SitcomsOnline Digest: Fox Producing Retirement Home Comedy Starring Vicki Lawrence and David Alan Grier; Nashville and Still the King Cancelled
HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
- Fox is producing (with the help of the same people behind It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) a new retirement home comedy with an all-star cast that includes Vicki Lawrence and David Alan Grier. (Variety)
- We hate having to bring new updates on what sexual harassment scandals may be affecting various shows every week, but now, with allegations against Jeffrey Tambor, it seems that the creator of the Amazon Prime series Transparent is considering options to continue that series without Tambor's character. (Variety)
- Yet another casualty of the sexual harassment scandals is the upcoming (or maybe not) TBS animated series, The Cops, which was set to star Louis C.K., as the series laid off the animators this week while the network tries to figure out how or even if the program can ever make it to air. (Deadline)
- Jenji Kohan, who created Weeds for Showtime before going on to create a pair of hits (Orange is the New Black and GLOW) for Netflix, has signed a deal to do even more work for the streaming service. (Deadline)
- CMT has cancelled two series: Nashville (although the final season, which hasn't aired yet, will still be starting in January) and Still the King. (Broadcasting and Cable)
- Last week, we were talking about Disney buying the assets of 21st Century Fox, but this week, it seems that Comcast (and others) are eyeing Rupert Murdoch's assets "like a fox" as well. (Deadline)
- NBCUniversal has been rather aggressive in killing off their digital cable networks in the past year or so, with Cloo and Esquire both being taken off the air, and the next casualty will be the horror themed network Chiller. (Deadline)
- While most networks are reducing the number of syndicated classic TV series that they air and airing them for several hours in a row everyday day, Antenna TV is taking a decisively different approach by giving viewers a lot more variety with their new additions that are coming in January, which includes some series that we've known were coming as well as some surprises like Coach and Gimme a Break.
