SitcomsOnline Digest: Harry Shearer to Remain on The Simpsons; South Park Renewed for Three More Seasons

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! Last week it was The Dukes of Hazzard and this week it is everything Cosby (round 2) when it comes to networks pulling series. Additionally, we have updates on some animated series, including how Mr. Burns will not have a different sounding voice on The Simpsons and news of South Park that will mean new episodes through the end of the decade. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • As it turns out, Harry Shearer will be staying on The Simpsons after all. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • South Park has been renewed for three more seasons, bringing it to a 23rd season... yet it will still only make it up to 300 episodes before the end of the upcoming renewal period. (IGN)
  • Irwin Keyes, known to sitcom fans for his role in the later seasons of The Jeffersons as George's bodyguard Hugo, died this week. (Entertainment Weekly)
  • Almost exactly fifteen years after Kathie Lee left Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, the duo will be reunited again as Regis becomes a contributor on the fourth hour of Today on NBC. (CNNMoney)
  • Keith Olbermann is leaving another job (this time at ESPN2), but unlike the previous times he has left a job, he is handling things pretty well this time. (Vanity Fair)
  • For the past 31 years, you could depend on always being able to catch The Cosby Show in new episodes or in reruns on TV somewhere. That has abruptly ended this week as the last cable network to air it pulled it, although it does continue to air on a few local TV stations for right now. (SitcomsOnline)

HOME MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Mill Creek continues to move ahead with their releases of Sony series on DVD, with The Partridge Family - The Complete Series and Good Times - The Complete Series both arriving on September 1.

Kevin from Work

ABC Family announced that new comedy series Kevin from Work will premiere with back-to-back episodes on Wednesday, August 12 at 8:00PM & 8:30PM ET/PT. Returning hit comedy Young & Hungry will join the Wednesday comedy line up the following week on Wednesday, August 19 at 8:30PM ET/PT. Reality series Job or No Job rounds out the Wednesday line-up, with the series premiering on Wednesday, August 5 at 9:02 PM ET/PT following the finales of Melissa & Joey and Baby Daddy.

Kevin from Work launches with back-to-back episodes on Wednesday, August 12 at 8:00PM & 8:30PM ET/PT. The half-hour workplace comedy is centered on Kevin, a young man who declares his unrequited love for his coworker Audrey in a letter, believing he’ll never see her again after he accepts a job overseas. But when the opportunity falls through and Kevin is forced to return to his old job, how will he and Audrey continue to work together now that his feelings are no longer secret? The comedy stars Noah Reid as Kevin, Paige Spara as Audrey, Matt Murray as Brian, Jordan Hinson as Roxie, Punam Patel as Patti, with recurring guest star Amy Sedaris (Strangers with Candy) as Julia. Kevin from Work will air in its regularly scheduled time slot Wednesdays at 8:00 PM ET/PT starting August 19. The summer season of Young & Hungry will premiere on Wednesday, August 19 at 8:30PM ET/PT. The midseason finale left off with Gabi (Emily Osment) leaving Josh (Jonathan Sadowski) behind to start a dream job in Switzerland, just as they were finally poised to take their relationship to the next level. When the show returns, Gabi and Josh must decide what their next step is, both professionally and personally.

Susan Sarandon

Premium TV network EPIX® announced that Oscar®-winning actress Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking), has been cast to star with Nick Nolte in Graves, a single-camera half-hour political satire produced by Lionsgate. Sarandon will play Margaret Graves, the wife of former U.S. President Richard Graves (Nolte), who decides to follow her own political ambitions just as her husband embarks on a Don Quixote-like journey to right the wrongs of his administration. Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) created the project and will write and executive produce the 10-episode series. Stern will also direct select episodes. Oscar®-winning producer Greg Shapiro (The Hurt Locker), Keith Eisner (The Good Wife) and Eric Weinberg (Anger Management) are also executive producers. Production on the series is scheduled to begin this fall and premiere on EPIX in Autumn 2016. Graves marks the second project in which Nolte and Sarandon play a married couple. In 1992 they starred in Lorenzo's Oil, a true-life drama of a father and mother who battle against the odds to find a cure to save their son afflicted with a rare disease.

Bounce Pulls Cosby, Centric Removes Cosby Show; All Voice Talent Remain on The Simpsons for Seasons 27 and 28

Cosby The Cosby Show

With the latest developments surrounding actor/comedian Bill Cosby, Bounce TV will cease airing the television series Cosby (1996-2000 series) effective immediately. Bounce TV is a broadcast network carried by local television stations with corresponding cable carriage. It is the fastest-growing African-American (AA) network on television and the #2 most-watched AA network. Bounce TV is available in more than 85 million homes across 90 markets, 90% of African American television homes -- including all of the top AA television markets -- and three quarters of the total television homes in the United States. In addition, Centric has also pulled reruns of Bill Cosby's more popular sitcom The Cosby Show from its line-up. Centric was airing the sitcom weekdays at 9am and 4-5pm, while Bounce TV was airing Cosby weekdays 5-6pm. Now both The Cosby Show and Cosby are not airing anywhere in the U.S. TV Land stopped airing The Cosby Show months ago, while Aspire TV stopped airing the '70s sitcom The Bill Cosby Show.

Dawn Wells

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale... on a beloved classic TV sitcom! MeTV, Memorable Entertainment Television and America's #1 All Classic TV Network, celebrates the best in classic television and timeless characters. And we have some news on the best in television and timeless characters. Dawn Wells, known as the fan favorite castaway Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island, will host the MeTV special event "Mary Ann's Three Hour Tour" featuring her six favorite episodes from the classic comedy on Sunday, July 19 from 7-10pm ET. Gilligan's Island is the story of a three-hour boat tour that stranded the eclectic cast on a remote island. Now Dawn Wells shares her favorite episodes, memories and funny moments from the show with MeTV viewers. This three hour special will include an exclusive interview with Wells. Episodes airing in this three-hour tour are: "The Postman Cometh," "Feed The Kitty," "The Friendly Physician," "And Then There Were None" and "The Second Ginger Grant." Gilligan's Island airs regularly weeknights at 6pm, Saturdays 6-7am and Sundays 9-10am only on MeTV!

UnREAL

Lifetime has renewed its critically acclaimed scripted series UnREAL (#UnREALTV) for a second season with a 10-episode order. Produced by A+E Studios, UnREAL will return next year. To date, the first three episodes of the provocative drama, which stars Shiri Appleby and Constance Zimmer, and gives a fictitious behind-the-scenes glimpse into the chaos surrounding the production of a dating competition program, are averaging more than 4.8 million views across all available platforms. Airing on Mondays at 10:00pm ET/PT, UnREAL is Lifetime's youngest scripted series ever, with a median age of 43. Set against the backdrop of the hit dating competition show Everlasting, UnREAL is led by flawed heroine Rachel Goldberg (Appleby), a young producer whose sole job is to manipulate her relationships with, and among, the contestants to get the vital dramatic and outrageous footage that the program’s dispassionate executive producer, Quinn King (Zimmer), demands. What ensues is an eye-opening look at what happens in the outrageous world of unscripted television, where being a contestant can be vicious and being a producer is a whole other reality.

UnREAL also stars Craig Bierko as Everlasting’s eccentric creator, Chet; and Freddie Stroma as the dating show's handsome and intelligent suitor, Adam Cromwell. Josh Kelly plays Jeremy, a cameraman who is Rachel's ex-boyfriend, while Jeffrey Bowyer Chapman is Jay, a field producer whose ambitions run far beyond the show, at times putting him at odds with Rachel. Everlasting's contestants include Grace, portrayed by Nathalie Kelley, who immediately wins Adam's heart; Anna, played by Johanna Braddy, who is classy and shrewd, with her eye on the prize; Faith, a sensitive and vulnerable tomboy from the South portrayed by Breeda Wool; and Mary, played by Ashley Scott, a gorgeous single mom who has been unlucky in love. Arielle Kebbel guest stars as Britney, a contestant who has no filter and isn't on Everlasting to make any friends.

Building Belushi with Jim Belushi Premieres July 11; Donald Glover FX Pilot Underway

Building Belushi

Get ready According to Jim fans, we have a premiere date for Jim Belushi's new project that we told you about! Performer, actor, comedian and musician Jim Belushi is coming to DIY Network in Building Belushi. The six-episode series, which premieres on Saturday, July 11, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, follows Jim and his team of experts as they build a riverfront retreat cabin outside of Medford in Southern Oregon. For Jim, it's been a busy three decades, with starring roles in films, television, and on Broadway, and of course on the long-running television sitcom According to Jim. He also tours the country with his improv comedy troupe The Board of Comedy, The Sacred Hearts Band and alongside Dan Ackroyd as The Blues Brothers. Belushi says he is now looking forward to unwinding on the river with friends and family. Jim, a home-renovation enthusiast, is ready for this challenge on the Rogue River. After purchasing 13 acres of a former 1930s Elks picnic ground, Jim and his team begin the process of constructing his own retreat cabin. In each episode, Jim seeks to craft his vision to fit with the powerful and spiritual Rogue River and its surrounding natural landscape. Yet, he has to manage the often unpredictable realities and set-backs of home building and renovation.

Donald Glover

The FX Networks Donald Glover (Community) comedy pilot Atlanta (which we first told you about in 2014) has cast its lead actors as production gets underway this month. Brian Tyree Henry, Lakeith Lee Stanfield and Zazie Beetz will star in the pilot along with Glover, who created and wrote the pilot. Hiro Murai will direct the pilot, which will be produced by FX Productions and begin shooting in Atlanta at the end of July. Atlanta revolves around two cousins on their way up through the Atlanta rap scene whose opposing views on art versus commerce, success and race will make their quest anything but easy. Donald Glover will play a loner who left Atlanta only to return; now working an unglamorous job and barely getting by. When his cousin Alfred becomes Atlanta's hot rapper, Earn sees an opportunity to manage Alfred's career. Brian Tyree Henry (Vice Principals) will play Atlanta's hot of the moment rapper who plans to capitalize on the sudden fame as quickly as possible. Lakeith Lee Stanfield (Short Term 12) will play Alfred's oddly talented right-hand man and musical collaborator. Zazie Beetz (the upcoming Finding Her) will play a pragmatist caught up in a complicated relationship with Earn (Donald Glover) due to their daughter.
