It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

It's fall (or at least almost fall), which means a few things: cooler weather, pumpkin spice flavored everything, and...a brand new slate of network sitcoms! Now, that was a much more exciting prospect even 5 or 10 years ago. As cable and streaming services have boomed, it feels increasingly less like there's a real "TV season - even the networks themselves aren't always restricting themselves to the old September to May model, with many promising shows being held for mid-season and airing shorter seasons. Yet, the networks will still trot out a whole bunch of new shows this fall. I'll be taking a closer look at each show over the next few weeks, but I thought I'd take this week's column to give my opinion on the overall slate of sitcoms and what shows I'm particularly keeping an eye on.

Last fall was a pretty weak one for new sitcoms, and frankly, this fall isn't all that much better. You can very clearly see the response to the success of the Roseanne reboot in this fall's sitcom slate, as many of the buzziest prospects on networks are actually revivals - from the revived Murphy Brown to the "re-imagined" version of the Roseanne reboot The Conners to the also "revived" Last Man Standing. Expect these shows to get a lot of buzz regardless of quality - especially since, frankly, the rest of the slate is pretty weak. Still, there's a couple of shows I'll be keeping my own. Fox largely destroyed its comedy block at Upfronts this past spring, but it is premiering new series Rel, starring The Carmichael Show's Lil Rel Howery. Howery was a strong part of Carmichael, so it'll be interesting to see him in a new role. I'll also be keeping an eye on ABC's Single Parents, which gets the post-Modern Family slot and stars SNL alum Taran Killam. That suggests it should at least be watchable if ABC is giving it that plum slot, right? Plus, Killam is a great comedic talent who should bring liveliness to the role regardless of the quality of the rest of the show. I'm also interested in NBC's I Feel Bad, which is produced by Amy Poehler and stars Sarayu Blue in her first TV role. It's interesting to see Poehler giving a chance to a fresh voice, and I'll be keeping an eye out. Finally, Fox will be pairing its revived Last Man Standing with The Cool Kids, a multi-camera sitcom about a retirement home...which sort of shows you the audience they'll be courting for their Friday night comedy block. Oh, and CBS is premiering a drama called God Friended Me, about...a podcast host who becomes friends with God. It certainly has the potential to be the most, uh, interesting show of the fall.

Frankly, if you're someone who believes network sitcoms are losing their relevancy, this slate of sitcoms may not change your mind. But I'm an optimist who believes great shows like The Good Place, Superstore and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are proving the network sitcom can still be excellent, so I'll be hoping these shows defy the odds and step up to the plate.

TV Guide has launched its first-ever 100 Best Shows list. Ahead of the fall TV season, TV Guide's team of editors and pop culture experts have curated the site's first annual ranking of the best shows available to watch right now. TV Guide's 100 Best Shows ranking focuses on highlighting what the editorial team believes to be the most outstanding shows right now. Eligibility is limited to ongoing shows that have at least one more season slated to air.

Several TV creators stood out among their peers with more than one show on the list, including Michael Schur (The Good Place and Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag and Killing Eve). Dancing with the Stars is waltzing its way into its upcoming season, and the new celebrity cast is adding some glitzy bling to their wardrobe, breaking in their dancing shoes and readying themselves for their first dance on the ballroom floor, as the season kicks off Monday, Sept. 24 from 8:00-10:00 p.m. EDT, on The ABC Television Network, streaming and on demand. This season's lineup of celebrity dancers includes an American Idol mentor, the first-ever blind contestant to take part in the show, an alumnus from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a Duke of Hazzard, an Olympic Gold medal-winning gymnast, sitcom stars of The Facts of Life & Fuller House and a Bachelor Nation favorite, among others.

As announced yesterday morning on ABC's Good Morning America, the celebrities with their professional dance partners heading to the ballroom this season (in alphabetical order) are the following:

Continuing its commitment to fund innovative efforts in STEM education, The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation (TCLFF) announced the creation of a new grant program - The Young Sheldon STEM Initiative - inspired by the hit comedy series Young Sheldon. The program was created to foster excitement for learning in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), specifically in support of our nation's public schools, teachers and students. Young Sheldon executive producer/TCLFF founder Chuck Lorre enrolled fellow Young Sheldon executive producers Steven Molaro and Jim Parsons, Warner Bros. Television Group and CBS to co-fund two-year educational grants totaling more than $600,000.00 which will be awarded to 19 select elementary, middle and high schools in Southern California, where Young Sheldon is primarily produced, and East Texas, where the show is set.

Young Sheldon executive producer/The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons attended three of the selected East Texas schools. And, Young Sheldon co-star Montana Jordan, who plays Sheldon's brother Georgie, attended one of the Texas schools, where his mother also taught first grade. Each of the 19 public school grant recipients will be acknowledged as a Young Sheldon STEM Initiative Grant Recipient and will receive a two-year grant from TCLFF which is specifically to support each school's STEM teachers and STEM educational programs within their existing in-class curriculum and/or after-school programs. In addition to the direct grant funding to each school, the Young Sheldon STEM Initiative will also fully fund all costs for an annual experiential opportunity for students and teachers in and outside the classroom. Each school will be eligible to submit for continuation grants at the end of the two-year period.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) are pleased to announce that the 24th Annual Critics' Choice Awards will air LIVE on The CW Network on Sunday, January 13, 2019 (7:00-10:00p.m. Live ET/ Delayed PT). The show will continue its combined Film and Television awards format, honoring the finest in both cinematic and televised/streaming achievement, and take place once again at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. The 23rd annual Critics' Choice Awards were hosted by actress and activist Olivia Munn. The Shape of Water was the most nominated film and it took home four awards, the most of the night, including Best Picture and Best Director. The top film acting awards were bestowed upon Gary Oldman, who took home Best Actor for his work in Darkest Hour, and Frances McDormand, awarded Best Actress for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. McDormand's co-star Sam Rockwell won the trophy for Best Supporting Actor, while Best Supporting Actress went to Allison Janney for her standout performance in I, Tonya.

IFC announced details of two episodes from the upcoming season of Documentary Now!, the Emmy(R)-nominated comedy co-created by Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, Seth Meyers and Rhys Thomas and executive produced by Lorne Michaels. The new titles, "Any Given Saturday Afternoon" and "Long Gone," join the previously announced episodes "Original Cast Album: Co-Op" and "Waiting for the Artist." Known for lovingly paying homage to the world of documentaries, Season 52 of Documentary Now! premieres Wednesday, February 20 at 10PM on IFC with seven all-new episodes. Inspired by the 2006 professional bowling documentary League of Ordinary Gentlemen, "Any Given Saturday Afternoon" follows the new maverick head of marketing for the Professional Bowling League, Rob Seger (Kevin Dunn, Veep), through a season on the pro-bowling circuit with top bowlers Billy May Dempsey (Michael C. Hall, Dexter), Rick Kenmore (Tim Robinson, Detroiters) and Larry Hawburger (Bobby Moynihan, Saturday Night Live). Guest stars this season include Michael C. Hall, Natasha Lyonne, Kevin Dunn, Bobby Moynihan and Tim Robinson.

The twice Emmy(R)-nominated Documentary Now! debuted to rave reviews from critics and quickly became a fan favorite thanks to its insightful take on some of the most well-known documentary films. Each episode, hosted by Dame Helen Mirren, takes viewers back in time to honor groundbreaking documentaries. Guest stars from previous seasons include Faye Dunaway, Mia Farrow, Maya Rudolph, John Slattery and more.

NBC is adding five episodes to its original 13-episode order for the award-winning comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, bringing the total to 18 episodes for the 2018-19 season. The sixth season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine will premiere on NBC in midseason. NBC acquired Brooklyn Nine-Nine in May during the Upfront. The comedy stars Andy Samberg as Det. Jake Peralta; Andre Braugher as Capt. Ray Holt; Terry Crews as Sgt. Terry Jeffords; Melissa Fumero as Det. Amy Santiago; Joe Lo Truglio as Det. Charles Boyle; Chelsea Peretti as Gina Linetti; Stephanie Beatriz as Det. Rosa Diaz; Dirk Blocker as Det. Hitchcock; Joel McKinnon Miller as Det. Scully Executive producers are Michael Schur, Dan Goor, David Miner and Luke Del Tredici.

Production has begun on Sydney to the Max, a daughter/father comedy series created by Emmy(R) Award-nominated writer, showrunner and executive producer Mark Reisman (Frasier, The Exes, Wings). The multi-camera series is scheduled to premiere in early 2019 on Disney Channel. A heartwarming and sentimental comedy, Sydney to the Max centers around the experiences of a sociable, goodhearted middle schooler named Sydney Reynolds and her protective, doting - and sometimes clueless! - single dad Max as they navigate the challenges of growing up. Set during two timeframes, decades apart, flashback scenes to young Max and his best friend Leo in the 1990s parallel many of the funny predicaments Sydney and her BFF Olive get themselves into. VHS camcorders, bleached skater hair and other '90s-defining "relics" aside, Sydney and Max come to realize, aided by Sydney's kicky grandmother Judy, who's well-versed in Max's childhood antics, that they have more in common than either realizes.

Thirteen-year-old actress Ruth Righi (School of Rock) leads the cast as title character Sydney. Adult Max is played by Ian Reed Kesler (Suits, Kickin' It), while young Max is played by newcomer Jackson Dollinger (Puppy Dog Pals). Caroline Rhea (Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, Phineas and Ferb) is Ruth's grandma Judy, seen in both decades. Ruth's best friend Olive is played by Ava Kolker (Girl Meets World), while young Max's best friend Leo is played by Christian J. Simon (The Amazing World of Gumball).

COZI TV is bringing back The Office to broadcast TV. The network has announced that the iconic workplace sitcom will have a new home when the critically acclaimed hit begins airing on COZI TV on January 1, 2019. The show will join Will & Grace and Frasier as part of the network's prime time comedy line-up.

The Office premiered in 2005 on NBC and ran for nine seasons with 201 episodes. Based on the British series of the same name, The Office won numerous awards during its run including five Emmy® awards out of 42 nominations. The series also launched the careers of Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, Mindy Kaling, B. J. Novak and others. The success of its trademark deadpan style, produced without a laugh track or musical scoring, helped popularized the mockumentary genre in American television.

The show was set in the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company of Scranton, Pennsylvania, the apparent subject of a documentary film. Carell played Michael Scott, the always inappropriate and desperate for approval Regional Manager. Krasinski played salesman Jim Halpert, Fischer played Pam the receptionist and Wilson was Dwight Schrute, the Assistant Regional Sales Manager.

Over the course of the series, fans followed the romance of Jim and Pam, the endless prank-fueled rivalry between Dwight and Jim, Michael's own inter-office romances and the comings and goings of a variety of corporate supervisors, HR advisors, and other instigators. Memorable moments include the "Office Olympics," a Survivor-style competition to determine the branch's next manager, the "Dundies" award shows, and, of course, Jim and Pam's wedding.

Actor, director and producer Burt Reynolds, who starred as Wood Newton in Evening Shade, has died. He died on September 6 at the Jupiter Medical Center in Jupiter, Florida. He had suffered heart problems for a number of years. Mr. Reynolds was 82.

Reynolds' early television guest appearances included Flight, M Squad, Schlitz Playhouse, The Lawless Years and Pony Express. His first starring role was with Darren McGavin in the NBC adventure series Riverboat from 1959 to 1960. He appeared in 20 episodes as Ben Frazier, the colead and boat pilot for The Enterprise.

Some of his other early 1960s television guest appearances included Playhouse 90, Johnny Ringo, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Lock Up, The Blue Angels, Michael Shayne, Zane Grey Theater, The Aquanauts, The Brothers Brannagan, Naked City, Ripcord, Everglades, Route 66, Perry Mason and The Twilight Zone.

His next starring role was in the CBS western Gunsmoke from 1962 to 1965. He appeared as Quint Asper, the town blacksmith, in 50 episodes of the series. He continued to make guest appearances on series such as Branded, Flipper and 12 O'Clock High.

He starred as Native American Detective Lt. John Hawk in the short-lived 1966 ABC police drama Hawk. The series also starred Wayne Grice, Bruce Glover and Leon Janney. Reynolds directed one episode of the series. Some of his other 1960s and 1970s guest appearances included The F.B.I., Premiere, Fade In and Love, American Style.

Reynolds starred as Detective Lt. Dan August in the 1970-1971 ABC police drama Dan August. Dan August investigated homicide cases in the fictional town of Santa Luisa, California. The series also starred Norman Fell, Ned Romero, Richard Anderson and Ena Hartmann.

He provided the voice of Troy Garland, Evie Garland's (Maureen Flanigan) father, in the 1987-1991 syndicated sitcom Out of This World. The series also starred Donna Pescow, Doug McClure, Joe Alaskey (1987-1990), Buzz Belmondo, Christina Nigra and Steve Burton.

Reynolds starred in the short-lived 1989-1990 ABC detective series B.L. Stryker. Buddy Lee Stryker, aka B.L., was a Vietnam war vet and retired New Orleans police officer who moved back home to the other side of the tracks in Palm Beach, Florida to work as a private investigator. The series starred Ossie Davis, Dana Kaminski, Michael O. Smith, Alfie Wise and Rita Moreno. Reynolds also served as an executive producer and directed three episodes of the series.

His longest running television role was in the 1990-1994 CBS sitcom Evening Shade. Reynolds starred as Wood Newton, an ex-professional football player for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who returns to rural Evening Shade, Arkansas, to coach a high-school football team with a long losing streak. The series also starred Marilu Henner, Hal Holbrook, Ossie Davis, Charles Durning, Elizabeth Ashley, Michael Jeter, Jay R. Ferguson, Ann Wedgeworth, Charlie Dell, Candace Hutson and Jacob Parker. Reynolds won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical for the role in 1992. He also directed 35 episodes and wrote 3 episodes of the series. He was one of the executive producers.

Some of his other sitcom guest appearances included The Golden Girls, The Larry Sanders Show, Hope & Gloria, Cybill, Emeril, The King of Queens, Freddie and My Name Is Earl. His voice credits included King of the Hill, Duckman, Robot Chicken, Duck Dodgers, American Dad! and Archer.

Reynolds was best known for his many film roles. His box office hits included Deliverance, The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit, Semi-Tough, Hooper (also a producer), Smokey and the Bandit II, The Cannonball Run and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. He directed and starred in Gator (the sequel to White Lightning), The End, Sharky's Machine, Stick and The Last Producer. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Jack Horner in Boogie Nights.

Mr. Reynolds was wonderful in his many television and film roles. Hopefully the complete series of Evening Shade will be released on DVD one day. We thank him for the many laughs and hours of entertainment he brought us during his 50-year career. He will be greatly missed.

Actor and comedian Bill Daily, who was best known for his roles as Roger Healey in I Dream of Jeannie and as Howard Borden in The Bob Newhart Show, has died. He died on September 4 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mr. Daily was 91.

Daily's early work was as a stand-up comedian performing around the country. He made sitcom guest appearances in Bewitched, My Mother the Car and The Farmer's Daughter. Sitcom writer Sidney Sheldon liked his work and gave him a supporting role in I Dream of Jeannie.

He starred as Captain/Major Roger Healey in the 1965-1970 NBC sitcom I Dream of Jeannie. Roger Healey was Tony Nelson's (Larry Hagman) girl-crazy buddy and fellow astronaut. The series also starred Barbara Eden and Hayden Rorke. Daily wrote one episode of the series. He reprised his role in TV reunion movies I Dream of Jeannie... Fifteen Years Later in 1985 and I Still Dream of Jeannie in 1991.

Daily next starred as Howard Borden in the 1972-1978 CBS sitcom The Bob Newhart Show. Howard Borden was a divorced commercial airline navigator and later a co-captain. He was the next-door neighbor of Bob Hartley (Bob Newhart) and his wife, Emily (Suzanne Pleshette). The series also starred Peter Bonerz and Marcia Wallace. Daily returned for The Bob Newhart Show: The 19th Anniversary Special in 1991.

He co-starred with Debbie Reynolds in the short-lived 1981 ABC sitcom Aloha Paradise. The series followed the lives of the staff and guests at The Paradise Village resort, located on the coast of Kona, Hawaii. Daily played Curtis Shea, the resort's assistant manager. It also starred Pat Klous, Mokihana and Stephen Shortridge.

Daily appeared as Dr. Hanratty in the short-lived 1983 CBS sitcom Small & Frye. Dr. Hanratty was the eccentric head of the Police Criminal Lab. The series also starred Darren McGavin, Jack Blessing, Debbie Zipp, Warren Berlinger, Victoria Carroll and Dick Wilson.

He starred as veterinarian Dr. James Shepherd in the 1988-1989 syndicated sitcom Starting from Scratch. The series also starred Connie Stevens, Heidi Helmer, Jason Marin and Nita Talbot.

Some of his other sitcom guest appearances included Love, American Style, Getting Together, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Love Boat, ALF, The Munsters Today, The Naked Truth and Caroline in the City. He reunited with Bob Newhart in Newhart, Bob and George and Leo. His other television guest appearances included Flying High, CHiPs, The Powers of Matthew Star and Trapper John, M.D..

He was interviewed for The Interviews: An Oral History of Television in 2003.

Mr. Daily was very funny and memorable in his roles as the sidekick in I Dream of Jeannie and The Bob Newhart Show. We thank him for the laughs and entertainment he brought us in his series and guest appearances. He will be deeply missed.

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! It's been a short week due to the holiday on Monday, but it has been busy, with news about an attempted shaming of a Cosby Show actor that turned the attention to the reality of how hard most actors have to work, the death of actor Burt Reynolds, and of course, another reboot that is in the works. Let's get going!

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

From every generation, it seems there's at least a few shows that rise above the others and stand the test of time, to the point where they almost feel distinct from their eras. These shows play endlessly in syndication to the point where future generations attatch to them just as much as fans did in their original run. In the '80s, that show was Cheers, in the '90s, it was Friends and Seinfeld and in the '00s, I think we're far enough removed to pick what show that is - The Office.

This isn't to slam other '00s-era comedies like Arrested Development, 30 Rock or Scrubs, or even multi-cam hits from the era like Everybody Loves Raymond - all shows I enjoy. However, The Office has reached a ubiquity that few shows are able to achieve in their life spans. Fans young and old have been finding the show on Netflix and falling in love with its cringe-awkward humor, clever one-liners, and surprisingly enthralling character dynamics. Those other shows have prevailed, too, but just like Cheers, Seinfeld and Friends before it, The Office seems to be becoming a universal, timeless series not specifically tied to the era it aired in. You wouldn't think of The Office as "a 2000s show" just as you don't necessarily immediately think of the '80s with Cheers - it's a universal series whose humor and character development can be accessible for anyone.

So why is The Office so prevailingly prevalent? Personally, I'd say that the show's form of existential-dread humor mixed with heartfelt character moments fits in perfectly with the current comedy landscape - it's not hard to draw a line from The Office to 2010s "sadcoms" like Bojack Horseman or You're the Worst, which similarly balance a goofy sense of humor with in-depth characterization. Additionally, The Office was never particularly tapped into current culture - much like Seinfeld and Cheers. While the show made occasional pop culture references, it was mostly grounded in the reality of Dunder-Mifflin. That allows people - no matter their age or when they're watching it - to relate to the show's antics. Additionally, the show's setting is universal and relatable to many people - most of us have jobs, and we all can relate to the feelings of dread, boredom, amusement, and surprise that come with them, as well as the basic archetypes of the show's characters, just as the bar on Cheers was a place where "everyone knew your name" (something we could all relate to). All of this means that I expect The Office to grow in popularity rather than lose it, and I wouldn't be surprised if we're still talking about the show's enduring popularity years down the road.

Netflix to bring Designated Survivor to viewers around the world as a global original series. Designated Survivor will return for a third season as a global Netflix original, following its two-season run on ABC. The political drama starring Kiefer Sutherland will be helmed by showrunner Neal Baer from global studio Entertainment One (eOne). Netflix has ordered 10 episodes. In season three, President Kirkman (Sutherland) will face a political reality... campaigning. What does it take to make a leader? What price will he be willing to pay? This season will explore today's world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and "fake news." Democracy, as we know it, will hang in the balance. Why celebrate the spookiest time of the year for only 13 nights when you can celebrate for 31!? Freeform has expanded their annual Halloween programming event to "31 Nights of Halloween" bringing more thrills and chills to the entire month. Emmy Award-winning producer Dick Wolf brings Law & Order: Hate Crimes to audiences beginning with a 13-episode order from NBC. Co-created with former Law & Order: Special Victims Unit showrunner Warren Leight, the latest installment of the enduring and wildly popular Law & Order franchise is based on New York's actual Hate Crimes Task Force, the second oldest bias-based task force in the U.S. The unit, which pledges to uphold a zero tolerance policy against discrimination of any kind, works under the NYPD's real Special Victims Unit and often borrows SVU's detectives to assist in their investigations. The first incarnation of this new unit will be introduced in the latter part of the upcoming 20th season of SVU.

Law & Order: Hate Crimes is set in New York City, where crimes motivated by discrimination are vigorously investigated by an elite, specially trained team of investigators. Going behind the headlines and viral videos, these diverse, dedicated and passionate detectives will stop at nothing to bring these criminals to justice.

Showtime has released the series premiere of its new comedy Kidding early across multiple platforms. ION will entertain us by airing a Criminal Minds Labor Day marathon from 11am-3am. USA Network has a Labor Day marathon for Law & Order: SVU mixed in with Chicago P.D. from 5am-6pm. Heroes & Icons has a Nash Bridges marathon from 11am-8pm.
