NBC Mid-Season 2013 Schedule: 1600 Penn Premieres January 10, Community Returns February 7; ABC Gives The Neighbors and Scandal Full-Season Orders
NBC has announced their 2013 primetime mid-season schedule. Three new series will be making their debuts. 1600 Penn, starring Bill Pullman and Jenna Elfman, is a comedy about a typical American family who just happen to live in the White House. It debuts on Thursday, January 10 at 9:30pm ET/PT. Deception (formerly Infamous) is an intriguing drama starring Meagan Good, Victor Garber, Tate Donovan and Katherine LaNasa. The dark family murder mystery premieres on Monday, January 7 at 10pm ET/PT. Ready for Love is an innovative and dramatic new relationship show about making real connections with executive producer Eva Longoria. It will debut on Sunday, March 31 at 8-10pm ET/PT. Returning favorites include The Biggest Loser, Betty White's Off Their Rockers, Smash, Community, The Celebrity Apprentice, Revolution and The Voice.
Mondays will have a new season of The Biggest Loser that will feature some innovative changes to the format and the return of trainer Jillian Michaels. It will return with a two-night premiere on Sunday, January 6 at 9-11pm ET/PT and Monday, January 7 at 8-10pm ET/PT. It will remain on Mondays until the return of The Voice on March 25. New drama Deception will follow The Biggest Loser at 10pm ET/PT. The fourth cycle of The Voice will debut on Monday, March 25 at 8-10pm ET/PT and Tuesday, March 26 at 8-9pm ET/PT. New coaches Usher and Shakira will be part of the show, which continues its two-night Monday/Tuesday schedule as it did this fall. Hit drama Revolution will return on March 25 at 10-11pm ET/PT. It will conclude its fall run in November, so that will be quite a long break for it.
Tuesdays will have the return of acclaimed musical drama Smash with a two-hour episode featuring Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson on February 5 at 9-11pm ET/PT. It will move February 12 to its regular day and time of 10-11pm ET/PT. A new season Betty White's Off Their Rockers will premiere on January 8 with back-to-back episodes at 8:00pm and 8:30pm ET/PT. Two episodes will air in that hour each week. The Voice will take that timeslot beginning March 26.
No changes for Wednesdays have been announced. As we previously mentioned, Whitney takes over for the canceled Animal Practice on November 14 at 8pm ET/PT. It will be followed by Guys with Kids, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Chicago Fire.
Moving on, Thursdays will have the premiere of the new White House comedy 1600 Penn on January 10 at 9:30pm ET/PT. It comes from co-creator and director Jason Winer, who is an Emmy-winning director of Modern Family. Critical favorite Community returns to its former timeslot of 8:00pm ET/PT on February 7. Parks and Recreation will be moving up one hour to 8:30PM ET/PT on January 17. As we mentioned yesterday, Up All Night is going on a winter break and will be switching to a multi-camera format for its final five episodes of the season. It will return in April/May.
Fridays and Saturdays have no schedule changes announced at the moment. Sundays will have the new relationship series Ready for Love from Eva Longoria. It will premiere on Sunday, March 31 at 8-10pm ET/PT. An "All-Star" edition of The Celebrity Apprentice will debut on March 3 at 9-11pm ET/PT. It will air for two hours for four weeks before shifting to one-hour episodes beginining March 31 at 10-11pm ET/PT.
Several shows will be wrapping up soon. 30 Rock will conclude its 13-episode season with an one-hour series finale. Parenthood is finishing its 15-episode season in January. Premiere dates haven't been announced for the Anne Heche comedy Save Me or the dramas Do No Harm and Hannibal. Stay with us for any updates.
What do you think of NBC's mid-season schedule? Discuss it on our message board.
ABC has given a full-season order to its freshman comedy The Neighbors. The series about a human family living in a neighborhood of aliens has performed decently in the ratings. It has been pretty consistent in its Wednesday timeslot by averaging 6.8 million viewers and beating NBC's new comedy Guys with Kids. Not surprisingly, it does well in the kids 2-11 and teens 12-17 demos.
Sophomore drama Scandal has been picked up for its first full season. The Shonda Rhimes political thriller starring Kerry Washington is doing solid ratings on Thursday nights at 10pm ET/PT. It averages around 8.1 million viewers and a 2.5 rating in the coveted 18-49 demo. DVR use boosts it 45 percent. ABC hasn't announced anything about Nashville, Last Resort or 666 Park Avenue yet. More scripts for Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue have recently been ordered. We'll keep you posted.
Look for our review of the pilot episode of Reba McEntire's Malibu Country tomorrow. It premieres on Friday at 8:30pm ET/PT on ABC.

NBC Orders Additional Up All Night Episodes, Switches It to Multi-Camera Format; Yahoo Comedy Show Burning Love Gets Two More Seasons
NBC has ordered three additional episodes of Up All Night, which will bring their season two total to 16 episodes. The series will go on a winter break after episode 11 airs in December. When the show comes back in the spring 2013, it will return as a multi-camera sitcom for the final five episodes of the season. The sophomore comedy, which stars Christina Applegate, Will Arnett, Maya Rudolph, and Luka Jones, has struggled in the ratings on Thursday nights. It has averaged around only three million viewers.
NBC tried a switch like this before in 2003 with Watching Ellie. The series, which starred Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lauren Bowles (Julia's real life half-sister) and Steve Carell, originally aired as a single-camera comedy from February-April 2002. When they returned almost a year later in April 2003, they switched to a multi-camera format. Unfortuntely, the format change didn't work for them as they had even lower ratings. A couple of other sitcoms made the switch from single-camera to multi-camera with much better success. The Odd Couple's first season was shot single-camera with a laugh track added. The other four seasons were shot with three cameras and in front of a studio audience. Happy Days is the best-known series to switch formats. Their first two seasons were shot single-camera with the laugh track added. When they made the switch to the multi-camera format in season three, they became a huge hit.
What do you think of NBC's decision? Discuss it on our Up All Night message board. They have a couple of other multi-camera sitcoms in Guys with Kids and Whitney. They had much success with multi-camera sitcoms like Friends and Seinfeld in their glory days, so this seems like a good move.
Paramount's Insurge Pictures and Yahoo! announced yesterday that Burning Love, the popular comedy series that spoofs reality dating shows, will return for two more hilarious seasons on Yahoo! Screen in 2013. The break-out video program premiered June 4 domestically on the Yahoo! Comedy Channel to critical acclaim.
Burning Love is a web spoof of the series The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. The series follows fireman Mark Orlando (Ken Marino) in his search for the perfect woman to marry or at least be engaged. Many familiar actors from film and television have appeared in the scripted comedy series. Michael Ian Black appears as the host, Bill Tundle. Other characters are played by Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Adam Scott, Mo Gaffney, Mather Zickel, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Ryan Hansen and Paul Scheer. The contestants on the show include Kristen Bell, June Diane Raphael, Ken Jeong, Malin Akerman, Natasha Leggero, Abigail Spencer, Noureen DeWulf, Jennifer Aniston, Beth Dover and Janet Varney.
The series is written by Erica Oyama (Children's Hospital) and directed by Ken Marino. Seasons two and three will feature returning cast members Ken Marino, June Diane Raphael and Natasha Leggero as well as new characters in their quest to find true love. Season Two, which is coming in January 2013, will follow Julie (June Diane Raphael), who failed to capture Mark Orlando's heart in Season One of Burning Love, as she searches for love in a group of guys who are hopefully all there for the right reasons. In Season Three, Burning Down the House reunites our favorite rejected guys and girls as they return to the Burning Love mansion to compete for a hefty prize and for each other's affection.

Holiday episodes of sitcoms like Boy Meets World, 8 Simple Rules, & Reba will air in their time periods and Full House will get a special airing on Monday, Dec. 24 at 9am, as that series has been on hiatus for awhile. Also, just for the holidays, a holiday mini-marathon of the '90s series Beverly Hills 90210 will air Thursday, Dec. 20 from 7am-11am leading into movies starring cast members from the series like Christmas Caper starring Shannen Doherty.

A Cheers reunion maybe? Rhea Perlman will reunite with longtime friend and former Cheers co-star Kirstie Alley in the sitcom pilot Giant Baby. Perlman will play Thelma, Maddie's (Alley) long-suffering assistant and best friend, who encourages her boss to form a relationship with the son she gave up for adoption, Arlo (previously known as Owen). The network originally announced the Alley-headlined project as a presentation last month. Giant Baby revolves around Madison "Maddie" Banks, a Broadway star who finds her life turned upside down when Arlo, her long-lost son, turns up looking to connect after his adopted mother has died. However, Maddie doesn't exactly see nerdy and schlubby Arlo fitting in with her luxurious lifestyle. When her attempt to change Arlo backfires, Maddie finds that perhaps they both could use a little change in their lives.
Giant Baby is written and executive produced by Marco Pennette and is also executive produced by Kirstie Alley and Jason Weinberg. Larry W. Jones and Keith Cox serve as executive producers for TV Land. Both Alley and Perlman were in the ABC pilot The Manzanis last season but it never made it past pilot. Stay with us to see if this pilot goes past the pilot stage and gets a series order. There is a good chance it will and it will join Hot in Cleveland, Happily Divorced and The Exes. But stay tuned...

Week 5 TV Ratings and Analysis; How the Sitcoms Did
Total Viewers: #1. CBS 12.04 million; #2. Fox 9.59 million; #3. ABC 8.17 million; #4. NBC 6.23 million; #5. The CW 1.8 million.
Adults 18-49: #1. Fox 2.9/8.0 (rating/share); #2. CBS 2.7/7.4; #3. ABC 2.2/6.1; #4. NBC 2.2/6.0; #5. The CW 0.7/1.8
Monday started off week five and it was affected by the fourth debate. Starting with ABC, a one-hour Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars did 13.27 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, up three tenths in 18-49 from previous week when it was two-hours. Tomorrow it will be back to two hours. ABC News' coverage of the final presidential debate followed at 9pm ET and did not count in the ratings. Castle was preempted and ABC aired the debate analysis from 10:35-11pm ET and did 8.05 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, down from usual in the time slot. For NBC, a one-hour The Voice, which is in week seven actually, did 12.02 million and a night best 4.3 18-49 rating, but down five tenths in 18-49 from previous week when it was two-hours. NBC News' coverage of the final presidential debate followed at 9pm ET and did not count in the ratings. Revolution was preempted and NBC aired the debate analysis from 10:35pm-11pm ET and did 9.33 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, right about what it does with normal programming in the time period. Next up was CBS. At 8, How I Met Your Mother was preempted for a rerun of Big Bang Theory and it did 7.72 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, solid for a repeat, but seems a little older skewing. Then Partners was preempted for a rerun of 2 Broke Girls that did 6.76 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, right on par with a NEW Partners, wow...not good for that new series. Then the regular 2 Broke Girls and Mike & Molly were preempted. CBS News' coverage of the final presidential debate followed at 9pm ET and did not count in the ratings. Hawaii Five-0 was preempted and CBS aired the debate analysis from 10:35-11pm ET and it did 6.17 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, down from what CBS normally does with normal programming. Fox was next but Bones and The Mob Doctor were preempted for MLB NLCS Game #7 doing 8.13 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating in primetime, but up eight tenths from game 2 the previous week. Still pretty low for a Game 7. The CW aired their Monday slumping dramas, with 90120 starting it off with just 910,000 viewers and a 0.4 18-49 rating, back down two tenths from its previous week. This has got to be the last season. And Gossip Girl followed with just 950,000 viewers and a 0.4 18-49 rating, on par with its previous again, as this show is going out with a whimper.
On Tuesday, it NBC prevailing in 18-49, just getting by CBS. Starting with CBS, NCIS was new and posted 17.78 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, which is below normal. At 9, a new NCIS: Los Angeles did 16.53 million and 2.8 18-49 rating, almost coming close to its parent show...wow. At 10pm a new Vegas did only 10.8 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating for a series low and down four tenths from its last new episode two weeks prior. But it's been picked up for a full season. ABC had part two of Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars at 8pm and did 12.9 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, up three tenths in 18-49 from previous week when it was a Results show. No Results on this week due to the debate. Then at 9pm, it was the season premiere of the very funny Happy Endings and that did 5.57 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, skewing older than normal thanks to its lead-in. This show usually skews very young. At 9:30pm, it was the season premiere of Don't Trust the B---- In Apartment 23 and that did skew very young with 4.2 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, tying the competing NBC comedy. At 10pm, it was a new Private Practice and it did 4.58 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, which is a series low. This is the final season. NBC started off solidly with week 7 of The Voice in the 8pm hour doing 11.22 million and a 4.3 18-49 rating, but down three tenths in18-49 from previous week. New comedy Go On followed with 6.12 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, but it still lost to the competing Fox comedy. At 9:30pm, fellow new comedy The New Normal didn't do that well with 4.33 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, tying the ABC comedy despite a higher lead-in. At 10pm a new Parenthood did 4.85 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, actually good enough for it to win the hour, ouch. Fox started it off with a new Raising Hope at 8pm doing 4.1 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which was on par in 18-49 from the previous week. Then week five of Ben & Kate followed doing only 2.99 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, but up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Still a horrible decision to quickly pick up six more episodes. At 9pm, New Girl was all-new and did 5.16 million and 2.7 18-49 rating, third in viewers among the 9p comedies but first in 18-49. The new comedy The Mindy Project was preempted for Fox's special X Factor episode that aired from 9:30-10:30pm and did only 5.71 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating. Should have just went with Mindy. The CW aired a new Hart of Dixie at 8pm and did 1.32 million and a 0.5 18-49 rating, which was down a tenth in 18-49 from the previous week. New series Emily Owens MD had its second episode at 9pm and did 1.11 million and a disappointing 0.3 18-49 rating, down two tenths from its series premiere. Not good.
Wednesday it was Fox with the win with game 1 of the World Series, but it was not big. First, CBS started the night off with week six of Survivor: Philippines at 10.23 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating, again on par in 18-49 from previous week. Veteran drama Criminal Minds followed at 9 with 11.61 million and a 3.1 18-49 rating, also again on par in 18-49 week-to-week. A new CSI at 10 did 9.95 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. ABC started off with its Comedy Wednesday comedy block with a new Halloween episode of The Middle doing 8.8 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week again. Great episode again! At 8:30pm, The Neighbors was new at 8:30pm with its Halloween episode and did 6.96 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. It is doing decent, I think. At 9pm, Modern Family was all-new for Halloween as well and did 12.52 million and a very good 4.9 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 week-to-week. At 9:30, a new Halloween episode of Suburgatory posted 7.37 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, down a tenth from its season premiere. The third episode of Nashville was next at 10pm, and it was outstanding, posting 6.54 million and 2.0 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 from previous week. Not too bad, just a little higher and it will win the time period. Fox had to preempt The X Factor for Game 1 of the World Series that did 12.65 million and a 3.7 18-49 rating in primetime and 12.24 million and a 3.6 18-49 rating overall, that is below average. NBC opened the night with a new Animal Practice, which is awful by the way, dropping to 3.68 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, but up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's series low. It will be pulled after this week's episode. At 8:30pm, the news wasn't good either but a tad better with new comedy Guys with Kids doing only 3.84 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 from previous week one again. Law & Order: SVU was next at 9pm and did just 6.77 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, but up three tenths in 18-49 week-to-week. Week three of Chicago Fire followed at 10 and did 6.42 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, up three tenths from the previous week, so it stopped the bleeding a bit. The CW had week three of Arrow and it did well with 3.51 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 from the previous week. Week four of Supernatural at 9pm followed and did 1.86 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, but down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week for a season low. Wednesday are still looking solid for The CW!
Thursday it was Fox with a sneak by win because of the World Series. But first, ABC opened the night with week five of Last Resort doing 6.53 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, down four tenths in 18-49 from previous week, as it seems it was affected by World Series?. Grey's Anatomy was new at 9pm and did 8.76 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, which is down four tenths from previous week...very strange. At 10pm, Scandal was all-new as well and did 6.11 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Another very good episode! CBS opened with a new The Big Bang Theory at 15.82 million and a 5.0 A18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Bested Modern Family by a tenth again this week for #1 comedy in 18-49. A new episode of Two and a Half Men followed with 12.94 million and a 3.7 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week's season high. Then Person of Interest was new at 9pm and did 14.03 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, which was up a tenth in 18-49 week-to-week but still second to the ABC drama. At 10pm, a new Elementary posted 10.31 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, down a tenth week-to-week and could be better. Fox had to preempt The X Factor and Glee for MLB World Series Game #2 and posted 12.05 million and a 3.4 18-49 rating in primetime and 12.34 million and a 3.5 18-49 rating overall. NBC was still in the familiar fourth place with a new 30 Rock doing 3.13 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating only, on par in 18-49 from previous week's series low. A new Up All Night followed and did only 3.21 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 week-to-week. Still not good at all. Then The Office was new at 9pm and did just 4.0 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week and another series low. At 9:30pm Parks & Recreation did just 3.34 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, but up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. At 10pm, Rock Center with Brian Williams posted 3.72 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous as we still continue to wonder why is this still on the air. The CW's big gun Vampire Diaries had a new airing and did 2.87 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 from the previous week. New series Beauty & the Beast was next at 9pm and did 1.88 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating, which is down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week...disappointing.
Now, final numbers for Friday and Saturday are not available, but ABC took the top spot again on Friday. ABC won the 8pm hour with week seven of Shark Tank but down a tad from its series high the previous week, while CBS was very low with its dramas like CSI: NY at 9pm. NBC jumped to first at 9pm with Grimm, as ABC's WWYD was preempted, while CBS' Blue Bloods took 10pm. Fox was very low with Kitchen Nightmars & Fringe and NBC did OK with the busted pilot Mockingbird Lane at 8.
Saturday numbers had ABC win the night with College Football, as Fox's World Series was a close second. CBS and NBC's encores did nothing.
Tonight are new episodes for ABC Sunday (AFV, Once Upon a Time, Revenge and 666 Park Avenue). Look for a solid night and Once will be again the top series on the night excluding NFL. ABC should be third tonight again. NBC will do well with the NFL with Saints and Broncos, which will win them the night and maybe the week again (unless Fox does big with the overrun tonight). CBS has a new Amazing Race following 60 Minutes, and The Good Wife at 9pm leading into The Mentalist at 10pm. Looks like a fourth place finish. Fox preempts its animation block for MLB World Series Game #4, should be good for #2 for the night, though.
As for the week (week 5), CBS will win in HH, viewers but 18-49 is going to be a battle with NFL on Fox and NBC. Can Fox make the push for a win to dethrone NBC? Or will NBC make it five weeks in a row thanks to the NFL? For sure they will be first or second in 18-49, though. Fox will finish second likely in HH/viewers, followed by ABC and NBC. In 18-49, Fox and NBC will battle for first, then ABC should be third in 18-49, while CBS could be close by too. As for the coming week (week 6), look for more November sweep action, but the east cost could be affected by the hurricane Monday and Tuesday...so watch out for low ratings. End of the week has the season premiere of Last Man Standing on Friday at 8 followed by the series premiere of Malibu Country at 8:30pm on ABC, as Friday's #1 show Shark Tank moves to 9 to grow even more.
- The Simpsons (Fox) - preempted for MLB NLCS.
- The Cleveland Show (Fox) - preempted for MLB NLCS.
- Bob's Burgers (Fox) - preempted for MLB NLCS.
- Family Guy (Fox) - preempted for MLB NLCS.
- American Dad! (Fox) - preempted for MLB NLCS.
- How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - preempted.
- Partners (CBS) - preempted.
- The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A special Monday repeat at 8 did 7.72 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating. Amazing how it can just come in and repeat well anywhere.
- 2 Broke Girls (CBS) - A repeat at 8:30pm because of the final debate did 6.76 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, which is on par with a new Partners, ouch.
- Mike & Molly (CBS) - preempted.
- Raising Hope (Fox) - A new episode at 8pm did only 4.1 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, on par with previous week. This is as good as this show will get, around a 1.7 or 1.8 rating among adults 18-49.
- Ben & Kate (Fox) - Week five of this new comedy did just 2.99 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, but up two tenths in 18-49 from the previous week's series low...yet Fox still picked-up six more episodes. Very strange!
- New Girl (Fox) - A new episode at 9 against two other comedies did 5.16 million (for third against the other comedies) but a solid 2.7 18-49 rating (beating the other two comedies).
- Go On (NBC) - A new episode did 6.12 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, still losing to the competing Fox comedy despite the large lead-in from The Voice.
- Happy Endings (ABC) - The season premiere posted 5.57 million, for second against the comedies but third with a 1.8 18-49 rating. Don't think the Dancing lead-in are the same viewers for this show, so it's not a good match.
- The Mindy Project (Fox) - preempted.
- The New Normal (NBC) - The battle of comedies continued, with a new episode of this posting just 4.33 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, tying the competing ABC comedy despite a better lead-in.
- Don't Trust the B---- In Apartment 23 (ABC) - Season premiere posted only 4.2 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, but skewed very young, as the Dancing viewers were long gone.
- The Middle (ABC) - Week five did 8.8 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week again. Solid Halloween showing, and up once again.
- Animal Practice (NBC) - Week five in the timeslot did only 3.68 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, but up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. It has one more airing left this week, as Nov. 7 it is not airing and Whitney takes over Nov. 14. That show is not much better.
- The Neighbors (ABC) - Week five of this new series at 8:30pm did 6.96 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 week-to-week. It continues to consistent in this slot. Could be better, but everyone expected much worse. And it's turning out to be a decent show.
- Guys with Kids (NBC) - Week five of this comedy in the timeslot did only 3.84 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating again, on par in 18-49 from previous week once again. Will Whitney help in a few weeks?
- Modern Family (ABC) - A new episode at 9pm did 12.52 million and a 4.9 18-49 rating, which was up two tenths from the previous week. It has been an outstanding season so far in quality. No doubt it will continue to win Emmy's. Very deserving.
- Suburgatory (ABC) - The Halloween episode at 9:30 did 7.37 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 week-to-week. Its lead-in is heavily DVRed for same day, so the retention is better than it seems, but it is hard for any show to follow Modern Family because of that.
- The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - Week five did 15.82 million and a 5.0 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from the previous week, like Modern. #1 sitcom of the week for the second straight week, just getting by Modern Family by a tenth.
- Two and a Half Men (CBS) - Week five of this comedy did 12.94 million and a 3.7 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from the previous week's season high. Solid!
- 30 Rock (NBC) - A new episode aired at 8pm and did just 3.13 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 from previous week's series low. Terrible and NBC is probably glad this is the last season.
- Up All Night (NBC) - A new episode did only 3.21 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, actually up a tenth in 18-49 from the previous week. Could by this show more time and Community will likely not come in until January. But still terrible!
- The Office (NBC) - A new airing did only 4.0 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, down two tenths from previous week and another series low in 18-49. Season 9 was a mistake.
- Parks & Recreation (NBC) - A new episode at 9:30 followed with 3.34 million and just a 1.7 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week...and yes The Neighbors still does better! In fact that show did higher than any of these NBC comedies. Must Not See Thursday.
- Last Man Standing (ABC) - Season premiere this Friday at 8!
- Malibu Country (ABC) - Series premiere this Friday ta 8:30!
- None
Summing it up. Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, New Girl, The Middle, Surburgatory were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as The Neighbors, Happy Endings) or just plain old terrible (such as Animal Practice, Ben & Kate, The Office, 30 Rock).

Digital Digest: Alice Season 2 Now on DVD; Simon & Simon - Season Seven DVD Review; The Flintstones - Prime-Time Specials Collection, Volume 1 DVD Review
As many of you already know by now, Warner Archive made a surprise announcement (and release) this week of Alice - The Complete Second Season! The Linda Lavin sitcom is back on DVD with 24 more grit kissing episodes of the hijinks at Mel's Diner. We just received our review copy of this set today, and we'll have our review up within the next few days. But we know that there is one question "burning" on everybody's mind, and that is whether the initial batch is a "burned" DVD-R release or pressed DVDs. Well, we've got your answer: our review copy, as it turns out, is a pressed DVD set once again! We'll have much more on this set in our review once it is posted.
The classic Meredith Baxter and David Birney series Bridget Loves Bernie was slated to be released on DVD a few years ago, but that release never materialist. It seems, though, that Sony finally will be releasing the series on DVD on December 4... but as a MOD title. As a side note, Sony will also be releasing the classic made-for-TV movie The Boy in the Plastic Bubble on the same date. While it isn't clear whether this will be a MOD title (it most likely will be), this will be a departure from the numerous public domain offerings of the movie that have been made available over the years.
DVD Review: Simon & Simon - Season Seven (Shout!, $29.99)
by skees53
The Simon brothers are back to investigate more crimes in Simon & Simon - Season Seven! The classic series follows private investigators Rick (Gerald McRaney) and A.J. (Jameson Parker) Simon as they crack some of the most difficult cases out there. But things are a little different this time. The first change is the "new cop in town," Lieutenant Abigail Marsh (Joan McMurtrey), who takes over at the police department after Downtown Brown (Tim Reid) is transferred. Unlike the previous seasons, which were more lighthearted, the seventh season takes cues from some of the other late '80s crime dramas and has a more serious and personal tone for the Simons, as the brothers take on cases such as investigating the truth about the death of their own father and even the rape and assault of their own mother.
The season begins with "New Cop in Town," where the Simons first meet Lieutenant Marsh... and their first confrontation isn't quite as warm as the treatment they received from Downtown Brown. One of Rick's former girlfriends (played by Gerald McRaney's future wife Delta Burke) hires the Simons in "Desperately Seeking Dacody." A wannabe detective finds herself in trouble in "You, Too, Can Be a Detective." In "Shadows," Rick and A.J. try to help a young girl after she robs A.J. A killer from A.J.'s past wants revenge in "Second Swell." A sleazy divorce case turns into a serious murder case in "Forever Hold Your Piece." The leader of a Vietnamese mob requests... well, actually demands... Rick's assistance in "Tale of the Tiger." Rick and A.J. protect a relief worker from a death squad in Nuevo Salvador.
The Simons are out to catch a thief (played by David L. Lander) before a bounty hunter does it in "Bad Betty." In "Baja, Humbug," Rick and A.J. could be going into the charter boat business. A woman's paranoia is more rooted in truth than anybody suspects in "A Firm Grasp of Reality." In "Ties That Bind," Officer Nixon has the Simons investigate one of their own officers. Marsh deals with the stress of killing a young boy in "Little Boy Dead." In "Sudden Storm," the brothers are outraged when their mother is beaten and raped, but it only gets worse when they get closer to the truth. The season ends with "May the Road Rise Up," where a further investigation of the death of Rick and A.J.'s father reveals some shocking facts.
Disc 1:
1. "New Cop in Town" (47:51)
2. "Desperately Seeking Dacody" (47:53)
3. "You, Too, Can Be a Detective" (47:51)
4. "Shadows" (47:53)
Disc 2:
5. "Second Swell" (47:22)
6. "Forever Hold Your Piece" (47:52)
7. "Tale of the Tiger" (47:46)
8. "Nuevo Salvador" (47:50)
Disc 3:
9. "Bad Betty" (47:05)
10. "Baja, Humbug" (46:53)
11. "A Firm Grasp of Reality" (47:51)
12. "Ties That Bind" (46:34)
Disc 4:
13. "Little Boy Dead" (47:52)
14. "Sudden Storm" (47:52)
15. "Something Special" (47:53)
16. "May the Road Rise Up" (47:52)
Like the previous Shout! Select releases of this series, we once again have a standard Viva case with the same photo of the duo that many of the past seasons have featured. The color scheme used this time is a somewhat burnt orange color. There are a few episode snapshots and a discussion of a few episodes on the back of the case. Inside, you'll find the four discs (two less than the previous releases), which have the series logo on a burnt orange background. Episode titles and airdates are listed inside the case.
I can't really say that I'm all too impressed with the video and audio quality, but it is sufficient. You'll notice quite a few defects on the episodes, particularly at the beginning of the episodes, in regards to grain and debris. The audio levels on the set are generally fine, without many problems. Like most Shout! Select releases, the episodes are NOT closed-captioned.
I first discovered this series on DVD, and for the most part, that is the only place I've watched it (aside from a few times when RTV aired it a few years ago). I really do have to say, though, that I feel that the series really was starting to "die" by this season, and of course it was only a year later that the series was canceled for good. The stories just aren't as good, and while Lieutenant Marsh is a likable character, she certainly is no Downtown Brown. It is really obvious that the writers were trying to go down uncharted territory in this season as well... the episode about Cecilia Simon being raped was one of the most shocking episodes of the series. How often do we see regular characters with seemingly no flaws and with no reason for anybody to dislike them have this happen on a TV series? It was almost as if the writers were wanting to create some incredibly gritty crime drama along the lines of the (at the time) new series like Miami Vice and Hunter. I do have to say that I did enjoy the writing and acting on some of the more dramatic episodes in this season, but it simply doesn't feel right for the characters. As for the DVD set itself, Shout! did a fine job, and despite the weakening of the series by this point, I do hope that we get to the final 13 episodes of the series very soon just for the sake of completion.

DVD Review: The Flintstones - Prime-Time Specials Collection, Volume 1 (Warner Archive, $14.95)
by Pavan
Two Flintstones primetime specials is now on DVD from Warner Archive Collection! Following a spate of Saturday morning spin-offs, America's favorite Stone Age family returned to network primetime with a full slate of hysterical pre-historical specials – no quitting time for Fred! In The Flintstones Meet Rockula and Frankenstone (1979), the Flintstones and the Rubbles travel to fear-fraught Rockysylvania thanks to a big game show win. Fred and Barney soon stumble upon – and awaken – the legendary Frankenstone Monster, who promptly revives his vampiric master, Rockula. When Rockula falls head over batwings for Wilma, will Fred end up having an undead-old time? Flintstones Little Big League (1978) sees Fred and Barney facing off as opposing Little League coaches while Bamm-Bamm and Pebbles duel across the diamond. Swept up by competitiveness and paternal pride, their friendship ends up in the dug-out doghouse. Meanwhile, a cop, a judge and Mr. Slate are all putting pressure on Fred to win at all costs – what’s a cavedad to do?
The primetime specials started in 1977 with A Flintstone Christmas. Last year, Warner Archive Collection gave us that special and also the 1993 A Flintstone Family Christmas special. Now, we are getting the rest of the primetime specials in different volumes! This is Volume 1 and has the next two primetime specials from 1978 and 1979. The Flintstones Meet Rockula and Frankenstone (1979) runs 48:39 and has 7 chapter stops. Flintstones Little Big League (1978) runs 48:20 and has 7 chapter stops. Both are unedited!
The packaging for this set is pretty standard. On the cover, we have an image from the 1979 special The Flintstones Meet Rockula and Frankenstone with Fred and Barney looking scared to see them. On the bottom there is a mention of the two titles on this Classic Collection set. On the back, there is a nice photo of Fred, Barney, Wilma, & Betty trying to escape from Rockula and Frankenstone, along with a description of the two specials. We also have two episodic images from Flintstones Little Big League (1978) special. Inside the case, it is pretty bland. There is no artwork on the panels. There is one disc and it is on the right panel. The disc artwork is the same artwork as the cover art with the franchise logo imprinted on it. All similar to the Christmas collection that was released last year.
The main menu isn't very exciting, but it is perfectly functional. The main menu has the same artwork as the cover art, with no music playing in the background. The theme song would have been nice? The special titles are listed right on the main menu and you select from there. There are no options for anything else, so it is simple. As mentioned, we have seven chapter stops on both specials and they have the correct placements. All this is similar to the Christmas collection, too.
The video and audio quality of this set looks fine, for the most part. Both specials were from the same era, so they both look the same. There are white dots here and there, but it is still good. Not bad for 1978 and 1979. There are no real major problems both specials, so don't worry about it. As for the audio quality, it is clear and crisp. Unfortunately there are no subtitles or closed-captioning. The specials originally aired on NBC, as did all the primetime specials from 1977-1981. Nothing much else to say, it is simple and it works.
There are no special features obviously on this set since it is just two specials, like their Christmas collection set was. Perhaps maybe some promos or other archival items for these two would have been nice to have, but I didn't expect it.
Halloween is near and we are in World Series time, so these two specials are coming out at a perfect time It is good we are finally getting the primetime specials on DVD. The remaining NBC primetime specials are on a Volume 2 release, which we hope to review soon. In that we have: The Flintstones' New Neighbors (1980), Fred's Final Fling (1980), Wind-Up Wilma (1981), and Jogging Fever (1981). That covers all the 1977-1981 specials on NBC! Nice! Warner Archive is also releasing the 1993 ABC TV-movies The Flintstones - I Yabba Dabba Do! and The Flintstones - Hollyrock-A-Bye Baby. Now all the specials are nearly released! Only The Flintstones' 25th Anniversary Celebration, The Flintstone Kids' "Just Say No" Special, and Hanna-Barbera's 50th: A Yabba Dabba Doo Celebration remain. Back to this set, other than my minor nitpicks, this set works. It is simple and is just two specials, so not much was expected. For die-hard fans, you would be pleased, I think. And for casual fans or first-time watchers, you'll like what you see on these two specials. So please click the link below and buy it from the Warner Archive Collection! Get scared and play ball! Yabba dabba doo!

Claim to Fame: Played Silas Botwin, son of drug dealing soccer mom Nancy Botwin on the Showtime series Weeds.
Why You Should Follow Him: You'll notice that we've had two child stars on here over the past two weeks, with one who has retired from acting and another who was really just getting her start as an actress when she was a child. But both of those stopped being "child actors" over a decade ago. Parrish is a child star who grew up into a full-fledged adult in the years that he was on Weeds, literally starting out the series playing a kid in high school all the way into playing a husband and father in his 30s (if the time fast forwards on the series are to be believed) by the end of the series. He seems to be a very down to earth person, and while it isn't completely clear where he goes from here, he has been making efforts to be a musician and done some stage acting in recent years. He has released a few songs (he even sang the theme song for one of the final episodes of Weeds), and has recently done shows with Ryan Cabrera. I have listened to some of his music, and he certainly does seem to have the talent to succeed... we certainly wish him the best in whatever he does next!
Pick of the Tweets: "Whoever sang the weeds theme in our episode tonight sucks...who has seen it?" (September 2, 2012) (side note: that "whoever" was Parrish, and it didn't suck!)

Last week we mentioned that NBC is coming out with a digital subchannel on their ten owned stations that will have some classic TV...now we have the official announcement. NBC Owned Television Stations announced the introduction of COZI TV, a new 24x7 national network designed to deliver an easy-to-watch, comfortable and familiar viewing experience to audiences nationwide. COZI TV will combine many of America's most beloved and iconic television series, hit movies and original programming with a warm and welcoming vibe that engages viewers. It will launch early next year on the digital channels of the 10 NBC-owned stations, which serve the nation's biggest markets, and is available to local stations across the country.
COZI TV will be programmed around the clock, while offering local stations conveniently scheduled daily blocks of time that can be preempted for programming of interest to viewers, such as local news, sports and special events. This sought after format – designed by local broadcasters – will enable stations to air companion local programing to their primary channel. Drawing from the vast NBCUniversal library of movies and TV shows as well as from other top studios, including Sony Pictures, COZI TV will bring viewers access to some of America's favorite entertainment. Well-known shows like Magnum, P.I., The Bionic Woman, Charlie's Angels, Highway to Heaven, Lone Ranger and The Six Million Dollar Man will be featured on the network. COZI TV will also air a wide range of movies, showcasing iconic actors spanning generations, including legends Rock Hudson and Doris Day and modern day actors George Clooney and Drew Barrymore.
Additionally, COZI TV will be home to exclusive original programming that is currently under development by various partners. The network will also feature fresh, fun content that will air as interstitial programming to create an environment where people feel connected and comfortable. At the same time, it will incorporate innovative online and social media initiatives to engage the audience and enhance the viewing experience.
The official launch schedule is still not ready, so as soon as we can share that with you, we will. So stay with us!

ABC Celebrates Halloween With Sitcom Episodes; CBS Picks-Up Full Seasons of Vegas, Elementary
ABC starts the Halloween season tonight (Oct. 24) with a night of spooky laughs. There'll be a little something for everyone when ABC celebrates the scariest night of the year with Halloween-themed programming. Haunting highlights (Oct. 24-31) include deliciously spooky recipes featured on The Chew, frightening laughs when the Bird-Kersees feel threatened by trick-or-treating kids on The Neighbors tonight at 8:30/7:30c, an entertaining costume party hosted by Mitch and Cam on Modern Family, and a chilling night of drama on 666 Park Avenue on Sunday, as Olivia puts the finishing touches on the Drake's annual costume gala.
The fun begins TONIGHT with ABC Comedy Wednesday. We've seen three of the four episodes tonight and they are hilarious and great Halloween episodes! On an all-new The Middle at 8/7c, as Halloween approaches, the Hecks get quite the scare when Sue receives her learner's permit, and it's time for Frankie and Mike to teach her how to drive. But when a freaked-out Sue loses her nerve, she ends up running over Axl's foot, which could put an end to his high school football career and his hopes for a scholarship. Meanwhile, Axl looks forward to voting in his first election, and Brick undergoes an unexpected transformation when he eats too much Halloween candy. Then on the new comedy The Neighbors, since arriving on Earth, the aliens - led by the Bird-Kersees - have viewed Halloween as a threat and have set up a barrier at the gates of Hidden Hills to prevent children dressed in costumes from entering the community. The Weavers, on the other hand, are excited about their first Halloween in the suburbs and want to open the gates of the community to celebrate. They do their best to explain the ritual of trick-or-treating to the aliens. Meanwhile, Marty and Debbie's fears are realized when Amber, Max and Abby reject their family costume plans.
On TV's #1 comedy Modern Family at 9/8c, Claire has overdone it in Halloweens past and the neighbors definitely don't share her enthusiasm, so this year she's being forced to tone it down and keep it "kid-friendly," and Phil has an idea to hold an open house on Halloween night. Meanwhile, Mitch and Cam host a costume party while contending with Lily wondering who her real mom is, and Gloria's pregnancy hormones are on overdrive, making her even more hotheaded than usual. And then on Suburgatory, when Tessa convinces Dalia and the KKK (Kimantha, Kaitlyn and Kenzie) to come up with feminist inspired Halloween costumes, she finds herself the interest of the infamous East Chatswin witch (aka Paula), played by guest star Rachel Dratch. As it turns out Paula isn't exactly what she seems. Meanwhile George and Noah dress up as each other, and Dallas invites George to be "Ken" to her "Barbie" -- but he declines, not realizing that she is asking him out. And next week on the Tuesday comedies, on Happy Endings, Dave and Alex go apartment hunting, but their inability to commit to a place puts their real estate agent (guest star Rachael Harris) to the ultimate test. Meanwhile, Jane takes negotiations to crazy levels when she helps Penny shop for a car; professional freeloader Max shows a cash-strapped Brad how to spend the perfect Saturday in Chicago with no money at all; and the gang celebrates Halloween dressed as the legendary Jacksons. Rob Corddry guest stars as the Car Czar. And next Tuesday on Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, Halloween is June's favorite holiday, and even more so this year now that she is single! However when she discovers that Chloe plays elaborate Halloween "tricks" every year, June becomes consumed with stopping her before Chloe really hurts someone she might actually care about. Meanwhile due to a deep-rooted childhood fear of Halloween, James throws his annual Halloween "Positivity" Party.
And finally, the Halloween mania concludes on Halloween night with the best of them all, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. In the classic 1966 animated Halloween-themed special, created by late cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, the gang celebrates Halloween with Linus hoping that, finally, he will be visited by The Great Pumpkin, while Charlie Brown is invited to a Halloween party.
CBS has picked up full seasons for two rookie dramas: Tuesday drama Vegas and Thursday drama Elementary. Only the fate of new comedy Partners remains to be seen after the initial 13 episodes, as new drama Made In Jersey was already canned (it was the first new series canceled on any network). As for the other networks, NBC is likely going to give five more scripts to Guys with Kids, while ABC's new dramas 666 Park Avenue and Last Resort is looking to have two more scripts ordered as well. As for actual episode orders, The CW picked-up the back nine for new drama Arrow, so it will have a full season. Fox ordered two more Mindy Project episodes, so now it will be 24 episodes, as that is a vote of confidence since the series has only aired three times to not so great ratings.
Stay with us for any further updates on full season pick-ups and cancelations.

Seven Questions with Beverly Archer of Mama's Family and Major Dad, Plus a Video Message; The Munsters Halloween Marathon in New York City on WLNY
Fortunately, as we've already stated, it was only a hoax, and as soon as we reported it, Ms. Archer was quick to contact us to let us know that she was not only still alive, but still doing very well and enjoying life just as much today (if not more) than she was when we last saw her on TV over a decade ago. Although she is still rather young, she is now retired from the entertainment business by choice, and simply taking the time in her life to enjoy doing what she wants, which includes arts and crafts (don't worry, she is doing sculpting... not making those silly "cozies" like Iola made on Mama's Family) and travel around the world, including her most recent trip to the beautiful city of Florence in Italy.
In the midst of all of this, we asked Ms. Archer if she would be kind enough to allow us to do an interview with her, and she agreed to do it. We were glad to get this interview, because we know that fans want to hear from her, especially since she has stayed away from the limelight for over a decade... and, as she learned (though it didn't exactly surprise us) during the hoax a few weeks ago, she has a lot of fans out there. So she decided to give us a friendly "knock, knock" (well, actually it was a telephone ring) and take a few minutes to give us this interview.
"Seven Questions with Beverly Archer From Mama's Family and Major Dad"
SitcomsOnline: So we're going to, pardon the pun, "bury" this whole death thing in our first question. As you know, many sources such as IMDb and Wikipedia, and of course ourselves, were reporting this false story that you had died. How exactly did you find out that online sources were reporting your death, and what was your reaction when you first discovered this?
Beverly Archer: When I emailed them (IMDb) to ask them to change it, I got back a note from them that said something like "well, we'll look into it and let you know," and I thought "well, you didn't investigate it." I was out of the country, and I was in Italy, and the nine hour time difference kind of made things difficult. I came to the studio one morning, and I can't say which day it was, and I checked my email and my sister had sent me an email that said a friend of mine had called her to tell her what was happening. I realized later that I had also gotten an email from Matt Mulhern, but he didn't mention it. He just said in the email "are you there?" It was kind of cryptic. And my sister heard from a friend of mine. My first reaction was that it was some kind of mistaken identity, that in fact somebody did die in Santa Monica with a name similar to mine. It didn't occur to me that it was a hoax for quite a while. It took me a few days to realize that it was deliberate. But all the way up to now, it doesn't bother me that much, except I was upset at the possibility that someone would call my mother with condolences and they wouldn't know what was going on. That would be the only thing that kind of got me worried.
SitcomsOnline: One of your first roles on TV was on the almost completely forgotten The Nancy Walker Show in 1976. How did you manage to find this first role, and what were you doing in your career at that time to lead up to this role?
Beverly Archer: Well, I wasn't doing much. I considered myself an actor and I was doing commercials and whatever else and I ran into a fellow that I had done a little theater production with up in northern California, and it turned out that he was an agent. He signed me, and not too long after he got this call for someone to play the daughter on The Nancy Walker Show. Now they had a great deal of trouble casting it, and later I learned it was because they were stuck on the physicality. Nancy was a little thing, and they were having trouble casting it. So he got me this audition, and the only thing I remember about it really was that I went there and was given the script and sat there with six or seven other gals and I was reading this thing and I thought "oh, this is so funny!" I really thought it was a funny scene, and I was listening to the conversation in the room, and three of the other women were talking about how bad it was. They were talking about how bad the writing was, how it wasn't funny. I thought there was something wrong with me because I thought it was really funny. It turned out that I got it. I read right away with the producers and they got Nancy in to read with me. Then I think it dawned on them that the weird physicality would probably be an asset. So I was just lucky, in the right time and the right place.
SitcomsOnline: In 1986, you first appeared in what is probably your most memorable role as Iola Boylan on Mama's Family when it debuted in first run syndication, partially filling the void left by Betty White and Rue McClanahan who went on to The Golden Girls after NBC had originally canceled Mama's Family a year earlier. Did you have any clue at the time that essentially "replacing" two already well-known actresses in a series would lead to you creating a character who ended up being more enjoyed and remembered than those who had previously been among the main cast? What were some of your favorite moments from your years on Mama's Family?
Beverly Archer: Well, that was a very individual circumstance, because the network version, as you know, was canceled, and it was only because Joe Hamilton was the businessman he was, and he decided to recreate it in syndication. And at at that time, nobody even knew what syndication was. He was really a pioneer in making it syndicated. The cast that I came in with really had nothing to do with the NBC series. They were completely separate entities. It is not as if they thought "oh, Betty and Rue aren't working right, let's do something different." They canceled that show and Betty and Rue moved on to bigger and better things. They basically recreated Mama's Family for the version that I came in to. I don't think I can exactly iterate exact moments, but there wasn't a week that went by that Ken Berry didn't make me goof off. Ken Berry is like the funniest person on the planet. There was almost always something that ended up on camera, but he is just intrinsically a hilarious guy.
SitcomsOnline: So right after Mama's Family ended, you went almost directly into Major Dad. How did you manage to go from one series to the next so quickly?
Beverly Archer: That was because of Rick Hawkins. Rick Hawkins produced Mama's Family and he left Mama's Family with Jim Evering to produce Major Dad, and he produced the first year that I wasn't in. Then, they made major changes and got rid of a couple of characters and brought in new characters, and that was when he came on board to produce the second season that I was in. So he created the role of Gunny and the others. Gunny really wasn't quite out of the blue as it seems. I did a very short-lived series called Washingtoon, it aired on Showtime and it was one of the first cable sitcoms. It didn't last long, but it was this political thing where there was a senator who was kind of an idiot and I played his secretary. That is really where I created the role, and Rick had seen a clip of that and he liked the character, so he tried to recreate that.
SitcomsOnline: Later, in the '90s, you had a lot of memorable roles as tough as nails librarians and teachers in series like Married… with Children, Full House, and of course a very memorable role in The Brady Bunch Movie. These were great roles, but they were much different than the character you played on Mama's Family just a few short years earlier. Do you feel that you were somewhat typecast in the 90s?
Beverly Archer: Oh sure. Most character actors are, especially ones as tall as I am, and I was no exception.
SitcomsOnline: You tell us that you are retired, so how exactly are you spending the free time that is available to you these days?
Beverly Archer: I'm very involved in my study. I'm studying sculpting, and that is what I was doing in Italy. I do a lot of traveling. I did have my shop in upstate New York. That was the first thing I did after I retired. It was an antique store in the Catskills. And that was what I did for about eight years, and I was bi-coastal, spending May through October up there and the rest of the year here, but the bi-coastal thing began to be too much. I gave that up and did the same thing here. I had the antique store for a short time, but the more I got involved with clay, the more I wanted to spend time with it, so I gave up the shop. And now, my focus really is the clay.
SitcomsOnline: Finally, we know that you are retired by choice and intend to stay retired… and that is a perfectly fine choice. But if you hadn't retired, have you considered what type of work or what type of roles you'd like to see yourself in these days?
Beverly Archer: (laughs) Whatever kind of role they'd give me a paycheck for! That was the only kind of role I ever sought, was the one I got paid for. I certainly enjoyed doing comedy, but I would have enjoyed doing dramatic roles as well. But in our version of Hollywood, people who look like me don't do that. So, once you get into comedy, that is where you stay, which was fine with me. I loved doing comedy, and there is no greater gift than coming to work laughing everyday.
We definitely appreciate Ms. Archer for taking the time to give us an interview, especially considering that she was willing to do this interview for her fans, and not for publicity for herself. And of course, we would like to Ms. Archer and her fans once again apologize for spreading the hoax, but in the end, I think that we can all say that we are glad to know that she is not only still with us, but is in fact doing well and enjoying life to the fullest... and probably will be for decades to come. She very much appreciates the love and admiration that her fans have for her work over the years, and told us that she was pleased and surprised (although we don't know why, she was one of TV's funniest neighbors of all time in Mama's Family) to know how many of her fans out there truly care about her. And finally, as a side note, we certainly do respect her decision to stay retired and enjoy life as she sees fit... but if she should ever decide to change her mind, her fans would certainly support her.
Before we move on completely, we have this video message that Ms. Archer provided to us with a message to her fans:
Moving on to other news, WLNY TV-10/55 in New York City will have another classic TV marathon for a holiday. Back on 4tgh of July and I Love Lucy marathon was featured followed by an Andy Griffith Show marathon on Labor Day, and now another classic sitcom will be featured! The spooky 1964-66 sitcom The Munsters will have a marathon on WLNY-TV on Sunday, October 28, 2012 from 1pm-7pm. Unlike the other two, this won't be on the holiday itself, but it's still good enough! Every since CBS bought the station, it seems marathons are airing on each holiday. We can't wait to see what is up their sleeve for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve. If anything should surface, we'll let you know.
Not in New York, well you can watch The Munsters all this month on Boomerang, as we mentioned. And of course the new version of The Munsters is getting a test on NBC this coming Friday at 8pm.

Week 4 TV Ratings and Analysis; How the Sitcoms Did
Total Viewers: #1. CBS 10.43 million; #2. ABC 9.83 million; #3. NBC 7.47 million; #4. Fox 5.39 million; #5. The CW 1.94 million.
Adults 18-49: #1. CBS 2.7/7.3 (rating/share); #2. NBC 2.7/7.3; #3. ABC 2.3/6.4; #4. Fox 1.6/4.5; #5. The CW 0.8/2.1
Monday started off week four and it was the same as previous three weeks...NBC on top in 18-49 and ABC in total viewers. Starting with ABC, a two-hour Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars did 13.64 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Tomorrow will only be an hour due to another Presidential Debate at 9pm ET. A new episode of Castle followed with a first place 10.94 million but a third place 2.0 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 from the previous week. For NBC, a two-hour The Voice, which is in week six actually, did 13.01 million and a night best 4.8 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 from previous week. At 10pm, week five of Revolution did well for NBC with a third place 8.61 million but a first place 3.3 18-49 rating, up three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. First time it has gone up. It's been picked up for a full season. Next up was CBS with its comedies and Hawaii Five-0. At 8, How I Met Your Mother started it off with 7.93 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week. Week four of Partners followed with 6.08 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Not good for a CBS Monday comedy, but it did go up for the first time. Then it was 2 Broke Girls at 9pm doing 9.3 million and a 3.4 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 from previous week. Not as strong as the previous CBS Monday 9pm anchors, is it? A new Mike & Molly followed with 9.1 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 week-to-week. A new Hawaii Five-0 was next doing a second place 8.7 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Fox was next but Bones and The Mob Doctor were preempted for MLB NLCS Game #2 doing 5.58 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating. Pretty low and was lower in primetime hours with 5.54 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating. The CW aired their Monday slumping dramas, with 90120 starting it off with just 1.06 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating, but up two tenths from its season premiere. And Gossip Girl followed with just 780,000 viewers and a 0.4 18-49 rating, on par with its season premiere, which was horrible.
On Tuesday, it was an atypical night with the third debate causing primetime to be not normal, so NBC prevailed in 18-49, with ABC on top in total viewers. Starting with CBS, NCIS was preempted, but a repeat of NCIS: Los Angeles aired instead and did 8.1 million and 1,4 18-49 rating. From 9-10:39pm ET, CBS aired CBS News Campaign 2012: Presidential Debate, which doesn't count in the ratings. From 10:39-11pm, an analysis of the debate did count in the ratings and did 6.99 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, lower than what Vegas would do at 10. ABC had the live Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars: The Results at 8pm and did 12.92 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week but that was at 9pm. We said goodbye to Bristol Palin. From 9pm-10:39pm ET, ABC aired ABC News Your Voice Your Vote 2012: Presidential Debate, which doesn't count in the ratings. Look for the season premieres of the hilarious comedies Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B---- In Apartment 23 this Tuesday starting at 9pm. From 10:39pm-11pm ET, an analysis of the debate did count in the ratings and did 9.52 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, higher than the usual Private Practice at 10pm. NBC started off solidly with week 6 of The Voice in the 8pm hour doing 12.04 million and a 4.6 18-49 rating, up a tenth in18-49 from previous week. New comedy Go On and fellow new comedy The New Normal were preempted for NBC News Decision 2012: Presidential Debate, which did not count in the ratings. From 10:39pm-11pm, the analysis did count and posted 11.37 million and a 4.0 18-49 rating, MUCH higher than what Parenthood would be at 10pm. NBC benefited the most on this night, as its highest rated show aired at 8 and the other two lower rated hours didn't. Fox started it off with a new Raising Hope at 8pm doing 4.23 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which was down a tenth in 18-49 from the previous week. Then week four of Ben & Kate followed doing only 2.7 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Horrible decision to quickly pick up six more episodes. At 9pm, New Girl and the new comedy The Mindy Project were preempted for Fox's coverage of the Presidential Debate, which doesn't count in the ratings. The analysis from 10:40-11pm ET did, and posted 4.5 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating. The CW aired a new Hart of Dixie at 8pm and did 1.4 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating, which was up a tenth in 18-49 from the previous week. New series Emily Owens MD had its series premiere at 9pm and did 1.67 million and a disappointing 0.5 18-49 rating.
Wednesday it was CBS with the total viewers win, and sneaked a win in 18-49 just getting by ABC, as Fox was haunted by a big rain delay for NLCS Game #3. First, CBS started the night off with week five of Survivor: Philippines at 10.43 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 from previous week. Veteran drama Criminal Minds followed at 9 with 11.81 million and a 3.1 18-49 rating, which is below normal but up a tenth in 18-49 week-to-week. A new CSI at 10 did 10.63 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. ABC started off with its Comedy Wednesday comedy block with a new episode of The Middle doing 8.39 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week. Great episode, too. At 8:30pm, The Neighbors was new at 8:30pm and did 6.53 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Still doing OK and has not tanked. At 9pm, Modern Family was all-new and did 12.28 million and a very good 4.7 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 week-to-week. At 9:30, the season premiere of Suburgatory posted 7.54 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating. Solid, and I think it will do better in coming weeks. The second episode of Nashville was next at 10pm and posted 6.74 million and 2.0 18-49 rating, down eight tenths from its series premiere the previous week. It needs to do a bit higher to win the timeslot. Fox had a terrible and unlucky night. First, the MLB NLCS Game which was scheduled for the afternoon was in a rain delay, so Fox decided to start off with repeats of sitcoms in the east coast. A repeat of Ben & Kate at 8:02-8:32pm ET did just 3.46 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating. Rain delay coverage took over at 8:33pm ET for seven minutes before Fox decided to air the new The X Factor episode, which was scheduled to air from 8-10pm. They only aired an hour of it from 8:40-9:47pm ET for some reason and it did 6.34 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, down a big 1.2 18-49 rating points from previous week's two-hour episode. Then Fox aired 9 minutes of a repeat of The Mindy Project from 9:47-9:56pm ET and did 4.7 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating. Then the game was back from the rain delay and aired from 9:56pm-10:45pm ET. Strange night, as the west coast got a repeat of X Factor from 8-10pm PT instead. NBC opened the night with a new Animal Practice, which is awful by the way, dropping to 3.85 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, which was on par in 18-49 from previous week and tied a series low. It will be pulled by Nov. 14, so just 3 more left. At 8:30pm, the news wasn't good either but a tad better with new comedy Guys with Kids doing only 4.41 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, also on par in 18-49 from previous week. Law & Order: SVU was next at 9pm and did just 6.25 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 week-to-week. Time for this show to end. Week two of new dud Chicago Fire followed at 10 and did only 5.85 million and a just a 1.5 18-49 rating, down four tenths from its already horrible series premiere the previous week. The CW had week two of Arrow and it did well with 3.55 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with its series premiere the previous week. Good news! Week three of Supernatural at 9pm followed and did 2.13 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 from previous week. Wednesday is looking solid for The CW finally!
Thursday it was CBS with the win for the fourth straight week, as Fox suffered again with MLB NLCS. ABC opened the night with week four of Last Resort doing 7.06 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. So it did go up with the whole line-up back. Grey's Anatomy returned at 9pm and did 9.69 million and a 3.4 18-49 rating, which is a bit below normal. At 10pm, Scandal returned as well and did 6.17 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating. Very good episode, too! CBS opened with a new The Big Bang Theory at 15.73 million and a 4.8 A18-49 rating, up three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Bested Modern Family by a tenth this week for #1 comedy in 18-49. Week four of Two and a Half Men on a new night and time followed with 13.6 million and a 4.0 18-49 rating, up a surprising five tenths in 18-49 from previous week. A season high. Then Person of Interest returned at 9pm and did 13.93 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating, which was second to the ABC drama. At 10pm, a new Elementary posted 10.91 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, which could be better. Fox had to preempt The X Factor and Glee for NLC Game #4 and posted 6.04 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, which is much below what Fox Thursday usually does. NBC was still in the familiar fourth place with a new 30 Rock doing 3.04 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating only, again down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Ouch, a series low. A new Up All Night followed and did only 2.99 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, oddly up two tenths in 18-49 week-to-week. Still not good at all. Then The Office returned at 9pm and did just 4.28 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, tying a series low. At 9:30pm Parks & Recreation did just 3.46 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, close to terrible territory. At 10pm, Rock Center with Brian Williams posted 3.47 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, as we continue to wonder why is this still on the air. The CW's big gun Vampire Diaries had a new airing and did 2.91 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from its season premiere, the previous week. Hmm, Arrow could be the top show soon on this network? New series Beauty & the Beast was next at 9pm and did 2.0 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, which is down five tenths in 18-49 from previous week...concerning.
Now, final numbers for Friday and Saturday are not available, but ABC took the top spot again on Friday. ABC won the 8pm hour and the night with week fix of Shark Tank having a series high in both total viewers and 18-49, while CBS was very low with its dramas like CSI: NY at 9pm. NBC had to settle for second at 9pm with Grimm, as ABC's WWYD took the top spot at 9, while ABC also got by at 10pm beating CBS' Blue Bloods. Fox didn't have Fringe but it actually did better with MLB NLCS Game #5 than its normal Friday line-up.
Saturday numbers had ABC win the night with College Football, as Fox's college football game did nothing like CBS and NBC's encores.
Tonight are new episodes for ABC Sunday (AFV, Once Upon a Time, Revenge and 666 Park Avenue). Look for a solid night and Once will be up from previous week and the top series on the night excluding NFL. ABC should be third tonight. NBC will do well with the NFL with Steelers and Bengals, which will win them the night and maybe the week again (unless CBD does big with the overrun tonight). CBS has a new Amazing Race following 60 Minutes, and The Good Wife at 9pm leading into The Mentalist at 10pm. Looks like a second place finish with the NFL overrun. Fox preempts its animation block for MLB NLCS Game #6, should be good for #4 for the night, though.
As for the week (week 4), CBS will win in HH, viewers but 18-49 is going to be a battle with NFL on CBS and NBC. Can CBS make the push for a win to dethrone NBC? Or will NBC make it four weeks in a row thanks to the NFL? For sure they will be first or second in 18-49, though. ABC will finish second likely in HH/viewers, followed by NBC and Fox. In 18-49, CBS and NBC will battle for first, then ABC should be third in 18-49, while Fox is a distant fourth. As for the coming week (week 5), look for another debate tomorrow night, but it is the last one! No more weird nights until the Election night. Season premieres of Happy Endings and Apartment 23 are this Tuesday at 9/8c! Can you believe November sweeps will start on Thursday (Oct. 25)? Here we go again with a fast season...
- The Simpsons (Fox) - preempted for MLB NLCS.
- The Cleveland Show (Fox) - preempted for MLB NLCS.
- Bob's Burgers (Fox) - preempted for MLB NLCS.
- Family Guy (Fox) - preempted for MLB NLCS.
- American Dad! (Fox) - preempted for MLB NLCS.
- How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - Week four did 7.93 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, which is up a tenth in 18-49 from the previous week. It finally went up, but still way down from last season.
- Partners (CBS) - Week four of this freshman sitcom finally went up as well but did 6.08 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. It bought another week, I think.
- 2 Broke Girls (CBS) - 9.3 million and a 3.4 18-49 rating is solid and on par in 18-49 from its previous week. Again...was it too early for this series to be moved to an anchor spot? I really think it was.
- Mike & Molly (CBS) - The fourth episode of the season did 9.1 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from the previous week.
- Raising Hope (Fox) - A new episode at 8pm did only 4.23 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, so it was down a tenth from its previous week. Still just OK.
- Ben & Kate (Fox) - Week four of this new comedy did just 2.7 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from the previous week for another series low...yet Fox still picked-up six more episodes. Very strange!
- New Girl (Fox) - preempted for debate.
- Go On (NBC) - preempted for debate.
- Happy Endings (ABC) - Season premiere this Tuesday! It's hilarious...does not sook.
- The Mindy Project (Fox) - preempted for debate.
- The New Normal (NBC) - preempted for debate.
- Don't Trust the B---- In Apartment 23 (ABC) - Season premiere this Tuesday! Look for a Dawson's Creek reunion.
- The Middle (ABC) - Week four did 8.39 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week. Solid, and up once again.
- Animal Practice (NBC) - Week four in the timeslot did only 3.85 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 from previous week. It has three more airings left and then NBC will pull it for good. Whitney takes over Nov. 14. That's not much better.
- The Neighbors (ABC) - Week four of this new series at 8:30pm did 6.35 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 week-to-week. It has been consistent in this slot. Could be better, but everyone expected much worse.
- Guys with Kids (NBC) - Week four of this comedy in the timeslot did only 4.41 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, also on par in 18-49 from previous week.
- Modern Family (ABC) - A new episode at 9pm did 12.28 million and a 4.7 18-49 rating, which was down just a tenth from the previous week's first airing. It has been an outstanding season so far in quality. No doubt it will continue to win Emmy's. Very deserving.
- Suburgatory (ABC) - Season premiere at a new time of 9:30 did 7.54 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating! Was doing better at 8:30 last fall, but better than what it was doing in the spring. I think it will do better soon. Halloween episodes on Wednesday this week for all four ABC comedies could see a nice bump.
- The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - Week four did 15.73 million and a 4.8 18-49 rating, up three tenths in 18-49 from the previous week. #1 sitcom of the week, just getting by usual #1 Modern Family.
- Two and a Half Men (CBS) - Week four of this comedy did 13.6 million and a 4.0 18-49 rating, up a solid five tenths in 18-49 from the previous week for a season high. Maybe it has some legs left after all?
- 30 Rock (NBC) - A new episode aired at 8pm and did just 3.04 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week for a series low. Terrible and NBC is probably glad this is the last season.
- Up All Night (NBC) - A new episode did only 2.99 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, actually up two tenths in 18-49 from the previous week. But still terrible!
- The Office (NBC) - A new airing did only 4.26 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, tying a series low in 18-49.
- Parks & Recreation (NBC) - A new episode at 9:30 followed with 3.46 million and just a 1.6 18-49 rating. The Neighbors does better!
- None.
- None
Summing it up. Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, 2 Broke Girls, How I Met Your Mother, Mike & Molly, The Middle were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as The Neighbors, The Office) or just plain old terrible (such as Animal Practice, Ben & Kate, Up All Night, 30 Rock).
