81st Golden Globe Winners; Sort Of Returns for Final Season

The 81st Golden Globe Awards honored the best in film and American television of 2023, as chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The ceremony was held Sunday night (January 9), from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, with it being aired live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ Jo Koy hosted the ceremony. The big television winners were Succession and The Bear with three wins each. The Bear won for Best Television Series - Musical/Comedy. The Bear star Ayo Edebiri won for Best Television Actress - Musical/Comedy Series. The Bear's Jeremy Allen White won for Best Television Actor - Musical/Comedy Series once again. Ricky Gervais won for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television for his special Ricky Gervais: Armageddon. See the full list of winners.

Sort Of

The eight-episode third and final season of the Peabody Award-winning Max Original comedy series Sort Of debuts with two episodes Thursday, January 18 on Max followed by two episodes weekly through February 8. The series is a co-production with CBC and Sphere Media. Sabi comes to terms with feelings of grief and an unexpected sense of freedom following the death of their father. Without the constraints of living up to dad’s expectations, Sabi confronts big questions about their identity, prompting some massive life choices. In a season that has the entire ensemble grappling with aftermaths, a rebirth comes in a sort of messy, sort of hopeful, sort of Sort Of way.

HBO Max Comedy Sort Of Returning for Season 3; Hulu Orders Dan Levy Animated Comedy

HBO Max and CBC have renewed the Peabody Award-winning comedy series Sort Of for a third season. The Max Original comedy series is a co-production with CBC and Sphere Media. Created by Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo, the second season of the critically acclaimed comedy about a gender fluid millennial in transition in every aspect of their life debuted December 1 on HBO Max, following the Canadian premiere on CBC/CBC Gem in November, and will conclude with the final two episodes of the season on December 22. A coming-of-age story, Sort Of exposes the labels we once poured ourselves into as no longer applicable... to anyone.

Standing By

Hulu has ordered Dan Levy and Ally Pankiw's Standing By to series from 20th Television Animation. The series order is on the heels of several productions from 20th Television Animation for Hulu Originals including Solar Opposites (which was just picked up for a fifth season), Futurama, and Koala Man, which premieres Jan. 9. Schitt's Creek, from Levy, is now streaming on Hulu. Levy will executive produce the series, which comes from his previous overall deal at ABC Signature, under his Not A Real Production Company banner. Standing By is a satirical look into the lives of a group of eternally bound, disgruntled guardian angels and the lessons they’ll eventually learn from not only the dysfunctional humans they’re in charge of protecting but also each other. The series stars Dan Levy, David Tennant, Natalie Palamides, Glenn Close, Poppy Liu and Samira Wiley.

The second season of the Max Original comedy series Sort Of debuts Thursday, December 1 on HBO Max followed by two new episodes weekly through December 22. The eight-episode second season of Sort Of is the season of love. Love includes your friends, family, work, romantic love and, most importantly, one’s self-love. Sabi decides that not only are they ready for some uncomplicated romance but they also want everyone to love each other. Unfortunately, Sabi is faced with situations and relationships that are anything but simple, including their dad’s unexpected return from Dubai, the Kaneko-Bauers’ struggles as Bessy is released from rehab and issues at Bar Bük.

New Smurfs Series Premieres Sept. 10 on Nick; HBO Max Orders New Comedy Sort Of

Blue and small, and standing only three apples tall, The Smurfs are set to make their Nickelodeon debut in an all-new series premiering Friday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT). The news was announced by Nickelodeon, the number-one network for kids, and LAFIG Belgium and IMPS, the worldwide licensors for The Smurfs, alongside the official trailer reveal for the CG-animated series, which follows the beloved characters embarking upon rousing adventures. All-new episodes will continue to rollout Friday nights on Nickelodeon and debut internationally in the fall.

The original series marks the return of the globally renowned characters to television for the first time in nearly 40 years and follows Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, Hefty, Clumsy and the other inhabitants of Smurf Village on all-new adventures, packed with humor, heart and high-stakes action. In the premiere episode, "Smurf-Fu," when Smurfette rescues Brainy from a giant snake, the other Smurfs ask her to teach them "Smurf-Fu." Next in, "Diaper Daddy," when everyone is tired of changing Baby's diapers, Handy decides to invent a robot that will do the job.

The voice cast pushing the charm and absurdity of the original comics to even greater heights includes: David Freeman (7 Promises) as Papa Smurf, the father figure keeping the other Smurfs in line; Berangere McNeese (Matriochkas) as Smurfette, a curious Smurf who is always ready to take part in new adventures; Lenny Mark Irons (No Man's Land) as Gargamel, a conniving human wizard with a bottomless thirst to capture Smurfs; Youssef El Kaoukibi (NRJ Belgium) as Brainy, who considers himself the smartest of the bunch; and Catherine Hershey (Boundary Games) as Willow, the brave and wise matriarch of a new tribe of girl Smurfs.

Sort Of

HBO Max announced a new eight-episode half-hour comedy series Sort Of, created by Bilal Baig (Acha Bacha) and Fab Filippo (Save Me). Commissioned by HBO Max and the CBC, the series is produced by Sienna Films, a Sphere Media company with the participation of the Canada Media Fund. Sort Of follows the journey of Sabi Mehboob (Baig), a gender fluid millennial who straddles various identities from sexy bartender at an LGBTQ bookstore/bar, to the youngest child in a large Pakistani family, to the de facto parent of a downtown hipster family. Sabi feels like they’re in transition in every aspect of their life, from gender to love to sexuality to family to career. A coming-of-age story, Sort Of exposes the labels we once poured ourselves into as no longer applicable...to anyone.
