SitcomsOnline Digest: Preview of ABC's New Muppet Series; Candace Cameron Bure Possibly Joining The View

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we've got a sneak preview of The Muppets, news of a Full House star joining The View on a regular basis, even more Mill Creek re-release news, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • The Muppets are coming soon to ABC, and producers are very eager for fans to get a preview of what is coming. So they have posted a 10 minute preview online. (IFC)
  • The View can't seem to get things together at all in recent years, and now, there are solid (but not fully confirmed) rumblings about adding Candace Cameron Bure (yes, D.J. from Full House) as a co-host. (Variety)
  • Sitcoms in the United States have featured gay characters for decades, but in China, such themes still can't be shown on television. But now, a sitcom called Rainbow Family (something being compared to both Will and Grace and Friends) has become a huge hit in China... but it can only be seen online. (Fusion)
  • Actor Alex Rocco, known to sitcom fans for his role on The Facts of Life, died this week at age 79. (NBC
  • It looks as if Syfy is going to milk their Sharknado franchise for as much as they possibly can, as Sharknado 4 has already gotten the greenlight for next year. (Yahoo)
  • Changes are coming to MeTV this fall, including the addition of Matlock. (SitcomsOnline)

HOME MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Moving ahead with re-releases of things previously released by Sony, it looks as if re-releases of the complete series of both Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie will be coming October 6 from Mill Creek.
  • Shout! Factory released Mr. Belvedere - Season Four as a Shout! Select release several years ago, but it seems these days that Shout! Select has ceased to exist and that all releases are coming through traditional retailers. While most of the older releases have not been released in such a manner yet, it looks like Mr. Belvedere - Season Four is on the verge of being released in that manner.

FOLLOW ME

Who to Follow: Jean-Luc Bilodeau (Twitter), "canadian actor dude"
Claim to Fame: We tend to neglect a lot of the cable sitcom stars on our Follow Me, but this week, we're featuring one, Jean-Luc Bilodeau. He is currently the star of the ABC Family sitcom Baby Daddy, where he plays a young man whose life is turned upside down when a baby (who turns out to be his daughter) shows up on his doorstep... sort of like cable's version of Raising Hope. This isn't the first ABC Family series for the Canadian actor, though. He first appeared as a regular on the series Kyle XY. Between the end of that series and the beginning of this series, he did a few Nickelodeon movies and a Disney Channel movie, and also made guest appearances on No Ordinary Family and Supernatural.
Pick of the Tweets: "Needless to say, we had a good time at the @abcfamily upfronts. #babydaddy shutting it down as usual. " (April 14, 2015)

TV Land's New Original Comedy Hour Starts Strong; Lifetime's Unauthorized Story of 90210 and Melrose Premieres in October

The Jim Gaffigan Show Impastor

The premieres of TV Land's newest original series premieres boasted impressive numbers, with The Jim Gaffigan Show attracting a gross audience of 3.2 million total viewers on TV Land, Nick at Nite and Comedy Central, and Impastor attracting 1.7 million gross total viewers on TV Land and Nick at Nite (Live+3). The July 15 premiere for both shows, which kicked off at 10 pm on TV Land and Nick at Nite, reached 5.6 million viewers (L+3, 1 min. qualifier, P2+, 6 telecasts, Total US). Compared to channel prime average, The Jim Gaffigan Show premiere on TV Land was up 178%. The Jim Gaffigan Show ranked #5 on Nielsen's Twitter TV rankings for the night. An encore of the series premiere of The Jim Gaffigan Show was telecast on Comedy Central on July 16 and reached 1.1 million viewers (L+3, 1 min. qualifier, P2+, CMDY Cov. Area). The TV Land premiere of Impastor had a +21% increase over channel prime average.

Beverly Hills 90210 Unauthorized Cast

Ah, the 1990s. Sideburns, frosted tips, slap bracelets, fanny packs and, of course, the launch of two shows that made television history -- Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place. In a Lifetime "throw back-to–back" weekend event, The Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210 Story premieres Saturday, October 3, at 8pm ET/PT and The Unauthorized Melrose Place Story follows on Saturday, October 10, at 8pm ET/PT. The movies are the latest in Lifetime's Unauthorized Story film franchise and revisit two of the decade's most iconic programs and reveal what transpired behind the scenes during the cast members' rise to fame. An international pop culture phenomenon, Beverly Hills, 90210 ruled the '90s television landscape and reigned as the top teen show for nearly a decade during which Jason Priestley, Luke Perry, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling became household names. The Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210 Story reveals the roller coaster ride behind the show's first four seasons, highlighting the drama between cast members and producers both on and off-set as they journeyed together from near-cancelation to unparalled fame and success.

Melrose Place Unauthorized Story Cast

Launched in 1992 as a companion for Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place quickly became a giant television hit in its own right. Originally designed to be an authentic, grounded look at 20-something life in Los Angeles, the program soon became 90210's soapier, yet equally popular counterpart. The Unauthorized Melrose Place Story highlights the remarkable behind-the-scenes moments that shaped the series including early casting drama, Heather Locklear arriving to "save" Melrose Place, and the actors begging their writers for even wilder storylines to make them fan favorites.

ABC Family Moves Buffy to Mornings; FXX Schedules Final Season of The League and 2nd Season of You're the Worst

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Starting on Monday (July 27) ABC Family will make some last minute schedule changes to its line-up. Buffy the Vampire Slayer will move to 7am replacing That '70s Show Monday-Friday until further notice, but That '70s Show will remain from 8-9am. Boy Meets World will replace The Middle Monday-Friday from 1-2pm, as The Middle replaces Reba Monday-Friday from 3-4pm (so The Middle is now 2-4pm). Why because Reba replaces Buffy the Vampire Slayer Monday-Friday at 5pm. Reba will now air 4-6pm. No reason for the changes, but it looks like Buffy might have underperformed in the ratings at 5pm, so it will move to 7am. Fellow recently added series Dawson's Creek will remain at 12 noon following Gilmore Girls at 11am, as they seem to be doing well together. No shows will be leaving the line-up with these changes, though.

The League You're the Worst

FXX is the destination for comedy this fall with the seventh and final season of its hit comedy series The League and the second season of the acclaimed comedy You're the Worst. Season seven of The League will premiere on FXX on Wednesday, September 9 at 10 PM e/p, immediately followed by the second season of You're the Worst at 10:30 PM e/p. To be a fan of FXX's The League, you don't need to know much about fantasy football, or sports at all. You just need to have friends that you hate. The ensemble comedy follows a group of old friends in a fantasy football league who care very deeply ... about beating each other for bragging rights. You're the Worst is a modern look at love and happiness told through the eyes of two people who haven't been very successful with either. It's the story of Gretchen and Jimmy, fear, heartbreak, romance, sex, food, Los Angeles, Sunday Funday, friendship, and the fact that sometimes the worst people make the best partners.

TBS Fall 2015 Schedule Part 1 with New Girl; Carol Burnett Will Be Honored at 2016 SAG Awards

New Girl

As we mentioned already many moons ago that TBS has acquired the rights to New Girl and 2 Broke Girls for Fall 2015. New Girl will be shared with Viacom's MTV and we will have details on that show on MTV at a later date. Back to TBS, they will premiere New Girl with a 24-hour marathon on Sunday, Aug. 16 (early Monday) at 1am and will run through Monday, Aug. 17 1pm before settling into its regular timeslot of weekdays at 3pm & 3:30pm, as Friends moves from 3-5pm to 4-6pm and Seinfeld gets cut to 6-8pm (rather than 5-8pm). No other changes will be made during this time. On Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 7), TBS will offer mini-marathons of The Office from 6am-12pm and Friends from 12pm-6pm. As for 2 Broke Girls, the sitcom will premiere in primetime in mid-September...but we will have details on that at a later date as everything gets finalized. Stay tuned, but for now get ready for Zooey Deschanel and gang on TBS!

New Girl stars the Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated Zooey Deschanel as Jess, a smart and spirited woman navigating her way through the highs and lows of modern friendship and romance with her male roommates (Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris and Damon Wayans Jr.) and best friend (Hannah Simone).

Carol Burnett

Carol Burnett – comedic trailblazer, actor, singer, dancer, producer and author – has been named the 52nd recipient of SAG-AFTRA's highest tribute: the SAG Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment. Burnett will be presented the performers union's top accolade at the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards®, which will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 at 8PM ET/7PM CT/6PM MT/5PM PT. Given annually to an actor who fosters the "finest ideals of the acting profession," the SAG Life Achievement Award will join Burnett's exceptional catalog of preeminent industry and public honors, which includes multiple Emmys®, a special Tony®, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and both a Kennedy Center Honor and its Mark Twain Prize for Humor. The public and her peers treasure Carol Burnett for her comedic and dramatic roles on television, film, and Broadway, most notably The Carol Burnett Show. Named in 2007 by TIME magazine as one of "100 Best Television Shows of All Time," and by Variety in 2011 as one of "The 25 Shows That Changed Television," The Carol Burnett Show ran for 11 years, averaged 30 million viewers per week, and received 25 Emmy Awards, making it one of the most honored shows in television history.
