Remembering Garry Shandling, Antenna TV to Air His First Appearance on Johnny Carson Tonight; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of March 28, 2016)

Garry Shandling

Actor and comedian Garry Shandling, who starred in It's Garry Shandling's Show and The Larry Sanders Show, has died. He died on March 24. He suddenly collapsed at his home and was rushed to the hospital, suffering from an apparent medical emergency. No cause of death has been announced. Mr. Shandling was 66.

Shandling's career in Hollywood began as a sitcom writer. He wrote four episodes of Sanford and Son in 1975-1976, one episode of Welcome Back, Kotter in 1976 and one episode of The Harvey Korman Show in 1978 where he also worked as a story editor for the series. He became a stand-up comedian because he was frustrated by situation comedy's "formulaic writing".

Shandling performed his first stand-up routine at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles in 1978. He made his first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on March 18, 1981. He guest hosted seven times in 1986-1987.

In 1984, he performed his first stand-up special, Garry Shandling: Alone in Vegas, for Showtime. A second special, The Garry Shandling Show: 25th Anniversary Special, aired on Showtime in 1986. His third special, Garry Shandling: Stand-Up, aired in 1991 as part of the HBO Comedy Hour.

It's Garry Shandling's Show

He created the sitcom It's Garry Shandling's Show with Alan Zweibel for Showtime in 1986. Fox began airing reruns of the series in 1988 not long after they aired on Showtime. Shandling also wrote 15 episodes of the series. It starred Barbara Cason, Molly Cheek, Michael Tucci, Bernadette Birkett, Scott Nemes and Paul Wilson. The show was notable for its frequent use of breaking the fourth wall to allow characters to speak directly to the audience. It also had the memorable "This is the Theme to Garry's Show" theme song, which was performed by Los Angeles musician Bill Lynch. The show was nominated for four Emmy Awards from 1986-1990.

The Larry Sanders Show

Shandling and Dennis Klein created his second sitcom, The Larry Sanders Show, for HBO in 1992. The successful series ran for 6 seasons and 89 episodes until 1998. It was set in the office and studio of a fictional late-night talk show called The Larry Sanders Show. The cast included Jeffrey Tambor, Rip Torn, Penny Johnson, Janeane Garofalo, Jeremy Piven, Wallace Langham and Mary Lynn Rajskub. Shandling was nominated for 18 Emmy Awards for the show and won the Primetime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series" in 1998, along with Peter Tolan, for writing the series finale, "Flip". Shandling wrote 38 episodes of the series, and directed three episodes in the final season.

He served as the host of the Emmys three times in 2000, 2003 (co-host) and 2004 and as host of the Grammys four times in 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994. Some of his television guest appearances included The Ben Stiller Show, Caroline in the City, The X-Files and My Adventures in Television.

His film credits included Love Affair, Mixed Nuts, Dr. Doolittle (voice), Hurlyburly, What Planet Are You From? (also producer and writer), Town & Country, Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The Archive of American Television conducted an extensive interview with him on June 9, 2011.

Mr. Shandling was brilliantly funny. He was wonderful in It's Garry Shandling's Show and The Larry Sanders Show. It's so nice the complete series are available on DVD. We thank him for the many laughs he brought us over the years. He will be greatly missed.

On the eve of Chinese New Year, Jessica pushes the entire family to settle all debts, disputes and grudges to ensure good fortune for the coming year. Unsure if she can contain her temper for the remainder of the day, Jessica enlists Emery to makes sure she keeps her cool. Meanwhile, Louis and Evan go on a wild goose chase to hunt down some hate mail, and Eddie is forced to entertain his super lame cousin.

Speechless - " S-I-- SICK D-A-- DAY" (ABC, 8:30PM ET/PT)
When Maya gets sick, Jimmy is forced to be the mom of the house, and Dylan becomes Kenneth’s replacement for JJ when Kenneth also gets sick. Jimmy ends up doing well with Maya’s normal duties, but he tries to keep it from her to avoid her feeling bad. Meanwhile, JJ protects Dylan from a boy she’s interested in. And despite its illness, the family bands together and pulls an all-nighter to finish Ray’s school project.

Modern Family - "Halloween 4: The Revenge of Rod Skyhook" (ABC, 9:00PM ET/PT) (Repeat)
Luke’s Halloween party isn’t the monster bash he dreamed of and is at risk of having the worst party of the year. Sensing trouble, the rest of the Dunphy’s realize all his party needs is a visit from Rod Skyhook, a little promotion and some adult supervision to get it started. Meanwhile at the Tucker-Pritchett home, Cam faces off with his Halloween nemesis while Lily and Mitchell try to save the day and work to keep him from going to the darkside. Finally, when Jay finds out that Manny is going to a party at the home of an old enemy, he enlists him to deliver a trick he will never forget.

Bow convinces a begrudging Dre to try therapy, and he learns how to cope with his anger issues. Meanwhile, Johan becomes a life coach to the kids.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - "Old Lady House: A Situation Comedy" (FXX, 10:00PM ET/PT)
Charlie thinks Mac's mom is holding his mom hostage so the gang installs spy cameras in their house to monitor what's going on. What they end up discovering is the moms are quite entertaining once Dennis makes some quick edits and adds a laugh track to the surveillance footage. Dee wants in on the new hit show and Frank becomes obsessed with banging Charlie's mom now that he's seen her on TV.

Man Seeking Woman - "Horse" (FXX, 10:30PM ET/PT)
Lucy attempts to forge a relationship with Josh's best friend Mike.

Schitt's Creek - "The Throuple" (Pop, 8:00PM ET/PT)
