SitcomsOnline Digest: ABC Limiting Next Day Online Streaming; More Newhart on DVD
- If you enjoy watching your favorite ABC series the next day online, it could be coming to an end for you, depending upon your circumstances. The network announced that they will restrict next-day streaming of series to subscribers of a list of specific cable companies (which includes Comcast, but leaves large holes by not include DISH Network, DirecTV, or Time Warner Cable) and subscribers of Hulu+. This follows a similar move made by Fox in 2011, but for now, CBS and NBC continue to offer this programming for free to everybody. (TVLine)
- Chevy Chase left the series Community at the end of the fourth season, and it appeared that there was no way that he could possibly return... but he did (at least temporarily). Dan Harmon discusses the hurdles that he had to go through to make this happen with TV Guide. (TV Guide)
- If you're wondering when your favorite mid-season series will return (or debut), Deadline has a rather thorough rundown of debut dates for several series through March. (Deadline)
- Netflix has plenty of categories for every type of television that anybody may possible want to see... 76,897, to be exact. As it turns out, the most popular actor in these categories is Raymond Burr, best known for his role as Perry Mason and Ironside. (Deadline)
- We lost quite a few sitcom stars in 2013. Earlier this week, we compiled a 2013 tribute to some of these people. (SitcomsOnline)

Remembering James Avery of Fresh Prince; Episodic Review: Community - "Repilot" & "Introduction to Teaching" Airing Tonight on NBC
Yesterday we first mentioned to you on Twitter of the passing of sitcom star James Avery and now today we will pay tribute to him. James Avery, who laid down the law at home and on the job as the Honorable Philip Banks in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has died. His publicist, Cynthia Snyder confirmed that Avery died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2013) in Glendale, CA, following complications from open heart surgery. Alfonso Ribeiro confirmed the passing on Twitter as well. Avery, who stood more than 6 feet tall, played the family patriarch and a wealthy attorney and judge on the popular TV comedy that launched the acting career of Will Smith as Banks' trouble-making nephew. The sitcom, which aired on NBC from 1990 to 1996, was set in the Banks' mansion, where Smith's character was sent from Philadelphia when things got tough in his own neighborhood. Fans came to know the imposing Banks as "Uncle Phil." There was a brief reunion in late 2011 where the cast reunited at a charity luncheon (see Will Smith's photo).
Avery liked to say that the way to be an actor was to act, and he had a busy and diverse career before, during and after Fresh Prince. His TV credits included MANY TV guest stints on Grey's Anatomy, Harry's Law, Sherri, Eli Stone, The Closer, All of Us, That's So Raven, Girlfriends, My Wife & Kids, NYPD Blue, Charmed, That '70s Show, All About the Andersons, Soul Food, Crossing Jordan, Reba, The Division, Judging Amy, Dharma & Greg, The Jamie Foxx, Two Guys and a Girl, CSI, Sparks, In the House, Roc, LA Law, Amen, A Different World, The Hogan Family, 227, Webster, The Jeffersons, Hill Street Blues and Dallas, and among his many films were Fletch, Nightflyers and 8 Million Ways to Die. His voice alone brought him many jobs, notably as Shredder in the animated '80s and '90s TV series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
According to Snyder, he will be seen in the film Wish I Was Here, directed by Zach Braff and scheduled to premiere later this month at the Sundance festival. He was recently seen on two TV movies that aired on Lifetime: Hunt for the Labyrinth Killer and Call Me Crazy: A Five Film. Avery grew up in Atlantic City, N.J., and served in the Navy in Vietnam in the late 1960s. After returning to the states, he settled in California and studied drama and literature at the University of California at San Diego. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and stepson Kevin Waters. As of now, no on-air tributes or marathons of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air are scheduled, but if and when they are, we will be the first to let you know, so stay with us. Mr. Avery was only 68 (or 65 according to some sources).
On the next...Community (NBC, Thur 8:00pm):

NBC's ensemble comedy lead by Joel McHales returns tonight for its season premiere and airs Thursdays at 8:00pm and we have just watched the two episodes that air tonight (Jan. 2). In the first episode airing tonight, "Repilot," Jeff (Joel McHale) returns to Greendale to help his former law partner gather evidence for a lawsuit, thinking Jeff is planning to help save the school, Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) calls the study group back together. In the second episode airing tonight (8:30pm), "Introduction to Teaching," Professor Hickey (guest Jonathan Banks) helps Jeff (Joel McHale) settle into his new job at Greendale, while Abed (Danny Pudi) convinces the study group to take a class focused on Nicolas Cage.
I'm not sure I've ever been as relieved at a television show as I was when I watched the first two episodes of Community's fifth season. After a turmulous string of events that included the firing of series creator Dan Harmon and the departure of cast member Chevy Chase, the show returned last season a far weaker show than it had been in the past. Other than a select few episodes, the fourth season felt like the show desperately trying to recapture the magic it had under Harmon's run and falling flat on its face. In a surprising turn of events, Harmon was re-hired as showrunner for the shows' 5th season, perhaps because of rallying cries from both the fans and the cast members. But was it too late? Had the damage already been done? If the first two episodes of the season are any indication, then the answer is a confident "no". Community's fifth season feels refreshingly like the show of the old, delivering the big laughs and cutting depth that made us fall in love with it in the first place.
There are lots of interesting things to discuss with these two episodes, but what I found most compelling was the way Community managed to incorporate the feelings of change and uneasiness that viewers have felt with it over the past few years into the show itself. The show has always been aware of how its viewers perceive it, and it uses that awareness to its benefit. That's never been more apparent than in these early Season 5 episodes, which serve as a relaunch for both its viewers and its characters. Significant time has passed in the shows' universe since we last visited (seemingly over a year), and in that time, the study group has graduated and gone their separate ways. This allows the viewers' reunion with the characters to also serve as the characters' reunion with each other, and it allows both the viewers and characters to adjust to the idea of a "repilot" at the same time. This makes it much easier for us to approach some of the more significant dynamic changes that have occurred in the show this year, from the reasons that all of the characters have chosen to re-enroll at Greendale, to Jeff's new teaching position, to new character Professor Nichols (a kind of/sort of Pierce replacement played brilliantly by Jonathan Banks). This realized sense of relaunch, combined with the refreshed dynamics of the show, make the fifth season feel like almost an entirely new show at points. And yet, it still feels far more like Community than anything that aired last year. A-

2014 SITCOMS ON DVD PREVIEW
January 2014:
01/07 - Barney Miller - The Complete Fourth Season
Shout! Factory released the Complete Series (read our review) back on October 25, 2011. They are now continuing with the individual season releases. The 3-disc set runs contains 23 episodes and runs approximately 555 minutes. It has a SRP of $24.97. Season four featured the final regular episodes of Abe Vigoda until he returned for one episode in the seventh season.
Airing on ABC primetime from 1974-1982 and seen by millions, Barney Miller is a situation comedy television series set in a NYC police station in Greenwich Village. Captain Barney Miller (Hal Linden) is the kind of cop we'd all like to meet. He somehow manages to maintain order over a group of inner-city detectives who gamble for a hobby, get hit on by anything in skirts, go to renaissance philosophy conventions for fun, and would really prefer to be writing. These colorful characters worked together to make one of the funniest sitcoms ever and is cemented in classic TV status.
01/14 - The Courtship of Eddie's Father - The Complete Third Season
The Warner Archive Collection releases the third and final season as a manufactured-on-demand (MOD) release. The set has a SRP of $34.95. It contains the final 23 episodes of the series and has a running time of approximately 586 minutes.
The third and final season of the beloved TV classic brings with it some new faces (comedy greats Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller in a series of roles), new fears (Summer camp! Karate! Fetching Soviets!) and new foes (Eight is Enough's Willie Aames taking up the "best frenemy" role previously enjoyed by Jodie Foster). But the show still delivers its sitcom-changing mix of maturity, tenderness and laughs thanks to the evident bond enjoyed by series stars Bill Bixby and Brandon Cruz and the comedic support from series creator James Komack and series regular Kristina Holland as Norman Tinker and Tina Rickles.
Adding to the razzmatazz is one very special guest-star, Sammy Davis Jr. as Ronnie Rivers Jr. a phobia-filled insurance adjuster. Other guests include Carol Lawrence (the aforementioned sexy Soviet), All in the Family's Sally Struthers, Alice's Vic Tayback, Columbo's Bruce Kirby and One Day at a Time's Pat Harrington Jr.
01/14 - Hazel - The Complete Fifth and Final Season
Shout! Factory releases the Fifth and Final Season of Hazel. The 4-disc set contains the final 29 episodes of the season and runs approximately 720 minutes. it has a SRP of $34.93. The final season saw a change in format. Don DeFore and Whitney Blake left the series. Ray Fulmer, Lynn Borden and Julia Benjamin joined the cast.
Oscar®- and Emmy® Award-winner Shirley Booth is back and ready to whip a whole new family into shape in the fifth and final season of the classic sitcom.
After George is transferred to the Middle East and takes Dorothy along, Hazel and Harold move in with George's brother, his wife Barbara and their daughter Susie. It’s not long before Barbara and Hazel butt heads after Hazel demonstrates her ability to take over the household as an efficient maid.
The incomparable Shirley Booth stars as TV’s original wisecracking maid, with Ray Fulmer (The Rogues), Lynn Borden (Frogs), Bobby Buntrock (The Virginian) and Julia Benjamin (The Rockford Files) as the family in her care.
01/14 - The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis - Season Two
Shout! Factory released the Complete Series (read our review) on July 2, 2013. Season Two will arrive individually on a 5-disc set that contains 36 episodes and runs approximately 865 minutes. It has a SRP of $29.93.

When the Huxtables hit the airwaves for the first time in 1984, they created an instant sensation that rejuvenated and changed prime-time television forever. From their brownstone in Brooklyn, Cliff and Clair Huxtable watched over their family with style, wit and wisdom, not to mention a whole lot of laughs. The values they represented clearly struck a nerve with the public as the show was an instant success - never out of the top 20 in the ratings, and one of only two shows to hold TV's #1 spot for five years in a row.

Tackling topical, sometimes even controversial, subject matter with wit and sensitivity, Good Times was a breakthrough series in many ways. Now you can revive your inner jive with this "Dyn-O-Mite" 3 DVD collection!

And "Uncle Teddy" (Dennis Larson) is sure to demand "the proper respect" from his five-day-older nephew, Jake (Kirby Furlong). It's a good thing Jim has a Nobel Prize-winning best friend, chemistry professor Dr. Luther Quince (John McGiver) to help make sense of the chaos, especially after a house fire forces Peter's family to move in with Jim's!

2014 Wish List:
This is my wish list for 2014. Some of them probably have slim to no chance of ever being available, but I still have hope for them someday. None of these titles have been officially announced.
According to Jim - Seasons 3-5 were released in 2011. Could we see the final 3 seasons released in 2014? It has been stalled it seems.
The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet - A fundraising project by Sam Nelson to get the show restored and complete on DVD raised over $32,000.
Alice - The third and fourth seasons were released in 2013. Hopefully there is more to come in 2014.
Archie Bunker's Place - A complete series boxed set would be nice to go along with All in the Family - The Complete Series.
Baby Daddy - This series is still not out on DVD. It is very popular on ABC Family and hopefully we get its first season in 2014.
Becker - The fifth season was released in July. Only one season is left to finish the series.
Benson - Season Two was in 2012. Hopefully more seasons will be available in the future.
Blossom - I'm surprised that it hasn't been available as a Shout! Factory Select title like Mr. Belvedere. Seasons 1-2 were released way back in January 2009. Mill Creek released a "best of" set in October 2010.
The Bob Newhart Show - We are still patiently waiting for the fifth and sixth seasons to be released. There have been many talks in the past, but nothing has been announced yet. RIP Marcia Wallace.
Brooklyn Bridge - There were rumors of a release in 2010 by the show's creator Gary David Goldberg (RIP), but it never materialized.
California Dreams - Only Season 5 remains to be released.
Coach - Season 4 was released in March 2011. Maybe we will see another season this year.
Dave's World - Only Seson 4 is left to complete the series.
Diff'rent Strokes - Shout! Factory released the third and fourth seasons in 2012. Hopefully they will release more seasons at some point. RIP Conrad Bain.
8 Simple Rules - We are still waiting for the third and final season.
Eight Is Enough - The third and four seasons were released in 2013. Only the fifth season is left to complete the series.
The Facts of Life - Mill Creek is re-releasing the first season. No ne seasons have been released since 2010.
Fish - Shout! Factory included the first season in the Barney Miller - The Complete Series release. It would be great to see the second season as well.
George Lopez - The third season was released in July. More seasons are needed. Sheow!
Growing Pains - The third season was released in May. One season a year would be fine.
Happy Days - It has been a long wait for the fifth season. Laverne & Shirley has continued to be released. Even Joanie Loves Chachi is getting a release, but where is Happy Days?
The Hogan Family - Music clearance issues seem to be the reason for no DVD releases at this point.
Hope & Faith - Season 1 was released several years ago, but we are still waiting on Seasons 2-3 from Lionsgate.
I'm Dickens...He's Fenster - We're still waiting for the second volume of this lost gem.
It's Your Move - It would make an ideal 3-disc set from Shout! Factory. A cult classic that would be a popular release.
Last Man Standing - We're into season three and still no DVD releases for this show at all. Very strange.
Laverne & Shirley - Only the eighth season is left to be released. If the recent release pattern holds, it will be available in 2015.
Less Than Perfect - Season 1 was released in September 2010. Hopefully this underrated series will have more seasons available at some point.
Mad About You - Seasons 6-7 are still needed to complete the series.
Mr. Belvedere - We're just waiting on Seasons 5-6 to complete the series.
Mister Ed - Season 5 was released as a Shout! Select title in 2011. Only Season 6 remains to complete the series.
Mork & Mindy - Mork calling CBS DVD... come in CBS DVD... We only need the fourth season to complete the series. RIP Jonathan Winters.
My Three Sons - Only Seasons 1-2 have been released. Unfortunately, many CBS DVD/Paramount series have been stalled for years.
My Two Dads - Only the third season remains to be released to complete the series.
My Wife and Kids - Only Seasons 1-2 have been released.
Out of This World - Volume 1 was released in Germany in November 2011. Will we see a U.S. release at some point?
Parker Lewis Can't Lose - Seasons 1 and 2 have been released. We're just waiting on the third season to complete the series.
Perfect Strangers - We're still waiting for the third season. We desperately need more Balki!
The Phil Silvers Show/Sgt. Bilko - It's another stalled CBS DVD/Paramount series.
Please Don't Eat the Daisies - As we reported in October 2012, Warner Archive hopes to bring it to DVD once some music issues are cleared and the episodes are remastered.
Rhoda - There were three seasons released in 2010. It's frustrating to be missing only one season to complete the series.
Silver Spoons - It would make a great Shout! Factory Select title.
Small Wonder - Seasons 1-2 have been released. Seasons 3-4 are still needed to complete the series.
Welcome Back, Kotter - It has been a long wait to see more of the Sweathogs.
Webster - Only the fifth and sixth seasons are left to complete the series. RIP Henry Polic II.
The Wonder Years - The first season had only six episodes. It could be given a trial run. Music licensing rights are a major issue, but hopefully a company like Shout! Factory could work on this set. It has been the #1 most requested unreleased show at TVShowsonDVD.com by a wide margin for many years.
