SitcomsOnline Digest: Eddie Murphy to Appear in SNL 40th Anniversary Special; Pilot Orders from Problem Child and Chevy Chase Sitcom

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! There is a big game tomorrow, but today we've got your regular day of news, including news of Eddie Murphy returning for the Saturday Night Live 40th anniversary special and some pilot updates. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • The last time that Eddie Murphy appeared on Saturday Night Live, most of the current cast members were either not yet born or under the age of five. Now, after 30 years of not being involved with the show in any way, shape, or form, it seems that he will make a return just for the 40th anniversary special of the series. (Deadline)
  • The 1990 movie Problem Child has come one step closer to turning from movie to TV series, as NBC has ordered a pilot for a series based upon the movie. (Deadline)
  • ABC has a pilot order for a sitcom that would reunite National Lampoon's Vacation stars Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo. (Entertainment Weekly)
  • If you're a Dish Network subscriber who loves the commercials during the big game but just don't care about football, then you'll love Reverse AutoHop, which will cut out the football to let you see just the commercials. (Consumerist)
  • We were wondering how long it would take Miami Vice to appear on one of the digital multicast networks, and now we know it will happen in March, on COZI TV. (SitcomsOnline)

Claim to Fame: Linda Evans first appeared on TV in 1960 as a guest star in an episode of Bachelor Father, which starred John Forsythe... the man she would be "married" to on TV for her most memorable role of Krystle Carrington about two decades later on the TV series Dynasty. She didn't stop working in between, though, as she appeared as a regular on The Big Valley in the late 60s and starred in the short lived 70s series Hunter (not the Fred Dryer one). She doesn't do a lot of acting these days, but she does appear in cast reunions and has done some infomercials in recent years. She seems to enjoy international travel quite a bit, and has a dog named Alexie (wonder where that name came from!) who means a lot to her. Additionally, in 2009 she appeared in the UK version of Hell's Kitchen, and even managed to win.

Miami Vice Coming to COZI TV in March; HBO Orders Second Season of Togetherness

Miami Vice

Miami Vice, the groundbreaking '80s NBC crime drama series starring Don Johnson as James "Sonny" Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, makes its debut on COZI TV on Sunday, March 1. Following a day-long Miami Vice marathon that Sunday from 1pm-5pm ET, the show will air regularly on COZI TV Monday-Friday at 11pm ET and Saturdays at 8pm and 9pm ET. The series originally ran for five seasons on NBC from 1984–1989. COZI TV currently is airing Dragnet in the 11pm hour. We will let you know soon what other changes COZI TV will make as a result of the addition of Miami Vice.

Miami Vice was set in its namesake city of Miami and dealt with hardcore themes such as drug peddling and prostitution. Many well-known bands and artists of the time contributed their music and its exposure on the show was known to increase record sales. Meanwhile, the clothes worn on Miami Vice also had a significant influence on men’s fashion at the time. Don Johnson’s typical attire of European sport coat, T-shirt, white linen pants and sockless loafers became wildly popular. Even Crockett's perpetually unshaven appearance inspired a men's fashion trend, making the sporting of a small amount of beard stubble de rigueur. In an average episode, Crockett and Tubbs wore five to eight outfits, appearing in the pastel shades associated with the Art Deco style found throughout Miami.

Togetherness

HBO has picked up a second season of its new comedy Togetherness after just three airings. The series is currently in the middle of its premiere season airing Sundays at 9:30pm. The half-hour comedy is set to begin production on its second season this year in Los Angeles for debut in 2016. Togetherness follows two couples living under one roof on the fringes of Los Angeles. Brett and Michelle are struggling to rekindle the spark in their relationship, which has puttered out from the stresses of marriage and children. When Brett's friend Alex and Michelle's sister, Tina, move in with them, the foursome engage in a tragically comedic struggle to follow their personal dreams, while still remaining good friends, siblings and spouses to each other. The comedy stars Mark Duplass as Brett Pierson, Melanie Lynskey as Michelle Pierson and Amanda Peet as Tina Morris.

Pop Announces 4 New Projects, Includes Christine Lakin's Worst Ever; 21st Annual SAG Awards Winners

Pop

Pop, previously known as TVGN, officially rebranded on Jan. 14, 2015, and announced four new projects in development that embrace the network's brand promise of celebrating the fun of being a fan. The projects include a comedic, candid interview series with celebrities recounting how they lost their virginity, from executive producers Morgan Spurlock and John Stamos; a docu-series starring top syndicated and Z100 radio host Elvis Duran; a reality series pairing celebrities and inventors to create and launch a product line; and a stage comedy series with talent recounting their worst or most embarrassing life moments. Let's go overall four. First up is Losing It from Morgan Spurlock and John Stamos. Based on the popular Yahoo! web series, this celebrity-hosted television series will capture sit-down interviews with stars as they recount their unforgettable and often hilarious real-life stories of losing their virginity. Bits are recreated by puppets, animation, live action and claymation leading up to and following the big event.

Next is an Elvis Duran Project. Elvis Duran, one of the most listened-to syndicated radio personalities in the U.S. and host of his own show on Z100 in New York (Elvis Duran and the Morning Show), is the subject of a docu-series that follows Elvis and his employees both at work and play. The series will feature superstar guests and platinum selling artists who stop by the radio show, road trips with fans, and best moments from fan-fueled music festivals and live events. The third project is Celebrity Inc. It pairs celebrities with their dream product and an aspiring inventor to showcase the ultimate product launch and illustrate the power of celebrity endorsement. In each episode, a different celebrity is featured while teaming up with top product development company Edison Nation, LLC to identify the most talented aspiring inventors. After spending a week in product development camp, the inventors pitch their product to the celebrity, and one person is chosen to have their product launched, with the celebrity's name attached, in stores nationwide and online. And finally, our pick of the four is Worst Ever. A handful of celebrities take the stage in Worst Ever to recount their hilarious, embarrassing and sometimes shocking "Worst Ever" scenarios such as a date, audition, break-up, fight, family dinner, sexual encounter or interview. Hosted by actress Christine Lakin (Step by Step), and based on her and Alec Ledd's live stage show in Los Angeles, the series is a wry, candid and honest look at how celebrities aren't immune to life's most awkward moments.

Which of these will make it to series? We'll let you know. Maybe one or two or all four? We're rooting for our friend Christine Lakin and Worst Ever! Stay tuned!
