Week 27 TV Ratings and Analysis; How the Sitcoms Did

Week 27 (March 25-31) Analysis: NBC is back on the map thanks to one show, The Voice. It came back strong and gave them a Monday win and made NBC competitive on Tuesday. We don't have the final first four night network averages, but we can project CBS has the lead in HH/total viewers, while NBC is probably on top in adults 18-49. CBS is probably very a close second place in 18-49, followed very closely by Fox and then ABC. In HH/viewers, ABC is probably second behind CBS, while NBC is a likely third. And Fox is probably a competitive fourth, even with Idol. When the week is done, CBS should come back and take the week in 18-49 again, thanks to NCAA. CBS will also take total viewers for sure. More on that later. As for the previous week, week 26, CBS edged Fox for first in adults 18-49 with 2.1 rating, compared to a 1.9 for Fox. ABC was right behind Fox with a 1.8. NBC was way back there once again in fourth with just a 1.2 18-49 rating. Among total viewers, it was of course CBS on top easily over second place ABC and third place Fox. And NBC was way back behind in fourth, like every week since January. Saving grace The Voice has arrived in week 27, though.

Monday saw NBC come back to life after hibernating in the winter. But first, ABC started with a two-hour Dancing with the Stars from 8-10pm and did 14.47 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, which is down eight tenths in 18-49 from previous week's season's debut. That was expected with the NBC competing reality premiering, the ABC series was up from week two in the fall, though. Then Castle was all-new at 10 and did a big 10.57 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, down just a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Episode #100 tomorrow night! For NBC, they had the two-hour The Voice season premiere from 8-10pm that did 13.64 million and a 4.8 18-49 rating, which is up from its fall launch on Sept. 10, 2012 and up 2.1 points in 18-49 from previous week's Loser finale. A strong start. At 10pm, the return of Revolution did 7.03 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, good for first thanks to the lead-in. It's solid but not a big hit. CBS was all-new with its comedies, as a new How I Met Your Mother did 6.99 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, which was down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. A new Rules of Engagement at 8:30pm did 6.3 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. I think that's low and could be better. At 9pm, a new 2 Broke Girls followed with 8.76 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 actually from previous week's series low. I thought it would have been down again. Next, a new Mike & Molly did 8.99 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, also up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week's series low. A new Hawaii Five-0 at 10pm did 8.61 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week. All three 10pm dramas did well for 10pm. Fox aired a news Bones at 8 and it did 6.96 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. At 9pm, week ten of new drama The Following at 9pm did 6.66 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, which is down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week for a series low. A little concerning, but solid even with all of this competition. The CW aired week eleven of The Carrie Diaries at 8 and did 0.83 million and a 0.4 18-49 rating, which is again on par in 18-49 with previous week. Should do better. At 9, 90210 was preempted for a Hart of Dixie repeat that did 0.42 million and a 0.1 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's repeat. A 0.1 is terrible, repeat or not.

On Tuesday, it was CBS with the edge over Voice-fueled NBC. On CBS, NCIS was new and did 18.62 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, which is on par in 18-49 with previous week. At 9pm, a new NCIS: Los Angeles (which was part two of a backdoor pilot for a potential spin-off) did 14.53 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from part one the previous week. At 10pm, week five of Golden Boy did 8.07 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week for a Tuesday low. On ABC, at 8pm the second week of Splash did 6.72 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, down nine tenths in 18-49 from previous week's premiere. Down a lot, but not bad against The Voice. If it can stay around a 1.6-2.2 the rest of the way, that's good numbers versus not only The Voice, but similar appeal Hell's Kitchen and drama NCIS. At 9pm, the season premiere of Dancing with the Stars: The Results did 13.43 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, up three tenths in 18-49 from previous week's recap special. And it also tied the ratings for previous night's performance show, so obviously Dancing was affected by The Voice. A new Body of Proof aired at 10pm and did 9.59 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, which was up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week for a new season high again and #1 at 10pm. Best episode of the season, too. NBC aired the Tuesday premiere of The Voice from 8-9pm and did 12.41 million and a 4.1 18-49 rating, easily #1 in the time period. At 9pm, Go On was new and it only did 5.12 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, yes up nine tenths in 18-49 from previous week's series low but still this is not a good performance at all, as NBC went from an easy #1 at 8 to #4 at 9. At 9:30pm, it was more bad news as a new The New Normal did a horrible 3.32 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, up six tenths in 18-49 from previous week but still fourth place. At 10pm, a new Smash did 3.05 million and an embarrassing 1.0 18-49 rating, yet up three tenths in 18-49 from previous week's series low. It is moving to Saturdays at 9 beginning next Saturday, April 6. Fox started with Hell's Kitchen at 8 and did 4.68 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week. At 9pm, New Girl was new and did 4.19 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Not a juggernaut at all, but one of the younger skewing shows on the big four. At 9:30pm, a new The Mindy Project did 2.62 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, as that skewed young too but down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. The CW preempted Hart of Dixie for a Here Comes Peter Cottontail special and did 1.16 million and a 0.4 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week's Timberlake special. A repeat of Beauty & the Beast at 9 did 0.64 million and a 0.2 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week.

Wednesday it was Fox with an easy win thanks to American Idol, as it airs two-hours every Wednesday and Fox only programs 2 hours a night. But first, CBS started the night off with a new Survivor: Caramoan at 8 doing 9.43million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, which is again down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Criminal Minds was a repeat at 9 and did 5.57 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, which is below normal. At 10pm, a repeat of CSI did 6.96 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, also below normal but built from its lead-in. ABC kicked off the night with a new The Middle doing 6.9 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, below normal but this was the first new airing in a month. At 8:30pm the season finale of The Neighbors did 5.52 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. I'd bring it back for next season, but for Fridays. At 9pm, the first new Modern Family in a month did the best of the block with 9.09 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, which was also below normal. It should be higher this week now that people know it's back. Even so, it was tied for the best of the night. Suburgatory followed at 9:30pm with a new episode doing 5.33 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, up four tenths in 18-49 from previous week's low. It'll move to 8:30pm for a few weeks beginning this Wednesday, as new series How To Live With Your Parents premieres this Wednesday at 9:30. Look for our review on Tuesday. At 10pm, Nashville was new and did 5.18 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating. On Fox, a two-hour American Idol did a solid 12.33 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, but down four tenths in 18-49 from previous week, as it slowly is going down every week. Onto NBC a new episode of Whitney started it off at 8pm with 2.92 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week. At 8:30pm, the season finale followed and did 2.88 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, it's just not cutting it and I am thinking it won't return next season. Law & Order: SVU followed at 9pm with a new episode that did 6.61 million and only a 1.7 18-49 rating, up just a tenth in 18-49 from previous week when it faced a new episode of the competing CBS drama. At 10pm, a new Chicago Fire did 6.85 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which is on par in 18-49 with previous week. Good enough to win #1 in the slot. The CW aired a new episode of new hit Arrow and did 2.65 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, below normal and down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. At 9pm, a new Supernatural did 2.23 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, skewing very young and younger than its lead-in and on par in 18-49 with previous week. Their most consistent show and it's a veteran.

On Thursday, Idol plummeted even more as ABC took the night. Starting with ABC, a new Wife Swap aired and did 4.23 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. At 9pm, Grey's Anatomy was all-new and did 9.02 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, down just a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Not bad on a night historically where shows drop (day before Good Friday) At 10pm, ABC aired a new showing of TV's #1 show at 10pm Scandal doing 7.97 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, also down just a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. #WhosIsTheMole? CBS preempted comedies The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men, along with dramas Person of Interest and Elementary round three coverage of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. CBS averaged 5.77 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating for the first game that began at 7pm between Miami Ohio/Marquette. The next game went to 12:04am and averaged 7.99 million and a solid 2.8 18-49 rating overall. Fox had American Idol from 8-9pm and did 11.43 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating, which was down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week and that wasn't #1 for the night again even without Big Bang. Glee was preempted for the 2-episode finale of Raising Hope, which didn't do hot. The first airing did just 4.16 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating and the second one followed with just 3.28 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, as fans didn't find the show on a special night/time. NBC aired a mix of new and repeat episodes of its comedies, as a repeat of Community did 2.24 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating. Parks & Recreation was preempted for a new episode of the dud 1600 Penn at a special time of 8:30pm and did 1.92 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week in 18-49. A repeat of The Office was next and did only 1.62 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, also down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. At 9:30m the finale (99.9% chance its a series finale) of 1600 Penn, at its normal time, did only 1.91 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week for another series low. Not good. At 10pm, NBC had a repeat of Law & Order: SVU doing 3.95 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, as that was down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week...but #1 for NBC for the night, ouch. The CW's big gun Vampire Diaries aired at 8 and was new and did 2.46 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. At 9, Beauty and the Beast was also new and did 1.50 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating, once again up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week.

Now, final numbers for Friday and Saturday are not available, but CBS was #1 in 18-49 with NCAA Basketball coverage. CBS preempted Undercover Boss and the rest of its line-up for more NCAA Basketball coverage and took the night. Kitchen Nightmares was a repeat for Fox but still was in third beating NBC's Fashion Star which was in fourth place. ABC launched Friday airings of Happy Endings, and battled for a distant second at 8pm. ABC was way back up at 9pm with a new Shark Tank easily beating a new Grimm on NBC. At 10, Rock Center was last place again for NBC, losing to 20/20 on ABC, as NCAA topped at 10 on CBS. Fox again struggled badly with Touch at 9, with a distant fourth place finish and a series low.
Saturday had CBS win with more NCAA Basketball coverage, with the airing of Wichita State/Ohio State. Fox did OK in the 8pm hour with Cops, but struggled at 9 again with a repeat of The Following. CBS preempted 48 Hours, for a repeat of Elementary at 10 which had a big lead-in. NBC settled for repeats two-hour of Dateline from 8-10pm, which struggled and SNL at 10. ABC aired a the annual airing of The Ten Commandments from 7-11:44pm and was #2 for the night.

Tonight ABC Sunday is half-new from 7-11pm. AFV is preempted for It's The Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown, then an enhanced repeat of Once Upon a Time, followed by a new Revenge and a new Red Widow, as Revenge should be good. I think it will be a third place finish for ABC, as it is half repeats. NBC devotes the night to The Voice repeats from 7-10pm, which could do OK then a new Celebrity Apprentice: All-Stars at 10. NBC will likely finish in fourth. CBS has 60 Minutes at 7, followed by a new Amazing Race, then a new The Good Wife & a repeat of The Mentalist from 9-11pm. I'm thinking a first finish for CBS in 18-49 thanks to NCAA overrun. Fox's animation block is in repeats from 7-10pm and still should be second place.

As for the week (week 27), CBS should come back and take the week in 18-49 over NBC because of NCAA showings. Fox will be a close third in 18-49 and ABC will be right behind. For total viewers, CBS will remain first. ABC should be second again, followed by NBC. And Fox in a more competitive fourth. As for the coming week (week 28), ABC has the premiere of How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life) at 9:30pm on Wednesday. It should be sampled well. Suburgatory moves to 8:30pm for its final three weeks of the season. Fox has special airings of New Girl and Mindy Project on Thursday and Fox hopes they do better than Raising Hope, I'm sure. NBC launches new drama Hannibal at 10 on Thursday, but will have a special airing of Go On as a lead-in, so that can't be good.

Last Sunday Sitcoms (counts for Week 26 -- March 18-24)

The Simpsons (Fox) - A repeat episode at 8 did 3.69 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating.
The Cleveland Show (Fox) - Its normal time of 7:30pm was a repeat and did 2.83 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, which is close to what it did previous week when it was new.
Bob's Burgers (Fox) - The 8:30 airing was all-new and did 3.76 million and 1.7 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from its lead-in, which was a repeat. A repeat at 7pm did 2.81 million and just a 0.9 18-49 rating, but up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week.
Family Guy (Fox) - A new episode at 9 did 5.16 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week and the best of the block and #1 for the night (excluding NCAA overrun).
American Dad! (Fox) - The series returned with a new episode at 9:30pm doing 4.53 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, which is very solid and surprisingly held a lot of its lead-in.

Monday Sitcoms

How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - A new episode at 8 did 6.99 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Not too bad given the competition.
Rules of Engagement (CBS) - Week eight at 8:30pm did 6.3 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from the previous week. Could this be the last season?
2 Broke Girls (CBS) - A new episode at 9 did 8.76 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week's series low. A little sigh of relief, for now.
Mike & Molly (CBS) - A new showing at 9:30pm did 8.99 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, also up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week's low.

Tuesday Sitcoms

Raising Hope (Fox) - preempted.
New Girl (Fox) - A new episode did 4.19 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. It's not doing as well as season one, for sure.
Go On (NBC) - A new episode of this series did 5.12 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, up nine tenths in 18-49 from previous week's series low, thanks to The Voice lead-in. However, this is the worst it has ever done with that lead-in.
The Mindy Project (Fox) - A new episode did 2.62 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, which is down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Not too good.
The New Normal (NBC) - A new airing at 9:30pm was clobbered with just 3.32 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, yes up six tenths in 18-49 from previous week's series low. But on a night where The Voice leads-off, this is terrible.

Wednesday Sitcoms

The Middle (ABC) - A new airing at 8 did 6.9 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, which is of course below normal. Usually when that happens it bounces back strong the following week.
Whitney (NBC) 2 airings - A new episode at 8 did 2.92 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, which tied a series low. At 8:30pm, the season finale followed with only 2.88 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, not a good way to end the season or series.
The Neighbors (ABC) - The season finale of this new comedy did 5.52 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. It proved it didn't have a much of disparity when its lead-in was a repeat. It could thrive on Fridays, I think.
Modern Family (ABC) - A new episode at 9 did 9.09 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, which is below normal. Yet still tied Idol for #1 for the night. I think it will go up this week with a new series premiering following it.
Suburgatory (ABC) - A new episode at 9:30pm did 5.33 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, which is up four tenths in 18-49 from previous week. It moves to 8:30pm this week, its former home from last season.

Thursday Sitcoms

The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - preempted.
Two and a Half Men (CBS) - preempted.
Community (NBC) - A repeat did 2.24 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, can't say much more since this show doesn't have the repeat value.
Parks & Recreation (NBC) - preempted.
The Office (NBC) - A repeat at 9 did just 1.62 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating. Ouch.
Raising Hope (Fox) 2 airings - A two-episode finale on a special night didn't do much. Even with a big lead-in, it did 4.16 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating at 9 then just 3.28 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating for the finale. Not good, but it's returning anyway.
1600 Penn (NBC) 2 airings - The finale at 9:30pm did only 1.91 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, for a series low. Another new episode aired earlier in the night at 8:30pm and did only 1.92 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating. You'll never see this show return ever again. No chance in hell.

Friday Sitcoms

Happy Endings (ABC) 2 airings - The return this new comedy did a prelim 3.10 million and a prelim 0.9 18-49 rating at 8. It was preempted in two top markets, so look for the rating to up up in the finals, as those two markets did a 0.0 and 0.5 in 18-49, respectively for the 8-9pm hour. Same goes for the second airing, which did a prelim 2.38 million and a prelim 0.7 18-49 rating. Not good news, but ABC didn't expect this show to perform the ratings of Last Man/Malibu.

Saturday Sitcoms

None.

Airing tonight (Sunday) are repeat episodes of Fox Animation Domination comedies from 7-10pm.

Summing it up. Modern Family, 2 Broke Girls, How I Met Your Mother, Mike & Molly, were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as The Middle, New Girl) or just plain terrible (such as Whitney, Raising Hope, 1600 Penn).
