Gloria Estefan Joins One Day at a Time; Netflix Gets Serious with Comedy Stars
This is it! Gloria Estefan is (finally!) coming to Netflix's One Day at a Time. Get on your feet for Gloria Estefan! Netflix announced Monday that the Grammy Award-winning performer will guest-star in an episode of One Day at a Time's much-anticipated third season. Estefan -- who is also the voice behind the series' theme song, a Cuban-tinged cover of the original comedy's opener -- will play Mirtha, Lydia's (Rita Moreno) baby sister and arch-nemesis. A reimagining of the iconic Norman Lear's classic sitcom, One Day at a Time is an hilarious and heartfelt comedy that follows three generations of a Cuban-American family navigating the ups and downs of life. A newly-single mom and military veteran journeys through the triumphs and tribulations that come with raising two strong-willed, mega-millennial children, all the while enlisting the "help" of her old-school mother and her building manager-turned-invaluable confidant. Through an contemporary lens, One Day at a Time offers a glimpse at what life looks like, in good times and bad -- and how those around you somehow make it all worthwhile.
One Day at a Time stars Justina Machado, Rita Moreno, Stephen Tobolowsky, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez and Marcel Ruiz. Norman Lear executive produces, with Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce executive producing and co-showrunning. Brent Miller also executive-produces. One Day at a Time is produced by Sony Television Productions for Netflix.
Three stars known for comedies are about to get serious for a serious topic. Toni Collette (United States of Tara), Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie) and Kaitlyn Dever (Last Man Standing) have been cast in Unbelievable, a limited series based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning article by The Marshall Project and ProPublica, An Unbelievable Story of Rape. Collette and Wever will play detectives whose lives become intertwined in their mutual pursuit of a possible serial rapist. Lisa Cholodenko is set to direct the first three episodes. Eight total episodes have been ordered of this limited series. The series tells the true story of Marie, a teenager who was charged with lying about having been raped, and the two female detectives who followed a twisting path to arrive at the truth. Katie Couric is among the producers.
