ABC Gives Full Season Orders for 2 New Series; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of October 3, 2016)
Two critically acclaimed new Wednesday series, comedy Speechless and drama Designated Survivor, have been given full-season pickups for ABC. Nine additional episodes of both series, from Twentieth Century Fox Television and ABC Studios, and The Mark Gordon Company and ABC Studios respectively, have been ordered. Building on its lead-in by double digits on average, ABC's Designated Survivor ranks a dominant No. 1 in Wednesday's 10:00 p.m. hour with Live + Same Day Total Viewers (9.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.0/7). More than doubling the audience in its time period on its series debut (+104%), the new drama delivered ABC's most-watched scripted telecast in the hour in 5 years - since 9/21/11. The season's biggest gainer in TV playback with viewers, the Designated Survivor debut shot up in the Live + 3 Day numbers to 15.3 million viewers (+5.3 million) and a 3.7 rating in Adults 18-49 (+1.5 rating points). In fact, the show's 5.3 million viewer spike after 3 days of playback is the largest lift for any TV series debut in 2 years - since ABC's How to Get Away with Murder on 9/25/14. Designated Survivor stars Kiefer Sutherland as Tom Kirkman, Natascha McElhone as Alex Kirkman, Adan Canto as Aaron Shore, Italia Ricci as Emily Rhodes, LaMonica Garrett as Mike Ritter, Tanner Buchanan as Leo Kirkman; with Kal Penn as Seth Wright and Maggie Q as Hannah Wells
ABC's Speechless debuted as the No. 2 regular new comedy during Premiere Week (w/o 9/19/16) among Adults 18-49, behind only CBS' Big Bang-led Kevin Can Wait. In fact, Speechless ranked among the week's Top 5 highest-rated comedies on TV with young adults (No. 5-tie). In Total Viewers, the show's debut drew ABC's biggest scripted audience to the time period in 1-year - since 9/30/15. On average in Live + Same Day, ABC's Speechless (6.9 million and 1.9/7) builds on its The Goldbergs lead-in by 3% in Total Viewers and retains a strong 95% among Adults 18-49. Speechless stars Minnie Driver as Maya DiMeo, John Ross Bowie as Jimmy DiMeo, Mason Cook as Ray DiMeo, Micah Fowler as JJ DiMeo, Kyla Kenedy as Dylan DiMeo and Cedric Yarbrough as Kenneth.

You're the Worst Returns to FXX; VH1 Also Acquires Mindy Project
The critically-acclaimed comedy series You're the Worst has been renewed for a fourth season on FXX. The comedy from writer and executive producer Stephen Falk, currently ranked among television's leading comedies with a Metacritic score of 85, will return to FXX in 2017. You're the Worst is off to a strong start in Season 3 as its premiere delivered the series' most-watched telecast on FXX. The series is holding strong in Week 3 over its Season 2 average, with Total Viewers up +13% (590,000 vs. 521,000) and Adults 18-49 holding steady (-1%, 387,000 vs. 392,000) on a Live+7 basis.
You're the Worst is a modern look at love and happiness told through the eyes of two people who haven't been very successful with either. It's the story of Gretchen and Jimmy, fear, heartbreak, romance, sex, food, Los Angeles, Sunday Funday, friendship, and the fact that sometimes the worst people make the best partners. You're the Worst received Critics' Choice Television Award nominations for Best Comedy Series in 2015 and 2016, as well as a nomination for Aya Cash (Best Actress in a Comedy Series) and Kether Donohue (Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series) in 2016. An original comedy from writer and executive producer Stephen Falk, You're the Worst puts a dark twist on the romantic comedy genre. Narcissistic, brash, and stubborn Jimmy Shive-Overly (Chris Geere) has inadvertently found himself paired up with cynical, people-pleasing, and self-destructive Gretchen Cutler (Aya Cash). Rounding out the cast is Desmin Borges, who plays Edgar Quintero, Jimmy's once homeless war veteran roommate who is struggling to manage his PTSD while forging a post-combat life; and Kether Donohue as Lindsay Jillian, Gretchen's best friend and former partner in crime who's exploring her identity after her loveless marriage was resurrected by a surprise pregnancy.

It's Better Late Than Never Again for NBC; GSN Has Tracy Morgan as Host of Scare Tactics
The boys are back! Summer's new broadcast series, Better Late Than Never, is returning for a second season. This past summer award-winning actor, producer, writer and director Henry Winkler (Happy Days, Royal Pains), Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actor, director and writer William Shatner (Star Trek, The Practice), celebrated football legend and NFL analyst Terry Bradshaw (Fox NFL Sunday), boxing Hall of Famer and gold medal winner-turned businessman George Foreman and comedian Jeff Dye (NBC's I Can Do That) embarked on the ultimate international excursion to Asia with no assistants, no limousines and no lattes, in search of an intimate life-changing experience. The five navigated their way through Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan; Seoul, South Korea; Hong Kong; and Phuket and Chiang Mai, Thailand - communicating with the local population, immersing themselves in local traditions and enjoying exotic food - all the while dealing with the unexpected twists and turns that any trip presents. Winkler, Shatner, Bradshaw, Foreman and Dye will return for the second season. The locale will be announced at a later date. It is expected to air next summer.
GSN, the leader in game shows and competitive entertainment, announced it has obtained telecast rights to 13 episodes of the hidden camera/comedy horror TV show Scare Tactics, hosted by actor/comedian Tracy Morgan. The show will be paired with the network's new horror-themed game Hellevator in a "Friday Night Frights" programming block on Fridays from 9-11pm ET/PT, beginning October 7. Scare Tactics,, which originally aired for five seasons, is a hidden camera/comedy TV series with a Sci-Fi twist. Episodes from season five, featuring actor/comedian Tracy Morgan (30 Rock, Saturday Night Live) take advantage of the age-old practice of friends playing practical jokes on each other. Set up by friends and family members, the show's unwitting "stars" are caught off guard and on camera in elaborately staged horror hoaxes involving movie-style special effects and expert make-up.
Hellevator , produced by Matador and masters of the horror genre Blumhouse Productions, in association with Lionsgate Television, is a terrifying, genre-bending series which dares a team of four friends to ride a haunted elevator into the depths of an abandoned slaughterhouse. With $50,000 at stake, contestants must conquer multiple floors of terrifying chaos and hair-raising challenges in order to move on to the final level - The Inferno. In addition to the psychological terror players will face during their quest, they must also endure the wrath of the show's masterminds, horror film icons Jen and Sylvia Soska, aka the "Twisted Twins," who work in tandem from their secret lair to torment and trip-up players as they struggle to remain sane and keep in mind, "it's just a game."
