Fri-Yay: American Auto Is Possible Worthy Successor to Superstore; Raven's Home Returns for 5th Season in March

by Vincent
A few weeks ago, I highlighted a series I was really enjoying a lot, Abbott Elementary. In my opinion, Abbott Elementary is easily the best new sitcom. But frankly, it's been a really good year for network sitcoms. And American Auto is another example of this seasons surprisingly great batch of new network comedies.
American Auto comes from Justin Spitzer, who was the showrunner of Superstore. It has a great cast, including Ana Gasteyer, a hilarious TV comedic veteran. And the joke writing is sharp, fresh and funny - and frankly, a bit more biting than many other network comedies of recent times. If you haven't checked it out yet, I highly recommend it. The ratings have been fairly low, unlike the solid breakouts of Abbott Elementary and Ghosts, and I'd love to see it continue to grow and evolve. In some bit of news, Tom Bergeron is guest starring on the show very soon - stay tuned!
Raven's Home, the long-running hit comedy series starring and executive produced by Raven-Symoné, will return for its fifth season on Friday, March 11, at 8:00 p.m. EST/PST on Disney Channel and DisneyNOW. A spinoff of the iconic Disney Channel comedy That's So Raven (2003-2007), Raven's Home follows the hilarious adventures driven by somewhat psychic Raven Baxter (Raven-Symoné) and her son Booker (Issac Ryan Brown), who has inherited his mom's gift to catch glimpses of the future. In season five of Raven's Home, Raven and Booker move back to San Francisco to help take care of her dad after a mild heart attack. Now Raven finds herself parenting her parent, raising her young cousin, and settling into life in her old hometown. Meanwhile, Booker is "the new kid" at Raven's old high school and has to keep his visions a secret from a new group of friends.
Joining the cast for season five are Rondell Sheridan, who reprises his role as Raven's easygoing and loveable dad, Victor, from That's So Raven; Mykal-Michelle Harris (ABC's mixed-ish) as Raven's young cousin, Alice; Felix Avitia (Disney's Gamers Guide to Pretty Much Everything) as Neil, Victor's neighbor and Booker's high school classmate; and musician and singer Emmy Liu-Wang (Andrean Players' Annie) as Ivy, a young neighbor who babysits Alice. Adrienne Bailon-Houghton (The Real), who portrayed Raven's arch-nemesis Alana in That's So Raven, will return in a recurring role as a grown-up version of the character, who is now the principal at Bayside High. Also joining in a recurring role is Marissa Reyes (Spirit Halloween) as Cami, a popular and ambitious girl with a rebellious streak.

Entertaining kids age 6-14 and their families, Raven's Home will continue to follow the hilarious adventures driven by somewhat psychic Raven Baxter and her son Booker, who has inherited his mom's gift to catch glimpses of the future. A spinoff of the iconic Disney Channel comedy That's So Raven (2003-2007), season five welcomes Rondell Sheridan to the cast, who reprises his role from the beloved classic as Raven's easygoing and loveable dad, Victor Baxter. Also joining the cast are Mykal-Michelle Harris (ABC's mixed-ish) as Raven's young cousin Alice; Felix Avitia (Disney's Gamers Guide to Pretty Much Everything) as Neil, Victor's neighbor and Booker's high school classmate; and musician and singer Emmy Liu-Wang (Broadway musical Annie) as Ivy, a young neighbor who babysits Alice.
The new season will also mark a reunion for the creative team as Emmy®-nominated writer/producer partners Scott Thomas and Jed Elinoff (Malibu Rescue, Disney's Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja), who developed the series, join Raven-Symoné as executive producers, along with Anthony C. Hill (Family Reunion, Raven's Home). Production will resume this fall.
Freeform has ordered the half-hour comedy series Everything's Trash from executive producer and writer Phoebe Robinson (2 Dope Queens, Portlandia) and Jonathan Groff (black-ish, Happy Endings). The series is produced by ABC Signature. Robinson's production company, Tiny Reparations, led by Jose Acevedo, will serve as nonwriting executive producer. Co-executive producer Chioke Nassor will direct. Starring Robinson and inspired by her bestselling book Everything's Trash, But It's Okay, the series follows Phoebe, a 30-something podcast star navigating her messy life. Forced to grow up when her older brother Jayden emerges as a leading political candidate, she relies on her friends and close-knit family to help her figure out adulthood.
The series also stars Jordan Carlos (First Wives Club) as Jayden, Phoebe's extremely intelligent, Blerd-y older brother with big dreams for his community, who has recently emerged as a leading political candidate. Toccarra Cash (Station 19, Younger) will portray Malika, Phoebe's savvy, smart and beautiful "code-switch queen" podcast producer. As Phoebe's work wife and ride-or-die friend, Malika tries to balance wanting Phoebe to grow up with encouraging her to be messy because, hey, the mess pays the bills and is funny AF. Nneka Okafor (God Friended Me) will portray Jessie, Phoebe's sister-in-law, who's a former socialite-turned-feminist and college professor. Jessie worries that she is the only one in her in-laws' family that has the strength to let Phoebe know that some of her shenanigans are dangerous to her husband's career and too influential on her daughter. Moses Storm (Sunnyside) will portray Michael, Phoebe's BFF, roommate and friend since freshman year of college. He is a video game livestreamer who is not ashamed to promote his TikTok whenever he can. Michael is more than happy not to grow up and will be the playful devil on Phoebe's shoulder.

Issac Brown (black-ish, Miles from Tomorrowland) and Navia Robinson (Being Mary Jane) have been cast as Raven's 11-year-old twins Booker and Nia, respectively, and Jason Maybaum (Superstore) will play Chelsea's nine-year-old son Levi. Sky Katz (America's Got Talent) also joins the cast as Nia's best friend Tess.
Geared toward kids 6-14 and their families, the series will pick up with Raven and Chelsea, who are now divorced single mothers raising their two separate families in one chaotic, but fun household full of friends. When one of Raven's kids begins to show signs that they have inherited her trait of catching glimpses of the future, the already hectic household gets turned upside down, keeping even Raven on her toes. As previously announced, Raven-Symoné will serve as an executive producer on the series. Longtime writer/producer partners Scott Thomas and Jed Elinoff (Disney Channel's Best Friends Whenever, Emmy nominees for R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour) will also executive produce.
Comedian Iliza Shlesinger is bringing her incisive perspective to a new weekly half-hour late-night talk show, Truth & Iliza. Truth & Iliza is getting a six-week run starting Tuesday, May 2 at 10pm EDT and will serve as a platform for Iliza's societal observations and sketches fueled by her opinions as well as in-studio celebrity guest and expert interviews. The show will be centered around a themed question which Iliza will seek to answer using audience interaction, field pieces, commentary and, of course, jokes. Iliza will draw from her decade of stand-up experience to focus on the sociopolitical issues of the day, providing a forum for viewers to discuss everything from the necessary to the inane to the taboo. Iliza recently wrapped up her national 15-city theatre tour - Iliza: The Confirmed Kills Tour. Girl Logic, her first book from Weinstein Books, will be published in the fall 2017. Iliza's scripted web series on the ABC app, Forever 31, has been ordered for a second season, and her third comedy special Confirmed Kills is currently available on Netflix.
