Week 11 TV Ratings and Analysis; How the Sitcoms Did

2010-11 Week 11 TV Ratings (first four nights averages, Mon-Thu):

Households: N/A
Total Viewers: N/A
Adults 18-49: N/A

Week 11 (Nov. 29-Dec. 5) Analysis: Week 11 is the first full week for post-November sweeps, and we see a lot of repeats but still some originals mixed in. We don't have final first four nights averages but we do final program ratings for the first four nights. We can project through the first four days, CBS probably has the lead in all categories, as NBC and ABC are likely battling for second in HH/viewers. Fox is likely fourth in HH/viewers. Among 18-49, Fox is probably second, with NBC up to third and ABC probably fourth due to only Thursday being regular. This could change like usual after tonight, due to a NFL overrun on Fox for the second straight week. Last week, week 10, had CBS take first in HH/viewers but they were tied for third in 18-49. Fox took home the 18-49 crown, but was third in HH/viewers. ABC was second in all categories, while NBC was fourth in HH/viewers but tied with CBS for third in 18-49.

Monday was slow with repeats and no Dancing. ABC had its first Monday without Dancing with the Stars as the second episode of Skating with the Stars didn't do so hot with 6.06 million but a terrible 1.2 18-49 rating. That isn't good, but luckily this is just a series for December. Next Castle was preempted (it is all-new tomorrow!), but from 9:30-11pm ABC aired the special CMA Country Christmas and did 7.3 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, not too good but built from the lead-in. CBS was in repeats with its comedies and Hawaii Five-0. At 8pm, a repeat of How I Met Your Mother started it off with 8.03 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, not bad for a repeat. At 8:30, a repeat of Rules of Engagement did 7.47 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, also not too shabby for a repeat. Two and a Half Men followed with a repeat doing 11.38 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, which is great for a repeat. At 9:30, Mike & Molly had its first repeat in the slot do 8.82 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, which was good but not as good as the other three comedies. A first repeat for Hawaii Five-0 in its slot did 7.85 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, which is OK. Fox started off with a repeat of House at 5.1 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, but a new Lie To Me did 6.38 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, up from previous week with limited competition. This is what I call Fool's Gold, but it proves this show could do well in less pressure. NBC followed with a new Chuck doing 6.16 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, up from previous week's season lows. At 9pm, The Event had its fall finale and did just 5.83 million and just a 1.9 18-49 rating, up some from previous week. Then at 10pm, Chase did 6.03 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, also up some from previous week. Once again Fool's Gold for all three. Chuck did the best increases from previous week on a limited night. The CW was next with an all-new 90210 doing 2.01 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating and a new Gossip Girl doing 1.96 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating. Up some from usual, but still a long way to go.

Tuesday had Fox and CBS battle. Starting with CBS, they had the annual classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer opening the night off with 12.2 million and a 3.9 18-49 rating, up some from last year and that 18-49 rating is the same as a new NCIS from previous week. At 9pm, NCIS: Los Angeles was preempted as CBS aired a repeat of NCIS on a special time doing 15.05 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, which is similar to a new NCIS: LA from the previous week...wow. And finally CBS aired preempted The Good Wife and aired the annual special Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and did 8.96 million and a great 3.4 18-49 rating, for best showing in the slot in 18-49 all season. The special was up from last season as well. ABC started off with two animated holiday specials. The classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas did a solid 6.91 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, but down from last season. Then the new classic Shrek the Halls did better with 7.39 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, also off from last season. These specials will be repeated again later in the month, so they could do similar ratings. At 9pm, No Ordinary Family was new at a special extraordinary time doing 6.23 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, a tenth from previous week in 18-49 but down down in viewers. At 10, Detroit 1-8-7 was all-new and did 7.29 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, not too much down from usual despite no Dancing Results, but could be better. Fox had a new Glee doing 11.68 million and a 4.6 18-49 rating, up from previous week's season low. Next Raising Hope did 6.55 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, up some from previous week. A burn-off episode of Running Wilde followed with 3.36 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, which is lower than previous week's Raising Hope repeat. That should tell you it won't be back at all next season. NBC started off well with the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting doing 11.26 million but only a 1.9 18-49 rating. The special usually airs on Wednesdays, but not this season. The Biggest Loser was next at a special time from 9-11pm doing 8.31 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, up a lot from previous week with limited competition. NBC's Parenthood was preempted. The CW was all-new for the second straight night as One Tree Hill did only 1.81 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, followed by an even worse Life UneXpected 1.52 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating.

Wednesday it was a slow night. CBS started the night off with Survivor: Nicaragua at 12.26 million and a 3.6 18-49 rating, on par with this season's ratings. Veteran drama Criminal Minds was next but CBS aired a repeat and did 9.09 million and a 2.2 A18-49 rating, similar to the previous week's repeat. At 10pm, The Defenders was preempted so CBS aired the Grammy Nominations Concert and did only 5.01 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating. ABC was in repeats with its Laugh On comedy block and did decent with The Middle doing 6.56 million and 1.9 18-49 rating. Better With You was next with its first repeat in the slot doing 5.26 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, not bad. Modern Family was a repeat at 9pm and did 6.94 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, which is good for a repeat. Cougar Town was a repeat as well and did 4.37 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, the lowest of the sitcoms, but this sitcom doesn't repeat as well. At 10pm, ABC aired a burn-off episode of The Whole Truth and did just 3.65 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, not good at all. Let's see how it does with new episodes of comedies following it this week, with guest star Harold Perrineau. NBC aired a new episode of the recently canceled Undercovers with 4.82 million and 1.3 18-49 rating, also not good at all. Then a new Law & Order: SVU was next with limited competition so it did 9.22 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, which is up but should have been better. At 10, a new Law & Order: Los Angeles did 9.15 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, best of the hour but considering the competition, could be better. Fox started off with a new episode of Human Target at 5.78 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, up some from previous week. Hell's Kitchen aired at 9 and did 5.83 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, up some from previous week. The CW had the Top Model season finale and did 3.36 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, which is up but still not as good as it should be. A new Hellcats followed with only 1.89 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating, as looks like the better lead-in didn't help much.

Thursday it was ABC on top with CBS in repeats. ABC opened the night with the classic special Santa Clause is Comin' To Town doing 7.36 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, which is off some from last year. Then Grey's Anatomy was all-new and did a solid 11.02 million and a 4.0 18-49 rating, off some from its previous episode. At 10pm, Private Practice was new and did a solid 7.9 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating, on par with its previous episode two weeks ago. CBS opened with a repeat of The Big Bang Theory at 8.9 million and a 2.4 A18-49 rating. Not bad for a repeat. Then a repeat of $#*! My Dad Says followed with 7.49 million and 1.9 18-49 rating, also not bad. Next, CSI was a repeat and did 9.76 million but only a 1.8 18-49 rating. A repeat of The Mentalist did 9.39 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which is lower than normal it seems. Fox aired a new Bones and did solid with 8.83 million but a could-be-better 2.3 18-49 rating. At 9pm Fringe was new and did only 5.13 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, only tying a CSI repeat. NBC was still in the familiar fourth as Community did 4.55 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, then 30 Rock did 5.03 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating. At 9pm The Office did 7.31 million and a 3.7 18-49 rating, which is good. Outsourced followed with 5.32 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, which is OK. At 10, The Apprentice closed the night with only 4.12 million and a 1.4 18-49, not good. The CW was next with new episodes of Vampire Diaries doing 3.46 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating followed by Nikita at 2.3 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating, which should be better..

Now, final numbers for Friday and Saturday are not available, but CBS nipped by ABC in 18-49 with its dramas. ABC's 20/20 was the number one show of the night with a prelim 1.9 18-49 rating.
Saturday numbers had ABC's Saturday Night College Football coverage win the night with the Big 12 Championship Game, everything else was low with repeats.

Tonight ABC Sunday is back with all-new episodes AFV, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Desperate Housewives, and Brothers & Sisters for the next two weeks. NBC has the Steelers/Raven NFL game that should focus on defense more than offense. CBS has its normal Sunday line-up of 60 Minutes/Amazing Race/Undercover Boss/SI: Miami. Fox's animation block is new from 8-10pm, (except Family Guy is preempted for a Cleveland Show one-hour episode) following an NFL overrun for the second straight week. NBC will win the night, thanks to NFL being a factor, Fox will be second thanks to an NFL overrun, with ABC and CBS following. All four nets will be a factor.

As for the week (week 11), since Fox has the overrun tonight, they should win the week in 18-49 over CBS. CBS should remain supreme in total viewers, with second place up for grabs--could be NC, ABC or Fox. As for 18-49, it's anyone's game again but Fox should take it with second place up for grabs. And for the coming week (week 12), we have more repeats, specials and some new showings of course. Specials include A Charlie Brown Christmas with a new Prep & Landing short inside the hour on ABC Tuesday.

Week 11 How the Sitcoms Did

Last Sunday Sitcoms (counts for week 10 -- Nov. 22-28)

  • The Simpsons (Fox) - An all-new episode at 8pm did 9.39 million and a 4.1 18-49 rating, which is sharply up week-to-week as it had a direct NFL lead-in. Almost up 3 million and 1.2 18-49 points from previous week. NFL is a difference maker.
  • The Cleveland Show (Fox) - A new episode at 8:30pm did 7.39 million and a 3.4 18-49 rating...sharply up from previous week. Fox having the late afternoon Sunday game helps deeply for primetime, just like it does for CBS when they have it.
  • Family Guy (Fox) - A repeat did 6.45 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, down just a bit from previous week, which was NEW.
  • American Dad! (Fox) - A new episode did 6.13 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, up sharply week-to-week.

Monday Sitcoms

  • How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - A repeat did 8.03 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, not bad at all for a repeat. In fact total viewers, was only down less than a million from a new episode from the week prior.
  • Rules of Engagement (CBS) - 7.47 million for a repeat and a 2.2 18-49 rating. Also, not bad!
  • Two and a Half Men (CBS) - 11.38 million for a repeat and a 3.0 18-49 rating is good, but not as close to its original numbers as the two lead-ins.
  • Mike & Molly (CBS) - 8.82 million for a repeat and a 18-49 rating of 2.3 is not bad for a repeat.

Tuesday Sitcoms

  • Raising Hope (Fox) - The new sitcom was new at 9pm with 6.65 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, both up some from previous week. Another improved showing, but the competition wasn't harsh. Still waiting for that 3.0 rating.
  • Running Wilde (Fox) - A burn-off episode only did 3.36 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating for the loser of the week for sitcoms.

Wednesday Sitcoms
  • The Middle (ABC) - ABC Laugh on Wednesday was in repeats. A repeat did 6.56 million and 1.9 18-49 rating, decent.
  • Better with You (ABC) - Its first repeat in the slot did 5.26 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, which is acceptable for a repeat.
  • Modern Family (ABC) - A repeat did a prelim 6.94 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, which is decent.
  • Cougar Town (ABC) - A repeat did 4.37 million and 1.5 18-49 rating, the lowest of the repeats.

Thursday Sitcoms

  • The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A repeat at 8pm slot did a 8.9 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, not to shabby for a repeat.
  • S#*! My Dad Says (CBS) - A repeat did 7.49 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating.
  • Community (NBC) - A new episode only mustered 4.55 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating with limited competition.
  • 30 Rock (NBC) - A new showing did 5.03 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, which could be better.
  • The Office (NBC) - The standout of the night for NBC of course with 7.31 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating.
  • Outsourced (NBC) - A new episode only did 5.32 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating. This show will do bad I think when it moves to 10:30.

Friday Sitcoms

  • None.

Saturday Sitcoms

  • None.

Airing tonight (Sunday) are Fox's animated comedies from 8-10 after NFL action.

Summing it up. Two and a Half Men (R), The Office, The Big Bang Theory (R), How I Met Your Mother (R), Modern Family (R) were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as The Middle (R), 30 Rock) or just plain old terrible (such as Running Wilde, Community).
