SitcomsOnline Digest: NBC Looking at "Musical Funeral Home Soap" Series; Grace Under Fire DVD Date Announced

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! It's been a slow news week with the holiday earlier in the week and preparations for the upcoming season also under way, but we are here with some news nonetheless, including a potential "musical funeral home soap" from NBC (whatever that is). Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • While it may be an unusually new idea in a world of reboots, NBC has decided that they want to do a series described as a "musical funeral home soap," which we're guessing would be a lot like Glee with a lot of dead people. (A.V. Club
  • The Odd Couple will be adding Teri Hatcher to the cast as a recurring character once it returns later in the upcoming season. (Hollywood Reporter
  • The CW has been on the air for almost a decade now, but the future of the network is going to going to depend upon a lot of factors which will be addressed soon. (Deadline)
  • The new late night war has put Stephen Colbert up against Jimmy Fallon, but the new competition isn't really hurting Fallon much so far. (Deadline
  • Martin Milner, star of Route 66 and Adam-12, died this week at the age of 83. (ABC News)
  • Merv Adelson, co-founder of Lorimar Television (the studio that brought series such as Eight is Enough, The Waltons, and Dallas to television, and later sitcoms like Full House and ALF), died this week at the age of 85. (New York Times

HOME MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS

Who to Follow: Jane Lynch (Twitter), "Official #JaneLynch // #Actress #BonVivantess #GameShowHostess #CabaretSongstress"
Claim to Fame: For the most part, when people hear of the name Jane Lynch, they think of Glee... which, even though it was sort of a comedy, it is a series that we've sort of neglected around here since it wasn't actually a sitcom. That's no longer relevant, though, because Jane Lynch's next project actually is a legitimate sitcom (and, we should add, we will be featuring stars of the fall's new sitcoms as our Follow Me for the next few weeks, as we typically do), the upcoming CBS series Angel From Hell. Actually, the series will not debut until November 5, but in it, Lynch will play a guardian angel, quite a different character from her Sue Sylvester on Glee. Besides Glee, though, Lynch currently hosts Hollywood Game Night over on NBC, and has had numerous (too many to list) appearances in other past TV series, most notable a recurring role on Two and a Half Men.

2 Broke Girls on TBS Schedule; Patricia Heaton Parties with Food Network

2 Broke Girls

As we hinted on the first part of the TBS Fall 2015 schedule, 2 Broke Girls is coming to TBS. The CBS sitcom will premiere on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8:30pm and air in between The Big Bang Theory at 8 and 9. It will also air at 9:30pm, sandwiched in between Bang. The series will also air at 10:30pm & 11pm, that night for a four-episode premiere. The series will air in primetime on most weeknights, so check your local listings. There will be Saturday marathons usually starting around 5pm. 2 Broke Girls of course stars Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings as Caroline and Max. Stay with us for continued updates.

Patricia Heaton Parties

Two-time Emmy(R) Award-winning actress Patricia Heaton has been entertaining viewers for years on-screen, and now she's flipping the script and inviting the audience home to share her favorite party-friendly food and home entertaining how-to's in the new series Patricia Heaton Parties. Drawing inspiration from her family, travels and themes like Halloween, football tailgates and anniversaries, Patricia's delicious take on easy-to-make appetizers, creative cocktails and party décor always deliver a memorable celebration. The six-episode series premieres Saturday, October 24 at 12pm ET/PT. Halloween is a big deal for Patricia at home and on-set and in the premiere episode, she has The Middle co-stars Brock Ciarlelli, Charlie McDermott, Jen Ray, Eden Sher and makeup artist Tyson Fontaine over for a Halloween to remember. With Tombstone and Coffin Grilled Cheese, Smoky Tomato Soup, Zombie Punch with Eyeball Ice Cubes, Spooky Salad with Blood Dressing and Candied Pretzel Parts, this menu is filled with treats and a few of Patricia's culinary tricks. Upcoming episodes feature Patricia and her husband David Hunt's 25th wedding anniversary celebration, a backyard meal with her sons and a special ladies night.

Patricia Heaton stars in ABC's critically acclaimed comedy, The Middle, as Frankie, a super mom who is trying to find balance between her family and career in the mid-west. She is, perhaps, best known for her role as Debra Barone on the classic series Everybody Loves Raymond. She won two Emmy(R) Awards for the role and was nominated seven times. In addition to her Emmy(R) wins, Patricia is the recipient of the Best Comedy Actress award from Viewers for Quality Television, a SAG Award and three SAG nominations in the Best Actress category for her role on Everybody Loves Raymond. Patricia will add another executive producer title to her impressive collection when Patricia Heaton Parties premieres this fall. She is a mother to four sons and lives in Los Angeles with her husband.

TV One Orders Second Season of Sitcom Born Again Virgin; Disney Channel Is Stuck in the Middle with New Comedy

Born Again Virgin

TV One announced that it has picked up its newest summer scripted comedy Born Again Virgin for a 12-episode second season scheduled to launch in early 2016. Currently airing Wednesdays at 10PM/ET, the sexy, sassy comedy which follows the exploits of a 30-something blogger who decides to embrace celibacy after years of unsatisfactory dating, recently posted its third consecutive week of episode gains in the key demo of W18-34. Additionally, the series is a Top 3 Cable Program on Wednesday nights at 10PM/ET among Black Households, W25-54 and P18-49. Born Again Virgin follows Jenna (Danielle Nicolet), a writer who decides to become celibate after a stream of unsuccessful dates and hook-ups leave her wanting more meaningful relationships. She decides to blog about her newly adopted sex-fast and share the hilarious "sexcapades" of her girlfriends - Kelly (Meagan Holder), a publicist, known equally for her success launching new clients as her ability to attract 'failure to launch' men and Tara (Eva Marcille), a budding actress who splits her time between gigs hanging out with her girls and finding her next suitor to bankroll her celebrity-inspired lifestyle. Delivering a bit of temptation is Donovan (Durrell "Tank" Babbs), their hot neighbor who makes staying on the right path nearly impossible for Jenna. Each week, the ladies comically work through their dating woes and career challenges while showcasing heartfelt moments of friendship.

Disney Channel

Disney Channel has ordered the family comedy series Stuck in the Middle, starring Jenna Ortega (Jane the Virgin) as Harley Diaz, an engineering whiz who uses her inventions to navigate life as the middle child in a family of seven kids. Playing her siblings are Ronni Hawk as Rachel, Kayla Maisonet (Dog with a Blog) as Georgie, Isaak Presley (Austin & Ally) as Grant, Nicolas Bechtel (General Hospital) as Danny, Malachi Barton (Best Friends Whenever) as Beast and Ariana Greenblatt (Liv and Maddie) as Daphne. Production begins this November for a Spring 2016 premiere. Stuck in the Middle, a single-camera family comedy, centers around the Diaz family and is told from the point-of-view of the middle child - Harley. Her overlooked status proves to be both a blessing and a curse as she maneuvers her way through the everyday antics that come with being part of a big family.

Last Man Standing Heads to CMT; New Girl Timeslots on MTV

Last Man Standing

Yesterday we mentioned in our look at the Labor Day TV marathons that Last Man Standing was having one on CMT, now today it joins the CMT lineup. The Tim Allen sitcom will air weeknights on CMT from 7-8pm beginning today with the very first episode. Last Man Standing will air in between Reba, which will air 5-7pm and 8-9pm. As we also mentioned, Last Man Standing is coming to ABC Family later this month as well. The series is also coming to The Hallmark Channel in early 2016. In the series, barely surviving in a household full of women, a man's-man patriarch evaluates how far the modern woman has come, and wonders what has become of all the men. Back to CMT, Raising Hope is moving to 2-3am as a result, following Cops Reloaded. CMT will also air America's Funniest Home Videos weekdays at 3pm and 4pm. Stay with us for continued updates.

New Girl

As for New Girl on MTV, we mentioned the Labor Day marathon yesterday and that it would join the line-up shared with TBS. MTV is airing the Zooey Deschanel comedy weekdays from 4-6pm. TBS is airing the series from 3-4pm. New Girl joins the MTV line-up with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as the only comedies on the network, as that series airs weekday mornings from 9-11am. New Girl stars the Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated Zooey Deschanel as Jess, a smart and spirited woman navigating her way through the highs and lows of modern friendship and romance with her male roommates (Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris and Damon Wayans Jr.) and best friend (Hannah Simone). Keep it right here for all things New Girl.
