SitcomsOnline Digest: Roseanne Spinoff One Step Closer to Reality; Netflix to Air New Season of Lucifer

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! Roseanne is stealing the spotlight again this week, as it looks like a spinoff of the series may actually be close to becoming a reality. We're also hearing some rumblings about daytime television, including a temporary (and potentially permanent) production halt to a long-time staple of daytime trash talk shows. Let's get going!

  • A Roseanne spinoff is getting one step closer to reality now, as a deal appears to be in the works in which Roseanne Barr will sign an agreement to let the show go on without receiving on-going residuals. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • It seems that Roseanne Barr's name was submitted for an Emmy Award in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series just before the controversy broke out. (Deadline)

  • Are we finally reaching the end of the trash TV talk show era? Perhaps, as it was announced this week that The Jerry Springer Show will halt production for at least next season (potentially for good) after a nearly three decade run, and only air in reruns on The CW. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • Streaming services have often come to rescue canceled network series, and this week, Netflix rescued Fox's Lucifer. (Deadline)
  • Although the show itself will continue to air for a few more months, The Chew said farewell to fans on Friday with the last taped episode of the series. (People)
  • There was speculation that WGN America was trying to get out of the scripted television business in the lead up to a potential merger of parent company Tribune with Sinclair (which has yet to happen), but this week, two new original series were announced for the cable network. (SitcomsOnline)

    Jessica and Louis are thrilled beyond belief when they discover that a Chinese family – Elaine (Ming-Na Wen), Julius (Reggie Lee) and son, Horace (Jimmy O. Yang) – have moved into the neighborhood. Jessica immediately bonds with Elaine, who helps her solve an issue with the HOA, and Louis decides to introduce Julius to Marvin and hang out together. Meanwhile, when Evan goes door-to-door collecting information for the census bureau, Eddie and Emery come up with a plan to impersonate being census takers in order to find out when the owners of a pool are out of the house so they can sneak over and use it.

    Speechless - "C-E-- CELEBRITY S-U-- SUITE" (ABC, 8:30PM ET/PT)
    When the DiMeos land in the hospital on Thanksgiving, Maya’s determination to save the holiday leads to an uneasy truce with her rival, Melanie Hertzal (Sarah Chalke); and Jimmy gets jealous when Kenneth bonds with his brother, Billy (Rob Corddry). Meanwhile, wounds from an old breakup are re-opened, but Ray finds brand-new love in an unlikely place.

    Mandy struggles with rejection as a fashion designer; Vanessa feels regret about her career path.

    Andi, Bowie and Bex are surprised by an impromptu visit by Bowie's mother; while hanging out with T.J.'s friends, Cyrus faces a dangerous situation; Buffy and Jonah learn a secret about their school principal.

    Jenna warns Coop and Cami they have to start taking better care of their little brother, Ollie, or he won't be able to be their test pilot on the show anymore; the duo tries to step up, but winds up losing Ollie at the mall.

    Booker and Nia are excited to be named student ambassadors of their school, until they learn that their first job is to welcome Mitch as a new student.
