Welcome to Digital Digest! We're all getting ready for the fall season, which goes into full gear in the upcoming weeks, but the "season" never ends or begins on DVDs and streaming video. This week, we've got reviews of Castle - The Complete Fourth Season and Private Practice - The Complete Fifth Season. Let's get going!
VEI has been very clear for the past year that Cagney & Lacey would not only be completed on DVD, but we'll even see the entire series, in one collection. The nagging question has been exactly when that will happen, but if this preorder listing for Cagney & Lacey - The Complete Series on amazon.ca is correct, it will be coming on November 13... just a little over two months from now! It is important to note that this set appears to be the general release, not the special edition which will contain the special features (including the much different first season, which often isn't even considered part of the true series). We hope to have a review of this set (if we do, it will most likely be the general release) when the time comes.
Last week, a Night Court fan on Facebook asked Warner Archive about whether or not they planned to release the next season of the series (which would be season seven) on DVD. The short answer to this question was yes, but the longer and more detailed answer is certain to please fans of the series. In their own words, "Yep, already working on it. Hoping to have the whole series out within the next year or so." So not only is the next season of Night Court in the works, but it sounds as if the long term plan is to get the remainder of the series out within a year! That isn't too bad for a series which once seemed to be stalled at the first season. We'll keep you updated when we have dates to fill in for these releases. I'm hoping for at least one by the end of this year, but we'll take them when we can get them!
The TV Land series Hot in Cleveland is moving ahead on DVD on November 27 with Hot in Cleveland - Season Three. The three-disc set comes at a $29.98 MSRP. And, by the way, it is worth noting that for fans north of the border, a Canadian version of this set will likely come out later by eOne, the studio handling Canadian releases for the series.
November 27 will also bring some legal drama to DVD, with the release of Perry Mason - Season 8, Volume 1. This release will push the series yet another step closer to completion, with only three more volumes to go after this. By the way, we're about 100% positive that the studio listed on the amazon.com listing is incorrect... it will not be released by Comedy Central DVD.
One week later, on December 4, Comedy Central... err, CBS... will be releasing Mannix - The Eighth and Final Season. As the title suggest, this will break the classic drama to a close on DVD. It isn't available to pre-order just yet.
Finally, Shout! Factory provided a little surprise this week as a pre-order of Quincy, M.E. - Season 4. The six-disc set will be released on December 18, just in time for Christmas.

The series will return to its Mondays at 10PM timeslot on ABC this coming season following Dancing with the Stars once again. The series stars Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle, Stana Katic as Detective Kate Beckett, Jon Huertas as Detective Javier Esposito, Seamus Dever as Detective Kevin Ryan, Tamala Jones as Medical Examiner Dr. Lanie Parish, Penny Johnson Jerald as Captain Victoria Gates, Molly Quinn as Alexis Castle, and Susan Sullivan as Martha Rodgers. Among the recurring stars are Arye Gross as Medical Examiner Dr. Sidney Perlmutter, Scott Paulin as Jim Becket, Juliana Dever as Jenny, Geoff Pierson as Mr. Smith and Victor Webster as Dr. Josh Davidson. Among the guests this year are Adam Baldwin, François Chau, Fredric Lehne, Richard Burgi, Deborah Van Valkenburgh, Jaime Ray Newman, Derek Webster, Rebecca Field, Mark Pellegrino, Jennifer Beals, Sarah Jane Morris, Bruce Gray, Christine Woods, Brett Tucker, Charles Shaughnessy, and Tahmoh Penikett.
This fourth season was great and the relationship between Castle and Beckett is up and down but is rewarding. As I keep saying, I don't like most crime shows of today, but this one is a throwback to the ones of the past and focuses on characters than more about the case. I like that! And the back and forth banter between Castle and Beckett is STILL sexy and is heating up! As far as memorable episodes, we have the season premiere "Rise," where after undergoing extensive surgery, Beckett takes three months to recuperate before returning to the NYPD, with Castle in tow she begins searching for her would-be assassin and the late Captain Montgomery is replaced by Captain Victoria "Iron" Gates, who does not approve of Castle's presence. In "Kick the Ballistics," Castle and Beckett investigate the murder of a young woman which was committed using Det. Ryan's old service weapon – the one that was stolen by the serial killer, 3XK. In "Cops & Robbers," Martha and Castle are held hostage by bank robbers dressed in hospital scrubs who are named after classic TV characters, while Beckett's rescue efforts are hindered by a strict hostage negotiator and Alexis faces problems in her relationship with Ashley. In "Kill Shot," the team searches for a sniper who is terrorizing New York, while Beckett tries to hide her worsening PTSD from Castle and the detectives.
In "Till Death Do Us Part," when Castle and Beckett investigate the death of a ladies' man, dark secrets are revealed about Ryan's bride. In the classic episode "The Blue Butterfly," Castle attempts to solve a crime using a diary written in the 1940s and every time he reads it he flashes back to the 1940s, with the principal characters being imagined as people described in the diary. In the first of 2-part episode, "Pandora," Castle and Beckett find out that the killer they are pursuing is part of an international conspiracy, while Alexis starts a new internship assisting Lanie in the Medical Examiner's Office. In the conclusion, "Linchpin," Castle and Beckett realize what the linchpin is and in their attempts to prevent a war from breaking out, they are betrayed by someone they thought they could trust, also over the course of the investigation, Castle begins to learn more about his father. In "A Dance with Death," Castle and Beckett take the case of a troubled celebrity who was murdered moments before she was due to appear as a contestant on a popular dancing competition. In "Headhunters," feeling that he is no longer able to work with Beckett, Castle finds a new partner in Detective Ethan Slaughter (Adam Baldwin), as the two attempt to prevent a gang war from taking over New York, Slaughter's questionable and often violent methods place Castle's life in danger. In the must-see season finale, "Always," when Castle and Beckett attend the murder of a reformed gang member, they find evidence that links him to Beckett's shooting and the theft of documents from Roy Montomgery's home and the episode concludes with the mystery man protecting Kate, identified as Mr. Smith, being threatened by Maddox to give up the information he is using to blackmail them.

Packaging has a thin outer box that you can remove from the top or bottom to get to the case inside, just like the previous sets. Both the thin outer box and case have the same artwork for both the front and back. The cover has a nice (and sexy) shot of Castle and Beckett as her hand is over his lips (the "shhh" sign). The show logo is present in white lettering towards the bottom. The tagline "Partners. In crime" appears above the logo. The back has a tan background with information on the set, four episodic screen shots from episodes and also a SEXY photo of Castle & Beckett with handcuffs (Beckett in a gold dress! wow!). There is also a box detailing the bonus features with technical specifications also.
Opening the case, on the left side we see some inserts which includes a booklet for other ABC DVDs and also a page on the upcoming Castle book Frozen Heat. We also have an insert on the upcoming graphic novel Storm Season and also $2.00 off of on Castle coffee blends! Morning is murder! Back to the case, on both the left and right panels we have a nice cast photo (Beckett in a nice tanish tank top!) with a disc-by-disc breakdown of episode titles. The discs are on plastic holders, like the previous set, that you can flip a page in a book. The first plastic holder holds disc one on the front side and disc two on the back side. The second plastic holds disc three on the front side and disc four on the back side. Disc five is on the right panel itself. Disc artwork is very nice and has that nice tan background, matching the set's color scheme. Disc one has episodes 1-5 with artwork of Richard Castle. Disc two has episodes 6-10 and has artwork of Kate Beckett (in black leather, Jesus!). Disc three has episodes 11-15 and has artwork of Ryan & Esposito. Disc four has episodes 16-20 and has artwork of Captain Gates & Lanie. And disc five has episodes 21-23 plus the bulk of the bonus features and has artwork of Martha & Alexis. This style is similar to the previous set.
The menu screen starts in the style of the opening title from the series with the theme music in the background, then we get to the main menu where we see moving video images with the closing theme playing in the background, similar to the previous sets. The options on the main menu are Play All, Episode Selection, Set Up, Bonus Features, and Sneak Peeks. But before the main menu screen comes on disc one, we get some auto sneak peeks: ABC TV on DVD summer, ABC TV on DVD fall, and Frankenweenie. Sneak Peeks option is only found on disc five on the main menu and has a preview of Roger Rabbit 25th anniversary DVD. This also auto plays before the main menu on disc five. Set Up section has the option of subtitles in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese and how you can register your DVD. The Episodes option gives us the episode number, title and a screenshot. Bonus Features option has all the extras listed and this is on every disc once again, rather than just disc five. All of the sub-menus have different background music from the show. Catchy!
The video is digitally mastered and is in widescreen and looks very good! The audio is great and sounds very good, as it is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Both the audio and video are similar to the previous sets. This is from 2011-2012, so it had better be good. There is nothing to complain at all here...it is perfect! Perfection here. There are about 7 chapter stops per episode. We get to hear the closing theme as well, whistles and all! All of the "previously on Castle" teasers that were used in a few episodes are intact. Not much to report here, but that is a good thing since this part of the DVDs are always perfect. I wish we had a Blu-ray version of this show and that would be beyond perfection! Imagine watching Stana Katic in Blu-ray (or Nathan Fillion for you females out there)!
Moving on the bonus features. We get audio commentaries again, for the second straight set. We also have audio commentary for the season premiere "Rise" from executive producer Rob Bowman, and stars Jon Huertas, Seamus Dever & Tamala Jones. This is very informative and fun as these are a fun group of people. On to disc two, we have an audio commentary on the fun episode "Handcuffed" from showrunner Andrew Marlowe, writer Terri Miller, and stars Nathan Fillion & Stana Katic! These guys are just as fun as the guys from the other audio commentary! For disc three, we have a deleted scene from the episode "Dial M for Mayor" (1:05). We also have audio commentary on the classic episode "The Blue Butterfly." This was the 1940s style episode and commenting are writer Terence Paul Winker, costume designer Luke Reichle, and stars Susan Sullivan, Tamala Jones & Molly C. Quinn. It's great to see them getting nearly every main series star on these commentaries! Disc four has two more deleted scenes: "Linchpin" (2:00) and "A Dance with Death" (0:42).
On to disc five, where the bulk of the extras are! We have deleted scenes for two episodes: "Headhunters" (0:17) and "Always" (1:02, 0:31, 0:25, 0:43). Nice to see four different deleted scenes from the season finale! Onto the main features, we have a cool radio series featurette titled "Nathan & Friends: Castle Goes Radio." We have Nathan and his friends performing the show Thrilling Adventure Hour before a live audience in a show broadcast in the style of an old-time radio drama. Very cool! First up for this we have "Making the Show" (11:42). Molly C. Quinn hosts and narrates this special on the radio show. We have interviews with Nathan Fillion, Ben Blacker, Ben Acker, Rick Sickler (Castle AD), Ruby Stillwater (Castle 2nd AD), Marc Evan Jackson and Jenny Wade. We also see Busy Philipps and David Anders on stage! There are two episodes in full for you to watch! "Sparks Nevada: Marshal on Mars" (21:15) and Cactoid Jim: King of the Martian Frontier (21:41). And if you click on the coffee cup, we get A Word From WorkJuice Coffee (4:30).
Next we have "Submerged: An In-Depth Look At Stunts" (17:32). We are taken to the heart-stopping car stunt from this season's two-part episode! Interviewed are Andrew Marlowe, Nathan Fillion, Rob Bowman, Dennis Madalone (stunt coordinator), Rich Sickler (first AD), Stana Katic, Bob Calvert (special effects coordinator), Barry K. Thomas (first AD), Bryan Spicer (director), Seamus Dever, Jon Huertas, Marc Khan (producer), Jon Howard (visual effects producer), and Robert Duncan (composer). Up next we have "Bowman, Bowman & Castle" (10:24). On this featurette, we are taken a behind the scenes look from the episode "The Blue Butterfly" where Rob Bowman called on his father Chuck Bowman to direct! Interviewed are Andrew Marlowe, Nathan Fillion, Rob Bowman, Mr. Chuck Bowman, Seamus Dever, Stana Katic, Jon Huertas, and Stephen Bowman (post production coordinator). Bowman's are wild like deuces! Finally, we have some "Bloopers" (4:22)...yes all the hilarious flubs and outtakes! See all the goofs and play on the set, as we get a bit more bloopers this time!
Another wonderful season and set! Season 4 is a pivotal season in the relationship between Castle and Beckett. I recommend this series and set once again...it is an ABC Studios DVD, so it is good and filled with special features. This series is really cooking, from start to finish. Season two was when it started to break out, and it continues and gets better in seasons three and four! This DVD is awesome as we get of course all 23 great episodes from the fourth season, great packaging, and great extras. The DVD is coming out on Sept. 11, just in time for the fifth season premiere on Sept. 24 on ABC. ABC has been re-airing the show this summer on Saturdays before moving back to Mondays in late August. So I hope you saw them all, if not, for sure get this DVD. And if you've never watched an episode, the series is coming to syndication this Fall! On TNT Wednesdays beginning Sept. 26 and in weekend syndication in broadcast syndication beginning the weekend of Sept. 29-30, so check your local listings for time and station! Everyone needs to be watching this show and I think it will get even better this season as we leave off on the happy moment from the fourth season finale. That was one of the the best season finales on TV last season, as this show always delivers. The electrifying chemistry between Fillion and Katic continues, and you all need to buy the set by clicking below to see it for yourself! The video is digitally mastered and is in widescreen and looks very good! The audio is great and sounds very good, as it is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Both the audio and video are similar to the previous sets. This is from 2011-2012, so it had better be good. There is nothing to complain at all here...it is perfect! Perfection here. There are about 7 chapter stops per episode. We get to hear the closing theme as well, whistles and all! All of the "previously on Castle" teasers that were used in a few episodes are intact. Not much to report here, but that is a good thing since this part of the DVDs are always perfect. I wish we had a Blu-ray version of this show and that would be beyond perfection! Imagine watching Stana Katic in Blu-ray (or Nathan Fillion for you females out there)!
Moving on the bonus features. We get audio commentaries again, for the second straight set. We also have audio commentary for the season premiere "Rise" from executive producer Rob Bowman, and stars Jon Huertas, Seamus Dever & Tamala Jones. This is very informative and fun as these are a fun group of people. On to disc two, we have an audio commentary on the fun episode "Handcuffed" from showrunner Andrew Marlowe, writer Terri Miller, and stars Nathan Fillion & Stana Katic! These guys are just as fun as the guys from the other audio commentary! For disc three, we have a deleted scene from the episode "Dial M for Mayor" (1:05). We also have audio commentary on the classic episode "The Blue Butterfly." This was the 1940s style episode and commenting are writer Terence Paul Winker, costume designer Luke Reichle, and stars Susan Sullivan, Tamala Jones & Molly C. Quinn. It's great to see them getting nearly every main series star on these commentaries! Disc four has two more deleted scenes: "Linchpin" (2:00) and "A Dance with Death" (0:42).
On to disc five, where the bulk of the extras are! We have deleted scenes for two episodes: "Headhunters" (0:17) and "Always" (1:02, 0:31, 0:25, 0:43). Nice to see four different deleted scenes from the season finale! Onto the main features, we have a cool radio series featurette titled "Nathan & Friends: Castle Goes Radio." We have Nathan and his friends performing the show Thrilling Adventure Hour before a live audience in a show broadcast in the style of an old-time radio drama. Very cool! First up for this we have "Making the Show" (11:42). Molly C. Quinn hosts and narrates this special on the radio show. We have interviews with Nathan Fillion, Ben Blacker, Ben Acker, Rick Sickler (Castle AD), Ruby Stillwater (Castle 2nd AD), Marc Evan Jackson and Jenny Wade. We also see Busy Philipps and David Anders on stage! There are two episodes in full for you to watch! "Sparks Nevada: Marshal on Mars" (21:15) and Cactoid Jim: King of the Martian Frontier (21:41). And if you click on the coffee cup, we get A Word From WorkJuice Coffee (4:30).
Next we have "Submerged: An In-Depth Look At Stunts" (17:32). We are taken to the heart-stopping car stunt from this season's two-part episode! Interviewed are Andrew Marlowe, Nathan Fillion, Rob Bowman, Dennis Madalone (stunt coordinator), Rich Sickler (first AD), Stana Katic, Bob Calvert (special effects coordinator), Barry K. Up next we have "Bowman, Bowman & Castle" (10:24). On this featurette, we are taken a behind the scenes look from the episode "The Blue Butterfly" where Rob Bowman called on his father Chuck Bowman to direct! Interviewed are Andrew Marlowe, Nathan Fillion, Rob Bowman, Mr. Chuck Bowman, Seamus Dever, Stana Katic, Jon Huertas, and Stephen Bowman (post production coordinator). Bowman's are wild like deuces! Finally, we have some "Bloopers" (4:22)...yes all the hilarious flubs and outtakes! See all the goofs and play on the set, as we get a bit more bloopers this time!
Another wonderful season and set! Season 4 is a pivotal season in the relationship between Castle and Beckett. I recommend this series and set once again...it is an ABC Studios DVD, so it is good and filled with special features. This series is really cooking, from start to finish. Season two was when it started to break out, and it continues and gets better in seasons three and four! This DVD is awesome as we get of course all 23 great episodes from the fourth season, great packaging, and great extras. The DVD is coming out on Sept. 11, just in time for the fifth season premiere on Sept. 24 on ABC. ABC has been re-airing the show this summer on Saturdays before moving back to Mondays in late August. So I hope you saw them all, if not, for sure get this DVD. And if you've never watched an episode, the series is coming to syndication this Fall! On TNT Wednesdays beginning Sept. 26 and in weekend syndication in broadcast syndication beginning the weekend of Sept. 29-30, so check your local listings for time and station! Everyone needs to be watching this show and I think it will get even better this season as we leave off on the happy moment from the fourth season finale. That was one of the the best season finales on TV last season, as this show always delivers. The electrifying chemistry between Fillion and Katic continues, and you all need to buy the set by clicking below to see it for yourself! This fifth season was once again excellent and filled with lots of drama. Perhaps the best episode of the series is in this season with "Who We Are" as I think it is as good as season four's "Did You Hear What Happened To Charlotte King." The season was very well written once again, but that episode and story arc stands out. The sixth season premieres on Sept. 25 and we cannot wait for that. Anyway, as for season five, some memorable episodes include the season premiere, "God Laughs," where Sam, Cooper, Charlotte and Amelia team up to save the life of their friend Pete after he suffers a heart attack, while Violet, who was in the middle of leaving Pete and Los Angeles, is nowhere to be found, also Addison's desire to have a baby leads her to see Jake Reilly, her recent mystery man, in a most surprising place and Sheldon tries to help Amelia in her battle with alcohol. In "Deal With It," Jake enlists Addison to help a 20-year old, without a uterus, have a baby of her own and just as Cooper and Charlotte make amends, an old fling of Cooper's shows up at the practice with her 8-year old son, Mason. In "Remember Me," Cooper receives the surprise of his life when Erica, a woman from his past, informs him that her 8-year old son is his, but Charlotte insists on a paternity test, over Erica's protests. In the classic episode "Who We Are," the doctors at Seaside Wellness decide that Amelia is spiraling downhill, and they want to save her, so they host an intervention so they can help, but things don't go as planned when Amelia's boyfriend walks in and she storms out, high on Oxi, that Addison gave her so she would stay for the intervention and at the end of the episode, Amelia and her boyfriend, Ryan, decide to go to rehab together, get clean, and then get married...but they want to first finish off the drugs she has left. In "Too Much," Sam finds his estranged sister, Corinne, in jail, heavily medicated and near-catatonic, and brings her to Sheldon for help, while Erica begins secret treatments for her cancer and refuses to let Cooper and Charlotte tell Mason, while Cooper, Pete and Addison treat the baby of a drug addict and things between Violet and Scott continue to heat up in the bedroom.
In a crossover episode with Grey's Anatomy, "You Break My Heart," Cooper and Charlotte take Erica to Seattle Grace to meet with Derek (Special Guest Star Patrick Dempsey), Lexie (Special Guest Star Chyler Leigh) and Amelia regarding a very risky surgery. In "The Letting Go," Erica's cancer has spread, and she must face the prospect of finally saying good-bye to Mason, while Amelia decides to tell Addison the news about her pregnancy, while Sheldon promises to "be there" for her. In "It Was Inevitable," Charlotte and Cooper try to help Mason come to terms with Erica's rapidly deteriorating condition, while Pete and Violet discover they still have feelings for each other and Addison tries to help Amelia embrace motherhood, while a patient chooses Addison to be the adoptive mother of her son. In "Drifting Back," when a patient's father and partner can't agree on his health care, Pete makes a decision, while Jake suspects Amelia is being tempted to substance abuse, and Addison and Sam have difficulty defining their relationship. On the season finale, "Gone, Baby, Gone," the Seaside doctors go to Amelia's side as she begins labor, while Pete and Violet realize how they feel about each other and Addison must make a decision.

There is also a section detailing the bonus features box with technical specifications also. Opening the case, on the left panel there is an insert and on the left and right panels itself we have a disc-by-disc breakdown with episode titles and bonus features and nice episodic photos. As for that insert, they are for other ABC Studios products coming on DVD. We have two little plastic holders, that we can flip like a page on a book. "Breaking the Rules" (0:58), "Step One" (1:19 and 1:33), "Who We Are" (1:10), "The Breaking Point" (0:53), "The Time Has Come" (0:37), "Andromeda" (1:11), "It Was Inevitable" (0:34), "And Then There Was One" (1:16), "Drifting Back" (0:46) and "Gone, Baby, Gone" (0:56 and 1:58). Once again, I recommend this series and set...it is an ABC Studios DVD, so it is good and filled with special features. We have the same amount of extras as last time, I think. Not as much as like the season two set, but still good. The packaging is good and the overlapping discs are not present once again. This season was great and it had one of the series' best episode to date I think. If you haven't see that episode, you really should. It is a nice arc that started before this episode and continues, so you'll want to know what happens to Amelia next. Also the Mason and Erica story is great. And tune in for sure on Sept. 25 for the sixth season premiere, but you need to refresh yourself, catch up with these 22 season five episodes first! Mason probably lost her mother, but that boy is very wise...and you should be wise too and buy this set!

Finally, we have some "Bloopers" (3:46)...yes, always great to see bloopers! See all the goofs and play on the set! The timing is up just two minutes from the last set, so that is cool! Wish we had more extra, but this is still good.
Once again, I recommend this series and set...it is an ABC Studios DVD, so it is good and filled with special features. We have the same amount of extras as last time, I think. Not as much as like the season two set, but still good. The packaging is good and the overlapping discs are not present once again. This season was great and it had one of the series' best episode to date I think. If you haven't see that episode, you really should. It is a nice arc that started before this episode and continues, so you'll want to know what happens to Amelia next. Also the Mason and Erica story is great. And tune in for sure on Sept. 25 for the sixth season premiere, but you need to refresh yourself, catch up with these 22 season five episodes first! Mason probably lost her mother, but that boy is very wise...and you should be wise too and buy this set!
