Fri-Yay: End of Modern Family is End of an Era; COZI TV Celebrates Will & Grace Finale with Marathon

by Vincent
On Wednesday night, Modern Family officially ended its 11-season run on ABC, a legendary run for a sitcom that was in many ways a landmark. The show is arguably the biggest and most successful single-camera sitcom of all time - only The Office has a case against it, which I'd say may have overtaken it due to its boom in popularity after its end thanks to its prevalence of Netflix (Modern Family, frustratingly, is still not available to stream in full on any major streaming site, although it plays often in syndication). Still, in terms of success and longevity during their network runs, Modern Family was able to appeal to a wide audience longer than any other single-camera sitcom. In some ways, its success already feels like the end of a bygone era of network TV. Because of streaming and audience fragmentation, network sitcoms just don't pull in the weekly audiences and have the same cultural spark that Modern Family did in its prime.
I also think Modern Family will register as a legendary sitcom for a few other reasons. The show depicted a fairly progressive view of families, and its success arguably has led to many, many successors depicting families that are a bit different than the typical nuclear family on TV. In fact, in some ways Modern Family became a victim of its own influence, in some ways. Because representation on TV has increased so much, Modern Family's "modern" family doesn't look as progressive as it did in 2009, but it's easy to forget that in 2009, the family sitcom was all but dead, its only relics on mainstream culture being shows from past eras that depicted very traditional American families. Modern Family not only made family sitcoms "cool" again in some ways, but it made them okay with depicting many other kind of families. That might be the norm now, but it certainly wasn't 11 years ago when the show premiered. Another part of the reason that a lot of people might not remember just how groundbreaking Modern Family was at first is also because, in many ways, the show became somewhat complacent through-out its run, forgoing the interesting, genuinely funny and heartwarming writing of the first several seasons with more stock sitcom plots. This is, of course, not atypical for long-running sitcoms, and although I wish Modern Family had remained fresh and funny for a little longer than it did, it still doesn't take away what the show accomplished. And the show's finale, while not groundbreaking TV, was a nice reminder of how funny the show could be. It's a fairly low-key finale (there is some change: Cam gets an offer to move to Missouri to coach a college football team, Phil and Claire kick the kids out of house, and Manny leaves home), but for the most part is was an episode without many bells and whistles. Life goes on for the Dunphys, even if things have changed. Modern Family might not be going out as one of the best sitcoms on TV, but it goes out leaving a reminder of why, at one time, it was.
In celebration of the upcoming series finale of NBC's Will & Grace, COZI TV announced a special "Celebrate! The Will & Grace Marathon," showcasing all season one episodes on Sunday, April 19 starting at 11:00 a.m. EST (check local listings). Wrapping up the marathon will be the original series finale from 2006, which has not been seen in syndication because of the new re-booted series storyline. This laugh-filled trip down memory lane will spotlight where it all began for Will, Grace, Jack and Karen before the show completes its four-decade run, comprising 11 seasons, 246 episodes and earning 18 Emmy Awards. In 2017, COZI TV became the exclusive digital broadcast network of the first eight seasons. The series finale will air on Thursday, April 23 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC. The hit comedy series Will & Grace features actors Debra Messing as Grace Adler, Megan Mullally as Karen Walker, Eric McCormack as Will Truman and Sean Hayes as Jack McFarland. The series follows best friends Will and Grace as they navigate living together, while they deal with their eccentric friends Karen and Jack. The show originally aired on NBC starting in 1998, with the season eight finale coming in 2006.
The following episodes from Will & Grace season one (and 2006 series finale) will air on COZI TV on Sunday, April 19 starting at 11:00 a.m.:

TBS Has Your Misery Covered in Pandemic; CBS Producing Episode of Series Virtually

TBS is bringing more humor into homes with Season 2 of the outrageously entertaining comedy game show The Misery Index, returning on Thursday, May 14 at 10:30pm ET / PT. Host Jameela Jamil reprises her role alongside the stars of truTV's Impractical Jokers, comedy troupe The Tenderloins – Brian "Q" Quinn, James "Murr" Murray, Joe Gatto and Sal Vulcano – as panelists translating the most miserable of mishaps into outright hilarity at a time when we need it most. The Misery Index debuted in 2019 with ratings that continued to grow each week, reaching more than 38 million viewers across linear, VOD, and digital platforms. Inspired by the card game Sh*t Happens, The Misery Index features teams competing against each other by attempting to rate hilarious and miserable real-life events based on the "misery index," a ranking system created by a team of psychologists. This season will feature special themed episodes including dueling grandmothers, a visit from one of The Tenderloins' family members, and a showdown between motherlands.
CBS' freshman drama series All Rise returns to production to virtually produce a timely episode that reflects the world's current state of the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and its impact on the criminal justice system. Judge Lola Carmichael (Simone Missick) will virtually preside over a bench trial. The new episode will air Monday, May 4 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
The show's consulting producer, former Los Angeles County District Attorney Gil Garcetti, is providing insight into how the justice system continues in Los Angeles, even during the pandemic. Throughout the episode, the series' characters will be shown managing their "new normal" of everyday reality at home, in order to continue their professional and personal lives, parallel to what the nation is currently confronting. Written and inspired by current events, the new episode will be produced in groundbreaking fashion for a scripted series, filmed extensively using FaceTime, WebEx, Zoom and other available social media and online technology.
Virtual footage will be shot in each of the series regular's homes, and producers plan to use VFX to create the necessary backgrounds. In addition, a cinematographer operating solo from a vehicle will capture exterior footage that reflects the desolate environment that currently exists on the streets and in the neighborhoods of Los Angeles. The entire episode will be shot abiding by social distancing rules and technologies taking place in the world as it exists now. Executive producer Michael Robin will direct.
In the episode, after debating the merits of continuing their work during this time, Judge Benner (Marg Helgenberger) authorizes Lola to preside over a virtual trial that involves a dispute between brothers and a stolen car. Emily (Jessica Camacho) represents the defendant, a graffiti artist, and Mark (Wilson Bethel) prosecutes for the D.A.'s office, marking the first time he tries a case in Lola's "court." Also, Mark and Quinn (Lindsey Gort) continue to explore their romantic (and sexual) relationship while quarantined in separate homes; Judge Benner oversees court from afar and struggles to learn how to cook; and Sara (Lindsay Mendez) has to balance her day job with a new side hustle as a food delivery driver. Luke (J. Alex Brinson) and Emily's relationship is taxed by separation, and germaphobe and type-A Sherri (Ruthie Ann Miles) contends with the new world (dis)order.

Fox Renews Duncanville for Second Season; Remembering Forrest Compton of Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.

Fox Entertainment has ordered a second season of the new animated series Duncanville, to air during the 2021-2022 season. From Emmy Award and Golden Globe winner Amy Poehler and Emmy Award winners Mike and Julie Scully, Duncanville follows a spectacularly average 15-year-old boy with a rich fantasy life, and the people in his world.
In the series, Duncan (Poehler) can see adulthood on the horizon: money, freedom, cars, girls…but the reality is more like: always being broke, driving with your mom sitting shotgun and babysitting your little sister. He's not exceptional, but he has a wild imagination in which he’s never anything less than amazing. Poehler also voices Duncan's mother, Annie, and Emmy Award winner Ty Burrell voices Duncan's father, Jack. The series also features the voices of Emmy Award nominee Riki Lindhome, Betsy Sodaro, Yassir Lester and Zach Cherry, as well as guest voices Rashida Jones, Wiz Khalifa and Joy Osmanski.
Season-to-date, Duncanville averages 2.3 million multiplatform viewers and is Fox's most-streamed new comedy this season, while its premiere is Fox's most-streamed animated debut on record (7-day average).
Actor Forrest Compton, who appeared as Lieutenant Colonel Edward Gray in Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., has died. He died on April 4 in Shelter Island, New York, from COVID-19 complications. Mr. Compton was 94.
Compton appeared in the recurring role of Lieutenant Colonel Edward Gray, the stern but fair battalion commander, in 41 episodes of the 1964-1970 CBS sitcom Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. . The cast included Jim Nabors, Frank Sutton, Ronnie Schell, Roy Stuart (1965-1968), Ted Bessell (1965-1966), Barbara Stuart, William Christopher (1965-1968), Allan Melvin (1965-1969), Tommy Leonetti (1964-1965), Larry Hovis (1964-1965) and Elizabeth McRae (1967-1969).
Some of his sitcom guest appearances included Hennesey, My Three Sons, The Queen and I, Mayberry R.F.D., Hogan's Heroes and That Girl.
He portrayed attorney Mike Karr, the central character, in the long-running soap opera The Edge of the Night. He appeared in 432 episodes from 1971-1984. Compton was the third actor to play the crime fighting district attorney. Mike Karr was previously played by John Larkin and Laurence Hugo. Some of his soap opera guest appearances included As the World Turns, One Life to Live, Another World, All My Children and Loving.
Some of his drama guest appearances included Death Valley Days, Johnny Ringo, Troubleshooters, Fury, Flight, Route 66, Checkmate, Hawaiian Eye, 77 Sunset Strip, The Fugitive, The Invaders, Mannix, The F.B.I. and Ed.
Mr. Compton served with the 103rd Infantry Division in France during World War II. We thank him for his service to our country and for his acting roles. He will be greatly missed.

Fri-Yay: Community Moving to Netflix Next Week; NBC Announces Final Episodes of Season List

by Vincent
Starting on Wednesday, Community is the latest sitcom addition to join Netflix. This is pretty exciting as it's an opportunity for the series to become more popular, and I've always felt that it's been the NBC sitcom of its era that has been the least discovered by the steaming masses. The Office and Parks and Rec have become streaming favorites, 30 Rock is a constant internet meme generator, but Community - while still beloved by its small but dedicated fanbase - doesn't get quite the same amount of hype. Hopefully, the show's transition to Netflix can expose it to a wider audience. While Community has been available on Hulu for many years, and Hulu is steadily increasing in popularity, it still doesn't seem to get quite the same cultural pull that Netflix does.
If you're someone with a Netflix account looking for a new sitcom to watch while staying home, Community is a great choice. It's funny, creative and has a great cast, and goes places you'd never expect a sitcom to do. It has the same clever humor of a show like The Office, but with the mind-blowing experimenting of a fringe show like Rick and Morty. I highly recommend the series, and I hope it gets enough new fans that maybe the "and a movie" part of its six seasons and a movie prophecy comes true.
Due to production halts, most series were cut a few episodes. NBC has announced final episode dates for its series. While Robin Williams started performing stand-up comedy in the mid-'70s, most of America first fell in love with him as the naïve and hilarious alien from the planet Ork in Mork & Mindy. He became an instant superstar and went on to do five HBO stand-up specials and dozens of feature films. Robin performed steadily for nearly four decades-from comedy clubs to stadiums, from talk shows to USO tours-and continually amazed audiences with his frenetic energy and unbelievably quick wit.
Available since yesterday on April Fools' Day, the comedy connoisseurs at Time Life launched The Official Robin Williams YouTube Channel, celebrating Robin's comic genius. Whether you know Robin from the stage or from the screen, as a comedian, an alien, or a genie-home audiences can subscribe to the channel and be prepared to laugh and cry at unforgettable and hilarious performances by the singular talent.
The channel will feature classic live performance clips hand-picked from Robin's HBO stand-up specials, including his uproarious sketch on the beginnings of golf (Live on Broadway, 2002), his emotional "Spark of Madness" (Off the Wall, 1978) and a hilarious and detailed account of his run-in with the famous signing gorilla, Koko (Live on Broadway). Also featured at launch are exclusive, recently shot interview clips with comedian Lewis Black on "Becoming Friends with Robin Williams" and David Steinberg, Williams' longtime manager and friend holding forth with an "Inside Look on Robin Williams' Genius." Each week following the launch, the comedy mavens at Time Life will post a brand new clip to the channel.
Of the channel, Steinberg says, "What a great time to enjoy the gift of Robin's genius. Who doesn't need a laugh?"
The Official Robin Williams YouTube Channel follows on the heels of Time Life's release of ROBIN WILLIAMS: COMIC GENIUS, a trio of DVD collections celebrating the iconic comedian's 40-year career. Included in the releases, decades in the making, is a completeist's 22-disc set featuring 50+ hours of improvisational brilliance, a 5-disc collector's set, and a single disc featuring Robin's first HBO stand-up special. All DVD releases also feature newly produced featurettes and exclusive interviews.
