On the next...Family Guy (Fox, Sun 8:30pm):
By: Skees

After several weeks of reruns, Family Guy returns tonight at a special time of 8:30pm (leading into the premiere of the Fox miniseries Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey at 9:00pm) with the new episode "Mom's the Word." As the series has progressed over the years, we've met Peter's father, Frances Griffin, who was voiced by the late Charles Durning; that character was voiced by the late Charles Durning, and the character was killed off several years before Durning's death. Peter's mother, Thelma Griffin, was briefly voiced by Florence Stanley and later by Phyllis Diller. With both of those actresses now deceased, the series is now taking the opportunity to deal with the death of the character voiced by Diller in the latest episode, "Mom's the Word."

The episode begins Peter having an "accident" at work after eating raw foods at home. Following the accident, he returns home, where his family and all of his friends are waiting for him. Convinced that this is some sort of "intervention" to deal with his embarrassment from his accident, he reveals several embarrassing things that he has done recently. But when Lois finally gets a chance to reveal the real reason everybody is there, he becomes very sad: his mother has just passed away. Now, Peter has to cope with the death of his mother, including removing her belongings from her retirement home. It is at the retirement home where he gets to meet Evelyn (voiced by another legendary actress, Lauren Bacall). As it turns out Evelyn was a good friend of Thelma's, and understands the pain that Peter is going through. It doesn't take long for a special bond to develop between Peter and Evelyn, one that both of them seem to be happy with... except Evelyn decides that she would rather take that bond to a whole new level that will make Peter incredibly uncomfortable. Meanwhile, at home, Stewie begins to start worrying about his own death and tries to get answers about what happens after he dies. Brian is there to help him Stewie find his own answers, but it just leads to even more confusion after Brian reveals his own atheistic beliefs of the afterlife.

One thing that I like about Family Guy is how the series occasionally disrupts the flow of the traditional cartoon by killing off characters, adding them in, giving them new jobs, etc. I also like how they dealt with the death of Peter's mother in this episode. Rather than focusing the episode on her dying in some really dumb way (as they did when Peter's father died), they just explained that she died, without going into details, and when on to the next phase. However, while Lauren Bacall's character on the episode was a great character to watch, the plot seemed to change too quickly. Most of the time spent on the plot was about Peter meeting Evelyn, and it quickly and abruptly turned to her trying to seduce Peter in the last few minutes of the episode. Maybe there wasn't enough material to add in about her trying to seduce him, but it seemed to move too quickly. The subplot of the episode, about Stewie looking into the question of life after death, was even more troubling. Stewie Griffin's character was intended to be "evil." Now, however, he is scared of death and wants to know the answers about death. It seems that Stewie becomes less evil and more childlike all the time. In the end, though, this was a reasonably episode of the series, though not one of the best ones of the season and certainly not as good as I would have liked to have seen for an episode that deals with a critical plot turn for the series.
