SitcomsOnline Digest: New Episodes of The Simpsons Headed Exclusively to Disney+; Release Date Set for Reboot of A Different World

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we're hearing about new episodes of The Simpsons (that'll be exclusively on streaming), a premiere date for a reboot of a classic series, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • Get ready for a mini-season of summer episodes of The Simpsons, but they will be available exclusively on Disney+. (Deadline)
  • A release date for the reboot of A Different World has been set, and it is exactly 39 years after the original. (Variety)
  • CBS is defending their decision to replace The Late Show with Stephen Colbert with Comics Unleashed, which is doing a terrible job of attracting viewers. (Deadline)
  • Meanwhile, over at the news side for CBS, there are huge changes coming to 60 Minutes despite being successful in the ratings. (AP News)
  • Jay Daniel, executive producer for Roseanne, Moonlighting, and Cybill, has died. (Deadline)
  • Director Howard Storm, known for his work on Mork & Mindy, Valerie, Rhoda, and many other series (even including Kenan & Kel), has died at age 94. (Deadline)
  • CNN typically has Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen host a countdown for New Year's Eve, so why not do another one for the countdown to Independence Day for the 250th birthday of America? (Rolling Stone)
  • Hallmark has new movies planned every Saturday night in June. (SitcomsOnline)
WEEKLY PLANNER (MAY 30 - JUNE 5)

  • Season 3 of Password debuts Tuesday on NBC, as well as the new season of America's Got Talent.
  • Pluto TV will be streaming Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's movies produced by Dualstar starting Monday, though there is no indication the sitcoms created through that company will be included.

SitcomsOnline Digest: WGA Strike Officially Over; ABC Cancels Home Economics

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, the strike is over... well, half of it anyway. We're learning when late night talk shows will be returning (hint: it's very soon), we have news of the cancellation of an ABC sitcom, and discovering a long list of series that will be removed from Hulu very soon, today to be specific. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • The WGA strike has finally come to a close, and late night talk shows are planning to come back on Monday night, but don't expect a lot of scripted material just yet as SAG-AFTRA still has an ongoing strike. (CNN)
  • It seems that Saturday Night Live might be able to return before the SAG-AFTRA strike is over, as that strike does not affect the show, but nothing official has been said. (Deadline)
  • ABC has cancelled Home Economics, a series that was previously on the bubble. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • Byron Allen made a $10 billion offer to buy ABC (and a few other things) from Disney, but despite that talk, it seems that Disney just isn't interested, yet, but that doesn't mean a sale is off the table. (Deadline)
  • Would you like more Deal or No Deal? What if it were on an island and hosted by Joe Manganiello? (Entertainment Weekly)
  • We have said over and over again that DVDs offer permanence that streaming doesn't offer, and this week, we have learned that Hulu is pulling a number of series from the service effective today, including Ally McBeal, The Practice, Hill Street Blues, The Bob Newhart Show, Better Off Ted, and Arrested Development. (Deadline)
  • However, Hulu is adding Moonlighting soon. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (SEPTEMBER 30 - OCTOBER 6)

  • Catchy Comedy has a binge of The Abbott and Costello Show this weekend.
  • All of your favorite Fox animated hits return on Sunday night, including The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Bob's Burgers.
  • Magnum, PI and Quantum Leap return for new seasons on Thursday night, with Magnum, PI making the move from CBS to NBC for the new season.

Moonlighting Coming to Hulu; Showtime Announces Date for The Curse

Moonlighting

An '80s classic is coming to Hulu on October 10. For the very first time, all 67 episodes of Moonlighting, starring Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis, will be available to stream, complete with the original Grammy-nominated title track recording by Al Jarreau. Each classic episode has been remastered in HD from the original film source. When former fashion model Maddie Hayes goes broke and finds that one of her few remaining assets is ownership of the Blue Moon Detective Agency, she's tempted to liquidate it until she meets the quirky employees and gets involved in their even quirkier cases. The series starred Cybill Shepherd, Bruce Willis, Allyce Beasley, and Curtis Armstrong.

The Curse

Showtime announced that its highly anticipated series The Curse will premiere on streaming and on demand for all Showtime and Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers on Friday, November 10, before making its on-air debut on Showtime on Sunday, November 12, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Showtime also has unveiled an expanded look at images from the series, which will have its world premiere at the 2023 New York Film Festival on Thursday, October 12, screening the first three episodes. The Curse is a genre-bending series that explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring in their new home-improvement show. The series stars Emma Stone (La La Land), Nathan Fielder (The Rehearsal) and Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer). Guest stars include Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi, Emmy nominee Corbin Bernsen, and Constance Shulman.
