Remembering Comedian Louie Anderson; Central Park Returns March 4 on Apple TV+

Louie Anderson

Emmy-winning actor, game show host and stand-up comedian Louie Anderson, who starred as Christine Baskets on Baskets, has died. He died on January 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada, of complications from large B-cell lymphoma. Mr. Anderson was 68.

Life with Louie

Anderson created and produced the 1994-1998 Fox animated series Life with Louie. The first two episodes aired in primetime on December 18, 1994, before moving to Saturday mornings on Fox Kids in 1995. The series was based on Anderson's childhood with 10 siblings, a sweet-hearted mother and a loud, war-crazed father. He provided the voices of Little Louie and Andy Anderson, Louie's difficult, but caring father. He won two Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program in 1997 and 1998.

The Louie Show

He starred as Dr. Louie Lundgren on the short-lived 1996 CBS sitcom The Louie Show. Dr. Louie Lundgren is a psychotherapist dealing with his friends and family in Duluth, Minnesota. The series also starred Bryan Cranston, Kate Hodge, Paul Feig, Laura Innes, Nancy Becker Kennedy and Kimmy Robertson.

Family Feud - Louie Anderson

Anderson was the host of Family Feud from 1999 to 2002. He was a regular panelist on Funny You Should Ask from September 2018 until the show went on hiatus in 2020. He appeared on The New Hollywood Squares and Hollywood Squares. In 2013, he appeared on the ABC reality competition series Splash.

Baskets - Zach Galifianakis and Louie Anderson

He starred as Christine Baskets on the 2016-2019 FX comedy-drama Baskets. Christine Baskets is the mother of identical twin brothers Chip Baskets and Dale Everett Baskets (Zach Galifianakis). Anderson received three consecutive nominations for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and won once in 2016 for the role.

Anderson played Lou Appleton on the Perfect Strangers unaired pilot episode. When the show was picked up, he was replaced by Mark Linn-Baker in the role of Appleton (whose first name was then changed from Lou to Larry) as the producers didn't think the chemistry between Anderson and Bronson Pinchot was quite right.

Some of his sitcom guest appearances included Trying Times, Grace Under Fire, Love & War, Scrubs, Half & Half, Joey, Young Sheldon, Search Party (5 episodes as Bob) and Twenties (2 episodes). His drama guest appearnces included Remington Steele, Chicago Hope, Touched by an Angel, Ally McBeal, Nash Bridges and V.I.P. (2001).

Coming to America - Eddie Murphy and Louie Anderson

He starred as Maurice in the 1988 film Coming to America and the 2021 sequel Coming 2 America. Some of his other film credits included Quicksilver (1986), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), The Wrong Guys (1988), Mr. Wrong (1996), Cook Off! (2007) and Sandy Wexler (2017).

His survivors include his sisters Lisa and Shanna Anderson.

Mr. Anderson was a gifted comedian and performer. His late night talk show appearances were always very funny. We thank him for the many laughs and entertainment he brought us during his career. He will be sorely missed.

FX's Baskets to End After This Season; GSN's Catch 21 Returns with Dancing with the Stars Duo Reunion

Baskets

FX Networks announced that its critically acclaimed comedy series Baskets will come to an end with the show's season four finale on Thursday, August 22 on FX. Baskets is executive produced by Jonathan Krisel, Zach Galifianakis, Marc Gurvitz and Andrea Pett-Joseph, and stars Galifianakis, Louie Anderson, Martha Kelly and Alex Morris. It is produced by FX Productions. Season four of Baskets continues Thursdays at 10pm. In the three seasons that Baskets has been Emmy Award(R) eligible, Louie Anderson won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and was nominated two additional times for his work as loving matriarch "Christine Baskets." In 2017, Zach Galifianakis received an Emmy nomination for "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series" for his transformation into twin brothers "Chip Baskets" and "Dale Baskets."

Catch 21 - Witney Carson and Alfonso Ribeiro

Game Show Network, the leader in game shows and competitive entertainment, has announced Alfonso Ribeiro (America's Funniest Videos) has returned as host of its Catch 21 reboot. Witney Carson (Dancing with the Stars) joins as card dealer, reuniting the former dance partners in a game show first. The half-hour series is anticipated to premiere in Fall 2019. In Catch 21, dealing out larger-than-life playing cards, the host quizzes contestants with general-knowledge questions as they attempt to build the closest hand to 21. Part knowledge, part nerve, and part strategy, every correct answer is a chance to add a card and build a better hand or pass the card and "bust" the competition. In addition, every correct answer gives a player control of the deck and the option of "freezing" their hand to protect themselves from being "busted" later in the round. Putting a familiar twist on a classic game, players match wits and put victory on the line in every round with the turn of a card and the next correct answer.

Young & Hungry Returns for Final Season; FX Renews Baskets

Young & Hungry

Young & Hungry will kick off its final season with back-to-back episodes of the fan-favorite comedy on Wednesday, June 20, beginning at 8:00 p.m. EDT/PDT on Freeform. The final season sees Gabi and Josh happily together and in love, but now navigating their new status as a full-fledged couple. Meanwhile, the rest of Josh's staff, Yolanda and Elliot, are grappling with the change in work dynamic with Gabi as the "woman of the house." Sofia, Gabi's best friend, who begins to feel like a third wheel with the new couple, sets out on her own path to find love. The series stars Emily Osment, Jonathan Sadowski, Aimee Carrero, Kym Whitley and Rex Lee.

In the first episode, "Young & Downton Gabi," Gabi and Josh delight in their new status as an official couple, but Elliot and Yolanda are worried about how their work lives will change now that Gabi is the "lady of the house." Trying to make things less awkward, Gabi asks Josh to spend more time at her apartment, but Josh is horrified when he learns how messy Gabi is. In the second episode, "Young & Third Wheel," Josh decides to set Sofia up with someone, in hopes she'll be less of a third wheel in his and Gabi's relationship. But when Sofia hits it off with Josh's dentist, Gabi isn't so sure he's the right one for her friend. Meanwhile, Elliot turns to Yolanda for help in reigniting the spark between him and Alan. Fri-Yay: The Best Show You Aren't Watching; Baskets Returns Jan. 23 on FX

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

by Vincent

Of all of the shows on TV right now, the one I look forward to the most may be Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is one of (if not the?) funniest show on television, stringing together lines of dialogue capable of standing with classic Simpsons episodes or 30 Rock when it comes to all-time great comedy writing. Even if it were just a funny sitcom, it'd be one of the very best shows on TV. However, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has elevated itself not just as a funny sitcom but also as a genuinely deep and dark look into the reality of life with an untreated mental illness - and in its third season (the show's darkest yet), it's better and bolder than ever.

On the surface, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend could easily look like a careless series that makes fun of a mentally ill woman and makes her the butt of the joke. Its title, while meant to be ironic, can certainly give off that vibe. And when it premiered, many critics feared that was exactly what it was. But over the course of its flawless first season, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend proved that it takes its heroine Rebecca Bunch's problems very seriously. The show would often portray her at her lowest (most notably during the heart wrenching musical number "You Stupid Bitch", in which Rebecca tells herself "you ruined everything, you stupid bitch" over and over.) Over the course of the rest of the series, the show would portray Rebecca as trying to use various new goals and new personas to escape the reality of her mental illness and depression.

I won't spoil anything, but events transpired at the end of the second season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend that have made Season 3 the darkest season yet, dealing with Rebecca's issues head on. Yes, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a hilarious show - but honestly, I haven't been on the edge of my seat with dread and anticipation this much with a TV show since Breaking Bad. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is like a funnier, more musical version of Breaking Bad, and it's the best show you aren't watching.

Baskets

Yippie Kie Yay! The third season of Baskets, the acclaimed comedy series starring Zach Galifianakis, will return to FX on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 10 PM ET/PT. Nothing brings a family together like a family business - or at least that was the plan. Welcome to the Baskets Family Rodeo, where Christine is the President and CEO despite never having seen a rodeo before. Chip has his first full-time gig since Arby's, but can barely transfer a phone call, let alone recruit much-needed clowns. And even though Dale is the only one in the family who has run a business, he can't get anyone to listen to him - his family, the employees, or the horses.

Baskets was co-created by Executive Producers Jonathan Krisel (Emmy(R) Award-nominated writer and director, Portlandia, Saturday Night Live, Man Seeking Woman), Louis C.K. (Emmy Award-winner, Louie), and Zach Galifianakis (Emmy Award-winner, Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis; Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance); The Hangover and its sequels). M. Blair Breard, Dave Becky, Marc Gurvitz, Andrea Pett-Joseph, and Anna Dokoza are also Executive Producers. The series is produced by FX Productions.

The cast of Baskets features Zach Galifianakis as twins "Chip & Dale Baskets," Louie Anderson as "Christine Baskets" (Primetime Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, Baskets, and two-time Daytime Emmy winner for Outstanding Performer in an animated Program, Life with Louie and The Louie Show), and Martha Kelly as "Martha."

FX's Baskets Gets 3rd Season; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of March 13, 2017)

Baskets

The acclaimed and award-winning FX comedy Baskets starring Zach Galifianakis has been renewed for a third season. Baskets, co-created by Galifianakis, Louis C.K. and Jonathan Krisel, won the Emmy(R) Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Louie Anderson) and the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Louie Anderson) during its first season.

In season two, the Baskets family is at its most fragile. Losing his wife and his rodeo job, Chip (Zach Galifianakis) jumps on a train to get the hell out of Bakersfield, but a gang of gutter punks, the police, and a sudden death drag him right back into the drama he tried to escape. Dale's (Zach Galifianakis) marriage crumbles as his unrequited love affair with Martha (Martha Kelly) deepens, and Christine (Louie Anderson), who dedicated her life to her sons with little affection in return, takes her own happiness into consideration for once - and finds romance on the way. The cast of Baskets features Zach Galifianakis as twins "Chip" and "Dale Baskets," Louie Anderson as "Christine Baskets" (Primetime Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, Baskets, and two-time Daytime Emmy winner for Outstanding Performer in an animated Program, Life with Louie and The Louie Show), and Martha Kelly as "Martha."

Close out 2015 with B.A. Baracus and gang as The A-Team will have a 24-hour marathon beginning at 7pm ET on New Year's Eve running into New Year's Day 7pm to ring in the new year. All episodes are unedited! That's not all, the series will join the regular schedule starting Monday, January 4, 2016 airing weeknights at 8pm following Magnum P.I, as that series will now air just once a day. The A-Team ran for five seasons on NBC 1983-1986. The show was a hit with audiences from the very beginning, and it remains a fixture in popular culture to this day. Each action-packed episode centers around a rogue group of commandos who are on the run from the government, wanted for "crime they didn't commit." The series starred George Peppard, Dirk Benedict, Dwight Schultz and Mr. T, with other stars like Melinda Culea, Marla Heasley, Tia Carrere, Eddie Velez, and Robert Vaughn. Elsewhere on Encore Classic, leaving the schedule later this month are Murphy Brown and Night Court, which are currently airing in the 6pm ET hour on Encore Classic. Baskets

FX Networks has set the premiere dates for new and returning series on FX and FXX this winter, including the new comedy series Baskets starring Zach Galifianakis and the new limited series American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson. FXX will also welcome back It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the longest-running series in FX history, for Season 11, and Man Seeking Woman for Season 2. The Peabody Award-winning drama The Americans will return with its fourth season in March on FX. Baskets, a new comedy co-created by and starring Zach Galifianakis, debuts on FX on Thursday January 21 at 10 PM ET/PT. Chip Baskets (Galifianakis) wants to follow his dream of being a French clown - however, reality keeps interfering. Saddled with financial difficulties and facing an impenetrable language barrier, he moves back home to Bakersfield with high hopes. There, he is forced to confront his past while working as a rodeo clown and competing with his siblings for his mother's approval and affection.

American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, the latest limited series from FX, premieres on Tuesday, February 2 at 10 PM ET/PT. Based on the book The Run of His Life: The People V. O.J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin, the limited series is a look at the O.J. Simpson trial told from the perspective of the lawyers. It explores the chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and maneuvering on both sides of the court, and how a combination of prosecution overconfidence, defense shrewdness, and the LAPD's history with the city's African-American community gave a jury what it needed: reasonable doubt. The series stars John Travolta, Cuba Gooding Jr., Sarah Paulson, David Schwimmer, Courtney B. Vance, Sterling Brown, Nathan Lane, Kenneth Choi, Christian Clemenson and Bruce Greenwood.

The Americans will return in March with Season 4 (premiere date TBD) on FX. The Americans is one of the most critically acclaimed series on television and the winner of numerous awards, including Best Drama Series from the Critics' Choice Television Awards (2015), Outstanding Achievement in Drama from the Television Critics Association Awards (2015), a 2015 Primetime Emmy(R) Award (Margo Martindale, Guest Actress in a Drama Series), AFI Award for TV Program of the Year in 2014 and 2015, and a Peabody Award (2015). It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, the longest-running series in FX Networks' history, returns to FXX for Season 11 on Wednesday, January 6 at 10 PM ET/PT. Get ready for more misguided dreams leading to blundered schemes from everyone's favorite bar owners! The gang returns to Paddy's Pub with Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson) and Frank (Danny Devito). Last season, the gang crushed Wade Boggs' cross-country flight drinking record, killed Mac's dad, and started a cult. This season, the gang gets involved in even more insane adventures including a move to the suburbs, shooting a smut film, defending themselves in court, and playing another deranged round of the legendary board game Chardee MacDennis.

And finally, Man Seeking Woman returns for Season 2 on FXX on Wednesday, January 6 at 10:30 PM ET/PT, immediately following the Season 11 premiere of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The comedy's surreal new season about the life-and-death stakes of dating will follow "Josh Greenberg" (Jay Baruchel) as he soldiers through foolish texts, awkward dates, cloning disasters, man-on-car sex, hundreds of deaths, and worst of all, a season-long love triangle with his best friend. The series also stars Eric Andre (The Eric Andre Show) as "Mike," Josh's confident and daring best friend; and Britt Lower (Unforgettable) as "Liz," Josh's intimidating older sister. Man Seeking Woman is based on Simon Rich's book of short stories, The Last Girlfriend on Earth.
