Paramount+ Gets The Neighborhood Spin-Off; First Look at Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik Reunion on Young Sheldon

Tracy Morgan - Crutch

Paramount+ announced a new series order for Crutch, a half-hour multi-camera comedy starring Tracy Morgan, which will be set in the world of the CBS Networks' hit comedy The Neighborhood. The series centers on its titular character, Francois "Frank" Crutchfield (Morgan) - or "Crutch" to those that know him well - a Harlem widower whose empty nest plans are put on hold after his millennial son and free-spirited daughter move back home. The series is produced by CBS Studios and is slated to begin production later this year. Hailing from Cedric The Entertainer and his production company, A Bird and a Bear Entertainment, the series is executive produced by Cedric and Eric C. Rhone; along with Owen Smith, who wrote the premiere script and will also serve as showrunner; Aaron Kaplan for Kapital Entertainment; Wendi Trilling for TrillTV; and Tracy Morgan. The series also reunites Morgan with Smith, who served as showrunner and executive producer on The Last O.G. in which Morgan starred.

Crutch is the latest series to join Paramount+'s growing lineup of original comedies like Frasier, Colin from Accounts and dark comedy Tulsa King, all of which will return for new seasons this fall. In addition, Paramount+ is the subscription streaming home to CBS' lineup of acclaimed comedies including Ghosts, The Neighborhood, Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Mayim Bialik and Jim Parsons - Young Sheldon

Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik reprise their roles of Sheldon Cooper and Amy Farrah Fowler in the series finale of Young Sheldon, Thursday, May 16 (8:00-8:31 PM, ET/PT and 8:31 - 9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs), and we have a first look for you! The pair last appeared on screen together in The Big Bang Theory series finale, which aired in May 2019. Parsons serves as an executive producer and the narrator of Young Sheldon. Bialik has also appeared in voiceover form in two episodes of the series. This marks the first on-camera return of their characters.

Created by Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, Young Sheldon centers on Sheldon Cooper, a once-in-a-generation mind capable of advanced mathematics and science, which isn't always helpful in a land where church and football are king. And while the vulnerable, gifted and somewhat naïve Sheldon deals with the world, his very normal family must find a way to deal with him. For 12 years on The Big Bang Theory, audiences came to know the iconic, eccentric and extraordinary Sheldon Cooper. This single-camera, half-hour comedy takes viewers through his childhood, as he embarks on his innocent, awkward and hopeful journey toward the man he will become.

SitcomsOnline Digest: MeTV Announces MeTV Toons; Night Court Renewed for Third Season

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! It's been a crazy busy week this week with the announcement of a MeTV spinoff, lots of Paramount news, renewals and cancelations, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • We mentioned that there were rumors of this a few months ago, but MeTV Toons, a spinoff of MeTV dedicated to classic cartoons, is coming next month, and if no local channel in your area decides to pick it up, it appears it will also be available on ad-supported streaming services. (Variety)
  • The Paramount cable networks have temporarily avoided being pulled by Spectrum this week as their agreement ended while negotiations continue, but it still isn't looking great as Spectrum's goal seems to be to remove anything that isn't a top rated cable network. (Deadline)
  • Meanwhile, Paramount is still for sale, and a joint partnership between Sony and Apollo Management is the most recent offer, but some analysts feel that a sale may never actually occur. (Variety)
  • Night Court has secured a third season at NBC, and while it may not be quite a full season, it will come close. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • This is one we didn't see coming as it was widely expected that the current season would be the last, but ABC is reportedly renewing The Conners for one last (very short) season. (TVLine)
  • For the first time since he was fired by the network 19 years ago, Dan Rather is set to return to CBS News as the subject of an interview about his career at CBS News. (The Hollywood Reporter)
  • It's that time of the year, and we've got the CBS fall lineup, which is very light on sitcoms and includes a new version of Hollywood Squares with Drew Barrymore hosting. (SitcomsOnline)

Hasan Minhaj: Off With His Head Comedy Tour Expands Into June & July, Including at NJPAC; Comedy Central Orders Golden Axe

Hasan Minhaj: Off With His Head

Comedian and TV star Hasan Minhaj is on tour for his comedy Off With His Head since September and the tour is expanding into June & July now with more venues and dates added. Hasan Minhaj is as fearless as ever in his entertaining new stand-up show. With his signature irreverent wit, he tackles controversy head-on — from politics to immigration to parenting. The Emmy and Peabody-winning comedian is best known for his Netflix series Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj. He previously served as a correspondent on The Daily Show with both Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah. His comedy specials Homecoming King and The King's Jester are currently on Netflix.

One of the new June additions is in New Jersey. Hasan Minhaj is returning to New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, NJ with this comedy night on Saturday, June 15 at 7PM. Tickets are now on sale. Don't miss your chance to experience this amazing comedy tour by purchasing tickets at NJPAC.org, calling 888.GO.NJPAC (888.466.5722) or by visiting the NJPAC Box Office. Not in the NJ/NY metro area, view other cities on Ticketmaster.

Golden Axe

Comedy Central announced a 10-episode order of Golden Axe, a new animated series based on the popular Sega video game series, featuring a star-studded cast including Emmy(R) award winner Matthew Rhys, Danny Pudi, Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre and Carl Tart. The series is produced by CBS Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film. In a hilarious and loving homage to Sega's 1989 video game series, Golden Axe follows veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won't seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib on their side.

Matthew Rhys (The Americans, Perry Mason, Brothers and Sisters) will play Gilius Thunderhead, a grumpy battle dwarf with exceptionally poor hygiene and a chip on his shoulder. Danny Pudi (Mythic Quest, Community) as Hampton Squib, a naive, inexperienced first time adventurer who has dreamt of questing his entire life. He hopes his can-do attitude can make up for his inability to actually do stuff. Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty, Interior Chinatown) as Tyris Flare, a fearsome battle sorceress, deadly in a fight and even deadlier with her sharp wit. Liam McIntyre (Spartacus, The Flash) as Ax Battler, a barbarian warrior with a strict code of honor and sweet golden retriever demeanor. His brawn outweighs his brains, but his heart outweighs his brawn. Carl Tart (Grand Crew, Star Trek: Lower Decks) as Chronos "Evil" Lait, originally from Golden Axe III, is a 100% badass humanoid panther. At least that's how Chronos describes himself. In reality he's uncomfortably cheesy and can't read a room. Fans can anticipate plenty of exciting cameos from the world of Golden Axe.
