Robert Guillaume

Emmy Award-winning actor Robert Guillaume, who was best known for his role as Benson DuBois in Soap and the spin-off Benson, has died. He died on October 24 at his home in Los Angeles, California, from prostate cancer. Mr. Guillaume was 89.

Guillaume's early sitcom guest appearances included Julia, Sanford and Son, All in the Family, The Jeffersons and Good Times. In 1970, he appeared in an episode of Marcus Welby, M.D..

Soap

His first starring role was as Benson in the ABC sitcom Soap. Benson was the wisecracking cook/butler for the wealthy Tate family. He appeared in 50 episodes of the series from 1977-1980. The series also starred Robert Mandan, Katherine Helmond, Diana Canova, Jennifer Salt, Jimmy Baio, Arthur Peterson, Cathryn Damon, Richard Mulligan, Billy Crystal, Ted Waas, Robert Urich and Jay Johnson. Guillaume won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1979.

Benson

The Benson character was very popular, so he he got his own spin-off series in 1979. Benson worked for Jessica's (Katherine Helmond) cousin, Governor James Gatling (James Noble), as the head of household affairs. Although his last name wasn't mentioned on Soap, it was revealed to be DuBois in the spin-off. Benson aired for 7 seasons and 158 episodes on ABC from 1979-1986. The series also starred Missy Gold, Inga Swenson, René Auberjonois (1980-1986), Ethan Phillips (1980-1985), Caroline McWilliams (1979-1981), Lewis J. Stadlen (1979-1980), Didi Conn (1981-1983) and Billie Bird (1984-1986). Guillaume won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for the role in 1985.

Guillaume starred as marriage counselor Edward Sawyer in the short-lived 1989 ABC sitcom The Robert Guillaume Show. The series was about a single father with two children who begins an interracial relationship with Ann (Wendy Phillips), a white woman who has a daughter of her own. The series also starred Hank Rolike, Kelsey Scott and Marc Joseph.

He starred as Detective Bob Ballard in the 1991-1992 NBC sitcom Pacific Station. Detective Bob Ballard was a wisecracking veteran cop who had been assigned to Pacific Station in Venice, California. The series also starred Richard Libertini, Joel Murray, Ron Leibman, Megan Gallagher and John Hancock.

Sports Night

Guillaume played Isaac Jaffe in the 1998-2000 ABC comedy/drama Sports Night. Isaac Jaffe was the managing editor of the late-night Sports Night program for the fictional Continental Sports Channel (CSC). Guillaume suffered a mild stroke midway through the first season on January 14, 1999. This event was worked into his character and the season's story arc. The short-lived but critically acclaimed series also starred Peter Krause, Josh Charles, Felicity Huffman, Joshua Malina, Sabrina Lloyd, Greg Baker, Kayla Blake, Timothy Davis Reed, Jeff Mooring and Ron Ostrow.

Some of his other sitcom guest appearances included The Love Boat, A Different World, Saved by the Bell: The College Years, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Goode Behavior, Moesha and 8 Simple Rules.

He was also known for his voice work. He provided the voice of Detective Catfish in the short-lived 1992 CBS animated sitcom Fish Police. His other television voice credits included The Addams Family, Captain Planet and the Planeteers and The Proud Family. He was the narrator for the HBO series Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child. He was the voice of Rafiki in the movie The Lion King and its sequels and spin-offs.

The Archive of American Television conducted an extensive interview with him on March 24, 1999.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Brown-Guillaume; three daughters, Patricia Carpenter and Melissa and Rachel Guillaume; one son, Kevin; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Mr. Guillaume won two Emmy Awards in 1979 and 1985 and a Grammy Award in 1995 for his spoken word performance of a audiobook version of The Lion King during his career that spanned more than 50 years. He was wonderful as Benson DuBois in Soap and Benson, which was of the most underrated sitcoms of the 1980s. We thank him for the many hours of laughter and entertainment he brought us over the years. He will be greatly missed.

Soap and Benson will both return to Antenna TV in January according to their Facebook page. Stay with us for any updates.

ION Television today announced its latest partnership with leading independent studio Entertainment One Television (eOne), reaching an agreement for new original episodes of Saving Hope. Produced by eOne and ICF Films in association with CTV, season three of the medical drama series recently began production on 18 new episodes in June. The deal, which includes rights to existing seasons one and two, makes ION the exclusive original U.S. television network for current and future seasons of the series. Along with newly arrived star surgeon, Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies), Reid races to save Harris' life. As the action unfolds, the comatose Harris explores the hospital halls in the form of a spirit, questioning whether or not he is a figment of his own imagination. Rita Moreno

Groundbreaking actor, singer, dancer, author and educator Rita Moreno has been named the 50th recipient of SAG-AFTRA's highest tribute – the SAG Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment. Given annually to an actor who fosters the "finest ideals of the acting profession," the SAG Life Achievement Award will join Moreno's rare catalog of preeminent industry and public honors, which also includes an Oscar®, two Emmys®, a Tony®, a Grammy®, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of the Arts. One of only 11 artists and the only Hispanic performer to have won the entertainment industry's four top competitive awards, she earned her Oscar in 1962 for her iconic portrayal of saucy Anita in West Side Story, a role which drew on memories of the racial taunts she endured as a young Puerto Rican immigrant living in a Bronx "barrio." Her 1972 Grammy honored her performance on The Electric Company Album, based on the long-running PBS children's literacy television series on which Moreno played multiple roles in a memorable cast that included Bill Cosby and Morgan Freeman.

Moreno's current role as Fran Drescher's mother in TV Land's Happily Divorced, is the latest in a long roster of television performances dating back to a panoply of television anthologies in the early 1950s and continuing throughout her career with numerous guest roles between films and stage appearances. In 1982-83, she starred in her own TV series based on the film 9 to 5. Additionally, she played opposite Burt Reynolds in B.L. Stryker and was a series regular with Bill Cosby on NBC's The Cosby Mysteries. And in 2007, she starred in the CBS series Cane.

FX to Launch FXX, New Spin-off Network, with Reruns of Parks and Rec and More; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of April 1, 2013)

FXX

On Monday, September 2, FX Networks will launch FXX, a new network aimed at young adult viewers. With the addition of FXX, FX Networks will become a suite of three networks consisting of FX, FXX and FXM (formerly know as Fox Movie Channel). FXX will be available in 74 million homes in year one, making it one of the most widely distributed entertainment networks ever for an ad-supported cable network in its inaugural year. FXX initially will be built on a foundation of original comedy series, movies and acquired series, and expand to include original drama series, all primarily designed to attract young adults 18-34. Before we get into FXX, we'll talk about what this means for FX and FXM. FX, the flagship of FX Networks, will continue to offer award-winning original comedy and drama series, movies and acquired series targeted to Adults 18-49. FX will increase the number of drama series and begin offering limited series and miniseries. FXM will continue to be home to prestige movies, and related short-form original programming - as its universe grows, it will begin to televise its own limited series and miniseries.

FXX will be anchored by the hit original series It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League, two of the finest comedies on television and two of the highest-rated among Adults 18-24. These series, along with the series Legit, will move from FX to FXX with the launch of the network this fall. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's ninth season will air on FXX this fall, and the network has also placed an order for a tenth season that will air in the fall of 2014. The League's already announced fifth season will now air on FXX this fall, and the network is announcing a sixth season pickup that will air on FXX in the fall of 2014. The new critically-acclaimed comedy Legit's first season will end on FX Thursday, April 11 at 10:30PM ET/PT. The show has officially been picked up for a second season, and will be moving to FXX, returning in early 2014. In addition, late night comedy series Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, will go from from weekly to a five-night a week late night strip beginning this Fall with the launch of FXX. Totally Biased will debut its new format this fall with the launch of FXX with 130 new original episodes, airing Monday-Thursday at 11:00 PM ET/PT, with Best of the Week compilation episodes Sunday nights at 11:00 PM ET/PT. Until then, new episodes of Totally Biased in its currently weekly iteration will resume on FX on Thursday, May 9 at 11:00pm ET/PT. One pick-up that was announced by FX Networks today will remain on FX. The critically-acclaimed drama series Justified, starring Timothy Olyphant, will continue to run on FX. Season five begins production this fall and will air on FX in January 2014. Season four is currently airing, with the season finale slated to air next Tuesday, April 2, at 10:00 PM ET/PT.

As far as acquisitions, FXX will bulk up on younger skewing comedy series and dramas. They have gotten off-network rerun rights to a number of sitcoms and dramas. They'll air reruns of How I Met Your Mother, which currently air on FX, but there's more! Other series that have been announced so far are Parks and Recreation, Rescue Me, Arrested Development, Sports Night and Freaks & Geeks. FXX will also feature blockbuster movies in all dayparts. As for FX, they also will televise blockbuster movies in all dayparts, with a library unmatched by any basic cable network. The FX schedule will also include the acquired series Anger Management, Two and a Half Men and, coming in 2014, Mike & Molly. Presumably, How I Met Your Mother will be moving to FXX, but there is chance it will air on both FX and FXX. We hope to have more news on the acquisitions for both FX and FXX, including if there are more and what the schedule will be, but that won't be until this summer when we get into our annual fall schedules barrage! As far as development, FX will be bulking up on that and have a lot of series in the works. FX has ordered its first limited series, Fargo, from MGM Television. The series is adapted by novelist/writer Noah Hawley from the award-winning film of the same title and will run for 10 episodes in Spring 2014. And there are many other limited series, dramas, and comedy pilots in the works, so FX will still be very much in the original game even when some of the originals will move to FXX. Stay with us for continued updates!
