Remembering Linda Lavin of Alice; Hulu Releases Chad Powers Teaser

Tony-winning actress Linda Lavin, who starred as Alice Hyatt in Alice, has died. She died in Los Angeles of complications from lung cancer on December 29. Ms. Lavin was 87.
Lavin moved to Hollywood in 1973 and began to work on television. She made her first sitcom guest appearance as Linda Monroe in a 1974 episode of Rhoda. She had a recurring role as Detective Janice Wentworth in five episodes of Barney Miller during the first and second seasons (1975-1976). In 1976, she guest starred as Margaret Gates in an episode of Phyllis.
She starred as Alice Hyatt in the 1976-1985 CBS sitcom Alice. The series is based on the 1974 film Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Alice Hyatt is a widow who moves with her young son to start life over again, and finds a job as a waitress working at the roadside Mel's Diner in Phoenix, Arizona. Lavin performed the series' theme song, "There's a New Girl in Town," which was written by David Shire and Alan and Marilyn Bergman and was updated for each of the first six seasons. During the series' nine-season run, Lavin earned two Golden Globe Awards in 1978 and 1979 and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 1979.
Lavin directed 10 episodes of the series from 1980 to 1984. In a handful of episodes, Alice put on a double-breasted suit and fedora to assume the character of husky-voiced "Sam Butler", a mobster she made up as a ruse to fool her intended target. She also played a dual role as Debbie Walden, the wizened and former landlady of the character Vera Louise Gorman-Novak. The cast of Alice included Vic Tayback, Beth Howland, Polly Holliday (1976-1980), Philip McKeon, Diane Ladd (1980-1981), Celia Weston (1981-1985), and Charles Levin (1983-1985). Recurring cast members included Marvin Kaplan (1977-1985), Dave Madden (1978-1985), Martha Raye (1978-1984), Duane R. Campbell (1978-1985), Tony Longo (1981-1984), and Alan Haufrect (1978-1980).
She starred as Edie Kurland in the 1992-1993 ABC sitcom Room for Two. Edie Kurland is the mother of Jill Kurland (Patricia Heaton), an executive producer of a New York City television show called Wake Up, New York. Edie has her own segment called "Just a Thought" at the end of the program. The series also starred Peter Michael Goetz, Paula Kelly, Bess Meyer, Andrew Prine, John Putch, and Jeff Yagher.
Lavin starred as Florie Bloom in the short-lived 1998 NBC sitcom Conrad Bloom. The show is centered around Conrad Bloom (Mark Feuerstein), a copywriter in New York City, looking for love whilst trying to pursue his career. Florie Bloom is Conrad's guilt-inducing mom. The series also starred Lauren Graham, Jessica Stone, Ever Carradine, Paula Newsome, and Steve Landesberg.
She starred as Lorna Harrison in the short-lived 2013-2014 NBC sitcom Sean Saves the World. Sean Harrison (Sean Hayes) is a divorced gay father with a successful, yet demanding, career. Lorna Harrison is Sean's pushy, meddling mother. The series also starred Megan Hilty, Echo Kellum, Samantha Isler, and Thomas Lennon.
Lavin reunited with Mark Feuerstein in the short-lived 2017-2018 CBS sitcom 9JKL. She starred as Judy Roberts, the mother of Josh Roberts. Josh Roberts (Mark Feuerstein), a divorced actor whose TV series was recently cancelled, moves back to New York City and lives in apartment 9K. His family lives in adjacent apartments: his parents live in 9J, while his brother, sister-in-law, and their newborn baby live in 9L. The cast included Elliott Gould, Liza Lapira, David Walton, Albert Tsai, and Matt Murray.
She starred as Norma Goldman in the 2020-2022 CBS sitcom B Positive. Norma Goldman is one of the senior citizens at Valley Hills assisted living facility. She has a maternal, nurturing relationship with Gina (Annaleigh Ashford), but she can be fairly randy, irresponsible, and demanding. The cast included Kether Donohue, Sara Rue, Izzy G, David Anthony Higgins, and Darryl Stephens.
Lavin guest starred as Phyllis in two episodes of Mom in 2016. Some of her other comedy credits included Bob's Burgers (voice, 2 episodes), Santa Clarita Diet (4 episodes as Jean), Brockmire, and No Good Deed (3 episodes as Phyllis Adelman). She was filming the upcoming Hulu multi-camera comedy series Mid-Century Modern. She was starring as Sybil Schneiderman, Bunny Schneiderman's (Nathan Lane) mother.
Some of her other television guest appearnaces included Harry O, Family, Kaz, Touched by an Angel, The Sopranos, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, The O.C. (3 episodes), The Good Wife (3 episodes), Bones, Madam Secretary, and Elsbeth.
She won a Tony Award in 1987 for Best Actress in a Play and her second Drama Desk Award for her role as Kate in Neil Simon's play Broadway Bound. She received Tony Award nominations for her work in Last of the Red Hot Lovers (1970), The Diary of Anne Frank (1998), The Tale of the Allergist's Wife (2001), Collected Stories (2010), and The Lyons (2012).
Ms. Lavin was a talented actress and singer. She was funny and memorable as Alice Hyatt for nine seasons in Alice. She made all of the sitcoms she appeared in much better. We thank her for the laughs and entertainment she brought us during her career. She will be greatly missed.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Cable Networks No Longer a Priority for Paramount; Paramount+ Removes Vintage Nickelodeon Series
Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! We're in the middle of our second slow news week, but we have some news about cable networks no longer being a priority, more streaming service removals, and more. Let's get going!
HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
- As cable networks have been dying a slow death, it has been long assumed that the networks that have been around since cable began are still strong and a priority, but this week we learned that Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, and BET are no longer a priority for Paramount, and that there is a good chance they'll be sold off. (AV Club)
- Meanwhile, although they're saying cable is not a priority, Paramount+ has proved that cord cutting works both way, as this week they've removed several vintage Nickelodeon series (including Doug) from the service. (Cord Cutters News)
- It's a bit peculiar that it took is so long to get the first look at it (maybe an acknowledgment that TV executives don't think as much about broadcast TV anymore?), but we have our first look at Fox's new sitcom Going Dutch, which debuts next week. (SitcomsOnline)
- Warner Home Video hasn't totally given up on DVD, as they have The Wayans Bros. - The Complete Series coming to DVD in February. (SitcomsOnline)
WEEKLY PLANNER (DECEMBER 28 - JANUARY 3)
- The Catchy Comedy Binge this weekend (which, we should point out, this is the last weekend that their binge will air on Saturday and Sunday, as they will be Sunday only starting next weekend and Saturday will be regular programming with a few short-lived series mixed in.
- The new comedy Going Dutch debuts Thursday on Fox.
- MTV changes their lineup a bit starting Wednesday, with reruns of Friends and The Big Bang Theory, and significantly reduced (but still several hours a day) airings of Ridiculousness.
- There will be plenty of New Year's marathons, but of course, Twilight Zone is the one that we all think of, and both H&I and Syfy will have those.

Discovery Home Entertainment brings The Wayans Bros.: The Complete Series to DVD for the first time ever on February 4, 2025. The DVD set includes 101 episodes from all five seasons. Pre-order your copy today.
Premiering in 1995, The Wayans Bros. quickly became a fan favorite with its hilarious mix of family dynamics, quirky characters, and memorable one-liners. Following the misadventures of two distinctly different brothers sharing an apartment in New York City, the series was a cultural touchstone for '90s television blending physical humor, clever wit, and heartfelt moments.
Shawn Wayans (In Living Color, Scary Movie, White Chicks) and Marlon Wayans (Scary Movie, In Living Color, White Chicks, The Ladykillers) — real-life brothers and members of the prolific Wayans family — star in this hilarious and physical comedy series as Shawn and Marlon Williams, two very different brothers who live together in New York City while searching for success. As the series begins, Shawn wants to be promoted from delivery man to dispatcher to impress his girlfriend, Lisa (Lela Rochon – Waiting to Exhale, Any Given Sunday). Marlon works in the diner operated by his and Shawn’s father, Pops (John Witherspoon – Friday, The Tracy Morgan Show, Boomerang, The Boondocks). The two brothers often get into trouble with their moneymaking schemes — but it’s always entertaining to watch! The series also features numerous notable guest stars.
The Wayans Bros. was created by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Leslie Ray, and David Steven Simon. The production companies involved were BabyWay Productions, Next to Last Productions, and Warner Bros. Television. The executive producers varied by season, including Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore in the first season, Rick Hawkins in the second season, and Phil Kellard & Tom Moore from the third to the fifth season.

That's 4 Entertainment had its 5th Annual Christmas Con last weekend (December 13-15) at the Expo Convention Center in Edison, NJ. They celebrated with a bang with the most jam packed line-up ever. We were on the red carpet with all the details. The festivities were hosted by Jenna Leigh Green (Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Broadway's Wicked) and Official Headliner Lacey Chabert. Highlights from the event included: guests doing meet and greets with the attending talent for group and solo photo ops, autographs and selfies. The weekend was jampacked with celebrity panels sharing personal stories and moderated by Executive Editor, TV & Events at People – Breanne Heldman. The weekend also included an Ugly Sweater Contest, Sleight that Song and Celebrity Reindeer Game, but the highlight of course was that fans got to enjoy their moment to get an autograph and photo with their favorite Christmas stars!
Additionally, Hallmark's extremely popular Three Wiser Men and a Boy was screened on Friday night with stars Paul Campbell, Tyler Hynes, Andrew Walker and Kimberley Sustad. On Saturday, Nikki DeLoach hosted the "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas Con” Concert featuring Drew Seeley, Lindsey Alley and Tony Lucca. But the highlight for us was the Red Carpet event on Saturday morning where we asked the stars about their new Christmas projects, their Christmas traditions, what they are doing for Christmas, what Christmas Con experiences have been like, and of course their favorite sitcom Christmas episode.
Check out our YouTube page for all of the stars that graced the red carpet including The Wonder Years' Danica McKellar, James Denton, Jessica Lowndes, Meghan Ory, Cameron Mathison, Michael Rady and host Jenna Leigh Green! It was a great Christmas Con and the best one yet! We are still hoping Teri Hatcher joins! She has been starring in many Christmas movies over the last few years. And many staples of Hallmark/Lifetime Christmas movies that have yet to appear include Christa B. Allen, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Laura Vandervoort and Julie Gonzalo. Hopefully they come next year! Stay tuned as we will be on hand for the '90s Con in Hartford once again this March!

SitcomsOnline Digest: Creative Team Put in Place for Big Bang Theory Spinoff; Girls5eva Canceled at Netflix
Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! It's a slow pre-Christmas week, but we've got news about The Big Bang Theory (times two!), the cancelation of a Netflix series, and more. Let's get going!
HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
- We are one step closer to a spinoff of The Big Bang Theory on Max. (Deadline)
- Girls5eva has been canceled (again). (Deadline)
- It seems like a mostly inconsequential story for our sitcom fans, but Hallmark+ is changing their strategy for streaming movies that launch on Hallmark Channel to a "next day" strategy as opposed to "some point in the future," another sign that cable TV may be dying. (Cord Cutters News)
- Cable news ratings, particularly at CNN, have been awful post-election, and given that the way younger audiences consume news is changing and relies a whole lot less upon cable TV, there are serious questions about the future of cable news. (Cord Cutters News)
- Deborah Norville has been selected to host a new game show. (Deadline)
- Nick at Nite and MTV (which we're amazed has found any space on their lineup bin the middle of their five year long marathon of Ridiculousness) are both adding The Big Bang Theory to their lineup, starting next week. (SitcomsOnline)
WEEKLY PLANNER (DECEMBER 21 - DECEMBER 27)
- It's a "Christmas Carol" binge of Carol Burnett and Friends on Catchy Comedy this weekend.
- As previously mentioned, The Big Bang Theory is headed to Nick at Nite, starting Tuesday.
- There will be plenty of Christmas marathons (too many to mention here!) next week, but for fans of classic sitcoms, the most comprehensive one will be Antenna TV's Classic Christmas Collection, which will air on Tuesday, and their Christmas Through the Years marathon on Wednesday.
