MeTV January 2020 Schedule with The Waltons, Adam-12; Brockmire Final Season Announced by IFC

The MeTV Network will welcome one of television's most beloved families to its daytime lineup this January. The Waltons will air weekdays, premiering on Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at 12PM | 11C. Additionally, two classic cop dramas will join the weekday schedule when Adam-12 and Dragnet report for duty starting New Year's Day, with Adam-12 weekdays at 5:00pm & 5:30pm and Dragnet in the mornings at 5:30am & 6am. Other weekday changes are I Love Lucy at 6:30am and In the Heat of the Night now at 11am. That's not all! Sunday night has a new look, beginning with the early 90-minute episodes of Columbo (1971–1978) at 8PM | 7C. That leads into an all-new season of Collector's Call at 9:30PM | 8:30C (premiering January 12). Host Lisa Whelchel (The Facts of Life) returns to uncover even more stunning collections — and some surprising guest stars from The Brady Bunch, the Winter Olympics and beyond! Then, MeTV is pairing up The Flintstones with The Honeymooners — the sitcom that inspired the cartoon — at 10PM & 10:30PM. You can still catch The Flintstones weekdays 6-7P and Sundays 10A-12N. View the full MeTV Network Winter 2020 schedule.

IFC announced that the fourth and final season of its critically-acclaimed series Brockmire starring Hank Azaria will premiere in March 2020. Returning for the series' final season are Amanda Peet, Tyrel Jackson Williams and Katie Finneran. Additionally, Reina Hardesty (The Flash) has joined the series' line-up for the final eight episodes. Brockmire Seasons 1-3 are currently available to watch on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon and XBOX. Season 1 and 2 are also available on Hulu, with Season 3 joining Wednesday, January 1, 2020.
Brockmire follows Jim Brockmire (Azaria), a famed major league baseball announcer who suffered a notorious public breakdown after stumbling upon his wife's (Finneran) infidelity – a breakdown so bad that "Brutal Brockmire" became a viral internet meme. Season 1 began a decade later, as Brockmire looked to reclaim his career and reputation by calling games for the Morristown Frackers, an underdog minor league baseball team. Despite finding happiness in Morristown alongside his girlfriend/team owner Jules (Peet), Season 2 began with a newly-single Brockmire calling games in New Orleans and living with his co-dependent friend Charles (Williams)...while fully indulging in the city's booze-riddled sins. When a drug-fueled night of partying with a stranger ends with a near-death experience, Brockmire realizes it's time to get sober once and for all. Season 3 took place one year after a stint in rehab, with Brockmire doing play-by-play in the radio booth for the major leagues in central Florida while maintaining his brazen and narcissistic tendencies, despite actually being on the wagon.

Antenna TV Spring 2013 Schedule; Episodic Review: Go On "Urn-ed Run" - Season Finale - Airing Tonight on NBC
Yesterday we gave you MeTV Network's spring schedule, now we have Antenna TV's spring 2013 schedule. As we mentioned, Leave it to Beaver, Dragnet and Adam-12 are leaving Antenna TV, as their rights have expired and gone to MeTV. The Antenna TV Spring 2013 schedule will begin on Monday, April 29 (a full week before MeTV's spring schedule) and will have some returning series from hiatus to fill the void of those three major shows leaving. The Nanny and Married...with Children will both return to Antenna TV from hiatus and will air Mon-Thurs, with The Nanny airing 8-9pm ET and Married...with Children from 11pm-12am ET. The Nanny will replace All in the Family in the 8pm hour, as All in the Family is leaving the daily schedule but will move to the Wednesday primetime sitcom block from 9-11pm instead of a second night of Diff'rent Strokes. Not to worry fans of Diff'rent Strokes, the sitcom will still air Monday nights from 9-11pm (and also Sundays 10-11pm). Married will replace one of the many Leave it to Beaver hours. Returning to the weekday morning/afternoon line-up will be McHale's Navy, Bachelor Father and Hazel, as three hours were needed since Beaver, Dragnet and Adam-12 were heavily part of the daytime schedule. The late afternoon/evening line-up will remain unchanged from 4pm-8pm, which includes hours of Partridge Family, Good Times, Sanford & Son and Maude. Late nights will remain unchanged from 12am on, which includes Alfred Hitchcock Presents at 12 midnight.
Friday nights will have a return to the black & white sitcom block. From 8pm-12am, classic '50s/'60s sitcoms will air: Dennis the Menace, Father Knows Best, McHale's Navy and the return of The Three Stooges to the line-up. Onto weekends, Circus Boy will be leaving the schedule, as a second morning of Rin Tin Tin will be added. McHale's Navy will also get some weekend action from 1-2pm, while more It Takes a Thief will be added to fill the void of Adam-12 and Dragnet. Also leaving weekends will be S.W.A.T. and Here Come the Brides, while Suspense Theatre gets more airtime. The Sunday night sitcom block of '70s/'80s series will remain unchanged from 8pm-12am with Barney Miller, Maude, Diff'rent Strokes and Benson. That about sums up the schedule, but be sure to view the full schedule below. There are no new shows in the line-up, but plenty of time changes and shows returning from hiatus. Some new additions will probably not be added until the fall, so stay with us for that.
View the Antenna TV Spring 2013 schedule, which begins April 29. Stay with us for continued updates as usual.
On the next...Go On:

NBC's freshman comedy starring Matthew Perry airs again on a special night Thursday at 9:30pm and we have just watched the next episode that air tonight (April 11). It's the season finale! In the episode airing tonight, "Urn-ed Run," Ryan, (Matthew Perry) in the continuing effort to recover after the loss of his wife, Janie, (Christine Woods) is presented with a plan "masterminded" by Mr. K (Brett Gelman) and Anne (Julie White) to help force Ryan to lay his wife's ashes to rest, but the plan goes awry. Meanwhile, the group grumbles they're not getting anything out of their sessions and blame Lauren (Laura Benanti) to such an extent that Yolanda (Suzy Nakamura) and Sonia (Sarah Baker) make up a big problem for her to fix. After the failure of both plans, the group comes together with new perspectives.
Go On is a perfectly capable sitcom. Unlike its former timeslot partner The New Normal, it has comfortably slipped into a comic rhythmic that utilizes its talented cast in the best way possible. Each episode is good for a few laughs, and the show's ensemble has developed really nicely, reaching that magical point where sometimes it's just fun to watch these people bounce off of each other. The show's major problem, though - and the problem that keeps it from being a truly great sitcom on par with some of NBC's other flagship comedies - is that it has completely dropped the ball on its dark, interesting premise of a widower trying to move on and finding comfort in a support group. Occasionally, Go On will show us a glimpse of its serious side, but it's always covered in several layers of silly sitcom antics, which significantly takes away from the impact that the show wants it to have.
All of that is all too evident in tonight's finale, which has a potentially thoughtful storyline about Ryan finally spreading his wife's ashes but goes through several worn-out sitcom tropes to get to an ending that's somewhat emotional, but isn't bold enough to truly delve into the darkness that the material requires. It doesn't help that the silly sitcom scenarios aren't particularly funny and don't seem to have a lot of effort put into them - the show's humor works much better with one-liners and witty banter. It often feels like Go On wants to be both ambitious & dark and broad & accessible, and it just isn't able to strike that balance. Still, there's enough that works here to make Go On's finale a fairly entertaining half-hour, and maybe if the show gets a second season (it's squarely on the bubble right now), it'll learn to work with its various elements. But right now, it feels like an okay show that could be something more. C+

MeTV Network Spring 2013 Schedule with Beaver, Dragnet, Adam-12; TBS Premieres Season 2 of Sullivan & Son this June
As announced back in 2011, MeTV Network will get rights to many series from NBCUniversal Television Distribution. Some series have already started airing but three more are coming this spring and are "new to Me." Leave it to Beaver, Dragnet and Adam-12 will make their way from Antenna TV to MeTV effective Monday, May 6, part of their "It's New To Me" line-up! Both series will be leaving Antenna TV later this month, as Antenna TV starts a new schedule on April 29 (which we will post shortly, so stay tuned). On MeTV, Leave it to Beaver will air weekdays at 9:00am & 9:30am ET, replacing Daniel Boone. The other two additions will be paired in the 4pm hour with Dragnet at 4pm ET and Adam-12 at 4:30pm ET, replacing The Wild Wild West. Both series will lead-into similar style series Emergency! at 5pm, which was already on the schedule. That's it, no other schedule changes will be made. This means The Wild Wild West and Daniel Boone will be off the line-up this spring. Stay with us for continued updates on the MeTV schedule and we will give you Antenna TV's spring schedule later this week, which will obviously not have these three shows anymore.
In more MeTV news, his weekend, MeTV will pay tribute to the beloved actress and singer, Annette Funicello. On Sunday, April 14, from 1pm-3pm, Eastern/Pacific, MeTV will air select episodes of Make Room For Daddy. Before she was queen of the beach, she was Danny Thomas' foreign exchange student on Make Room for Daddy. "A Tribute To Annette Funicello" will feature episodes with Annette Funicello in her role as foreign exchange student, Gina Minelli. Sunday's tribute includes several of her classic TV appearances on the sitcom. This tribute carries on the MeTV tradition of paying homage to the lives and careers of classic TV stars. Episodes airing are "Gina From Italy," "Gina's First Date," "Frankie Laine Sings for Gina," and "Gina for President." Make Room for Daddy regularly airs on MeTV every weekday mornings at 5:30am ET.
TBS has announced a premiere date for season two of original sitcom Sullivan & Son. The sitcom was ordered for a 10-episode second season after finishing its first season last summer, which also had 10 episodes. Sullivan & Son will have its season premiere on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 10pm and will continue to air Thursdays at 10, like last summer. The sitcom will premiere a week after the season finale of fellow original sitcom Men at Work, which will wrap up its 10-episode second season on June 6. Men at Work had its season premiere last Thursday (April 4). In other TBS comedy news, Cougar Town had its one-hour season finale last night (April 9). Back to Sullivan & Son, series star Steve Byrne suffered an injury to his face recently that led his jaw being wired shut for six weeks. So a shutdown of production on Season 2 for the series was ordered until June, but TBS still plans on premiering the sitcom on June 13 as some of the episodes have already taped. TBS's Sullivan & Son stars Steve Byrne as a corporate attorney who finds new life behind the bar when he leaves his Manhattan lifestyle and moves to Pittsburgh to take over his parents' pub. Byrne is joined by a stellar ensemble cast that includes Christine Ebersole, Brian Doyle-Murray, Jodi Long, Valerie Azlynn, Vivian Bang, Owen Benjamin and Dan Lauria. Digital Digest: Adam-12 - The Final Season DVD Review
DIGITAL NEWS
News on the DVD front has been excruciatingly slow this week, but there was one announcement from Lionsgate regarding a new release of the series House of Payne. House of Payne - Volume Nine, which has been "on again, off again" on the schedule, is now "on again" with a scheduled release date set for June 19. Will this change again? We don't know, but hopefully, for the sake of fans, this day will be the actual release date.
Sony is continuing their manufacture-on-demand DVDs (of course, don't forget about Tuesday's releases of Benson - The Complete Second Season and Brothers - The Complete Series) with the series 10 Items or Less. On May 1, they will be releasing 10 Items or Less - The Complete Second Season, but only as a manufacture-on-demand product. It isn't available to pre-order just yet, but you can read more about the release here.
UPCOMING WEEK PREVIEW
Tuesday (April 2) has several DVD releases to offer. Shout! Factory continues their releases of Designing Women with their release of Designing Women - The Complete Sixth Season. You can read our review of this set here. CBS Home Entertainment brings an older (and somewhat forgotten) sitcom to DVD for the first time with their release of Bob - The Complete Series. You can read our review here. If you are looking for new releases of Carsey-Werner series from Mill Creek, they have (literally) tons of them, with 3rd Rock from the Sun - The Complete Season Three, 3rd Rock from the Sun - The Complete Season Four, Roseanne - The Complete Third Season, Roseanne - The Complete Fourth Season, That '70s Show - Season Three, and That '70s Show - Season Four. We have not received these yet for review, but while we are mentioning these, we should mention that we have received a review copy of That '70s Show - Season One (Blu-ray), which was released a little over a week ago, and we will have a review of that set soon (as well as these new releases for Tuesday). If you're in the mood for manufacture-on-demand products, Sony brings some new sitcoms to DVD through those means on Tuesday with their release of Benson - The Complete Second Season and Brothers - The Complete Series. There certainly is something for everybody on Tuesday!

It's time to ride along with Officer Reed (Kent McCord) and Malloy (Martin Milner) one last time with Shout! Factory's release of the seventh season of the iconic police drama Adam-12, with Adam-12 - The Final Season. The final 24 episodes of the classic series, from the 1974 to 1975 season. A lot has changed for these officers since the first season, but they're still out there helping the citizens of Los Angeles, and also helping to prevent crime.
The season begins with the two-part episode "Camp," where a boy seeks independence from his mother (and in turn finds himself in trouble with the law). In "Team Work," Malloy and Reed get suspicious after seeing the same witness and tow truck driver at two different accident scenes. A gang is robbing pizza delivery boys in "Roll Call." In "Suspect Number One," Malloy gets a request from an ex-con who just wants to go back to prison. A holdup goes wrong, leaving two robbers on the roof of a shopping center, in "Point of View."
In "Lady Beware," Malloy and Reed are on the search for a rapist of teen girls. Reed and Malloy are on the hunt for a missing young girl in "Excessive Force." In "Alcohol," the latest arrest by Reed and Malloy is a happy drunk who seems to be entertaining. Reed has trouble getting a credit card in "Credit Risk." It is a happy holiday for everybody, except for Reed and Malloy, in "Christmas." Malloy encounters a young man using the machines at a laundromat to dry marijuana in "Pot Shot."
Reed and Malloy are following the path of a car theft ring in "Grand Theft Auto." In "Victim of the Crime," Reed gets blamed when a thief escapes from a shop. A new recruit has a stuttering problem in "Pressure Point," and it could have more serious problems than expected when he tries to hide it. Reed and Malloy take their significant others on a double date in "Ladies' Night." In "Citizen With a Gun," a homeowner decides to take advantage of his right to own a gun to protect himself, but owning that gun may have consequences when he comes close to accidentally shooting a police officer. Reed and Malloy are after a horse thief in "Follow Up."
Reed and Malloy have to find a man who may be planning to kill himself in "Suicide." In "Operation Action," Malloy is missing, and Reed is going to do whatever it takes to find out where he is. A new recruit is taking serious risks to apprehend suspects in "Gus Corbin." In "Dana Hall," a female officer is out to prove that she can do anything that a man can do on the job. The series ends with the two-part final episode (one of the few police dramas of the era to actually have a proper final episode), "Something Worth Dying For," where Reed and Malloy may be going their separate ways after some changes.
It appears that the episodes on the set are unedited. Runtimes are as follows:
Disc 1:
1. "Camp (Part 1)" (24:56)
2. "Camp (Part 2)" (24:55)
3. "Team Work" (24:31)
4. "Roll Call" (24:30)
5. "Suspect Number One" (24:30)
6. "Point of View" (24:31)
Disc 2:
7. "Lady Beware" (25:11)
8. "Excessive Force" (24:27)
9. "Alcohol" (24:55)
10. "Credit Risk" (24:54)
11. "Christmas" (25:10)
12. "Pot Shot" (24:29)
Disc 3:
13. "Grand Theft Auto" (25:11)
14. "Victim of the Crime" (25:08)
15. "Ladies' Night" (25:30)
16. "Pressure Point" (24:31)
17. "Citizen with a Gun" (25:09)
18. "Follow Up" (24:31)
Disc 4:
19. "Suicide" (24:55)
20. "Operation Action" (25:26)
21. "Gus Corbin" (25:23)
22. "Dana Hall" (25:25)
23. "Something Worth Dying For (Part 1)" (25:29)
24. "Something Worth Dying For (Part 2)" (25:29)
The DVD set is packaged just like the sixth season, with the DVDs in a standard Viva case. To recap all of it, season one was released in a huge box with two standard Amaray cases (only two discs, but both were double-sided), seasons 2-5 were released in slimcases, and the final two seasons (6 and 7) have been released in Viva cases. The cover has a photo of Reed and Malloy, in front of what (I think) is LAPD headquarters, though I don't know that is what it is for certain. On the back, there is a brief description of the season, two photos from the series, and for some reason, quite a bit of blank space... but it isn't a huge deal. Inside the case, there are four discs, each containing six episodes. The disc artwork contains a different black and white photo on each disc. Complete episode descriptions and original airdates are printed inside the case. However, there are some issues with the episode guide inside the case, as it is plagued with titles which I believe are wrong, improperly abbreviated, misspelled, and some of the episodes are even listed in the wrong order. The episodes as listed on the menu appear to be the most "correct," but certainly, the episode guide inside the case will give you an idea of what is on each disc.
Not one thing has changed about the menus since the previous season. The main menu is designed like a police radio, with buttons for Play All and Episodes. The theme song plays in the background on the main menu. Upon selecting Episodes, you get another menu which lists the episodes. Each episode plays immediately upon selecting it. Chapters are placed throughout each episode.
The video and audio quality of the set is, generally speaking, excellent. You'll find a bit of grain and debris here and there, but even that is significantly lessened from the previous releases. I don't think anybody will be the slightest bit disappointed with the video quality. The audio is great too, and generally loud and clear. Unfortunately, the episodes are not closed-captioned.
The set contains no special features at all. It would have been nice to have included some sort of interview retrospective or something along those lines since, after all, this is the final season of the series.
We don't get to say this too much lately, because most series have either been completed long ago or were just abandoned early on, but we have finally seen this series completed on DVD! It took a long time, and there were plenty of bumps along the road (particularly with Universal giving up on the series after just one season), but sure enough, we have all of the episodes on DVD now, and the releases really haven't had any major issues of concern, although it would be nice to see a re-release of the first season (which Universal did a terrible job with, primarily by using double-sided discs which had a very high failure rate). I think that these season sets really do close the book on this series, because a complete series set probably couldn't be much of an improvement on what is here, and this series is not really appropriate to release on Blu-ray. So, if you are a fan of this series, or just a fan of police dramas in general, you should pick up these DVDs, all seven seasons. It doesn't matter which season you start with. Basically, they are all equally enjoyable.

CLICK OF THE WEEK
The Official Kent McCord Home Page - Lately, our Click of the Week has often been closely related to upcoming DVD releases or DVDs which we have recently reviewed, and we are doing this yet again today, sort of. But instead of just choosing a website about Adam-12 (there is at least decent one out there which we will likely feature at a later date), we instead chose to feature the official website of Kent McCord, one of the stars of the classic series.
The website is much like many other celebrity websites out there, although naturally, it includes more of a full account of McCord's early life all the way up through the present day, giving a full picture of his life. But my favorite part of the website is the wealth of first-hand artifacts which he provides from his career. There are plenty of photos and memorabilia featured from Adam-12, of course, but you'll also find a page about his time on the series Galactica 1980. There are also many photo memories available on the site from his appearances on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. He even has a full page, complete with photos and an article, dedicated to a rare 1989 TNN made-for-TV movie Nashville Beat, which was special because in the movie, he played a cop partnered with another cop played by Martin Milner (I've never seen the movie, but I'm still confident that he always belonged in Los Angeles anyway). There is also a series of interesting correspondence which he has had with those he has worked with over the years. All of this isn't to say that this is a one-stop shop for everything that you need to know about Kent McCord or Adam-12, but you will certainly find a lot of interesting and unique artifacts on this website, all of which make it worthy of being Click of the Week.
That's it for this week. Until next time, keep it digital!

Digital Digest: Surprise DVD Announcements; Adam-12 - Season Six DVD Review; Heathcliff - Season One, Volume One DVD Review
DIGITAL NEWS
News this week hasn't been very heavy, but the news that has been floating around this week brings big things that fans have been waiting to see. The first big surprise comes from Sony. The studio has released virtually no new releases of classic TV series in recent years, and some of their older releases are starting to go out of print even. But as TVShowsOnDVD.com announced earlier this week, there is in fact something on the way for April 2, and it will be a pleasant surprise for many. On April 2, look for the second season of the classic Soap spinoff, Benson. However, the release won't be a traditional release, but rather a manufacture-on-demand release, available exclusively from Amazon.com CreateSpace and Warner Archive. It isn't available to pre-order yet, but we'll bring you more details when we know them.
The other big surprise comes from Image, releasing a rare '80s series that most people probably don't even remember... but it certainly existed, and is fondly remembered by fans! On June 5, look for the release of Rags to Riches - The Complete Series. It isn't clear yet whether or not all of the original music will be included. After all, this was a very music intensive series. But once we know the answer to this, we'll let you know.
That isn't Image's only release for June 5, though. On the same day, they will also be releasing a pair of releases of the classic series The Twilight Zone on Blu-ray Disc, including The Twilight Zone - The Complete Definitive Series and Twilight Zone - Fan Favorites. Presumably, the complete series release will have all of the content that is already on the individual season releases, but this will offer fans the opportunity to own the entire series at a slightly lower value price.
MPI appears to be making a bit more progress for their release of the third season of My Favorite Martian, although no date has been set just yet. However, the studio's upcoming release of My Living Doll - The Official Collection, Volume 1 (which we will have be reviewing very soon) has a trailer for the release of the final season of the classic series, even including the packaging artwork. Typically, once MPI gets this far along, it means a release will follow very shortly, but of course, an exact date hasn't been given just yet. We'll certainly be updating fans on this much anticipated release, though.
Last week, we told you about The Paley Center for Media annual PaleyFest, which began yesterday and includes events which are streaming online. There has been a slight change in the schedule, however, and since we brought you the news of this event last week, we thought that we should mention this. On Tuesday, March 6 at 10:00 PM, the cast and crew from the NBC series The Office was slated to take part in one of the panel events. However, due to complications in the production schedule, this event has been canceled. There will be another event taking place at the same time, though, that will be an appropriate substitute for fans of the NBC Thursday night lineup. On Tuesday, at 10:00 PM ET, fans will be able to see a panel discussion from the cast and crew of the NBC series Parks and Recreation. To clarify, here is the schedule for the entire (revised) schedule.
Saturday, March 3 - Community (10:00 PM)
Sunday, March 4 - Once Upon a Time (4:00 PM)
Monday, March 5 - New Girl (10:00 PM)
Tuesday, March 6 - Parks and Recreation (changed from The Office) (10:00 PM)
Wednesday, March 7 - Sons of Anarchy (4:00 PM)
Thursday, March 8 - Bones (8:00 PM)
Friday, March 9 - Castle (4:00 PM)
Saturday, March 10 - Vampire Diaries (4:00 PM)
Sunday, March 11 - Revenge (10:00 AM)
Monday, March 12 - Two and a Half Men (4:00 PM)
Tuesday, March 13 - Mad Men (8:00 PM)
Wednesday, March 14 - Modern Family (4:00 PM)
UPCOMING WEEK PREVIEW
Tuesday (March 6) brings one truly new-to-DVD release, with the release of the TV Land sitcom Happily Divorced - Season One. There are several other releases on Tuesday as well from CBS Home Entertainment, but all of them are "best of" Fan Favorites releases of episodes that have already been released. Among these are The Honeymooners (Classic 39 Episodes) (our review), Cheers (our review), Frasier (our review), Hogan's Heroes (our review), The Odd Couple (our review), and Happy Days (our review).
BLOG FEATURE REVIEW
Blog DVD Review: Adam-12 - Season Six (Shout! Factory, $34.93)
by skees53
Note: This release was released in January, but our review at the time was delayed at the time because we received a defective copy which was missing a disc. We deeply appreciate Shout! Factory for quickly rectifying this situation by sending a replacement copy.
Officers Reed (Kent McCord) and Malloy (Martin Milner) are back on the beat once again for another season of Adam-12 on DVD. The sixth season, the next-to-last, brings fans 24 more beat-blazing and action packed episodes of the iconic Jack Webb series from the '70s to DVD. With stories based upon real cases in and around the city of Los Angeles (as was the case for Webb's other creations), the series follows a veteran officer and a rookie as they cruise the streets of Los Angeles, never knowing what their next call will be and how they'll have to respond.
One slight change this season is that many episodes focus on a single specific division, rather than just being "on the streets" where many different things happen. The season begins with "Harbor Division," where Reed and Malloy work on the harbor. Reed and Malloy have to track thieves by horseback in "Foothill Division." In "Venice Division," Reed and Malloy have to deal with a woman parading around the beach in the nude. Reed and Malloy are challenged by a teenage robber in "Hot Shot." In "Van Nuys Division," the guys have to deal with the crash of a plane. The officers must deal with a know-it-all trainee in "Training Division." Johnny Whitaker guest stars in "Northeast Division," where he plays a lonely boy in a new neighborhood who is frightening his neighbors.
A spilled bottle of perfume in the squad car signals a bad day in "The Sweet Smell." A routine visit to the bank to make a car loan payment becomes more than Reed anticipates in "Trouble in the Bank." In "North Hollywood Division," Malloy is the subject of a magazine article written by his own partner. Reed gets desk duty while Malloy temporarily takes on a new partner in "Taking it Easy." A new police cruiser gets hit in the pursuit of a purse-snatcher in "Krash." In "Routine Patrol," four youths steal a car that is loaded with ammunition, and go on a robbery and shooting spree. Reed and Malloy take on the sky patrol duties in the two-part episode "Skywatch." Reed and Malloy have airport duty in the pre-TSA days in "L.A. International." The season ends with "A Clinic on 18th Street," where a mysterious death turns into a medical fraud investigation.
It appears that the episodes on the set are unedited. Runtimes are as follows:
Disc 1:
1. "Harbor Division" (24:49)
2. "Rampart Division" (24:27)
3. "Foothill Division" (24:30)
4. "West Valley Division" (24:29)
5. "Venice Division" (24:27)
6. "Hot Shot" (24:29)
Disc 2:
7. "Van Nuys Division" (24:28)
8. "Training Division" (24:27)
9. "Capture" (24:29)
10. "Hollywood Division" (24:28)
11. "Northeast Division" (24:28)
12. "If the Shoe Fits" (24:31)
Disc 3:
13. "Southwest Division" (24:28)
14. "The Sweet Smell" (24:31)
15. "Trouble in the Bank" (24:32)
16. "North Hollywood Division" (24:28)
17. "Taking it Easy" (24:29)
18. "Krash" (24:29)
Disc 4:
19. "Routine Patrol" (24:29)
20. "Sunburn" (24:32)
21. "Skywatch (Part 1)" (24:29)
22. "Skywatch (Part 2)" (24:30)
23. "L.A. International" (24:29)
24. "A Clinic on 18th Street" (24:30)
The previous releases of the series have been in slimcases, but like most other studios, Shout! Factory has been transitioning all of their releases to Viva cases, and this set uses just that. On the cover, there is a photo of Reed and Malloy in front of a bridge, with a few episode snapshots and a description of the season on the back (which mentions 23 episodes on the set, although there are technically 24 with the two-part episode on Disc 4). Luckily, though, episode descriptions have not been lost with this release. A complete listing of all episodes, along with descriptions and original airdates, are printed inside the case. There are four discs in the set, each containing six episodes. The artwork on each disc is very nice, with the series logo and different black and white photos of Reed and Malloy on each disc.
The menus on the set are very simple, but they are very nicely done as well. The main menu resembles a police radio, with "buttons" for Play All and Episodes. The theme song music plays in the background. Once you select Episodes, you get a text listing of all of the episodes on the disc, and the episode plays right away once you select it. Chapters are placed throughout each episode.
The video and audio quality of the episodes on the set looks pretty good, as is typically the case for these older Universal series from the '70s (which mysteriously seem to have been better preserved than those from the '80s and '90s). There is some grain and debris here and there, but it isn't too bad. The audio on the set is very loud and clear, and presented in mono as one would expect. Unfortunately, unlike all of the previous releases of the series, this one is NOT closed-captioned. It seems that Shout! Factory has been cutting back on these on their sets lately, which is somewhat understandable (since closed-captioning is not compatible with HDMI, the type of connection that is becoming prevalent for DVD and Blu-ray Disc players), but they aren't yet employing subtitles, which the better alternative.
There are no special features at all on this set, which is a bit of a bummer. Still, many series that get this far along in their run on DVD rarely have them.
Despite the lack of special features, this is generally a good DVD set, and fans of the series (as well as other police procedural dramas) are sure to enjoy this set. One thing about a show like this is that it is awfully difficult for the quality of the series to go down as it progresses, as the series doesn't even truly need creative minds to write creative stories. After all, the cases presented in the series are based upon true stories, and since all seven seasons have the same two officers, it pretty much stayed consistent. It is great to see that this series is progressing all the way into the final season, with that release scheduled in just a little over a month. Until then, you have a season full of great episodes to catch up on here.

BLOG FEATURE REVIEW
Blog DVD Review: Heathcliff - Season One, Volume One (Mill Creek, $12.98)
by skees53
Heathcliff, one of TV's orange cats from the '80s (there was Garfield too, of course) makes it to DVD yet again with Heathcliff - Season One, Volume One. This latest release from Mill Creek brings the first 32 episodes (half of the first season) of the classic DIC series to one DVD set, all together for the first time. The series, though, isn't the first series featuring Heathcliff. Earlier in the '80s, there was an animated series from Ruby Spears featuring Heathcliff and fellow comic page character Marmaduke. Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats, the more memorable series came a few years after that one was cancelled, and that is the one that is available on DVD.
There are far too many episodes on this set to go into great detail about most of them, particularly when you consider that each episode has two segments (the first featuring Heathcliff and the second featuring the Catillac Cats). In addition, at the end of each episode, there is a one minute (roughly) Pet Tips segment where Heathcliff gives kids advice on how to take care of pets. We'll briefly talk about some of the Heathcliff segments and the Catillac Cats segments.
Heathcliff begins with "The Great Pussini," where Heathcliff has to fight with an opera singing cat for Sonja's affection. Chauncey gets caught by a dog catcher in "Chauncey's Great Escape." Heathcliff tries to teach a lion at the zoo that he is "top cat" in "King of the Beasts." Heathcliff causes chaos when Iggy and Grandpa Nutmeg take him to the golf course in "Teed Off." In "Brain Sprain," Heathcliff may just be a genius cat. Heathcliff helps out a kitten who can't find her mother in "Kitten Smitten."
The Catillac Cats segments begin with "Kitty Kat Kennels," where the gang must help Cleo when her owners put her in a boarding kennel. The gang sneaks in to a carnival after hours in "Carnival Capers. Mungo finds a genie in a bottle in "Wishful Thinking." In "Cat Balloon," Cleo is tired of small town life and wants to experience excitement. A jungle vacation goes wrong for the cats in "Jungle Vacation."
The episodes on the set appear to be unedited for the most part, but there are a few runtimes that appear to be a little low. I'm not sure what, if anything, is missing, though. Nearly all of the episodes feature the original DIC and LBS logos, and the episodes even have a Lorimar Telepictures logo before the opening credits of each episode. Runtimes are as follows:
Disc 1:
1. "The Great Pussini/Kitty Kat Kennels" (22:13)
2. "Chauncey's Great Escape/Carnival Capers" (22:08)
3. "Mad Dog Catcher/Circus Beserkus" (22:13)
4. "Rebel Without a Claws/The Farming Life Ain't For Me" (22:13)
5. "Heathcliff's Middle Name/Wishful Thinking" (22:12)
6. "King of the Beasts/Cat Can Do" (22:15)
7. "Smoke Gets in My Eyes/Much Ado About Bedding" (22:12)
8. "City Slicker Cat/House of the Future" (22:15)
9. "Spike's Cousin/For the Birds" (22:13)
10. "Heathcliff's Pet/Swamp Fever" (22:14)
Disc 2:
11. "Teed Off/Monstro vs. The Wolf Hound" (21:42)
12. "Soy Cheese/Cat's Angels" (22:14)
13. "Meow Meow Island/Iron Cats" (22:14)
14. "Family Tree/Who's Got the Chocolate?" (22:12)
15. "Be Prepared/Cruisin' for a Bruisin'" (22:10)
16. "Heathcliff Gets Canned/Whackoed Out" (22:12)
17. "Brain Sprain/Cat Balloon" (22:15)
18. "May the Best Cat Win/Comedy Cats" (22:14)
19. "Revenge of the Kitty/Jungle Vacation" (22:14)
20. "Hospital Heathcliff/Hector's Takeover" (22:13)
21. "Going Shopping/Cat in the Fat" (22:12)
Disc 3:
22. "Wild Cat Heathcliff/Kitten Around" (22:14)
23. "Cat Burglar Heathcliff/Lucky's Unlucky Day" (22:16)
24. "The Blizzard Bandit/Harem Cat" (22:17)
25. "Kitten Smitten/Young Cat with a Horn" (20:08)
26. "The Gang's All Here/The Meowsic Goes Round and Round" (22:15)
27. "Snow Job/Condo Fever" (22:15)
28. "Heathcliff Pumps Iron/Mungo's Dilemma" (22:13)
29. "Heathcliff's Double/Big Foot" (22:15)
30. "Terrible Tammy/The Games of Love" (22:14)
31. "Big Top Bungling/Space Cats" (22:13)
32. "Lard Times/The Merry Prankster" (22:13)
The packaging for the set is very nicely designed, with a picture of Heathcliff on the cover (which appears to have been custom drawn for the release) and a few episode snapshots, along with a brief series description on the back. All of the episodes are listed on the back as well. Unfortunately, the Mill Creek black paper sleeves are back, again. Although the set is packaged in a standard sized DVD case (as opposed to the double sized ones that Mill Creek has been using), the three discs are inside the case in black paper sleeves. The disc artwork is the same as the cover work, and the episode numbers included on each disc are printed on the disc. Each disc has a whopping eleven episodes, although it isn't that big of a deal with a series that used low budget animation anyway.
The menus on the set are very basic, with a photo of Heathcliff on the main menu (the same one seen on the cover art). The theme song plays in the background. The main menu has options of Play All and Episodes, as well as Bonus Episode on Disc 1. Once you select Episodes, you get a menu which lists all of the episodes on the disc. But there is one bizarre quirk about all of the menus on the set. You only get 30 seconds to make your choice, and if you don't make your choice, the Play All option executes automatically. Another quirk about the menus is that once an episode finishes playing from the Episodes menu, the next episode plays right away, as if you selected Play All. It is all a little bizarre, but it isn't a huge deal. Chapters are placed before each segment of the episode.
The video and audio quality of the episodes on the set is, to say the least, disappointing. Of course, this was a low-budget syndicated show for kids from the '80s in the first place, so that is somewhat expected. The episodes look and sound very rough, as if they came from VHS transfers. You'll see many video defects throughout the episodes. The audio is a bit dull, but it isn't so bad that somebody should avoid the release. Unfortunately, the episodes are neither closed-captioned nor are they subtitled.
There is one special feature on this set, but it is NOT the one that has been advertised in all of the press releases for the series. Originally, an episode of The Busy World of Richard Scarry was to be included as a bonus on this set. That seems to have been changed, though, as instead, there is an episode of the '80s cartoon The Get Along Gang "Camp Get Along/School's Out" (22:22) on the set. I'm not sure why this change was made, but it is probably more fitting for the set. It can be found on Disc 1, and while I'm mentioning it, it is also worth mentioning that the video quality of this episode is terrible. But it is a bonus, so I can't complain about it too much.
This is by no means an award-winning set, but the reality is, this is as good as it could ever get. This series has been released by other studios in the past, including Shout! Factory, who put out a decent release of the first 24 that still suffered the same flaws that this set suffers, and NCircle, which put out "best of" releases with bizarre editing of the episodes such as removing the Catillac Cats segments and placing them as bonus features. The simple fact is, Mill Creek has released a decent set with a ton of episodes at a great price, and I have confidence that we'll see the remaining episodes of the series, probably in two separate releases. You can't ask for much more when you can get 32 episodes of a series for around $10. I really hope to see more series from the Cookie Jar library from Mill Creek, because Mill Creek is really good at taking programs that have a nostalgia factor and getting them released by any means necessary. If you were a fan of the series when it originally aired or in reruns, there is no reason at all to pass up on this release. It is a great value that is worth taking a chance on even if you've never seen the series before. It may be a bit dated for children today, but some will likely find enjoyment in it anyway. I haven't watched the series at all in probably over 15 years, and it was fun going back and revisiting the series. So you'll definitely want to check out this "cool cat" today.

CLICK OF THE WEEK
epguides.com - Almost every week in Digital Digest, in our DVD reviews, we link to the appropriate page from the website TV.com. And while it is a great website, it has significantly evolved from the original mission of the website, which was to provide complete episode guides for just about every series out there. The website is loaded with content for every series, reviews, news, and everything these days. So where can you go if you want to find a no-frills website that focuses JUST on episode guides? You might want to try epguides.com.
The website is actually not totally disconnected from the website TV.com. In fact, for a while, both of these sites were linked to one another. But epguides.com will take you straight to the information that you want without getting lost in a "click maze." You can find the series that you are looking for from one page with an alphabetic listing, for example. And once you select the series that you are looking for, you'll normally get a mostly error-free listing of all of the episodes of the series along with airdates, and none of those weird listings for non-existent seasons of series and incorrectly placed episodes. Often times, you can click on the episode titles within that episode list to get full details of the episode from another website, which sometimes is, in fact, TV.com, but it isn't so bad because it takes you straight to the information that you need on that site. So if you are wanting just a quick and no-frills place to go for episode guides, epguides.com is the place for you.
That's it for this week. Until next time, keep it digital!
