today. The network currently known as G4 (owned by NBC Universal), will re-brand and re-launch as Esquire Network next week (April 22), as we mentioned. The network will start the new schedule at 12 noon ET on Monday, April 22 with The A-Team starring Mr. T! The '80s action drama will air as a block to launch the network from 12-6pm (and will air every Monday after that from 1-5pm). A special airing of the Will Ferrell movie Semi-Pro will follow at 6pm leading into the Parks & Recreation block from 8-10pm. Parks & Recreation will air every Monday from 8-10pm leading into the short-lived comedy Party Down from 10-11pm. Both comedies will encore the next afternoon, on Tuesdays from 3-6pm with Party Down starting it off this time. In primetime on Tuesdays, original series Knife Life and The Getaway will air from 9-11pm.

On Wednesday, April 24, more acquisitions will launch. First up, '80s Tom Selleck drama Magnum P.I. will air every Wednesday from 1pm-5pm (but on this day it will be longer from 12-5pm). Magnum also will still air on the NBC-owned mutlticast digital station Cozi TV. The Tom Selleck drama will lead into reruns of USA Network series Burn Notice at 5pm & 6pm. The series will air weekdays at 5pm & 6pm (and an encore at 11pm & 12am in late night). Also launching April 24, are a week later airings of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon at 7pm, as we mentioned. It will also air weekdays and air at 7pm with a next day encore at 12 noon. Movies will air in primetime on Wednesdays, with Shutter Island airing on April 24. As mentioned Burn Notice will air in late night at 11pm & 12am, leading into another off-network buy with the '90s drama New York Undercover. That series will air weeknights at 1am. It will also continue to air on Centric, so this is a shared deal between Esquire and Centric. On Thursdays, Parks & Recreation will encore two of its Monday airings and air 1-2pm and again from 8-9pm, as it will be good promotion for its first-run NBC airings at 9:30pm. The Wednesday primetime movie will encore on Thursday afternoons leading into Burn Notice and Fallon. In primetime on Thursdays, as mentioned Parks will air 8-9pm leading into encores The Getaway and Knife Life from 9-11pm. On to Fridays, we have another classic '80s drama airing from 1-5pm, this time it is Airwolf! In primetime, reruns of USA Network series Psych will air Fridays from 8-11pm. Mornings (9:30am-12am) and late nights (2am-4:30am) will continue to be Cops every weekday, as it was on G4.

On to weekends, we have a lot of encores and movies. Of note, Parks & Recreation will encore its Monday airings once again, this time Sundays 7-9pm leading into encore of Party Down from 9-10pm. Anyway, it's good to see The A-Team, Magnum P.I. and Airwolf join this network. Hopefully we see more classic '80s series join the line-up. As of now Knight Rider and Quantum Leap will not be on Esquire, as they have been airing on G4. Stay with us for continued updates on Esquire Network and for any scheduling updates.

Up next, TVGN announced that it will become the exclusive basic cable home for the #1 daytime soap, The Young & The Restless (Y&R). The acquisition of the top-rated daytime franchise from Sony Pictures Television marks the first TVGN programming announcement as part of the new CBS Corporation/Lionsgate partnership. Beginning this summer, Y&R will move from SOAPnet, where it has already been a basic cable ratings success, to TVGN, keeping the 7:00 PM, ET/PT time slot where it has built a loyal fan base, and will appear day-and-date with its broadcast on the CBS Television Network. One of the most popular franchises in daytime television history, Y&R recently celebrated 40 years on the air on CBS, where it has dominated the ratings in daytime. TVGN recently announced that is has changed its name from TV Guide Network to just TVGN. Currently, the TVGN line-up consists of reruns from 9am-8pm will series like Ugly Betty, Cybill, Designing Women, Early Edition and Who's the Boss? It is unclear what will happen now that CBS has partnered with Lionsgate to buy the network. There is speculation that same-day reruns of Entertainment Tonight, OMG! Insider and Inside Edition could pop-up on the network. Or perhaps CBS will also delve into the CBS Paramount library and air reruns of classic sitcoms from their library. It's too early to tell, but we will keep you up to date...for now you can still continue to enjoy the current slate of sitcoms/dramas. Stay with us.

• The Simpsons (Fox) - A repeat episode at 8 did 3.24 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week.
• The Cleveland Show (Fox) 2 airings - Its normal time of 7:30pm was a repeat and did 1.99 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week. There was an all-new episode at 9:30pm following repeats that did 3.38 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, which lost steam from its lead-in, which was a repeat.
• Bob's Burgers (Fox) - The 8:30 airing was a repeat and did 2.99 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week and held all of is lead-in's ratings. A repeat at 7pm did only 1.74 million and just a 0.7 18-49 rating, but up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week.
• Family Guy (Fox) - A repeat at 9 did 3.58 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which was up four tenths in 18-49 week-to-week.
• American Dad! (Fox) - preempted.

• How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - preempted.
• Rules of Engagement (CBS) - preempted
• 2 Broke Girls (CBS) - An encore episode at a special time of 8pm ET did 5.29 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, which was a tad better than its 9pm repeat the previous week. 
• The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A special repeat at 8:30pm ET did 6.6 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating. Such rewatchability for this show.
• Mike & Molly (CBS) - preempted.

• New Girl (Fox) - A new episode did 4.09 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is decent but could be better for this show. It skews so young, though.
• The Mindy Project (Fox) - A new episode did 2.66 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, which is back up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week when its lead-in was a repeat.

• The Middle (ABC) - A new airing at 8 did 7.55 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, which is on par in 18-49 with previous week. Solid as always.
• Suburgatory (ABC) - A new episode at 8:30pm did 5.6 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week as well. A great 2-episode finale is this week!
• Modern Family (ABC) - A new episode at 9 did 10.38 million and a 3.8 18-49 rating, which is down four tenths in 18-49 from previous week but still easily #1 for the night.
• How To Live with Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life) (ABC) - A new episode at 9:30pm did 7.33 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, which is also down four tenths in 18-49 from previous week. The best episode yet is this Wednesday: Academy Awards Party!

• The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A repeat posted 11.44 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, which is above normal for a repeat airing.
• Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A repeat episode followed with 8.29 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, which is solid for a repeat.
• Community (NBC) - A new episode did just 2.84 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating and it was up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. I don't think NBC will bring it back. Perhaps Comedy Central?
• Parks & Recreation (NBC) - A new episode built from its lead-in again with 3.15 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week.
• The Office (NBC) - A new airing at 9 did just 3.83 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week but still low.
• Go On (NBC) - The season finale did only 2.67 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, which is on par in 18-49 with previous week but still way too low. Not a good sign.

• Happy Endings (ABC) 2 airings - Week three in this hour did a prelim 2.76 million and a prelim 0.8 18-49 rating at 8, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week's prelim. The second airing at 8:30 did a prelim 2.10 million and a prelim 0.6 18-49 rating, down four tenths in 18-49 from previous week's prelim. Nielsen is so screwy.

Yesterday we gave you MeTV Network's spring schedule, now we have Antenna TV's spring 2013 schedule. As we mentioned, Leave it to Beaver, Dragnet and Adam-12 are leaving Antenna TV, as their rights have expired and gone to MeTV. The Antenna TV Spring 2013 schedule will begin on Monday, April 29 (a full week before MeTV's spring schedule) and will have some returning series from hiatus to fill the void of those three major shows leaving. The Nanny and Married...with Children will both return to Antenna TV from hiatus and will air Mon-Thurs, with The Nanny airing 8-9pm ET and Married...with Children from 11pm-12am ET. The Nanny will replace All in the Family in the 8pm hour, as All in the Family is leaving the daily schedule but will move to the Wednesday primetime sitcom block from 9-11pm instead of a second night of Diff'rent Strokes. Not to worry fans of Diff'rent Strokes, the sitcom will still air Monday nights from 9-11pm (and also Sundays 10-11pm). Married will replace one of the many Leave it to Beaver hours. Returning to the weekday morning/afternoon line-up will be McHale's Navy, Bachelor Father and Hazel, as three hours were needed since Beaver, Dragnet and Adam-12 were heavily part of the daytime schedule. The late afternoon/evening line-up will remain unchanged from 4pm-8pm, which includes hours of Partridge Family, Good Times, Sanford & Son and Maude. Late nights will remain unchanged from 12am on, which includes Alfred Hitchcock Presents at 12 midnight.

Friday nights will have a return to the black & white sitcom block. From 8pm-12am, classic '50s/'60s sitcoms will air: Dennis the Menace, Father Knows Best, McHale's Navy and the return of The Three Stooges to the line-up. Onto weekends, Circus Boy will be leaving the schedule, as a second morning of Rin Tin Tin will be added. McHale's Navy will also get some weekend action from 1-2pm, while more It Takes a Thief will be added to fill the void of Adam-12 and Dragnet. Also leaving weekends will be S.W.A.T. and Here Come the Brides, while Suspense Theatre gets more airtime. The Sunday night sitcom block of '70s/'80s series will remain unchanged from 8pm-12am with Barney Miller, Maude, Diff'rent Strokes and Benson. That about sums up the schedule, but be sure to view the full schedule below. There are no new shows in the line-up, but plenty of time changes and shows returning from hiatus. Some new additions will probably not be added until the fall, so stay with us for that.

NBC's freshman comedy starring Matthew Perry airs again on a special night Thursday at 9:30pm and we have just watched the next episode that air tonight (April 11). It's the season finale! In the episode airing tonight, "Urn-ed Run," Ryan, (Matthew Perry) in the continuing effort to recover after the loss of his wife, Janie, (Christine Woods) is presented with a plan "masterminded" by Mr. K (Brett Gelman) and Anne (Julie White) to help force Ryan to lay his wife's ashes to rest, but the plan goes awry. Meanwhile, the group grumbles they're not getting anything out of their sessions and blame Lauren (Laura Benanti) to such an extent that Yolanda (Suzy Nakamura) and Sonia (Sarah Baker) make up a big problem for her to fix. After the failure of both plans, the group comes together with new perspectives.

Go On is a perfectly capable sitcom. Unlike its former timeslot partner The New Normal, it has comfortably slipped into a comic rhythmic that utilizes its talented cast in the best way possible. Each episode is good for a few laughs, and the show's ensemble has developed really nicely, reaching that magical point where sometimes it's just fun to watch these people bounce off of each other. The show's major problem, though - and the problem that keeps it from being a truly great sitcom on par with some of NBC's other flagship comedies - is that it has completely dropped the ball on its dark, interesting premise of a widower trying to move on and finding comfort in a support group. Occasionally, Go On will show us a glimpse of its serious side, but it's always covered in several layers of silly sitcom antics, which significantly takes away from the impact that the show wants it to have.



All of that is all too evident in tonight's finale, which has a potentially thoughtful storyline about Ryan finally spreading his wife's ashes but goes through several worn-out sitcom tropes to get to an ending that's somewhat emotional, but isn't bold enough to truly delve into the darkness that the material requires. It doesn't help that the silly sitcom scenarios aren't particularly funny and don't seem to have a lot of effort put into them - the show's humor works much better with one-liners and witty banter. It often feels like Go On wants to be both ambitious & dark and broad & accessible, and it just isn't able to strike that balance. Still, there's enough that works here to make Go On's finale a fairly entertaining half-hour, and maybe if the show gets a second season (it's squarely on the bubble right now), it'll learn to work with its various elements. But right now, it feels like an okay show that could be something more. C+
