SitcomsOnline Digest: CMT Brings Nashville Back to Life; Shout! to Release Sixth Season of Newhart

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! It's another slow summer news week, but we're here (as always!) with highlights from the ATX Television Fest and more. Let's get going!

  • Nashville didn't make it to the 2016-2017 ABC lineup, but that is OK because now CMT has picked it up, and will air a full 22 episode fifth season. (Entertainment Weekly)
  • Remember that spinoff of Everybody Loves Raymond that starred Brad Garrett? Well, it never happened, but it could have happened. (Variety)
  • The movie Mallrats has been waiting for years for a sequel, and it turns out one is coming, but instead of a movie, it will reportedly be a 10 episode TV series. (Gizmodo)
  • Netflix rarely gives any insight on ratings or viewing patterns of their content (there really is no reason for them to do so), but they are discussing the types of series views binge on. (Deadline)
  • The cable network Logo continues to evolve into a place for classic sitcoms, as the network is now airing What's Happening!! (SitcomsOnline)

  • Shout! Factory is moving ahead with Newhart, with a release of Newhart - The Complete Sixth Season set for release on September 13. This leaves only the final two seasons to be released.


  • Maude - The Complete Fifth Season (DVD, $26.99): Shout! Factory gets closer to finishing season sets of this series on DVD with this release of the next-to-last season.

Claim to Fame: When people think of Connie Britton these days, they don't exactly think sitcom star. But that is very wrong, because that was where she got her start, in the first four seasons of Spin City (she left when the series was retooled after Michael J. Fox's exit). Of course, the reason she isn't thought of as much for that role is because she went on to even bigger roles after that, but not in the sitcom realm. Between 2006 and 2011, she starred in Friday Night Lights (which had a cast reunion this week at the ATX Television Festival), and since 2012, she has starred in the series Nashville (which also made news this week as it is being moved to CMT). In fact, in between those series, she also starred in the twelve episodes of American Horror Story: Murder House, which was the first in that series.

Bob's Burgers - "Teen-a-Witch" (Fox, 7:30PM ET/PT)
With Halloween quickly approaching, Tina reveals her brilliant idea that will finally win her first place in the annual costume contest. When Tammy steals her idea, Tina is forced to seek the help of Mr. Ambrose, who leads her to alternate and other-worldly methods of winning. Meanwhile, Bob is on a mission to figure out who is stealing his perfectly crafted pumpkins.

The Simpsons - "Trust But Clarify" (Fox, 8:00PM ET/PT)
Lisa and Bart investigate Krusty’s suspicious new “Krustaceans” candy. Meanwhile, Homer wants a promotion at the nuclear plant and asks Marge to help him dress the part, and news anchor Kent Brockman struggles to find his feet in the changing media world.

Son of Zorn - "A Taste of Zephyria" (Fox, 8:30PM ET/PT)
After learning how Zephyria is depicted in the media, Zorn attempts to teach Alan about his culture. Meanwhile, Edie wages war with her new neighbors over their talking garden gnome.

Family Guy - "Inside Family Guy" (Fox, 9:00PM ET/PT)
FAMILY GUY takes viewers behind the scenes of a regular “FAMILY GUY” production week, with James Woods as the guide. See the ins-and-outs of what goes into the making of a “FAMILY GUY” episode and watch the drama unfold as Peter is replaced and ends up in the office of Fox Television Group Chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman to pitch his very own new series.

The Last Man on Earth - "Five Hoda Kotbs" (Fox, 9:30PM ET/PT)
A post-apocalyptic road trip has everyone at war with each other and Gail is really pushed to her breaking point.

Bizaardvark - "Spoiler Alert: Belissa Returns" (Disney Channel, 8:30PM ET/PT)
When Paige and Frankie hit a writing slump and other bad things start happening to them, Paige begins to think they are cursed; Amelia and Dirk are at odds when the lifestyle Diva declutters the Dare Lair.
